Bridges Project is hosting a multi-national seminar in Edinburgh between 29 March 2009 and 1 April 2009. We welcome your applications to attend and participate in the seminar.

The seminar is the second in a series of three which has the long term objective of developing a network of local associations working directly with young people to provide better and easier access to youth exchanges, job-shadows, special projects. The development of the network will draw on the experience and principles which underpin the Franco-German exchange model between IB Stuttgart and Pointes Jeunes, Evreux. The seminars are funded through the European Citizenship Programme, Action 2, Measure 3. The first seminar took place in Evreux, France in November 2008 and the
final seminar will take place in Stuttgart in summer 2009. Participants are not required to attend all three seminars.

The first seminar examined the principles of the proposed network and looked at how young people can become active contributors within the network. In Edinburgh, we want to focus in on several themes:

1. Standards and competencies of associations within the network for European work with young people
2. Competencies and training for staff working with young people in the European context
3. Successful management of a multi-national network including use of web-based tools etc
4. Semantics and defining some common language
5. Involvement of young people - roles, training, funding etc

In Stuttgart will examine and finalise partnership agreements, evalaution frameworks for projects, training requirements for youth workers and youth and decide upon the final content of the proposed web-site.

We have arranged the hotel and the conference facilities in Edinburgh. We can accommodate 35 participants from Europe. We also have the possibilities of being able to extend the stay of some participants for a couple of nights to help with preparations, and with flight schedules, to enable participants to take advantage of low cost airline schedules. Hotel accommodation, food, airport transfer etc are covered by the programme funding. However, we do not have money to help with flight and transport costs.

The planning partners will be meeting during the week of 2 February to finalise a full programme. The closing date for confirmed notes of interest is 9 february 2009. The draft programme is attached. Linköping University (LiU) is characterized by cooperation across subject and faculty borders and by an entrepreneurial spirit in education. Since its foundation in the 1970's, the university has established itself as an innovative and modern institution in both education and research. For instance, LiU is actively engaged in becoming a gender-conscious university, through both research into gender issues, policy making, and more practical measures such as the existence of gender coordinators at each faculty. Scientific excellence and societal benefit are the two guiding principles of LiU. The university is committed not only to preparing its students for the future, but also to fostering research which will have a defining role in shaping this future. During the past decade LiU has experienced rapid
growth, involving the establishment of a new campus in the twin city of Norrköping. With a student population of 25 000 and 3 500 employees, LiU is one of the major universities in Sweden.

The Tema Institute (TEMA) at LiU aims to pursue excellent research and education at undergraduate and advanced levels relevant to society. The Tema Institute aims to provide a major impetus in career development for both future researchers and those who have just entered the field of research. The profile of TEMA since the start has been founded on an interdisciplinary environment, and today there is an emphasis on integrating education and research - to see education and research as interdependent. Important assets for the Institute are the extended responsibility for co-workers and the measures brought about to support progress in education and at the same time advance interdisciplinary research. The Institute is led by a Board and has approximately 200 employees, of which 60 are PhD-students. At the levels of
research, research training, post- and under graduate education, the Institute is characterized by multi- and interdisciplinary research areas where social scientists, scholars and natural scientists work together. TEMA is organized in four themes, besides Gender Studies (TEMA GENUS), there are also Child Studies, Technology and Social Change, Water and Environmental Studies.

Department of Gender Studies (TEMA GENUS) is a multi- and interdisciplinary unit of the Tema Institute committed to research, research training and under graduate education. TEMA GENUS engage with the changing patterns of gender in culture, society, economics, science, technology and knowledge production, in theory and practice, and from an interdisciplinary perspective. Gender is studied as intersected by other social categories (ethnicity, sexuality, age, etc). Five research streams are pursued as subprograms of TEMA GENUS. These are Gender and Culture (feminist cultural studies), Gender, Economic Change and Organization, Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities, and Posthumanities - which is closely allied to the fifth subprogram being developed, Gender and Knowledge Production with special reference to the Technical, Natural, and Medical Science Professions (feminist technoscience studies). In close collaboration with gender studies at Örebro University, and Department of Gender and Medicine of LiU, TEMA GENUS coordinates an international research centre, Centre of Gender Excellence (GEXcel). GEXcel is financed by contributions from the Swedish Research Council. TEMA GENUS is also the host of Nordic and national Swedish research schools (like InterGender) in interdisciplinary gender studies, and works closely with the Centre for Gender Studies and Gender Equality (FORUM). TEMA GENUS is also involved in a wide range of international networks and collaborations concerning research and education. More

CfP: Hrant Dink Memorial Workshop 2009: Gender, Ethnicity and the Nation-State: Anatolia and Its Neighboring Regions

Hrant Dink Memorial Workshop 2009

Gender, Ethnicity and the Nation-State: Anatolia and Its Neighboring Regions

May 21-24, 2009

Istanbul

We are pleased to announce our second workshop in memory of Hrant Dink. The theme of this year's workshop is "Gender, Ethnicity and the Nation-State: Anatolia and Its Neighboring Regions," focusing on the moments of transformation in gender relations and ethnic identity during both the construction of nation-states and their various transformation( s) throughout the 20th century.

Gender and ethnicity have been key categories of differentiation and conflict in nationalisms and nation-states, interacting with each other in multiple ways. Although nationalisms and nation-states typically claim equality as their basic organizing principle, the past century is marked by tensions in definitions and practices of gender and ethnicity. These tensions have taken violent forms during times of war and ethnic conflict, and have undergone transformations in response to processes of state-building, breakdown of states, socialism and postsocialism, forced or voluntary migrations within and across nation-states, democratization, and
the proliferation of social movements incuding feminist, LGBTT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Transgender) , and religious movements. Towards the end of the 20th century, globalization has triggered the crisis of the nation-state and its discourses, and the increasing prominence of supranational and subnational political processes have generated new conceptualizations of gender and ethnicity.

The goal of this year's workshop is to shed light on and problematize the multiple ways in which constructions and transformations of gender and ethnicity in and beyond nation-states have shaped Anatolia and its neighboring regions in the 20th century. Papers that examine contemporary transformations along the lines of gender and ethnicity are particularly welcome. Yet we are also interested in rethinking the transformation from empire to nation-state earlier in the century.

The turn of the 20th century was marked by radical changes in men's and women's lives in the Ottoman Empire. Established understandings of masculinity and femininity were challenged and redefined at the same time as ethnicity gained ground as an organizing political principle. The histories of this period have been dominated by Orientalist and nationalist scholarship. To this day, for instance, "Ottoman history" is often assumed to refer to "Turkish-Muslim" history and, in Turkey, statements that depict "the first novel", "the first woman novelist", "the first time women gained access to education", and so on, disregard the non-Muslim subjects of the Ottoman Empire and their public participation. Public and scholarly debates over how to account for the violent transformations of the 1910s and 1920s continue to be polarized. In recent years, a growing body of literature has challenged both the Orientalist and nationalist frameworks of earlier historiographies. Yet, there are surprisingly few studies that are able to move beyond methodological nationalism: histories of Armenian women, Turkish women, Kurdish women, Arab women, Greek women, and so on, exist as parallel, non-intersecting histories. There are even fewer studies that analyze masculinities, sexualities, and gender relations at large.

Drawing on Hrant Dink's legacy of exploring our "shared" histories, as well as our shared present and future, our aim in this workshop is to go beyond such methodological nationalism. We seek to encourage, instead, a debate on the contexts of differentiation (and unification) along gender and ethnic lines. We welcome all papers that explore the ways in which definitions and practices of gender and ethnicity have together shaped and have been shaped in turn by political and economic transformations in Anatolia and its neighboring regions from the early 20th into the 21st century.

Application deadline is March 1, 2009.

Islam, Modernity and the Muslim World
A New Agenda for the 21st Century

A Public Lecture by Seyyed Hossein Nasr
January 21, 2009
Wednesday 14.00-16.00 Istanbul

As we enter the 21st century, we face numerous new challenges and opportunities. Unlike the 19th century, the monopoly of modernity over the future of the world has been broken. Unlike the 20th century, the postmodern spirit of complete relativism and skepticism has been called into question. As a major world religion with a tradition of 14 centuries, Islam remains a vibrant religion with a distinct culture and civilization. Intellectually, the Muslim world continues to struggle with issues of tradition, modernity, post-modernity and globalization. Politically, much of global politics is directly related to Muslim countries. Socially, Muslim societies are struggling with the fact that they are old but at the same time new entities determined by modern national divisions. Islam-West relations have become even more pressing and crucial for the future of the world.

What are the challenges Islam as a religion faces in the 21st century? Is it possible to recover the Islamic intellectual tradition in the face of the fading experience of Western modernity? What does Islam have to say to the 21st century world? Can Islamic metaphysics and philosophy offer a fresh perspective on such issues as reason, religion, science, meaning and truth? Are such "big questions" still relevant in a highly technological and globalized world? Is Western modernity over?

What are the challenges Muslim societies will be facing in the near future? From education and pluralism to democracy and development and how will Muslim countries respond to the challenges of an increasingly globalized world?
Can Traditional Islam be an answer to these big questions?

Academia.edu, networking academia and its scholars

Dear all,

I recently finished my Ph.D at Oxford on the philosophy of perception. With a team of people from Stanford and Cambridge, I've just launched a website, Academia.edu, which does two things:

- It shows academics around the world structured in a 'tree' format, displayed according to their departmental and institutional affiliations.
- It enables academics to see news on the latest research in their area - the latest people, papers and talks.

We are hoping that Academia.edu will eventually list every academic in the world -- Faculty Members, Post-Docs, Graduate Students, and Independent Researchers. Academics can add their departments, and themselves, to the tree by clicking on the boxes.

Academics are joining the tree rapidly. More than 24,000 academics have added themselves in the last four months. Some professors on the site include:

- Richard Dawkins - http://oxford. academia. edu/RichardDawki ns
- Stephen Hawking - http://cambridge. academia. edu/StephenHawki ng
- Paul Krugman - http://princeton. academia. edu/PaulKrugman
- Noam Chomsky - http://mit.academia .edu/NoamChomsky
- Steven Pinker - http://harvard. academia. edu/StevenPinker

We're trying to spread the word about Academia.edu as much as possible. It would be terrific if you could visit the site, and add yourself to your department on the tree at http://www.academia .edu/signup? e-nass. If your university or research
institute is not there, you can add it.

Independent researchers - if you are a researcher that is not associated with a university, I encourage you to add yourself to the "Independent Researchers" portion of the tree at http://independent. academia. edu/signup? e-nass.

And do spread the word to your friends and colleagues if you can.

Many thanks,
Richard

New Policy Brief: "Turkey in the United Nations Security Council"

SETA Policy Brief

Turkey in the United Nations Security Council
by AKIF KIRECCI*

January 2009 | No: 28

Turkey¢s new seat in the UNSC marks a historic achievement for Turkish foreign policy since 1961. Turkish diplomatic corps around the world and political leaders have lobbied towards this end since 2003. In recent years, Turkey has expanded its foreign policy parameters not only in theory but in practice and reached out to disparate corners of the world. Turkey¢s present success offers challenges and opportunities together. While trying to contribute to international security, Turkey will face the requirement of transforming its domestic politics in accordance with the realities of the post Cold War era. Turkey¢s policies of bringing the conflicting sides together and initiating platforms for cooperation will be seen more often now in international politics.

Call for Book Chapters in the area of E-Research Collaboration

I want to share a call for book chapters by Springer-Verlag that's posted on the research collaboration website, MyNetResearch. com. It is for chapters in the area of E-Research Collaboration.

There are many interesting issues that relate to research partnerships between researchers in OECD countries and developing countries. For instance, Lee and Bozeman (2005) noted that only 5% of US research work involves collaborators from outside the States. It is the same with other countries. I have wondered if new web-based collaboration tools could lower the boundaries and increase collaboration between people from scattered countries or cultures. Anyhow, please take a look at the full post:

CfP: Conference on University Theatre in SEE, Zagreb, 1-3.4.2009

We invite all theatre theorists and practitioners, students and university professors as well as any other interested parties to register for the conference on the topic of theatre in university centres in South-Eastern Europe (tendencies and perspectives of student theatre activities and cooperation and networking opportunities) which will be held in Zagreb 1 – 3 April 2009 within the Test!9 Festival. (www.test.hr)

Attending the festivals and watching the theatre work at universities in Belgrade, Skopje, Ljubljana, Sarajevo, Priština, Sofia, Zagreb, and else, we were thrilled with creativity, enthusiasm, energy, skills and modernity of student theatre artists. Their performances are coming deeply from their cultural background and personal experience what makes them extraordinary and somehow different from the rest of the Europe. It is heritage which still needs proper cultural and sociological studies. We believe that regional network of student (university) theatre will make it possible.

Therefore the main objectives of the Conference within the frame of Test!9 as we conceptualized it is sharing experience and founding a network of people and organizations that make theatre/culture at universities in SEE.

This centre/network/ organization should help artists/students/ professors to connect, share their work and collaborate within this network as well as towards the rest of the Europe/World.

Any abstract related to these themes is welcomed by the organizers.IUTA/ AITU– International University Theatre Association, whose Test! is a member since 2000, encourage foundation of regional organizations. More about IUTA/AITU on: www.aitu-iuta. org

PhD Vacancy in Process Integration

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim represents academic eminence in technology and the natural sciences as well as in other academic disciplines ranging from the social sciences, the arts, medicine, architecture to fine art. Cross-disciplinary cooperation results in innovative breakthroughs and creative solutions with far-reaching social and economic impact.

Faculty of Engineering Science and Techology
Department of Energy and Process Engineering

PhD Scholarship in the area of Process Integration with focus on LNG, Thermodynamics and Optimization in the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (IVT-03/09)

In the Department of Energy and Process Engineering there is from the middle of 2009 (or slightly earlier if possible) a vacant position as PhD student within the area of Process Integration with special focus on LNG, Thermodynamics and Optimization. The position will be offered and funded for 3 years with very limited teaching obligations, and it is part of collaboration between NTNU and MIT in Boston, USA. Thus, there will also be a PhD student at MIT working on these topics, and both positions are sponsored by StatoilHydro.

Process Integration in this context means design of integrated production systems and energy plants with special emphasis on efficient resource utilization (energy and raw materials) with the lowest possible equipment cost. The application area for this particular PhD program will be sub ambient processes with special focus on natural gas liquefaction (LNG). The objective is to jointly develop new design
methodologies and innovative process concepts. With the increased focus on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in society, this research should also include considerations related to elegant and efficient ways to deal with the CO2 problem.

In the Department of Energy and Process Engineering, there is a group working on developing methods and being involved in industrial applications of Process Integration. This group has, with considerable success, combined the development of new methodologies with developing new process concepts. It is this interface between theory and practice that has proven to be a good arena for creative solutions both with respect to methods/tools and process solutions.

In the selection of candidate for this position, emphasis will be on the applicant¢s knowledge about areas such as Process Integration, Design and Optimization of Industrial Plants, Thermodynamics (including knowledge about Exergy) and experience in Simulation and Modeling. To be eligible for this position, the applicant must have a M.Sc. degree or similar within the relevant area. Experience from industrial
projects will of course give the applicant extra credit. The engagement in this position depends on the acceptance of the applicant as a PhD student at NTNU.

More information about the position can be obtained from Professor
Truls Gundersen, phone +47-7359-3721 or +47-9168-1726, e-mail: truls.gundersen@ ntnu.no

Cultural Genocide: Call for Papers

Cultural Genocide

When Raphael Lemkin coined the term genocide during World War II, he initially had a broader idea of the concept, namely that a group could be effectively destroyed by an attack on its social institutions and cultural heritage, even without the physical obliteration of its members. Since Lemkin, scholars have defined cultural genocide as a form of persecution involving the deliberate destruction of the culture of a people, ranging from violence against material and immaterial culture to assaults on identities of groups. Such destruction is wrought in a variety of ways, typically including restrictions upon of a group's language and traditions,
the use of boarding schools to forcibly assimilate children, the ruination of objects and institutions, and the persecution of political, cultural,
intellectual, and religious elites.

Journal of Genocide Research
History abounds with examples of cultural genocide. The expansion of Europe from 1492 on, for example, can be read as a long process of (un)intended destruction of indigenous cultures on the American and Australian continents. Other examples include the Russian colonization of the Caucasus, Chinese rule in Tibet, the Japanese occupation of Korea, Nazi policies in occupied Poland, Young Turk cultural policies in Eastern Turkey, and the destruction of Islamic architecture in Bosnia. How can cultural genocide be conceptualized? Why do political elites launch policies to eradicate cultures? How effective are these policies? To what degree are processes of nation formation tantamount to cultural genocide?

This thematic issue of the Journal of Genocide Research aims to contribute to our understanding of cultural genocide. The editors welcome original and innovative articles dealing with all possible aspects of cultural genocide. After initial editor screening, all submissions will undergo peer review. Proposals (max 1.5 pages) for papers should be submitted together with a short curriculum vitae by 1 March 2009 both to the editors of the JGR

Dominik J. Schaller (dominik.schaller@ uni-heidelberg. de)

Jürgen Zimmerer (j.zimmerer@sheffiel d.ac.uk) and to the guest editor
ugur.ungor@gmail. com

The articles, which should be a maximum of 8500 words including
documentation, will be due on 1 July 2009.
