Research fellow in Petroleum Eng, Univ of Stavanger, Norway

Closing date July 31, 2009.

The University of Stavanger invites applications for a three-year doctorate scholarship in petroleum engineering at the Faculty of Science and Technology in the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

The title of the project is “*Frontier petroleum geology exploration*” .

*Accretionary prisms are large wedges of sedimentary rocks that have been scrapped off the top of the descending oceanic plate along convergent plate margins. These sedimentary wedges have complex tectonic and infill history and are not well understood because they are located mostly under water with little subaerial exposure. Most geological data is limited to marine seismic. Few commercial hydrocarbons are produced from these tectonic settings, even though they are located in the proximity of large giant oil and gas fields. Therefore these regions are underexplored for hydrocarbons and may hold large quantities of reserves. The aim of the PhD research project is, by compiling and analyzing surface and subsurface data along accretionary prisms worldwide (e.g. Barbados, northern Australian shelf,
Offshore Colombia, among others), to understand the different geologic processes that control their petroleum systems. Some specific geologic problems include: interaction between tectonics and sedimentation, source and reservoir rock distribution, preservation potential of hydrocarbon traps, etc. The project will develop from interpretation into classification schemes dependant on geologic processes that will have an impact on the understanding of the petroleum system and their economic importance for hydrocarbon exploration and production. *

Applicants must have a Master degree in a geosciences related field related to petroleum. Previous experience in seismic and well interpretation using computer software, structural restorations, stratigraphy, and plate tectonics is desirable, but not necessary.

Applicants must have earned a Master of Science/-Technology degree. It is necessary to have obtained an average grade of B or better in order to qualify. The appointee must be able to work independently and as a member of a team, be creative and innovative. The research fellow must have a good command of both oral and written English.

The selected candidate will be admitted to the PhD program at the University of Stavanger with an agreement to complete the PhD within the duration of the scholarship.

The program will mainly be carried out at the University of Stavanger, apart from a period of study abroad at a recognized and relevant centre of research.

The research fellow is salaried according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.515, code 1017, LR 20, ltr 45, of NOK 353 200 per annum.

The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favourable retirement benefits. Members may also apply for home investment loans at favourable interest rates.

Scholarship grantees may not travel on diplomatic or official passports. The costs of registration and visa renewal shall be borne by the scholarship grantees.

b) Travel to Mexico
If international air travel forms part of the scholarship benefits, the airline ticket will be arranged by the Directorate for Academic Exchange. The Mexican Embassy in the respective country shall notify grantees of the flight and ticket details. In the event international air travel is not included in the scholarship benefits, grantees must travel to Mexico at their own expense.
Before the trip to Mexico, grantees must be sure to have international medical insurance to cover their expenses in the event of illness, accident, or hospitalization for the first three months of their stay in Mexico, given that the IMSS medical insurance does not come into effect until the third month of the scholarship.

c) Arrival in Mexico
Upon arrival in Mexico City, scholarship grantees must report in person to the offices of the Directorate for Academic Exchange of the General Directorate for Academic and Cultural Cooperation located at: Plaza Juárez N°20, Piso 4 (Fourth Floor), Col. Centro, 06010, México, D.F. between 09:00 and 13:30 hours, Monday thru Friday, to complete the necessary formalities for their registration as SRE scholarship grantees. We recommend that you consult your scholarship grantee guide.

d) First Allowance Payment
The first allowance will be paid to scholarship grantees during the last days of the month in which the scholarship begins and in accordance with the annual calendar they will be given by their local Mexican Embassy before traveling to Mexico. Consequently, it is essential that grantees bring enough living expenses to last for at least the first 30 days. Scholarship grantees who fail to report to the DIA and be documented within the first ten days of the month in which the scholarship begins shall forfeit the first allowance payment.

e) Payment of Monthly Allowance
In the annual calendar schedule, the monthly-allowance payment day and the payroll-list signing dates are stipulated. Scholarship grantees accredited with institutions in the metropolitan area (Mexico City) must go to sign the corresponding payroll list at the offices of the Directorate for Academic Exchange. Scholarship grantees studying in the interior of the Republic must send – via e-mail – confirmation of receipt of their allowance payment. For said purpose and at the moment of being documented, they will be given a simple form prepared by the Directorate for Academic Exchange.

f) Intermediate Formalities
Scholarship grantees must familiarize themselves with the document entitled Rules Applicable to Foreign Grantees of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Scholarships, as well with the processes they must observe as grantees during their stay in this country so as not to omit any formality.

g) Final Formalities
Upon completion of their studies or research, scholarship grantees must hand in to the Directorate for Academic Exchange of the General Directorate for Academic and Cultural Cooperation a copy of the graduating-exam proof document, as well an electronic version of their thesis or final paper and a letter signed by the tutor confirming attainment of the objectives of the project. If applicable, they must also request the airline ticket for return to their home country and be informed of the departure date.
In the event of failing to comply with the foregoing requirements, the last monthly allowance payment and the airline ticket shall be cancelled, if applicable.

Obligations of Scholarship Grantees

These can be found in the document entitled Rules Applicable to Foreign Grantees of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Scholarships, which grantees must sign at the moment of receiving the scholarship award and thereby promise to abide by its provisions and respect its contents

Chiara” (http://www.unisi.it/santachiara/homeEn.html) sited in the historical centre of Siena.

The Graduate Program.

The goal of the program is to train professional economists. Former students hold positions as economists in the academia, in consulting businesses, and in national and internationals economic institutions, such as central banks and regulators.

The first two years of the Program are devoted to full-time courses. All of these are taught in English, the official language of the Program. After fundamental training in Mathematics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics, a full menu of specialized courses is offered. Students are exposed to different theoretical and methodological points of view, in order to be able to explore the
frontier of economics in an original way. Students are also required to participate in research activities, such as economics seminars and workshops. Admission to the second year is conditioned on the results of all first year final exams. Starting from the second year, students will develop their own research, under the supervision of a faculty member. While working at their dissertation, students are encouraged to undertake periods of research in foreign academic institutions. In this case the scholarship is increased by 50%. The doctorate is awarded after discussion of an original piece of scientific work (which can be written in Italian or in English). For further information about the Program, please visit http://www.econ-pol.unisi.it/dottorato/

Application process.

Applicants must hold, or obtain by September 30 2009, an Italian “laurea specialistica” or a “4-years laurea” or equivalent 4-5 years foreign degree. There are no limitations on the nationality of candidates. Prospective students are required to apply using the on-line procedure at the following website:
http://dottorati.unisi.it/domande/elenco_proposte_24_maggio.asp

The deadline for application is June 22, 2009. In addition to the on-line application, the following documentation is required (either in Italian of in English):

1. Curriculum vitae

2. Academic transcripts. These must contain a full list of courses taken and grades obtained.

3. Two letters of reference, in sealed envelopes. These must assess the student’s aptitudes towards research, competence, scientific potential and maturity, in comparative terms.

4. A research statement, not exceeding 1000 words.

5. (OPTIONAL) A short scientific essay, not longer than 5000 words, resulting from independent research by the candidate.

All required documentation must be sent by June 22, 2009 to the following address:

DOTTORATO IN ECONOMIA POLITICA

c/o Collegio Santa Chiara

Via Valdimontone n. 1

53100 Siena, Italy.

Selection of Students.

The selection of candidates will be based on an evaluation of their aptitude and competence to research. To this purpose, the examination commission might ask some of the candidates to sit for a written exam and an interview, to be held in Siena in the late-Spring or early-Summer of 2009; in this case, the candidates will be notified by email a couple of weeks before (however, the University cannot be held responsible for failed communications due to the candidate supplying late or incorrect information regarding his/her address). The exams will be in Italian or
in English. The University reserves the right to exclude from the selection process, at any time, candidates who do not meet the admission requirements.

CfP: Roma, Ashkali, Egyptians in former Yugoslavia, Giessen, 22-23.1.2010

Call for Paper: Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians in former Yugoslavia

The chair of Southeast European History at Justus-Liebig- University of Giessen and the Gießener Zentrum Östliches Europa (GIZO) invite to a conference in Giessen, Germany.

In addition to established researchers, we would also like to encourage both newcomers and doctoral students to participate.

Date: 22nd and 23rd January 2010
Location: Justus-Liebig- University Giessen, Germany.

Since the 1990ies, a growing concern in both the media and academia emerged regarding the situation of Roma in Eastern Europe due to the fact that they became, in countries in transition, a target and victim of nationalism resulting in the worsening of the groups living conditions, especially in comparison with the majority society. This is also the case in former Yugoslavia, specifically after the wars of the Nineties. Since 1999, if one mentions Roma in Kosovo but also in Serbia
and Macedonia, Ashkali and Egyptians has to be added for reasons of specification. All three groups are referred to as Gypsies by the majority society and were expelled from Kosovo in 1999 and 2004. Using one abbreviation RAE, for three groups: Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians - is quite confusing for scholars, politicians and the international community alike and unique when compared with other minorities in former Yugoslavia.

Not only in Kosovo but also in the neighbouring countries such as Serbia, Macedonia and Albania, members of all three communities are living as refugees from Kosovo or citizens of the country. As yet, only few scholars have discussed the issue of the nation building of Egyptians and the dilemma they are facing in a society predominantly Albanian, Serbian or Macedonian.

This conference aims at discussing PhD projects regarding the history and anthropology of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians in former Yugoslavia and Albania, focusing on nation-building and the representation of RAE, the construction of identities, majorities and minorities in the said countries, the impact of nationalism on minorities, social and political reasons for switching of identities, the impact of Science on minorities and identities, topoi of origin and history, and, finally, the historiography and related topics.

The presentations should be held in English and last 20-30 minutes. Please hand in an abstract of 300-500 words by 1st August 2009. Travel expenses and accommodation will be reimbursed.

Postdoc and PhD student positions in Bioinformatics, Metageno

The Raes lab (VIB, University of Brussels (VUB), Belgium) is hiring 3 motivated postdocs / PhD students in the computational analysis of metagenomics data, with a particular emphasis on human-associated microbial communities in health and disease.

The last few years have seen a revolution in the functional and phylogenetic profiling of complete microbial communities through (next-generation) environmental shotgun sequencing (metagenomics). Recently, these approaches are being used to study the combined genetic material of microbial communities that live on and in the human body (the human microbiome), with important clinical applications in autoimmune disorders, infection and nutrition-related pathologies.

The proposed research projects focus on bioinformatics tool development for comparative metagenomics of next-generation sequencing data (Raes et al. Curr Opin Microbiol 2007) as well as further development and/or application of multivariate analysis methods (Gianoulis, Raes et al PNAS 2008) towards clinical ecosystems
biology of the human ecosystem (Raes and Bork Nat Rev Microbiol 2008). Methods
are applied to public data, within the framework of existing collaborations (e.g. the MetaHIT consortium http://www.metahit.eu), and on sequencing projects initiated within the lab. VIB is an exciting, interdisciplinary research institute with excellent facilities (e.g. proteomics,
next-gen sequencing) and research groups in e.g. immunology, microbiology, genetics,
molecular and cellular biology and translational research.

The Raes lab is located on the campus of the University of Brussels, a vibrant, international city in the hart of Europe.

PhD position at LIRMM, Université Montpellier, France

PhD position available at LIRMM, Université Montpellier, France
Title : Prolonged Functional Balanced Standing in paraplegic patient

The standing posture in paraplegic patient can be obtained by knee joint locking. Different approaches are possible: verticalizing wheelchairs, orthosis, Vanini boots, functional electrical stimulation (FES).

Orthoses and Vanini boots allow to lock the knee and the ankles and in some cases to free one or two hand. A visual feedback is necessary for the patient to ensure his vertical alignment.

Electrical stimulation is interesting as it would allow to have in a longer term a completely implanted version of the system and therefore largely more acceptable by the patient. The electrical stimulation of biceps femori allows to lock knee joint but involves high current intensity levels which fatigue quickly the muscles and lead to early joint unlocking. conduisent trop rapidement à un déverrouillage de l’articulation. We propose here to explore orthoses, Vanini boots and FES solutions and combine them if necessary to achieve long term functional balanced standing (allowing to free one hand to grasp an object).

More precisely, we will study :
1) Knee locking under surface FES
Several strategies will be considered : 1) moving from continuous stimulation to intermittent one , 2) alterning stimulation on the two sides, 3) optimizing stimulation patterns (frequency, amplitude, …), 4) involving frontal plane movements (lateral oscillations) and stimulating other muscles. (lateral oscillations controlled by verticality of the trunk), 5) bifocal stimulation of thigh muscles, 6) matrix stimulation to modify the localization of stimulation point.

2) Balance control
We will propose strategies to ensure balance by combining different solutions (orthoses, Vanini boots, FES)
Keywords:
- musculo-skeletal modelling
- involvement in clinical experiments
- analysis of experimental data

This PhD thesis will be co-supervised by PhD Christine AZEVEDO, PhD David GUIRAUD, MD PhD Charles Fattal (PROPARA) and Pr. P. Fraisse.
