CFP: Design Cinema 2008 Conference in ‘Design-en-scène’

DESIGN CINEMA 2008
‘Design-en-scè ne’

3rd International Design and Cinema Conference
19-22 November, 2008
Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Architecture

Call for Papers - Deadline for abstract submissions: 30 March 2008

The moving image has become a powerful medium for the representation of designed worlds and revolutionized the abstraction of that which is designed. While designers have become more open to the interests of cinema, cinema is expansively engaged with issues of design. This third meeting of the series Design and Cinema is organized with the intention of bringing together scholars and practitioners for theorizing and
rhetorizing the interpretation and production of those environments assumed to exist as real, hyper-real and/or virtual, embracing all hybrid forms. We believe that this theme will uncover those other far-reaching issues related to the realized and potential mise-en-scène designed. The real covers issues of designing of objects and environments, and the experience of the designed, as in the staging of the setting including both the actors and the scenery. Since what we understand from the hyper-real is an illusion whose effects are more real than the reality itself, the socio-political character of this phenomenon is expected to unravel itself in discussions dealing with the forces involved in the manipulation of reality and the blurring of the real for those who experience it in their daily lives. The virtual understood as a parallel universe, the technology and know-how employed in its implementation, and
all hybrid forms of existing parallel in the world of the real and the virtual are expected to be the focus of discussions here. Ideas, speculative propositions, media, practices, products, that fall under the issues presented here are welcome. Buildings, environments, products, film, television, computers, costume, games, sound, all are expected to act as agents of discussion.

Key issues include, but are not limited to the following areas of interest:

2D, 3D, 4D, Animation, Advertisement, Artificial Intelligence, Artwork-based entertainment, Audiovisual media, Atmosphere creating, Character design, Cinematic design, Comedy, Comics, Commercials, Computer games, Computer generated, Costume, Digital media, Digital Sculpture, Disneyification, Entertainment industry, Fiction, Film Analysis, Game industry, Game Culture, Gender, Sexuality and Popular Culture, Graphic Storytelling, Holography, Home theatre, Horror, Interactive game tools,
Interactive installations, Interactive media, Make-up, Matte painting, Media Convergence, Motion Capture, Multi-dimensional environments, Narrative media, New media, Parallel universes, Personal immersive environment, Physical Spaces, Portable multi-media, Post-production, Props, Robotics, Science Fiction, Screening, Sets, Simulacra and simulation, Special effects, Society of the spectacle, Sound, Stage
design, Storytelling, Supernatural Theatre buildings, Theories of Media, TV broadcasts, TV characters, World making, Virtual spaces

We seek to bring to the front through this conference one of the ongoing discussions: representation and realization of the designed setting with reference to theory, tools, and practices.

Important dates:
30 March 2008 Submission of abstracts (750 words)
30 April 2008 Notification of accepted abstracts
30 June 2008 Submission of full papers
30 July 2008 Notification of accepted papers
30 October 2008 Deadline for registration
19-22 October 2008 Conference

Submitted abstracts and papers will be reviewed by an international scientific committee. Keynote speakers will be announced following their confirmation, although positive contacts have been established.

Electronic submission of papers is required in .pdf and .doc format. Abstracts of 750 words, with brief resume should be submitted to submission@designci nema2008. org. All the necessary details will be announced at the conference website. Abstracts will be published as a hard copy, and the full papers in CD format.

IAPSS Academic Conference-Cluj-Napoca, Romania [DL: 15 Dec]

Dear Colleagues,

We are proud to announce the IAPSS Annual Academic Conference

“Sovereignty in a globalizing world”

Place: Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Period: 11th-16th of January 2008
Participants: 50

It is common wisdom that all international bodies of governmental or non-governmental nature discuss nowadays about globalising international relations and creating a global network in which the actors (states) have rights and duties.

We want to discover, with the valuable help of the speakers and of the participants, if globalisation and sovereignty can go hand in hand, if they need some transformation, or if one of them can or should leave the scene and make room for a more innovative approach.

The conference will be structured as follows:

1. A first part – lead by international and national academic speakers and people who held or are in the present in charge of institutions, governmental bodies that involve dealing with international and foreign affairs.
The speakers will elaborate on the concepts of sovereignty and globalisation amd other related concepts involved by the theme of the conference.

A second part – dedicated to panels, debates and roundtables focused on different thematic areas related to the main theme. During these meetings, participants will have the opportunity to present their papers referring to the topic of the conference.

The deadline for applications is 15th of December 2007.
The results will be made public by the 17th of December 2007.

Travel suggestions: We can say right away that it is more suitable to take the low cost airplane tickets to Budapest and from there you have minibuses directly to Cluj-Napoca. And now you have direct flight to Cluj-Napoca by Wizzair.

You can participate at the conference in 2 different positions: either as a simple participant by attending the activities or you have the possibility to present your own paper during the conference, written on one of the topics mentioned in the programme you can find on the webpage.

Fee for participants: 70 Euro

Fee for participants who submit papers: 50 euro

The participation fee includes: accommodation, food, trip to Sibiu- the European capital 2007, conference materials, and a lot of fun.

CfA: PhD Studentship, Conflict in cities and the contested state

Six PhD Studentships
Six doctoral studentships, starting September 2008, are on offer as part of an ESRC Large Grant: Conflict in cities and the contested state: Everyday life and the possibilities for transformation in Belfast, Jerusalem and Other Divided Cities. Overseas, EU and UK students, with or without a Masters degree, are all eligible to apply.

The project focuses on divided cities as key sites in territorial conflicts over state and national identities. It analyses how everyday life in divided cities in Europe and the Middle East have been shaped by such conflicts; and conversely, how the cities can potentially transform these conflicts. The empirical focus of the studentships will not be on Belfast or Jerusalem but on other similarly divided cities, such as Brussels, Mostar, Nicosia, Beirut or Kirkuk.

The Conflict in Cities Graduate Programme is based in the three project universities, with two studentships in each: Cambridge (Architecture, Urbanism) directed by Dr. Wendy Pullan, Exeter (Politics and International Relations) directed by Prof. Mick Dumper, and Queen's Belfast (Sociology) directed by Prof. Liam O'Dowd. Applicants from related disciplines, such as Human Geography and Urban Studies, will be considered.

Students will have the benefits of being part of a large, multi-disciplinary project. Their programme includes Graduate Workshops, visits to Belfast and Jerusalem, meetings with local experts and assistance from project partners in the relevant cities. Students can also attend annual Project Workshops and an International Conference in September 2011.

Deadline for Applications: 15 January 2008. For further details, see the project website: www.conflictincitie s.org Enquiries to: Professor Michael Dumper c/o mary.d.carter@ exeter.ac. uk CONFLICT IN CITIES AND THE CONTESTED STATE

Diskurszeit - Wendejahre in/für Südost- und Mittelosteuropa

kakanien revisited, Wien
Deadline: 10.01.2008

CfP: 3rd Changing Europe Summer School, Bremen, 28.7-2.8.2008

Call for applications
3rd Changing Europe Summer School

"Central and Eastern Europe in a Globalised World"
Bremen, 28 July - 2 August 2008

organised by the Research Centre for East European Studies at the University of Bremen in cooperation with the EU Institute for Security Studies, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation

The topic:

The changes in post-socialist Central and Eastern European countries have been affected by outside influences more than any preceding wave of democratisation in this ever-shrinking world. Most Central European states quickly and successfully set course for EU and NATO membership, which had major implications for the transformation of their polities, societies and economies. States and societies on the territory of the former Soviet Union and in the Balkans had much bumpier trajectories, resulting in a broad spectrum of hybrid political regimes with varying degrees of global integration.

As globalisation is a two-way street, the Changing Europe Summer School 2008 will focus on two sets of issues: The first evolves around the influence of external impulses on the transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe in the era of ongoing globalization. The second addresses the ways in which political systems, societies and economies have reacted (and continue to react) to these external forces and how they integrate themselves into the global environment.

The Summer School:

Each year the Changing Europe Summer School brings together about 30 young academics (i.e. mainly doctoral students from disciplines like political science, economics, sociology, social anthropology, law and geography) working on issues related to countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Participation in the Summer School gives them a chance to present and discuss their research projects and to become better integrated into the academic community.

The core of the Summer School consists of the presentation of doctoral research projects and their discussion with senior researchers of international repute in their respective fields. International Admission & Financial Aid at Bates College

Why Bates?

Rated among the best liberal arts colleges in the nation, Bates' curriculum and faculty challenge students to develop powers of critical assessment, analysis, expression, aesthetic sensibility, and independent thought. Our 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio puts students in direct contact with Bates' extraordinary faculty. In fact, you can start right off in a First-Year Seminar, with just 14 other students and a professor.

Bates has a long tradition of educating students from abroad as well as those from the United States. Currently we have enrolled students from more than 70 different countries ranging from Azerbaijan to Zimbabwe. With so many cultures present on campus, the International Community is both diverse and active.

International students also benefit from an international orientation session, a specific adviser in the Dean of Students Office, and campus housing that is available during the summer and holliday periods.

Our most important offering, however, is nationally recognized strength of our academics. Bates is consistently ranked as one of the top liberal arts colleges in America, with world-class facilities in all areas of the sciences, and an outstanding reputation for departments such as Economics, Political Science, and Biology. You can find our course catalogue online at http://www.bates. edu/catalog/ .

Making College Costs Affordable: Need-Based Financial Aid

The College expets students and their families to contribute as much as possible toward the Comprehensive Fee, which covers tuition, room, board, and various other charges. The Comprehensive Fee for 2006-2007 is $44,350, subject to adjustment in accordance with changing operational costs. Estimated additional expenses total $2,050 for books, supplies, laundry, and incidentals.

The College provides need-based financial assistance for all of its students, including non-U.S. citizens who cannot fully meet the cost of the tuition. Merit and athletic-based scholarships are not offered. Financial aid awards are made on the basics of documented need, and are available only for students who decide to enroll at Bates. There is no particular amount of aid that is offered since each family`s circumstance is unique. The College pledges to meet demonstrated need in full for the duration of the student`s enrollment. Since Bayes makes this commitment to provide financial assistance, the competetion to be admitted is very intense.

A typical international financial aid package includes three parts: a Bates grant (which does not need to be repaid to the College]), a campus job that involves working up to 15 hours per week, and an annual contribution, usually earned through summer employment.

In 2006-2007 the average financial aid award for international students was $36,750. Each year international students at Bates receive financial aid packages that meet the full need of their families, totaling approximately $2 million.

Further information about Bates is available on the internet at http://www.bates. edu/. In the Admission section, you will find a direct link to the Bates international sites, as well as a link to common application, supplement and financial aid forms.

I welcome you to contact me with any questions.

Kind regards,
Kristin Crosby

Undergraduate Scholarships at Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts

Founded in 1821 for “the education of indigent young men of piety and talents,” Amherst College is now widely regarded as the premier liberal arts college in the nation, enrolling a diverse group of approximately 1,600 young men and women. Well known for its academic excellence, Amherst is also consistently ranked among the very best schools in the country in terms of accessibility: The college’s financial aid packages are consistently the most generous in the U.S., and among its peer universities and colleges Amherst has the greatest economic diversity. Diversity, in its broadest sense, is fundamental to Amherst’s mission. The college enrolls students
from every state and more than 40 countries, and for the past several years more than 35 percent of Amherst’s students have been students of color. Amherst offers the B.A. degree in 33 fields of study.

Amherst offers generous scholarships. Last year, Amherst provided more than $23 million in scholarship aid to about half of the student body. The average scholarship package was $31,393. The College’s financial aid program is regularly cited in U.S. News & World Report, Kiplinger's, Money magazine and other media as one of the country's best.

USA: Scholars from Europe at Michigan Law School

European Legal Studies Program at University of Michigan Law School

Opportunities for Scholars from Europe at Michigan

Enhancing its intellectual climate, and providing a welcome forum for academic engagement to scholars and officials from Europe, the Law School hosts numerous senior European faculty level visitors each year. These senior faculty level visitors typically join the School to teach a full course, to pursue a research project, or to participate in existing course offerings and informal workshops. Having come to Ann Arbor once, they frequently return.

In addition, the Law School hosts several scholars each year through a variety of programs which are open to European applicants on a competitive basis. Although funding is provided on a competitive basis through a variety of programs described below, many scholars come to Ann Arbor with their own resources to avail themselves of the School's supportive international and interdisciplinary intellectual environment, the plethora of visiting scholars, researchers, and practitioners, and our outstanding library facilities. European scholars interested in applying to these programs (other than degree candidates) are encouraged to contact Dean Virginia
Gordan prior to their application:

a.. Grotius Fellows (Faculty Level)
Each year, the Law School invites several outstanding international faculty, including faculty from Europe, to join the community for stays of varying lengths to complete scholarly projects. Funding is available on a competitive basis.

b.. Jean Monnet Research Fellows (Faculty Level)
In addition to the more general Grotius fellowship for law faculty, the Law School has conducted an annual competition for the Michigan Law School Jean Monnet Research Fellowship, a dedicated award to one or two junior professors of law or related disciplines for a stay of up to six months to pursue completion of a scholarly project on European integration.

c.. Grotius Fellows (LL.M., Doctoral, & Post-Doctoral)
European post-doctoral scholars intending to pursue research at Michigan; European doctoral students seeking to conduct research toward their dissertation at the Law School; or students seeking admission to our LLM or S.J.D. Program may apply for funding through the Grotius program on a competitive basis. All degree candidates must apply for such funding as part of their application for admission. Others may contact Dean Virginia Gordan for further information. Regardless of funding, our highly selective LL.M. and S.J.D. programs fully integrates these students, along with doctoral and post-doctoral research scholars, with the general J.D. student body. (Awards for J.D. students from Europe are made through the J.D. Admissions office as part of the admissions decision.)

d.. Fulbright Scholars
Each year the Law School hosts several Fulbright scholars, who come to the Law School as research scholars or students. If you are a European scholar or student seeking to participate in this program, please contact Dean Virginia Gordan who will assist you in contacting a potential faculty sponsor.

e.. Student Exchange Programs
The Law School also has a variety of specific exchange agreements with select European Universities, such as the European University Institute in Florence, bringing a small number of exceptional students and scholars from Europe to Ann Arbor each year. Please contact your home institution for further information about these programs.

USA: University of Michigan Law School Research Scholar Program

The Law School offers a non-degree research scholar program, attractive to legal scholars from around the world.

This program is designed to meet the varying needs of scholars who engage in major research projects for which the Law School's outstanding library can be of considerable assistance. Research scholars enjoy full access to the Law School's library and research facilities, including Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis, to pursue their individual research agendas. They are welcome to observe classes with the permission of the professor and to participate in the Law School's workshops and lecture series.

How to Apply

The research scholar program is intended primarily for junior and senior faculty members in law or in cognate fields at universities throughout the world. It is also available to individuals from abroad engaged in public service careers or in doctoral or post-doctoral studies. Every effort is made to welcome research scholars into the intellectual and social life of the School. Research scholars who are faculty in their own countries are invited to participate in the faculty lunches and colloquia which occur at the Law School on an almost daily basis. Most are provided library carrels with Internet access in which to pursue their work.

In recent years, our research scholar program has included faculty members from the University of Lisbon in Portugal, the Australian National University, Kyoto University in Japan, the University of Heidelberg in Germany, Peking University, and the University of Hong Kong, as well as the director of the Institute of State and Law of the Czech Academy of Sciences, a legal advisor to Amnesty International in London, and a staff member of the Japanese Ministry of Justice. Their research interests have encompassed a broad array of legal and interdisciplinary subjects. The Law School welcomes 10 to 20 research scholars annually. Their campus visits vary in length from a few weeks to one year and they may start at any time. If a
research scholar would like to observe classes, he or she is encouraged to time the visit with the beginning and end of our terms. Unless visits are scheduled according to the academic calendar, research scholars may find it more difficult to obtain reasonably priced housing accommodations.

In addition to the resources offered by the Law School, research scholars have access to the considerable intellectual and cultural activities at the University of Michigan and in Ann Arbor. Frequently the interests of research scholars bring them in contact with faculty in other departments of the University such as economics or public policy studies or in the many centers that focus on significant regions of the world, such as the European Union Center and the centers for Japanese studies, for Chinese studies, or for Russian and East European studies, to name just a few.

Research scholars pay no tuition or fees. Those interested in visiting the Law School should send the Center for International and Comparative Law their curriculum vita, a publication list, proposed dates of stay, an outline of their intended research project, and a description of how a research scholarship will be of value. If there are particular faculty members with whom they would like to confer, they should so indicate. It is also helpful to know their interest in informally observing particular classes. Applicants for the research scholar program whose native language is not English should indicate their degree of fluency in English,
specifically speaking and listening comprehension, and describe their training and experience in English. They should also provide two letters of reference from faculty members familiar with their work. TOEFL and academic records may also be requested.

Research scholar applicants with an interest in the Law School's Program in Refugee and Asylum Law should request additional information by writing to the Center for International and Comparative Law at the address below or e-mailing wls@umich.edu.

Financial Assistance

University of Michigan Grotius Fellowships are available for some research scholars. However, most are supported by funds from other sources such as Fulbright or sabbatical leave salary of their home university. Because of competition for fellowship support, not all applicants receive them. Applicants are encouraged to seek alternate funding sources.

The University of Michigan Law School also offers a fellowship in law, the Jean Monnet Research Fellowship, for junior scholars to spend six months in residence at the U-M Law School conducting research and writing a publishable paper on European integration. The fellowship provides up to $20,000 for a six-month stay at the U-M Law School beginning between January 15, 2006, and March 1, 2006, and ending no later than August 31, 2006.

Although research scholar applications are welcome at any time, applicants are encouraged to apply by February 15 for visits proposed in the following summer, fall, or winter terms, or if they are seeking financial assistance.

Whenever possible, applications should be submitted electronically to the e-mail address below. Otherwise they may be sent by mail or fax to the address below. Letters of recommendation may be sent by fax or e-mail by the writer.

Advanced Legal Studies at University of Michigan Law School

The University of Michigan Law School in Ann Arbor is one of the world's finest institutions of legal education. Located on the University of Michigan’s Central Campus, in the beautiful William W. Cook Law Quadrangle, the Law School is home to a faculty widely recognized as among the nation's best, and to over 20,400 alumni worldwide, who hold prestigious positions in the public, private, and academic sectors in the United States and abroad and speak eloquently to the strength of the School.

Michigan Grotius Fellowships and Other Financial Support

Applicants to the graduate programs at the University of Michigan Law School are welcome to apply for Michigan Grotius Fellowships to assist in financing their graduate studies. Applying for financial aid, including Grotius Fellowships, does not affect a candidate’s admissions decision, as all financial awards are determined only after admissions decisions have been made.

In making its selections, the Fellowship Committee evaluates an applicant’s commitment to academic excellence, seriousness and depth of purpose and promise of professional success. It takes a particular interest in an applicant’s pursuit of a career in academia or public service. In a typical year, between 30 and 40 percent of graduate students attending the University of Michigan Law School have been selected as Grotius Fellows.

Grotius Fellows are free to pursue their chosen program of graduate legal study and are not subject to any additional academic requirements. Past recipients of Michigan Grotius Fellowships have become leaders of the legal profession in their respective home countries as well as in the international community – serving on the highest courts of their countries, on international courts, and in prominent positions in government, international organizations, and academic institutions around the world.

Financial aid recipients are selected among all admitted students who have requested assistance. Michigan Grotius Fellowships are awarded based on a combination of the student’s financial need and his or her academic and professional background. Students wishing to apply for a Michigan Grotius Fellowship must complete the financial information in the application form.

Due to the many outstanding applications we receive, the demand for financial aid always exceeds available funds. Applicants are therefore strongly encouraged to also seek funding elsewhere from a variety of public and private sources, and to contact their home governments and employers, as well as the U.S. Embassy or Consulate, to seek advice and sponsorship for study abroad. Employment during the academic year is strongly discouraged.

Call for Papers
Vol. 3, No. 2, April 2008
Institutional Reforms and State Capacity

CEU Political Science Journal is a peer review publication established at the beginning of 2006 within the academic community of Central European University, Budapest. It is primarily targeted to promote the work of graduate students and young scholars with a special interest in the CEE space, welcoming also valuable contributions outside this focus.

This issue aims to gather contributions that focus on understanding the profound changes occurred at the level of role and function of the state and the institutional changes undertaken after the fall of the Communist regimes. The contributions are expected to focus on the structural transformation of state institution followed in the attempt to create new political, economic and social systems in the post-Communist societies. Some of the questions that could be answered are: What is the impact of institutional and cultural legacies of the Communist era on the institutional setting and development of post-communist societies? What factors shaped the evolution State agencies’ financial capacity, enforcement power, and organizational resources? What was the role of institutional transformation in creating democracy and capitalism simultaneously? How did the distribution of institutional reforms affect the distribution of resources and power alongside the vertical structures
of the State (decentralization) ? What are the reforms meant to promote accountability, transparency and good governance? What was the role of the EU accession process in guiding these changes? What are the effects of institutional imports, given the fitness with the existing institutional environment?

The Journal contains a special Work in Progress section designed to present research still under finalization and PhD research proposals. Moreover, the section of book reviews approaches the relevant books in Political Science and related fields. CfA: Clandestino Project-Employment Opportunity for Migration Expert

Call for Experts
in Italy, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Morocco, Ukraine for the project CLANDESTINO: Undocumented Migration: Counting the Uncountable. Data and Trends Across Europe

The project
CLANDESTINO is a research project funded by the European Commission, under the Sixth Framework Programme, Priority 8, Scientific Support to Policies (Contract no: CIS8-044130) .

This project responds to the need for more reliable and systematic data on undocumented migration in the European Union. Designing and implementing relevant policies is highly dependent on such data and estimates. Building a reliable picture of the undocumented migration in the EU involves providing an inventory of data and estimates on undocumented migration (stocks and flows), and analysing critically the
existing methods of data collection and calculation of estimates on undocumented migration in the countries selected. In doing so, the ethical and methodological issues involved in the collection of data, the elaboration of estimates and their use
are highlighted and discussed. Concrete products of this project will be the design of a system of evaluation and classification of existing data/estimates, the creation of a database on undocumented migration to which this system will be
applied, and the drafting of guidelines for an ethical policy for mapping the undocumented migration phenomenon in Europe. The project's Consortium consists of six partners:

Hellenic Foundation of European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP) Athens (Co-ordinator) ; Centre for International Relations (CIR), Warsaw; Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWI), Hamburg; Centre for the Study of Migration Policy and Society
(COMPAS), Oxford; International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), Vienna; Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), Brussels. The countries studied include Greece, Italy, France and Spain in southern Europe; Netherlands, UK, Germany and Austria in Western and Central Europe; Poland, Hungary, Slovakia in Central Eastern Europe, and three countries near the EU borders who are often used as `stepping stones' for irregular migrants: Ukraine, Turkey and
Morocco.

Task description
The country experts to whom this Call is addressed will be required to review empirical and theoretical research on undocumented migration within their country of expertise, conduct expert interviews particularly in countries with few secondary sources and write a country report in English. This task can be broken down in the following three parts:

- Providing an inventory of data and estimates on undocumented migration (stocks and flows) and assessing its validity and reliability.

- Offering an overview of undocumented migration and its social, demographic, economic and political parameters in the selected countries under study.

- Providing for a critical overview of national policies on undocumented migration.

A detailed questionnaire is currently tested and will be available by the end of Febuary 2008.

Requirements
In order to deliver the above, the experts should have excellent knowledge of migration situations in their country, a proven ability to write in English and, ideally, experience and expertise in the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the
undocumented migration phenomenon. Remuneration ranges between 3,000 and 4,000 Euro depending on the country of residence and seniority level. Deadline for draft reports is 15 June 2008 and final reports are due at the end of September 2008. Do not hesitate to ask for details or clarification (address below).

Deadline for applications: 1 December 2007
Please send your application to the attention of Dr. Thanos Maroukis (thmaroukis@eliamep. gr) , containing a motivation letter (explanations concerning your suitability to the project's requirements) ; Your full CV including a list of publications; copies of 2 recent and relevant publications. Applications are accepted only via e-mail. Please attach your motivation letter and CV as one file. As filename use your surname. Important: Write `CLANDESTINO' as first word in the subject line in this and all further e-mail communications.

CfP: Transatlantic Dialogues. Eastern Europe, The U.S., and Post-Cold War Cultural Spaces

Call for Papers
Workshop*

Transatlantic Dialogues. Eastern Europe, The U.S., and Post-Cold War Cultural Spaces

This Workshop is organized within the framework of the Fifth International Conference of the Romanian Association for American Studies, “The Sense of America. Histories into Text.”

Time and place: 24th of May, 2008, The University of Bucharest, Bucharest.

The workshop focuses on the topical issue of transatlantic relations in the post-Cold War period, and specifically addresses the question of transatlantic exchanges, representations and misrepresentations that characterize this age of transition and upheaval. Post-communism, itself a highly volatile term, has come to signify a cluster of historical, social, cultural, economic discourses about change in Eastern Europe. While Cold War mythology was largely responsible for drawing up a vision of a highly polarized world, the post-Cold War configuration is still undergoing a process of negotiation to account for new structures of organization that cut across fields as diverse as culture, literature, education, politics, social life, economics. The organisers welcome approaches dealing with the multiple binds of post-Cold War configurations from a variety of disciplinary and inter-disciplinary perspectives including literature, history, political science, sociology, economy, visual arts, media and film studies, popular culture. Papers may address themes such as those below:
- converging discourses: post-communism, post-colonialism, post-modernism
- the post-communist transition and the renegotiation of Eastern European identity
- the postmodern ethos and post-Cold War cultural/social dynamics
- Eastern European predicaments and models for the future
- the “end of history” in transatlantic perspective
- transatlantic relations in the age of globalization
- U.S. cultures in Eastern European contexts
- exporting Eastern Europe to the USA: techniques of representation and dissemination
- post-Cold War U.S. literary and media discourses about Eastern Europe.

The organizers are inviting proposals for 20 minute papers on these and other themes related to the topic of the workshop.

Please submit 300-word abstracts by January 31st 2008 to the following address:
transatlanticdialog ues@gmail. com

A selection of papers will be published in the workshop proceedings.

For further questions, please contact prof. dr. Rodica Mihaila, Dr. Roxana Oltean or Ioana Luca at transatlanticdialog ues@gmail. com

*The workshop is part of the research project entitled The Romanian Cultural Space in Transatlantic Perspective: From Postcommunism to Post-accession supported by UEFISCSU (PNII Idei 1000/2007).
