10 PhD Fellowships in Earth Science, GEOSIM, Germany

The graduate research school GEOSIM (Explorative Simulation in Earth-Sciences) is a collaborative effort of researchers in departments of Earth and Mathematical Sciences at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ Potsdam), Potsdam University and Freie Universität Berlin.

We invite applications for

10 PhD fellowships

in the field of simulation of Earth System processes.

GEOSIM focuses on research in three critical fields of Earth Sciences by using simulation as an explorative tool dedicated to advancing our qualitative and quantitative understanding of Earth's complex systems. These fields will be: solid earth dynamics and earthquakes, atmosphere-hydrosph ere dynamics and climate, and hydrological flow and transport processes. The fields will be studied by integrating techniques such as data exploration, assimilation, and model selection and validation; analysis of scaling properties of geo-processes; explorative simulation and computer-aided modelling of incompletely known systems. We aim to train a new generation of young, interdisciplinary scientists with skills in combining applied geosciences with the development of physical concepts of Earth systems, mathematical abstraction, and the use of high-performance computing.

What we offer:

Training will include advanced courses in the above subjects, summer schools, and workshops complementing the research work in the topic of the PhD thesis. Candidates will be co-supervised by an earth scientist and a mathematician and will benefit from a stimulating interdisciplinary research environment. The three-year PhD fellowships amount 1500 euro/month.

What we ask:

We expect candidates to contribute to the development of their own research topic and to participate in the school's curriculum. At the time of appointment, candidates should have a MSc degree (or equivalent) in at least one of the following fields and a strong affinity with a complementary discipline: Earth Sciences, Physics, Meteorological Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Sciences or Engineering.

The website www.geo-x.net/ geosim provides more information on the groups and scientists involved in thesis supervision, candidate requirements, subjects for potential PhD theses and the PhD curriculum, as well as contact details and the online application form.

Candidate evaluation will begin after the application deadline on May 25th, 2011; the anticipated start of the PhD projects is on October 1, 2011. GFZ, Potsdam University and Freie Universität Berlin are equal opportunity / affirmative action employers.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoretical Biology

Ref: PERM 2011/93
The Faculty of Science at University of Gothenburg announces a fixed-term employment as:
Postdoctoral Fellow in Theoretical Biology

at the Department of Physics or the Department of Marine Ecology. Several research groups in Gothenburg address basic evolutionary questions, empirically and mathematically. We have formed a Centre for Theoretical Biology (CTBio) established by the Faculty of Science (University of Gothenburg) in November 2006. The centre brings empirical biologists, mathematicians, and
theoretical physicists together. Its goal is to stimulate interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific quality in theoretical biology.

Responsibilities
The appointee is supposed to conduct research independently, and to actively participate in ongoing projects developing coalescent models for meta-populations of a marine invertebrate species, Littorina saxatilis. This species is a widely used model for evolutionary studies and comprehensive background data is available (evolutionary ecology, behavior, population
genetics and intraspecific phylogeny). The project involves intense collaborations, not only with theoreticians, but also with evolutionary biologists.

Qualification requirements
To qualify as a postdoctoral fellow you must have completed a PhD in a relevant subject area or you must have a foreign degree corresponding to a PhD in a relevant subject area. Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the final date of application. Candidates being awarded their degree earlier than this can also be
preferred if specific reasons exist. Such specific reasons may be a leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Assessment
The applicant should have documented familiarity with stochastic models (such as for example branching or coalescent processes) and their computer simulation. A fundamental interest in biological questions is meriting.

USA: Southern Oregon University International Cultural Services Program Up to $9000 in Grants

The Southern Oregon University (SOU) International Cultural Services Program (ICSP) provides approximately 20 international undergraduate and graduate students with grants of about $9000 USD per academic year ($3,000 USD per term) toward tuition at SOU. Partial grants are sometimes awarded. Once accepted to this competitive program, students who perform satisfactorily are normally able to continue with ICSP support until they complete their program at SOU.

A unique factor of this grant is "cultural service". Students participating in the program devote some 3 hours per week (80 hours per academic year) to volunteer service, usually consisting of making presentations about their countries and cultures in local schools.

In order to qualify, please note that:

- The full range of criteria that one would expect will be considered, including academic excellence as demonstrated by grades and other achievement (minimum GPA is 2.75 for undergraduate and 3.0 for graduate students), the student's own written application, an interview when possible, and letters of recommendation. Demonstration of financial need is also taken into consideration.
- For ICSP grants, those selected must also have excellent and clear spoken English and the ability to represent their country effectively in public. For both programs, we also strive to achieve some geographical balance in participation.

Company sponsored PhD Program, Renault, France

Scholarship Summary: A Company sponsored PhD Program in Renault, France is available in the DELTA department. The thesis CIFRE is sponsored by Renault.

Proposal for PhD CIFRE Renault
The Department of Electronics and Automotive Advanced Technology (DELTA), Renault offers CIFRE entitled "Study of electrical insulation systems used in motor vehicles Electrical taking into account their specific environment, to ensure the desired life of the electric motor for future generation.

Background:
The current level of tension and its probable increase in the near future, the use of devices power electronics and the specific constraints they generate (as a voltage, steep edges, high frequencies, etc..), not to mention the operating conditions specific to the application (profiles mission thermal cycles, vibratory stress, etc) make the study of Electrical Insulation System (SIE) motors for electric vehicles (VE) a new field of investigation. Indeed, to ensure the duration Life sought, it is vital to understand the mechanisms of degradation of the dielectric insulation of cables, motor winding and power components. Among the risks, we must consider include:
- Breakdown between turns (same phase or different phases) and turns-frame;
- Failure of impedance of distribution lines accompanied by a sharp surge in response to reflections of Electromagnetic wave;
- Non-negligible parasitic capacitances and forehead steep causing a power surge at the entrance of the winding and intense use of the electrical insulation;
- Inhomogeneous distribution of tension in the coil.

Problem:
The whole question is at what level of exposure to risk of failure is the application. By this I mean, the voltage level is it - given a few peculiar "Inverter - can trigger mechanisms of insulation breakdown, discharge partial (DP) and corona discharge? The answer to that question the whole strategy of choice and design of electrical systems that will be used. As part of this work, we try to answer this question. She will consider innovative methods of detecting these phenomena, developed in a different context (aerospace, defense, rail) and seem particularly interesting (radio frequency detection). After studies at the Laboratory, will seek to deploy detection methods on an engine test bench consists of a Renault engine and its electronic
power.

Diploma: Engineer and / or bac + 5 Master 2 research

Preferred areas of expertise: Physics of plasmas, electromagnetism, electrical engineering, signal processing, electronics.
