Postdoc: EAWAG Switzerland Plankton Community Evolution

Eawag is the Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology, a Swiss-based and internationally operating aquatic research institute within the ETH domain. The Department Aquatic Ecology (group of Bas Ibelings) seeks for a Postdoc in plankton community evolution

The Postdoc will work on a 3 year project in which long term continuous data on
phytoplankton abundance and diversity are collected in lake ecosystems (using in situ scanning flowcytometry) and studied for patterns in community assembly. The role of ecological assortment and trait evolution on phylogenetic clustering / overdispersion will be studied.

The study forms a basis for better understanding the impact of climate change on
lakes in (pre)Alpine regions. For this, directly from Eawag financed project, we are looking for a highly motivated candidate. The ideal candidate has modeling and good statistical skills and a demonstrable interest in plankton ecology and evolution. We offer a stimulating research environment in a lively and social institute in Kastanienbaum (near Luzern), where several other evolutionary and ecologically oriented aquatic research groups are based.

The position will be for a period of three years, and may start from May 2008 onwards. A PhD degree in biology or related subject is necessary for admission. The working language in the group is English. The project is a collaborative effort between different departments in Eawag. Amongst others a close collaboration with the group of Prof. Reichert (Department of System Analysis, Integrated Assessment
and Modeling) on further development of biogeochemical lake models is foreseen. Part of the work will be done in the Netherlands (Group of Prof. Jef Huisman) where the phytoplankton field dataset will be analyzed for chaotic patterns.

Transfer of the knowledge (e.g. on innovative monitoring techniques) to stakeholders like the Swiss Cantons is a relevant part of the final stages of the project. Applications should include a letter of interest with a description of pertinent experience, curriculum vitae, a list of publications, the names (with e-mail address) of two potential reviewers, and copies of the certificates of academic qualifications.

Please submit your application by 1 March 2008 as one PDF file to Sandra Isenring, Eawag, Human Resources Department: recruiting@eawag. ch, indicating reference number 084402 For further information, consult http://www.eawag.ch or contact Bas Ibelings (Tel + 41 41 349 2174), bas.ibelings@ eawag.ch Bas.Ibelings@ eawag.ch

Postdoc: Russia Salmon Parasite Evolutionary Genetics

Title- Russian speaking post-doctoral/ PhD student position in salmon parasite evolutionary genetics A position is available for up to 2.5 years to work as part of a collaborative project aimed at understanding the molecular and ecological mechanisms that have contributed to evolution of Gyrodactylus parasite resistance in Atlantic salmon populations of the Karelian republic in Russia.

Our earlier research has demonstrated that a remarkable feature of this host-parasite system is that there is a gradient of parasite tolerance which mirrors the phylogeography of Atlantic salmon:

The freshwater salmon of Karelia (in Lakes Onega and Ladoga) have the longest common history with the parasite and have evolved almost complete immunological resistance.

The project consortium includes research groups in Finland (Prof. Craig Primmer at the University of Turku: http://users.utu.fi/ primmer ; Prof. Jaakko Lumme at the University of Oulu: http://cc.oulu. fi/~jlumme/ ) and Russia (Dr. Alexei Veselov at the Karelian Research Center: http://ib.krc. karelia.ru/ ). The successful applicant should be able to communicate fluently in both English and Russian and have a strong background in evolutionary genetics and/or fish parasitology plus an interest in multi-disciplinary research on these topics.

The successful applicant would be expected to spend extended periods of time in each of the research groups as well as in the field in northwest Russia. Informal inquires and applications. Applications in BOTH English and Russian should be emailed as pdf attachments to Craig Primmer (craig.primmer@ utu.fi) and should include a full CV and publication list, a free-form letter indicating current research interests and motivation for applying for the position and names and contact details of at least two referees.

Prospective post docs should also include a statement of previous research and supervision experience and prospective PhD students should send a formal university document outlining courses taken during their degree. Review of applications will commence on 15.2 with the preferred starting date being April 2008. The salary range is approximately 2350-2600 EUR per month for post-docs and 1730-2050 for PhD students, depending on the level of previous experience of the candidate.

WORKSHOP: "Migration Policy and Narratives of Societal Steering"

The Universities of Edinburgh and Sheffield are convening a series of workshops on "Migration Policy and Narratives of Societal Steering", funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council.

The seminar series seeks to map 'narratives of societal steering' in migration policy: the norms and beliefs espoused by policy-makers about the societal impacts of their policy interventions. The seminars bring together policy-makers, practitioners and researchers to analyse and interpret different narratives of societal steering in three areas: migration control, immigrant integration, and relations with countries of origin/transit. Of particular interest is how policy makers absorb and apply knowledge produced at different sites (in the administration,
research, voluntary sector or media) to develop narratives about the impacts of their policies on processes of migration control and socio-cultural integration.

The second workshop will be held on Friday 14th March 2008 at Sheffield University. The theme will be 'Narratives of societal steering to promote integration and inclusion'. It will explore beliefs about how state interventions influence acculturation and the internalisation of host society norms on the part of immigrants and ethnic minority groups.

It will focus on recent UK and European policies to make naturalization conditional on language or citizenship tests; as well as policies to prevent radicalization within the Muslim community. The seminar will explore discourse on socio-cultural integration within the media and policy communities in the UK, comparing these to discourses in Germany, France, Sweden, and at EU level. Of especial interest is how far states have adopted populist narratives about societal interventions, in order
to respond to public anxieties about identity and security.

We invite proposals for papers on the following themes:
* Policy paradigms, conceptualisations, or discourse in the UK and Europe regarding the impact of legislation and programmes on integration and inclusion
* Patterns of knowledge utilisation within the Home Office/other departments dealing with integration and inclusion
* Media, think tank, academic or NGO constructions of the impact of policy on integration and inclusion
* Comparisons between narratives in the UK and in other countries (especially in the EU and North America)

Please send an abstract of no more than 500 words to Andrew Geddes (A.Geddes@sheffield. ac.uk). The deadline for proposals is Friday 8th February.

Travel and accommodation costs for paper givers will be covered by the organisers. Some funding is also available to support the participation of PhD students.

Fulbright Scholar in Social Sciences

Dear Fulbright Program alumni:

I am pleased to inform you of the availability of a Fulbright program grant for a senior scholar in the Social Sciences like Sociology or Anthropology to help develop an Islamic Studies program at the University of Redlands, California. Specifically, the university is looking for a scholar from Indonesia or Malaysia, countries that are predominately Muslim but are not in the Middle East and have significant non-Islamic populations.

The scholar would teach four upper-division courses and guest lecture in two introductory Social Science courses, focusing on the social, ethnic, political and ideological diversity of Islam. The scholar would also be the primary host of a year-long thematic series for the campus community on the Islamic World. Finally, the scholar would give presentations hosted by the diversity-related centers on campus and at Faculty Forums, as well as have the opportunity to interact in a variety of ways with the community around the University of Redlands.

Outstanding scholars and professionals, preferably in the Social Sciences like Sociology or Anthropology, who will be able to link religion to other areas of life, such as law, sexuality, science, kinship, technology, and the environment, are invited to apply. The actual discipline of the scholar is of less concern; the school is more interested in reinforcing and deepening the interdisciplinary focus of their programs. The scholar must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in their discipline. As the scholar will be expected to consult with faculty and administration on the programmatic needs and design of an Islamic Area Studies and to teach upper division courses, the school would prefer the scholar has a minimum of three years teaching experience at the university level. The scholar must be a citizen or permanent resident of and residing in Indonesia. The selected candidate will begin the program in August 2008 for a full academic year (10 months)
assignment.

Please let us know if you have potential candidates to recommend so we could send her/him the application and letter of reference forms as well as more detailed information on the assignment. Please note that the application deadline to AMINEF is February 30, 2008.

We would appreciate your assisting us in identifying potential candidates for this program and direct them to contact us to apply. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or senior program officer Piet Hendrardjo (piet@aminef. or.id) at your earliest convenience. Thank you and best wishes.

PhD students and Research Assistant Position - University Freiburg

We are looking for two PhD students and one Research Assistant for a newly founded research group funded by the Emmy-Noether- Program of the DFG at the Institute for Biology III / Albert-Ludwigs- University Freiburg.

Salaries are funded according to TV-L with the PhD positions as part-time position (50%).

Our research group analyses the regulatory network surrounding the Ras/ERK signal transduction pathway and its importance for various physiological and pathological processes, in particular those of oncological relevance. To this end, we apply a broad spectrum of methods ranging from molecular biology over protein biochemistry and proteomics to cellular and in vivo approaches. All successful applicants will have experience in one or several of these methodologies, should show initiative and a certain level of independence, but also enjoy working in a team. Basic English communication skills are desirable. Experience in laboratory organisation is a plus for the Research Assistant position.

For the PhD student positions, preference will be given to candidates that have demonstrated a high level of undergraduate achievement, are keen to acquire and develop novel techniques and have a strong interest in science.
Interdisciplinary studies in the area of signal transduction are conducted in Freiburg with great success since several decades. This is reflected by several Collaborative Research Centres (SFB) with topics on signal transduction, the Centre for Systems Biology (ZBSA) and in particular by the recent success of the University with the projects Centre for Biological Signalling Studies (BIOSS) and the Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine in the German Excellence Initiative. Consequently, our laboratory is embedded in an outstanding research environment with excellent expertise and infrastructure.
Freiburg is the “capital” of the Black Forest and a lively university town located in the Rhine valley shared by Switzerland, France and Germany. The University of Freiburg is an equal opportunity employer.

CfP: OpenForum Berlin, Promoting Citizenship by Education? Vilnius, 14 - 16 March 2008

Is it actually possible to teach citizenship, or at least its foundations? Or is it the example of persons of full moral integrity jointly defending their personal freedom representatively for all others that makes the difference?

On 14 - 16 March 2008, we are hosted by the European Humanities University (EHU), a
"University in Exile" founded in Minsk/Belarus in 1992 to build a productive dialogue with Europe and the world in order to overcome the intellectual enclosure of Belarus. It was closed down by the authorities in Minsk in 2004 because of its links to European colleagues and the active participation in the Bologna Process, and is currently harboured on EU grounds in Vilnius/Lithuania.

Our OpenFora are opportunities for interested citizens to exchange views and experience on topics that go beyond mere European-integratio nist matters. They are designed as weekend debates, in order to be open for people of all generations.

Balkan Studies Training Workshop for Junior Scholars “Building Balkan Studies: Integrating Multidisciplinary Perspectives”

University of Illinois, Urbana–Champaign
June 30–July 2, 2008
www.reec.uiuc. edu/srl/srl. html

This workshop is part of the Summer Research Laboratory on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia; organized by the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center and the Slavic and East European Library at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; and funded in part by the U.S. Department of State Title VIII program.

Workshop Moderator
Julie Mostov, Associate Vice Provost for International Programs and Associate Professor of Political Science, Drexel University

Workshop Goals
The central aim of this three-day workshop is to bring together advanced graduate students, junior faculty and other professionals who focus on the modern Balkans in various disciplines to discuss their work and issues in the field. Although massive political change and the Yugoslav wars regularly put the region on the front page of major newspapers throughout the 1990s, Balkan studies is still a relatively underrepresented field. The workshop’s objectives are to foster a supportive network of colleagues involved in this field and to explore recent research paradigms and
resources. Comparative work is strongly encouraged. The workshop will provide a superb forum in which to investigate a variety of issues, including, but not limited to, the following:

§ State formation and democratization
§ Status of Kosovo
§ Privatization and the creation of new market economies
§ Ethnopolitics and the civil rights of minorities
§ The role of language (identity and citizenship; maintenance, shift, and endangerment)
§ Law reform, the writing of new legal codes, and rethinking intellectual property rights
§ Human security (terrorism, trafficking of women and children, organized crime syndicates)
§ Demographic movement (displaced peoples, diasporic formations, refugees, guest workers)
§ The culture of socialism and postsocialism
§ Education (rewriting of curricula; establishment of new institutions for higher learning)
§ Popular culture and contemporary society
§ The arts, social change, and postsocialist identity (literature, fine arts, architecture)
§ The changing position of Balkan states vis-à-vis the EU, the U.S., Russia, and the Middle East
§ Religion in the Balkans
§ Gender, especially changing roles and images of women in society

Workshop Format
Workshop sessions will be devoted to a discussion of the participants’ research; investigation of current literature and paradigms; and a presentation of scholarly resources, including relevant databases by staff specialists from the Slavic and East European Library. Time will also be available for research in the UI Libraryone of the largest Slavic and East European collections in the U.S. Participants may stay beyond the workshop dates to conduct individual research.

Workshop Eligibility
The workshop is open to advanced graduate students and junior faculty in any discipline and professionals who specialize in the modern Balkans. To be eligible for workshop housing and travel grants, which are funded by a U.S. State Department Title VIII grant, applicants must be U.S. citizens/permanent residents and must state the policy relevance (broadly defined) of their research in the application. Limited space and housing grant available for international scholars. Depending on space availability, those who do not qualify for financial support may participate in the workshop at their own expense. Please see the Summer Lab website (url below) for more information.

Housing and Travel Grants
Participants who are eligible for workshop housing and travel grants (see eligibility) may also apply for additional research housing grantsa total of up to 14 days for graduate students; 8 for all others. Graduate students (US citizens/permanent residents only) may also apply for travel grants of up to $200. Please see the website for more detailed information.

Deadline
1 April 2008 for international applications (limited housing grant only) 15 April 2008 for US citizen/permanent resident applications

Application
All participants are considered Summer Lab associates and must submit a Summer Research Lab application and application fee. To apply for financial assistance, applicants must also submit a one- to two-page research proposal that includes a statement clearly indicating the policy relevance of the proposed research. Workshop space is limited.

Culture militaire et patriotisme dans la Russie dÂ’aujourdÂ’hui

[Military Culture and Patriotism in TodayÂ’s Russia]

Anne Le Huérou and Elisabeth Sieca-Kozlowski (Eds)

Paris: Karthala, 2008

With its commemorations celebrating bravery and heroism in combat, its exaltation of patriotism in political discourse and in the public space, its putting forward of foreign policy and the armed forces with a view to regaining the status of a great power, Russia today seems engulfed in an unprecedented wave of patriotism, whose most radical forms – the discourse on Russian « national preference », racist attacks, say nothing of the extreme violence of the Chechen conflict – are worrying. This book, a collection of articles by specialists on subjects dealing with military education, relations between the Church and the Army, the reform of the
army, the production of patriotic TV serials, strategies for the control of information, focuses on the role of the military in contemporary Russian institutions and society with particular emphasis, apart from their spectacular side, on the production, diffusion and implementation of patriotic and military discourse and initiatives.

Call for Papers
Vol. 3, No. 2, April 2008
Institutional Reforms and State Capacity

CEU Political Science Journal is a peer review publication established at the beginning of 2006 within the academic community of Central European University, Budapest. It is primarily targeted to promote the work of graduate students and young scholars with a special interest in the CEE space, welcoming also valuable contributions outside this focus.

This issue aims to gather contributions that focus on understanding the profound changes occurred at the level of role and function of the state and the institutional changes undertaken after the fall of the Communist regimes. The contributions are expected to focus on the structural transformation of state institution followed in the attempt to create new political, economic and social systems in the post-Communist societies. Some of the questions that could be answered are: What is the impact of institutional and cultural legacies of the Communist era on the institutional setting and development of post-communist societies? What factors shaped the evolution State agencies’ financial capacity, enforcement power, and organizational resources? What was the role of institutional transformation in creating democracy and capitalism simultaneously? How did the distribution of institutional reforms affect the distribution of resources and power alongside the vertical structures
of the State (decentralization) ? What are the reforms meant to promote accountability, transparency and good governance? What was the role of the EU accession process in guiding these changes? What are the effects of institutional imports, given the fitness with the existing institutional environment?

The Journal contains a special Work in Progress section designed to present research still under finalization and PhD research proposals. Moreover, the section of book reviews approaches the relevant books in Political Science and related fields. For further information, please check the website of the Journal (www.ceu.hu/ polscijournal) or contact the editorial board at ceu_polsci@yahoo. com.

CfP: Contemporary Critical Inquiry Through the Lens of Postsocialism

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

2008 SOYUZ ANNUAL MEETING
University of California, Berkeley
April 24-27, 2008

To apply for the conference please send: a paper abstract (no longer than 500 words) and a brief CV by February 15, 2008

(decisions concerning acceptance will be announced by March 1, 2008)

send applications to: Alexei Yurchak: yurchak@berkeley. edu

THE CONFERENCE THEME:

“Contemporary Critical Inquiry Through the Lens of Postsocialism”

The disintegration of Soviet and Eastern European socialisms not only ushered in rapid and overwhelming transformations in the former socialist lifeworlds, but also engendered the emergence of the problem-space of “postsocialism” that spans well beyond the boundaries of the former socialist states. In this year’s Soyuz conference, we would like to consider: how can theoretical insights gained in our critical engagements with postsocialism shed new light on questions central to contemporary anthropology and critical social inquiry more broadly.

For example, how might our inquiry of postsocialism illuminate:
• current global configurations of liberalism and neoliberalism, democracy and neo-conservatism, sovereignty and citizenship, biopower and international law, religion and secularism, risk and security, global capitalism and labor outsourcing?

• complex parallels between late socialist and late capitalist social formations at the level of institutions, practices, sentiments, knowledge, subjectivity, aesthetics?

• current postcolonial engagements (considering that the ideological opposition capitalism/socialis m, in relation to which postcolonial criticism emerged, is now in the past)?

We are now inviting submissions for the conference. The selected papers will interrogate the relevance of the theoretical insights gained in engagements with postsocialism for other contexts, areas and problems of contemporary world. They will consider the implications of postsocialism, both as a historical formation and as a problem-space, for the problems interrogated in contemporary anthropology and social inquiry.

The conference organizing committee:
Alexei Yurchak (UC Berkeley)
Dominic Boyer (Cornell)
Dace Dzenovska (UC Berkeley)

Nina Aron (UC Berkeley)

To apply for the conference please send an abstract (no longer than 500 words) and a brief CV by February 15, 2008
