Subject: Beta1-receptor directed autoimmunity.

Recent evidence indicates that autoantibodies directed against cell surface molecules criti-cally involved in the regulation of cardiac function (i.e., the beta1-adrenergic receptor) may play a pivotal role in the development and course of dilated cardiomyopathy [1, 2]. Such antibodies are thought to act as allosteric regulators of receptor activity, most likely by stabilizing a chronic active "harmful" receptor conformation. In Lewis rats, monthly immunization with the 2nd extracellular loop of the beta1- receptor (ß1-ECII; 100% sequence-identity human/rat) results in both, the generation of activating receptor-antibodies and progressive dilated cardiomyopathy.

Application of a novel ß1-ECII-homologous cyclopeptide (ß1-ECII-CP) designed to neutralize functional anti-ß1-ECII antibodies prevents the development of cardiomyopathy. In overt disease, ß1-ECII-CP even fully reversed the cardiomyopathic phenotype. In these previous studies ß1-ECII- CP induced a rapid decrease and finally nearly complete cessation of anti- ß1-ECII-production despite continued monthly boosts with the receptor- antigen. Thus, besides its scavenger function the ß1-ECII-CP seems to have further immunomodulatory features.

The proposed project deals with the characterization of the immunologic properties of the cyclopeptide both in vitro and in vivo. Scheduled experiments comprise the analysis and characterization of T and B cells involved in the induction of tolerance , including T-cell transfer experiments and the generation of monoclonal rat anti-ß1-ECII- antibodies. The aim is to further elucidate the immunological processes involved in induction and reversal of cardiac auto-immune damage, both in rats and in patients. The work will be carried out under the auspices of the
experienced staff of the department of immunology (Institut für Virologie und Immunbiologie) and the Rudolf-Virchow- Centre (DFG-Research Centre for Exp. Biomed.).

*STOCKHOLM UNIVERSITY CLIMATE RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT (SUCLIM)*

*TWO-YEAR POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN DISTRIBUTED MODELLING OF HYDROLOGICAL AND
BIOGEOCHEMICAL FLUX DYNAMICS IN COLD REGIONS at the Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology, Stockholm University
(ref.no. 618-1272-07) *

*The Stockholm University Climate Research program (SUCLIM)* is an externally funded 10-year research program bringing together the climate research expertise in four departments. We are building a strong and coherent research environment focusing on five cross-disciplinary core themes; climate variability, atmospheric and ocean circulation, boundary conditions for circulation system modelling, hydrological and biogeochemical cycles, and small-scale processes with large-scale impacts.

We are now recruiting a postdoctoral scientist to work within the SUCLIM environment on distributed modelling of coupled hydrological, carbon and other climate-relevant biogeochemical flux dynamics in cold regions. Research will explore the mechanisms of hydrological- biogeochemical cycling change under a changing climate, in terms of both the hydrological flow and physical mass transport processes through the coupled groundwater and stream network systems of whole catchments/drainage basins, and the biogeochemical processes and resulting coupled transport-reaction processes and fluxes along the hydrological transport pathways through these systems, towards
catchment outlets and coastal waters. The work will be carried out in collaboration with hydrologists, hydrogeologists and solute transport-reaction modellers from the Dept. of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology, geochemists from the Dept. of Geology and Geochemistry, biogeochemists from the Dept. of Applied Environmental Science, and meteorologists and climate modellers from the Dept. of Meteorology.

Applicants must have a PhD in Earth system science, hydrology, quantitative biogeochemistry, or related field, with significant experience in computer modelling. Previous experience in spatially explicit coupled hydrological- biogeochemical modelling is preferred. Candidates should also be strong in GIS, remote sensing, database management, and computer programming languages, with an interest in exploring the hydrological- biogeochemical properties of the coupled groundwater- stream network systems of drainage basins that are affected by snow/ice, glaciers or permafrost. PhD Studentship: EPSRC Molecular Nose Project @ DCS, University of Glasgow

PhD Studentship: EPSRC Molecular Nose Project

Modelling and analysis of sensed behaviours in biochemical networks

Supervisor: Professor Muffy Calder

The Molecular Nose is an exciting, large interdisciplinary research project involving biochemistry, cell biology, engineering, chemistry, and computing science. The goal of the project is to build a multiplexed sensor platform that can assess and quantify dynamic changes in the functional state of biochemical networks in mammalian cells, and use these data to reconstruct cell network interactions and their dynamic behaviour on a systems wide level. The concept underpinning this platform is fundamentally different from existing methods used in the biological sciences to assess cell function, and similar to the Electronic Nose, where an array of sensors is trained with individual stimuli to establish a library of response patterns which subsequently are used to deconvolute complex inputs. In this project, Professors Calder and Girolami (Computing Science) will establish a computational framework of modules for the interpretation of input-output relationships and prediction of functional network behaviours in response to perturbations. The aim of this studentship is to analyse and predict how modules interact with each other. The
starting point will be Calders previous work on the interaction of features in telecommunications networks, and also process algebraic models of biochemical networks.

The studentship is for four years.

The studentship is suitable for candidates with a good first degree (or Masters) in Computing Science or Mathematics, a willingness to engage with biochemistry and engineering and to work as part of a interdisciplinary team.

The closing date is 30 June 2007.

The application procedure can be found at

Stochastic process algebra modelling of ROS regulation in oxidative stress

Supervisor: Professor Muffy Calder

Recently, Professors Calder, in collaboration with Professor Hillston and Dr Gilmore (Edinburgh University) have developed a new approach to intracellular signalling modelling based on the idea that signalling pathways have stochastic, computational content; behaviour is modelled by stochastic process algebras (SPAs), which denote continuous time Markov chains. The SPA approach is novel, modelling species rather than molecules, and affords new quantitative analysis using logics or throughput, in addition to traditional differential equation (DE) simulations and stochastic simulation.

The aim of this studentship, in collaboration with Professor Dominiczak, Cardiovascular Medicine, is to develop the stochastic process algebra (SPA) approach for validated, predictive models of the regulation of ROS (reactive oxygen species) in oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a major factor in cardiovascular diseases and endothelial dysfunction in particular. The main problem is an imbalance between ROS (reactive oxygen species) and nitric oxide, the relationships between the components are complex, involving switching and feedbacks. The student will extend the SPA approach to model spatial aspects and abstractions over pathway components, and build comprehensive models of oxidative stress, reflecting the subtle

Project: Agrarismus in Ostmitteleuropa 1880 - 1950 (in German)

Europa Universität Viadrina, Forschungsstelle für Wirtschafts- und
Sozialgeschichte Ostmitteleuropas, Frankfurt (Oder)

Call for Application, FASID FIELDWORK PROGRAM

FASID Fieldwork Program
Interdisciplinary training for graduate students and young professionals in community development

Pinrang Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia
July 25 - August 12, 2007

<>
Fieldwork is an endeavor to travel an unknown path. To reach the final destination,
the fieldworker collects many pieces of information and investigates what they mean.
The compass is the fieldworker' s sensibility and reason. There is no shortcut or fast track.

Another aspect of fieldwork is to immerse oneself in relationships with others. People in front
of you are not simple objectives of research. The longer you stay in a location,
the closer you become to them. "How do I relate to my host family, their neighbors,
village officials or extension workers?" "How do I live in these relationships?
" Fieldwork gives us many chances to think about these fundamental questions.

Join our Program! We guarantee that your experiences in the Program will become a firm foundation on
which to build your future.

<>
By the end of this 19-day program, participants will be better prepared for independent fieldwork
by learning the basic principles of fieldwork on social development issues;
strengthening their capacity to grasp a holistic picture of the community where fieldwork is conducted;
and building skills to work in a multi-disciplinary and culturally diverse team.

The program aims to increase young people's interest in democracy and society, inspire their enthusiasm for democratic life and encourage them to participate in it. Estonia, France, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine and the USA. Participants from Kosovo/UNMIK can apply via the German Liaison Office in Pristina.

The IPS program begins on March 1 and lasts for five months in total. The core of the program is a three-and-a- half-month internship in the office of a Member of the
Bundestag. Additionally, the scholarship- holders attend preparatory seminars organized by the five political foundations. They also take part in a supplementary academic program organized by Berlin's three universities and the political foundations.

IPS participants receive a monthly grant of 450 euros from the German Bundestag. In addition, the scholarship includes free accommodation, and also covers the cost of
health, accident and public liability insurance. The cost of the participants' journeys to and from Berlin will be reimbursed.

CfA: Two-day conference on contemporary and cultural history of Eastern Europe

On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen will organize a ceremonial act on June 14th 2007 and a two-day conference on June 15th and 16th 2007. Since its foundation in 1982, the Research Centre deals with questions of contemporary and cultural history of Eastern Europe.

The conference "The Other Eastern Europe from the 1960s to the 1980s. Dissent in Politics and Society, Cultural Alternatives" aims at bringing together different perspectives on the contemporary history of Eastern Europe, from Stalin's death in 1953 to the "velvet" revolutions in 1989. In particular the interrelations between political, societal, and cultural developments shall be considered. Furthermore, one should move beyond the totalitarianism and the modernisation debates. Emphasis is therefore placed on questions of cultural profiles, spaces of action in the various societies and the functioning of political systems. Rather than isolating themes from
each other, different methodological approaches shall be combined.

For the conference programme, an application form and for further information please contact us under info-osteuropa@ uni-bremen. de or visit our website www.forschungsstell e-osteuropa. de
