CESUN 2010
Central European Summer University, Pécs, Hungary
16 – 25 July 2010

“City Regions in the Southern Cultural Zone”
Faculty of Humanities, University of Pécs

Introduction

The CESUN 2010 will take place between 16 and 25 July 2010 – according to the
experience of the past years – which could mean the starting point of a long‐term
regional and international co‐operation and contribute to the process of international
regional development potentially launched by the European Capital of Culture Programme of Pécs. The project is based upon the experience, traditions, knowledgebases, the already existing international relations of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pécs and the numerous experts of our city, but the cultural and sociological changes are planned to be examined and discussed with unconventional and new ways based on the young generations. Our summer university connects different fields of science, therefore, it is intended to be truly interdisciplinary.

Programme
The CESUN 2010 is an international summer university for university (undergrad and
postgrad), Ph.D. students and young researchers, coupled with a photo exhibition. The
event is planned for 60 participants, partly for the students of our faculty, partly for students of other Hungarian higher education institutions.

The programme is focused on social sciences, therefore, we expect students from social science disciplines. Lecturers will come from different countries ranging from Hungary to the USA.

The central objective is to analyse the concept of the “city‐region”. According to this concept, we will take a close look at the mainstream theories, among others the
differences between the local and regional social structures (in ideological, political, judiciary and economic aspects) to see their hidden trends and processes, to declare new symbolic spaces connected with the city and the changes of the local–regional policy – all under the aegis of the natural cultural fluctuation connected to the European Capital of Culture Programme (ECoC). Consequently, the process of cultural fluctuation (change) is standing in the focus of the summer university from the point of view of the potentially generated and expected changes in the regional and international context.

The current researches and scientific outcomes provide a great base for the event, presenters of former ECoC cities with plenty and illustrious observations will help
gather a better understanding of the core issues.

A proceedings volume is also planned to be published as a selection of the best
presentations from the summer university together with the resume of the discussions
about Pécs and the Capital of Culture Programme. It will be published as an e‐book over the Internet in co‐operation with Publikon Publishers at the www.publikon.hu website. In line with the topic of the school we are planning to organise a photo exhibition with
over 40 photos. An arts jury will rank the best proposals after a call for university
students is published in early January 2010. The subject of the photos: How are CITIES in the process of CHANGE? The works later on could be transported to different ECoC (partner) cities.

Methodology

A modular methodology will be implemented, which strengthens group work via certain
interactive elements. The idea is to ensure lively discussions and some common
conclusions and propositions which could be useful for the future in terms of any “cityregion”.

The mixture of plenary sessions, workshops and group work will mean different ways to
elaborate on the core issues. In addition, the above‐mentioned exhibition and some
other cultural events will also be part of the project.

Implementation

A number of partners will help organise the event. The main co‐organisers are the
Society for the Science of History in Pécs (a cultural NGO) and the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Pécs. The organisers count on the Students’ Union of the faculty, as well as many international partners from Osijek, Croatia, Vienna, Austria and the US.

Monitoring, assessment

We would like to measure the students’ satisfaction using questionnaires. At the website of the summer university we will set up a virtual forum to make observations to help our work for the future. As long as it is expected that during the discussions new ideas will show up, we will keep records of the potential next projects to realise the multiplier effect of the summer university.

Expected outcome

Students from abroad and Hungary will have the opportunity to see the City of Pécs and its region; they will experience the city’s cultural diversity, rich heritage and innovative strengths during both the professional and cultural programmes. The course provides possibility for the participants to define and exchange their own experiences. The event is truly a great occasion to:
- meetup and mingle within an international and intercultural student community
in one of Central Europe’s oldest universities,
- learn about Central‐European issues and understand the ongoing changes and
transformations of city‐regions,
- learn Hungarian language,
- master communication and intercultural learning skills,
- build personal and official relations and work out joint projects for the future.
Combine CESUN2010 with ICWiP2010!

There is a great chance for those interested to combine participation in CESUN2010 with taking part in the one of the region’s leading student festival, the pillar programme of Pécs2010, the International Culture Week in Pécs (ICWiP) 2010! Those who would like to extend their stay in Pécs, European Capital of Culture 2010, are encouraged to apply also for ICWiP2010 under the motto “Balkans: Re‐loaded”. Discounted rates can be asked for if you combine the two events. Don’t miss the festival of your summer! Visit: www.icwip.hu

CfA: European Parliament Programme for persons with disabilities

The European Parliament promotes equality of opportunity and encourages applications from women and men with disabilities for its traineeship programmes. In 2006, as a positive action measure, the European Parliament launched a specific traineeship programme for people with disabilities.

Paid Traineeships for people with disabilities. The European Parliament is offering paid traineeships to persons with disabilities, as a positive action measure aimed at
facilitating the integration of disabled people in the workplace. These traineeships are open both to graduates of universities or equivalent institutions and to people whose qualifications are below university level. (Article 18 of the Internal Rules Governing Traineeships and Study Visits in the Secretariat of the European Parliament which concerns the academic qualifications needed for admission to a paid traineeship thus does not apply to this programme). The main purpose of this programme is to offer a number of people with disabilities a meaningful and valuable work experience, and an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the activities of the European Parliament.

Paid traineeships are awarded for a period of five months which cannot be extended. Please note that traineeships do not give trainees the right to future employment in the European Parliament: officials are recruited on the basis of competitions organised by EPSO; contract staff is employed on the basis of the calls for expression of interest published by EPSO.

PhD student working on Behavioral Service Substitution (BOSS)

The position is for 4 years and funded by NWO.

Service-orientation aims at composing complex systems from simpler systems, called services. One fundamental problem is to decide when a service can be substituted by another service. In this project, we approach this problem by combining theoretical research and applicability in industrial settings. To this end, we investigate a theoretical foundation of service substitution at the level of service models. Among others, we develop algorithms to decide service substitution and to construct substitutable services. We implement and integrate the theoretical results into service technology tools available at http://service-technology.org/tools and embed it in other tools such as ProM and BPM/SOA platforms.

The project will be conducted in the AIS group under the supervision of prof.dr. Wil van der Aalst and dr. Christian Stahl. The AIS group is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The department provides undergraduate and MSc programs in Industrial and Applied Mathematics and in Computer Science. The Department has research collaborations with other Departments at the Technische
Universiteit Eindhoven as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both at home and abroad. The Department has approximately 350 employees and more than 700 students.

The AIS group is doing research in the area of process modeling and analysis. The group is rated as one of the leading computer science groups in the Netherlands and TU/e often seen as the epicenter of BPM research. The group uses formal methods such as Petri nets to design, analyze, and implement dynamic systems. The group is well-versed in workflow management, process mining, and process verification. See www.workflowpatterns.com, www.workflowcourse.com, www.processmining.org,
www.yawl-system.com, www.win.tue.nl/ais/, www.wvdaalst.com, and
www.tue.nl for more information.

In the project we collaborate with Humboldt-Universitä t zu Berlin and Universität Rostock in the context of the B.E.S.T. (Berlin-Rostock- Eindhoven Service Technology) Program (https://www2.informatik.hu-berlin.de/top/best/).

Requirements:

We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:
- a solid background in Computer Science and interested in systems for process support (demonstrated by a relevant Master);
- knowledge of process modeling and of formal methods (i.e., at least one of the fields automata theory, process algebra, formal verification, or Petri nets);
- programming skills in C/C++/Java
- candidates from non-Dutch or non-English speaking countries should be prepared to prove their English language skills;
- good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing.

We are looking for candidates who really want to make a difference and like to do theoretical research, on the one hand, and to implement these results such that they can be applied to industrial services, on the other hand.

Appointment and salary:

See http://w3.tue.nl/en/services/dpo/conditions_of_employment/formal_conditions_of_employment/ for more information on working at TU/e, salary, etc.

Application:
Interested candidates are requested to send an application by e-mail to Ine van der Ligt (e-mail: wsinfsys@tue. nl) with the subject field "BOSS Vacancy AIS".

The application should consist of the following parts:
- motivational letter;
- a curriculum vitae;
- copies of diplomas;
- proof of English language skills (if applicable).

Applications should be received by April 15th.

CfP: Ethical Food Movements in Postsocialist Settings, London, 17-18.02.2011

*Ethical Food Movements in Postsocialist Settings*

*Workshop hosted by the SOAS Food Studies Centre, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London, United Kingdom, February 17-18, 2011*

*Organizers: Dr. Jakob Klein (SOAS) and Dr. Yuson Jung (Harvard)*

*Call for Papers*

In recent years, anthropologists, geographers, and food studies scholars have paid close attention to the rapid development of organics, fair trade, Slow Food and other food movements, which have offered ethically motivated critiques of, and alternatives to, what their advocates perceive to be a dominant, profit-driven, and environmentally destructive and socially inequitable global agri-food system. One strand of scholarship on what have collectively been termed “ethical food movements” has examined the philosophies, values, and histories animating the practices of activists, producers, and consumers engaged in these movements. Another has explored
the contradictions inherent in movements, which have critiqued global commodity markets while remaining firmly embedded within them. For example, studies have demonstrated the gap between the consumer-oriented rhetoric of organics and fair trade on the one hand and actual production practices on the other. Others have noted the tendency for ethical food movements to become appropriated by middle-class consumers and large agri-food corporations. A key debate engaging food scholars and activists has centered on the ability of such movements to provide effectual alternatives to the dominant food system, given these tendencies toward elitism and
“conventionalization.” Another criticism has related issues of power inequality to governance in the global food systems, and has raised questions about the normalization of a particular set of ethical standards that are culturally meaningful (mostly) to Western consumers.

Despite the expansion of international food trade and trade regimes and the
proliferation of ethical food movements across the globe, thus far the research on these movements has tended to focus on the West. In this workshop, we seek to redress this imbalance by bringing together studies of ethical food movements in the postsocialist world, in which we include not only those states in Eastern Europe, Africa and elsewhere, which are no longer ruled by communist parties, but also the “actually existing” socialist countries such as China, Vietnam, and Cuba, which have introduced various pro-market policies. Across the postsocialist world, ethical foods
have emerged in a variety of forms and contexts, ranging from popular demands for “natural foods” in response to industrialized and globalized food supply chains, to organized social movements seeking to “reconnect” urban consumers with rural producers, to state-led development initiatives involving agricultural exports to “ethical” consumers abroad.

Under state socialism, the state attempted to organize and regulate the production, distribution, and even consumption of food. In fact, the distribution of food was used as a mechanism of social control and moral education. Meanwhile, the state was itself judged by citizens on the quality and quantity of foods provided through the socialist food system. Often found to be wanting, the centralized food systems also gave rise to underground economies and informal exchange networks, sometimes linked to organized resistance. The pivotal role played by food in the political projects of, and reactions to, state socialism continues to inform both the expectations and moral values of citizens and the practices of the state during the contemporary period of postsocialism and neo-liberal reform. In particular, the sense of deception many postsocialist citizens experienced in the emerging consumer society through the influx of global commodities provides an interesting vantage point to examine cross-cultural practices of ethical consumption. Thus, while in many cases inspired or even driven by ethical food movements in the advanced capitalist economies, the practices,
discourses and meanings of these movements in postsocialist countries have been profoundly shaped by the experiences and legacies of state socialism.

At the same time, however, the massive political, economic, social and cultural differences within the postsocialist world must not be overlooked. This workshop entails a comparative study, which will bring out both commonalities and differences in ethical food movements under postsocialism. In doing so, the workshop will offer new and challenging perspectives on ethical food movements and their roles within larger, globalized agri-food systems. Further, the project will build on the existing literature on postsocialism to provide original insights into the changing relationship between state, market, moral projects, and everyday life in the
postsocialist world. Contributors to the project will explore discourses and practices surrounding the production, distribution, and consumption of various ethical foods, in relation to themes including, but not limited to:

• the changing relationship between state and market in postsocialist food systems

• certification, regulation and standardization (e.g. food labeling)

• globalization of food trade and regulatory regimes

• food safety, health, and risk

• environmental degradation and environmentalism

• food security

• social differentiation

• social trust and changing moral landscapes

• development discourse and practice

• civil society and social movements

• religious movements

• social memory and nostalgia

*The workshop*

A two-day workshop will be held on 17th and 18th February 2011 at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, United Kingdom, and will be hosted by the SOAS Food Studies Centre.

There will be twelve paper-presenters. Full-length papers will be circulated in advance to all participants. The talks will be divided into six 90-minute panels with two papers in each. Presenters will each speak for 15 minutes, with another 60 minutes of discussion per panel. The panel sessions will be open to the public. A concluding, roundtable discussion will be open to presenters and discussants only.

The workshop will lead to a collection of essays to be co-edited by the organizers. The volume will include up to twelve substantive chapters based on papers presented at the workshop. We aim to publish the volume before the end of 2012. We are currently in the process of applying for grants to fund the workshop. If successful, all participants will be reimbursed for travel expenses and provided with accommodation in London.

If you are interested in participating in the workshop, please send a title, 500-word abstract and C.V. to Jakob Klein (*jk2@soas.ac. uk*) and Yuson Jung (*yusonjung@post. harvard.edu*) by *April 12. 2010*.
