MIRICO – Human and Minority Rights in the Life Cycle of Ethnic Conflicts

CALL FOR PAPERS

Funded by the European Commission’s Framework Programme 6, MIRICO is developing substantial and procedural concepts for the management of diversity in ethnically and culturally diverse states that can help preventing conflict and overcoming its consequences with a view to mainstreaming conflict prevention into the programming of all aspects of EU foreign policy.

The Conference

Marking the conclusion of the MIRICO project, the University of Frankfurt – Wilhelm Merton Centre for European Integration and International Economic Order is hosting a two-day series of panel discussions focussed on the following themes:

1. Re-thinking Minority Rights Accommodation in the Context of Crisis Management.
2. Addressing Police and Judiciary Issues in the Western Balkans (Challenges for EU Missions in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in Kosovo).
3. Re-constructing National Identities – Internal and External Actors at Work in South Eastern Europe.
4. Universalism vs. Regionalism – Lessons from the Western Balkans for the Future of Multifunctional Peace Support Operations.
5. Re-active vs. Pro-active Crisis Management – The International Community in South Eastern Europe.
6. Kosovo and the Right to Self-Determination.
7. The Future Role of the EU in Enhancing Effective Multilateralism and Global Governance.
8. The Future Role of the EU and Other International Organisations in Pursuing Democratic Governance in Post-Conflict Reconstruction.
9. International Actors and the Promotion of Reconciliation through State-and Nation-building – Sustainable Solutions for Countries in Transition.
10. International Military Operation in the Western Balkans and beyond – NATO and Its Co-operation with Other International Organisations.

Call for Paper Proposal
The organisers encourage interested scholars and practitioners to submit paper proposals on any of the above themes. Accepted papers will be presented at the conference by their author(s) and be made available before the conference at the MIRICO and Merton Centre websites.

The deadline for submission is May 31, 2008. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and be submitted electronically to the conference Secretariat using the paper submission form available at the MIRICO and Merton Centre websites.

Notification of acceptance will be communicated by June 15, 2008. Authors are required to submit full papers not exceeding 8,000 words by 15 October 2008.

Conference Publication
The conference organisers are planning to edit a volume containing a selection of the best conference papers. Details will be communicated to authors of selected papers after the conference.

Travel and Accommodation
The conference organisers are unable to cover travel and accommodation expenses of participants.
