*STANFORD UNIVERSITY POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP:
CULTURES OF NATURE IN THE AMERICAN WEST*

Application Deadline: *April 1, 2010*

The Environmental Humanities Project, in collaboration with the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford University, seeks applicants for a postdoctoral fellowship focusing on cultures of nature in the American West. Applicants' research should focus on how cultures shape conceptions of nature, the natural, species boundaries, uses of plants and animals and natural resources, the human body in its environmental dimensions, or environmental health and illness; how cultures of nature form and dissolve; how cultures map nature, literally and metaphorically; how cultures of nature rooted in particular places develop dimensions beyond that place (e.g. in the virtual realm); and what practical differences such cultures make for human uses of the environment and in shaping nature.

The postdoctoral fellow will be a leader in the Environmental Humanities Project, a new initiative at Stanford designed to develop an interdisciplinary community across departments, programs and research areas in the Humanities involving environmental issues.

This community will also seek to build bridges to the social and natural sciences.

Fellows should be committed to this goal and will be expected to participate actively in building such a community. In addition, they will teach one class and participate in workshops and seminars. The appointment is for one year but may be renewed for an additional year. Applicants must have their doctoral degree in hand 30 days prior to the appointment start date.

The concept of "cultures of nature" is conceived broadly to include indigenous, ethnic, class-based, local, professional formations and subcultures. The American West is understood as the United States west of the Mississippi, western Canada, Mexico, and their interfaces with the Pacific region. We welcome applicants from anthropology, history, literary and cultural studies, political science, sociology and urban studies, as well as candidates from the natural sciences with a strong
interest in multidisciplinary methods and the humanities. We particularly encourage applicants who are interested in working with a variety of sources, including data, maps, images, and multimedia visualization techniques. Applicants should be comfortable working in a collaborative research setting. The fellowship research project will be developed by the candidate in collaboration with scholars from a variety of related disciplines, and will have an associated public outreach dimension.

For further information please contact Ursula K. Heise, uheise@stanford. edu, Professor of English, Director of the Program in Modern Thought and Literature and faculty coordinator of the Environmental Humanities Project, or Jon Christensen
jonchristensen@ stanford. edu, Executive Director, Bill Lane Center for the American West, Stanford University

CfP: National Bodies in Eastern Europe, Wellington/New Zealand

Call for Papers:
National Bodies in Eastern Europe

Conference to be held 28-29 August 2010 in Wellington, New Zealand

Several scholars have explained the rise of nationalism as the consequence of "modernization, " variously understood as some combination of secularization, industrialization, rising literacy, increasing technological sophistication, and similar factors. National ideologies transformed political life, as they seized European imaginations, but also affected how people viewed each other in everyday circumstances. The experience of life in Eastern Europe, a region where the impact of
nationalism proved particularly explosive, has included the experience of being stereotyped and classified in terms of nationalist fantasy.

We wish to explore the spread of nationalized thinking as it relates to the body. How did people in central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans classify each other in terms of national concepts? What characteristics supposedly distinguished the Czech from the German, the Jew from the Ukrainian, the Romanian from the Hungarian, the Turk from the Greek, and so forth? How did these fantasies of the national body emerge, and how did they affect human interactions? Other topics of possible
interest include: national bodily practices, literary concepts of national bodies, national sexuality or sexualities, national clothing or accoutrements, sporting nationalism, or eugenics.

We are initially soliciting papers for a conference hosted by the Antipodean East European Study Group at Victoria University and the Russian Programme at the University of Canterbury. The conference will take place on the weekend of 28-29 August in Wellington, New Zealand. We welcome scholars working in history, anthropology, sociology, literary studies, film studies, and other related disciplines. The conference organizers then intend to publish selected papers either as an edited volume, or a special edition of a relevant journal. Final word lengths are flexible at this stage, but we suggest contributors aim for 6,000 words.

Interested parties contact Alexander Maxwell

CfP: Between Big Brother and the Digital Utopia: e-Governance in,Post-Totalitarian Space

Digital Icons: Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New

Media's third issue invites submissions
on all aspects of new media use in the region, as well as submissions on the topic of e-governance that will form the cluster of the issue.

Between Big Brother and the Digital Utopia: e-Governance in Post-Totalitarian Space

Deadline: May 1, 2010

The use of information and communications technology to overcome traditional difficulties associated with the interaction of the state and its citizens represents a double-edged sword in post-totalitarian space. For many, the coming of digitised governance heralds an end to needless bureaucracy, countless hours wasted in queues, and access to hitherto unavailable government services. For others, however, the
expansion of the state into the virtual realm is a harbinger of a dystopian future where the panopticon is always watching, and even the most private thoughts of citizens are monitored and recorded by the state. This issue of Digital Icons aims to examine the inherent tension between these two extremes.

We are interest in research exploring the evolution and impact of e-governance in the Russian Federation and other post-Soviet states; however, we also invite submissions on digitised government in post-Communist Central Europe (Poland, Bulgaria, etc.), as well as comparative essays on other countries (particularly the People's Republic of China) that include analysis of states within the former Soviet bloc. While articles on e-governance will form a thematic cluster in this issue, submissions on other topics are encouraged, too.

This message serves as a call for submissions - the deadline for which is May 1, 2010. For more information, including a more extensive thematic outline, guidelines and contact information, please visit the CfP link on our website, or contact the RC team.

Best regards,

The editors

Sudha Rajagopalan (Utrecht)
Ellen Rutten (Bergen/Amsterdam)

PhD. Vacancy - Industrial Quality Monitoring based on Statistical Process Control Techniques

Description:
Statistical Process Control (SPC) is a widely used framework for monitoring industrial processes. Within SPC, control charts are a powerful tool to detect deviations from normal operation, although they are mainly fit to processes with a fixed target. Such fixed target, however, is not present in numerous applications and the proposed research will focus on such nonstationary processes. Examples are ubiquitous and include production processes in the agro-food sector but also within the framework of monitoring industrial equipment that is subject to degradation.
Part of the research fits in the framework of an interdisciplinary research project entitled "Prognostics for Optimal Maintenance (POM)".

It is coordinated by the Flanders Mechatronics Technology Centre (FMTC). The goal of the project is toprovide the tools needed to improve the way maintenance of industrial machinery is done. Today maintenance is regarded as a necessary burden to keep the machines running. However, companies agree that it would be much better if they could step down from this image and innovate the way machines and maintenance are sold. The POM consortium will leverage on the experience the industry has gained in order to solve a complex optimization problem: how to provide a better maintenance of industrial machines at a lower total cost of ownership. POM will develop tools and methodologies that will help machine builders to reduce the costs and market the whole assemble of machine plus maintenance.

Our team is mainly involved in developing Statistical Process Monitoring algorithms to detect anomalies during machine operation. Those anomalies then serve as input for lifetime prediction models developed by our partners.

Keywords: Statistical Process Control (SPC), nonstationary processes, degradation
Profile: The candidate should preferably hold a degree in Statistics, Bioscience Engineering, Engineering or Physics. Interested? Please send your CV and motivation letter to bart.deketelaere@ biw.kuleuven. be. We will contact you soon!

Ph.D. position @ University of Antwerp

At the University of Antwerp (Belgium), there is a vacant position for a pre-doctoral researcher at the Department of Environment, Technology and Technology Management in the Faculty of Applied Economics. The ideal candidate has a good background in statistics and mathematics, including good programming skills and a good command of the English language.

The position is meant to conduct research on the algorithmic construction of optimal designs of experiments. The work, which involves the implementation of operational research ideas in optimal experimental design, will be carried out in close collaboration with Peter Goos and Kenneth Sörensen. The candidate is expected to enroll the university's Ph.D. program and to obtain a Ph.D. at the end of the project. A short project description can be found below.

We offer a three-and-a- half to four-year position (with annual evaluation), a net monthly grant of about 1700 euro, and a stimulating working environment in a lively cosmopolitan city.

For more information, please contact peter.goos@ua. ac.be

Short project description:

Innovation and quality improvement are crucial for businesses and industries in today's world of global competition: only innovative, top-quality products and process technology can provide companies with a strategic competitive advantage and guarantee a leading technological position. The purpose of this project is to develop a framework for supporting product and process innovation through designed experimentation that guarantees a reduced time-to-market, enhanced customer satisfaction, increased market share and acceptably low cost of production. The framework will also be useful for the improvement of existing products, processes and services.

Many sorts of businesses experience similar problems in the early stages of a product's or process's life cycle. Sooner or later, they are confronted with the need to investigate the impact of several parameters on products, processes and consumers. More often than not, their studies must be carried out under an enormous time pressure so as to keep the time-to-market limited and maintain or acquire first-mover advantages if possible. This calls for a coherent generic scientifically- sound time-and cost-efficient approach to product and process innovation.

Optimal design of experiments is such an approach. However, the construction of optimal experimental designs involves solving complex combinatorial optimization problems. This interdisciplinary research project is intended to implement state-of-the- art methodology for single- and multi-objective optimization from operational research (where, for instance, vehicle routing problems, assignment problems and project planning problems are studied) in optimal design of experiments.

PhD position Phytoplankton Ecology

Within the EU-funded project FORCE (Future Of Reefs in a Changing Environment) , the research group Aquatic Microbiology of the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics (IBED) of the University of Amsterdam has a vacancy for a:

PhD student in Phytoplankton Ecology

1.0 FTE (38hrs per week), 4 years

vacancy number 10-1000

The FORCE project aims to understand the ultimate and proximate causes of change in Caribbean coral reef ecosystems. Eutrophication through runoff of terrestrial nutrients into coastal waters may cause a shift from coral dominance to macroalgae. However, the role of phytoplankton in absorbing nutrients has largely been under-appreciated. Phytoplankton often responds rapidly to changes in nutrient availability and may utilise much of the terrestrial nutrients, rendering them unavailable to corals and macroalgae. To date, nutrient thresholds indicating problematic levels of eutrophication of coral reefs have been proposed, but their relevance is questionable. Our study will investigate how the nutrient influx is allocated over phytoplankton, macroalgae and corals to obtain a better understanding of the impacts of eutrophication on coral reefs.

Fieldwork will consist of water sampling, chemical and biological analyses, underwater surveys, and aquarium experiments. The fieldwork (18-24 months) will be primarily conducted at the Carmabi Institute on Cura€ ¦çao, Netherlands Antilles, and at some other Caribbean locations. Preparation for field work, laboratory and statistical analyses, and writing of manuscripts will be done at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Requirements

The successful candidate has: an MSc in marine biology, aquatic ecology, or related biological field; experience with fieldwork; experience in (scientific) teamwork; proven writing ability in English; preference will be given to applicants who have experience with the ecology of phytoplankton, or macroalgae, or coral reefs; a valid driver's license and open water SCUBA certificate.
