PhD and Master Scholarship at Washington University in St. Louis

Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) offers scholarship through the McDonnell International Scholars Academy program. This scholarship is partnership based and it is open for Indonesian citizens who are graduates of University of Indonesia.

Admission is open until February 1, 2012.

For the 2012-13 academic year, Scholars will receive:

1. full tuition for study in a graduate or professional degree program. This support will continue as long as the Scholar is making satisfactory progress toward a degree.
2. a 12-month living stipend for each year that the Scholar is making satisfactory progress toward a degree. This stipend is set at $26,000 for the year beginning August 16, 2012.
3. a one-time travel allowance of up to $1,500 for travel to St. Louis for a period of study as an Academy Scholar.
4. an annual travel allowance of up to $2,000 for a trip to the Scholar's alma mater.

PhD scholarship available at QUT’s BPM Group

Applications are invited from suitable qualified graduates for four PhD scholarships at the
Business Process Management Group, Information Systems Discipline at Queensland University of Technology as part of the ARC project “Designing Process Models for Decision-Making”. The term of the scholarship is three years. The scholarships provide financial support towards study and living costs.

Project Background
When seeking to re-design business processes – a perennial top priority of chief information executives – organisations use graphical documentations of their business processes, so called process models. These models act as blueprints of organizational processes, and are a key tool for making re-design decisions, i.e., decisions about where, how and why changes to the processes should be enacted to warrant increased revenues, business growth, improved operational efficiency, cost reductions or increased compliance.

A process model that documents a business process in an incomplete, incorrect, cumbersome to decipher, or otherwise deficient manner will not convey the information about the business domain to the decision maker such that a good decision can be facilitated. Any re-design of the processes, in consequence, will then fail to deliver the expected benefits. When creating process models, therefore, business analysts require principles that guide them in conceiving graphical representations of business processes that are useful, intuitive and accurate to the
decision-makers (process owners, process managers, business analysts, systems designers and the like) working with these models.

This project aims to develop a theory, and theory-driven guidelines, for developing
understandable process models. Specifically, it will deliver:
• A fundamental theory about factors and consequences of process modelling for decision-making tasks; and
• on the basis of the new and validated theory, practical guidelines based on rigorous empirical insights to guide the creation of useful, intuitive and accurate process models for decision-making.

Project Governance
The research project is led by Associate Professor Jan Recker, PhD. Jan is Alexandervon-Humboldt Fellow and Associate Professor for Information Systems at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, where he is co-leader of the Business Process Management research group. His main areas of research include business process design in organizational practice, user acceptance and IT-enabled business transformations. His research is published in the MIS Quarterly, the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, the European Journal of Information Systems, Information & Management, the Scandinavian Journal of Information
Systems, Information Systems, and other key journals.

Jan is currently the highest ranked researcher in Information Systems in Europe and Australia, based on publications in the top six journals over the last three years. He is an Associate Editor for the Communications of the AIS, a member of the editorial board of several international journals and serves on the program committee of various conferences.

Twenty PhD Positions are available in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded project on pro-poor sanitation innovations, named "Stimulating local innovation on sanitation for the urban poor in sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia".

UNESCO-IHE, The Netherlands, and its partners Makerere University in Uganda, KNUST in Ghana, AIT in Thailand, 2iE in Burkina Faso, ITB in Indonesia, UCT in South Africa, UFMG in Brazil, and Univalle in Colombia were awarded a US$ 8 million grant from the Gates Foundation to finance the 5-year capacity building and research project.

To support the research component of the project 20 PhD positions for junior researchers are funded by the project at 8 host institutions.

The five research themes are:

Smart sanitation provision for slums & informal settlements
Emergency sanitation following natural & anthropological disasters
Resource oriented decentralized sanitation
Low cost wastewater collection & treatment
Faecal sludge management

12 PhD positions at Gjovik University College, Norway

The faculty of Computer Science and Media Technology announces 12 PhD projects. The faculty consists of two sections: the Norwegian Information Security Laboratory (NISlab) and the Media Technology Laboratory (MTL). Of the 12 positions are 8 within NISlab and the remaining 4 withing MTL.

Algorithmic Game-Theoretical Models of Colluding Adversaries under External Constraints (NISlab)
The project seeks to extend recent results in coalitional and algorithmic game theory where the transferable utility assumption commonly made does not hold. These constraints arise from the notion of active adversaries, which do not allow for equilibria to be studied naively, and also from the need to accomodate the existence of a nature player simultaneously.

Civil Law Concepts in Access Control (NISlab)
The project is to investigate how access control models could benefit from integration of civil law concepts: Business contracts could be more easily expressed as access control policies; liability for events in computer systems could be addressed more easily.

Fake-Resistant Fingerprint Biometrics
Authentication of individuals based on fingerprints is a widely used approach. However it is easy to reproduce an artefact and thus fake state of the art sensors. The project shall research effective spoofing countermeasures based on new imaging techniques.

Forensic Author Attribution (NISlab)
The project will study machine-learning techniques for the forensic attribution and identification of authors of text-based communication, e.g., email, messages and chat. Main objective is to design computational methods that are able to cope with sparse, imbalanced data sets, obfuscation, and partial knowledge in the final decision-making.

KEYstroke dynamics BiOmetric Authentication Research and Development (KEYBOARD) (NISlab)
The project seeks to investigate security and performance of static and continuous keystroke dynamics systems. Special attention will be on biometric keystroke dynamics on mobile devices like iPad and using keystroke dynamics to enhance security for online. One of the main research goals will be to investigate the security of keystroke dynamics systems.

Large-Scale Online Learning for Intrusion Detection and Proactive Forensics (NISlab)
The project will study and develop new machine-learning techniques for intrusion detection and proactive forensics. A main objective is to design computational methods and algorithms that are able to cope with massive data, obfuscation, adversarial activities and changing environments.

Process Tracking for Forensic Readiness in Operating Systems (NISlab)
Forensic analysis of computer systems suffers from a sparseness of logging of events. The project seeks to establish a log of all state-changing activities of important processes, analogous to a flight data recorder used to investigate plane crashes.

Using Theories from Economics and Finance to Address Information Security Risk Management (NISlab)
Risk is a consequence of lack of information. To ensure effective risk management, it is not obvious what kind of information should be collected and how much resources should be spent on collecting this additional information. The research will take a multidisiplinary perspective, importing ideas from (behavioural) economics, (computational) finance, Information Security, Computer Science etc.

Audio- and Video-Guided Interactive Performance of Computer Music (MTL)

This project focuses on the use of mobile and web-based technologies in technology-enhanced learning. PhD studentship at School of Mathematical Sciences at University College Dublin

A PhD studentship in mathematics is available in the School of Mathematical Sciences at University College Dublin for up to four years to work on a project Positivity in Matrix Theory. The project addresses one of the most intriguing and challenging mathematical topics in the theory of positive operators: spectral properties of nonnegative matrices.

(Positivity arises in a large variety of settings: time, money, goods, buffer sizes, queue lengths, network data, packet flow rates, human, animal and plant populations, concentration of substances, light intensity levels, probabilities---these are all positive. The wide range of applications of positivity gives rise to many problems that have substantial value in pure mathematics and enrich research in linear algebra and other branches of mathematics.)

Candidate Profile

The successful applicant should have a B.S. or masters degree in pure or applied mathematics. Relevant background would include linear and abstract algebra, functional analysis, combinatorics, computational skills and experience writing mathematical text.

Stipend

The fellowship includes an annual stipend of e18,000 (tax free) and payment of annual tuition fees for European Union students, as well as funding for international research visits and attendance at international conferences. Note that the scholarship does not cover full tuition for students from outside the European Union, which is significant.

Howard E. LeFevre '29 Emerging Practitioner Fellowship

The Architecture Section of the Knowlton School of Architecture (KSA) is searching for applicants with demonstrated talent and enthusiasm for the making and teaching of architecture. Within an award-winning facility designed by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, the KSA fosters a unique environment for innovative design research and critical inquiry. The School enjoys the benefits of a large research institution including collaborative relationships with The Wexner Center for the Arts and the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design. The School is comprised of three sections: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning. Architecture has approximately 300 students (225 UG and 75 G), 14 fulltime faculty members, and 20 adjunct faculty members. The strong regional base of the school is complemented by a broad global agenda, evidenced by international programs and initiatives throughout the world. Augmenting the intellectual environment of the Section are the Herbert Baumer Distinguished Visiting Professorships, the Howard E. LeFevre ’29 Emerging Practitioner Fellowship and outstanding lecture and exhibition series. Publications include Source Books and PRAXIS, Journal of Writing and Building.

The Fellowship provides a 9-month residency for an emerging practitioner to investigate a specific project related to his/her overall development, to produce within the Fellowship period an exhibition and lecture of that work, and to develop their ideas in the context of teaching in architectural design studio. A Graduate Research Assistant will assist in producing the proposed project and monograph. A wide range of possible topics for study will be considered, with preference to those which can most take advantage of the school’s resources in history, contemporary culture and theory; advanced techniques in the design of buildings and cities; and research in technology, media and material assemblies.

A fully funded three and half year PhD scholarship is available to work under the supervision of Professor James Warren, who is coordinating one research stream of a 7-year Major Collaborative Research Initiative (MCRI) anchored at McGill University entitled 'The Indian Ocean World: The Making of the First Global Economy in the context of Human–Environment Interaction'. The Asia Research Centre provides high quality training to postgraduate students. In-house seminars, seminars held in cooperation with other institutions at Murdoch University, and visits to the Centre by eminent scholars, policy-makers and industry representatives ensure that postgraduates interact in a stimulating and supportive environment.

2 MPhil/PhD Fee-Waiver Bursaries in History

Funding:

The Department of History is inviting applications for 2 three-year bursaries, open to incoming students, tenable from 24 September 2012. Bursaries will be initially offered for one year and will be renewed annually, subject to satisfactory progress reports.

Deadline for applications: 5pm, Tuesday 8 May 2012

The department will waive the full-time Home/EU tuition fees otherwise payable by the student. This award is open to applications from incoming students who have been awarded a full-time place on the MPhil/PhD programme in the History department commencing in September 2012.

We also welcome applications from international students – however, the award will not exceed the home/EU fee per annum. In this instance, the bursaries will comprise fee-discount awards rather than full fee waivers.

Bursaries will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence. Consideration will also be given to allocation of awards across the spectrum of subjects studied within the department. For more details on the existing expertise in the department, see: http://www.gold.ac.uk/history/staff/

The award cannot be held in combination with an award from a Research council or similar body.

The deadline for applications is 5pm Tuesday 8 May 2012. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews on Wednesday 6 June.

Goldsmiths Humanitarian Scholarship

There are four awards available to students studying for a taught Master’s degree at Goldsmiths. The scholarship provides full tuition fees and living costs for one year, as well as airfares to and from the UK.

Two of these awards will be reserved for students from Palestine. The remaining two scholarships are open to students who are from countries affected by widespread oppression, persecution, political or military strife such that their human right to postgraduate education is denied to them.

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must have applied for a place on a full-time postgraduate taught degree and have an international fee liability. You will also need to demonstrate academic excellence and/or significant achievement in your chosen field of study.

Please note that you will not be eligible to apply for this scholarship if you:

Are currently studying in the UK
Are currently resident in the UK
Already hold a Master’s qualification
How to apply

You will need to complete a Humanitarian scholarship application form 2012-13 (MS Word) and return it by email to international-office@gold.ac.uk or by post to International Office, Goldsmiths University of London, New Cross, London SE14 6NW, United Kingdom.

Please note that your application form for a scholarship is processed separately from your application form for admission. You must therefore ensure that you provide COPIES of all relevant transcripts and certificates with the application.

Deadline
We encourage students to apply as soon as possible. Applications must reach us by 1 April 2012.

Selection criteria
All applications will be assessed on academic merit and potential to contribute to the life of the college – financial circumstances will not be taken into account.
