HMC PROJECTS IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE OPPORTUNITY FOR TEACHERS TO SPEND A YEAR IN THE U.K. AS ASSISTANT TEACHERS DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2011-2012

Applications are invited from teachers or university students training to be teachers who are nearing the end of their course to spend one year in a British Independent School as Assistant Teachers.

Aims: To provide teachers with the opportunity to gain experience of the British educational system, to understand something of the British way of life and to gain a greater command of English.

Recruitment: Teachers of the following subjects are most easily placed: Mathematics, Sciences, Information Technology, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education and Sport, Junior Classes. There are occasionally vacancies for teachers of French, German, Spanish or History and Geography, and possibly for teachers of English, who generally assist with teaching the language to students from overseas, but these teachers should normally offer at least one other subject.
Most vacancies are for secondary teachers (pupils aged 11-18) but some vacancies do exist also for teaching younger pupils (aged 7-13) and occasionally for kindergarten).

Essential Qualities

* having a good knowledge of English: ability to communicate easily but total fluency is not essential if you are willing to learn quickly
* competent in subject area(s)
* willing to gain experience in a residential situation
* friendly and outgoing attitude
* adaptable in unfamiliar situations
* able to integrate easily and work in a team
* confident and independent
* hardworking, willing and highly motivated
* ready to supervise sports and contribute to extra-curricular activities (expertise in a sport, music, drama or other activity would be welcome but not essential)
* having a commitment to share the experience with others on returning home.

Accommodation: This is generally provided by the host school, usually in boarding houses where the teacher will act as a resident tutor for boarding children.

Food: Will normally be provided during term-time and usually involves eating with other resident tutors and school boarders.

Dependants: The allowance and accommodation are not sufficient for dependants. Applicants must be prepared to go alone, although short visits from dependants, partners or spouses during the holidays may be possible after negotiation with the school.

Remuneration: Teachers will not receive a full teacher's salary but will be paid not less than ?177.90 per week throughout the year, from which a small sum may be deducted by the school for accommodation and meals taken in school. Teachers will also have to pay a small contribution to
National Insurance, for access to free treatment under the National Health Service for all medical needs except dental treatment, which is not covered.

Travel Expenses: selected candidates cover their own travel expenses to and from the UK.

Fees: Teachers whose applications are successful and who take up places in British schools will be asked to contribute ?750 to cover a part of the costs incurred directly for their benefit. This amounts only to about ?15 per week. We do not require the total sum in advance but
accept the payment in two parts, the first ?375 being due by 1 December, 2010 and another ?375 by 1 March, 2011. Money does not have to be transferred to the UK in advance, as teachers can wait until they have been paid by their schools.

This salary should leave you with enough money for your own use after the costs of accommodation and food have been met. This should be sufficient for you to join friends when they go out to go to the theatre or a football match, to buy clothes in the sales and to travel to interesting places in the country. Our aim is for you to be able to make the best use of your time in Britain, although you may find many items expensive.

Applications should include a full curriculum vitae (including postal address and e-mail address), a covering letter indicating the reasons for applying and any special interests, talents or hobbies, and a photocopy of your degree certificate. Applicants should also include
letters of recommendation from two referees.

Interviews will be arranged by the coordinator in each country. These will probably take place during the period end of January to early March 2011. Applicants will normally be informed if they have been successful during the period mid-April to end-May.

Orientation Course: Successful candidates will be invited to attend an orientation course at Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge from 2-5 September 2011 for all teachers and scholars from Central and Eastern Europe. They should travel to the UK on 2 September unless they are
required to join their schools before then in the event of an earlier start to the school year.

Please return your complete application by *December 17, 2010* to: Nadace Open Society Fund , Zdenka Almerová, Seifertova 47, 130 00 Praha 3, "teachers"

USA: Internship at Voice of America - Share Your Experience About Studying in U.S.

*INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AT VOICE OF AMERICA - SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCES ABOUT STUDYING IN THE U.S.*

Deadline to apply: *September 6th, 2010*

Seeking talented and creative writers/reporters to contribute to a blog about student life in the U.S. Voice of America, an international news and broadcasting organization, is looking for a few great contributors to share their experiences, challenges and triumphs with our audience, and to give international students a glimpse into what it's like to study in the U.S.

International students studying in the U.S. are particularly encouraged to apply.

As part of the blog's inaugural writing class, you will have an opportunity to help shape its direction and to experiment with multimedia journalism and innovative forms of storytelling. You will write about all aspects of university life, from the mundane (what is college food like?) to the deep (how do you develop your identity on
campus?) to the fun (what's the social life like?) to the practical (what was the application process like?). The more creative you can be in finding and telling great stories the better.

You will come away with a portfolio of professional writing, and we will work closely with you throughout your internship to help perfect your writing and storytelling skills. Course credit may be available if your university permits it.

You must:
- Have exceptional writing skills. Previous experience in journalism and/or blogging is a plus, but not required. Multimedia skills (video, audio, photography) would also be an asset
- Be a current college/university student (or be applying to college/university this year). International students and American study abroad students are particularly encouraged to apply, but we're looking for people from a range of backgrounds, majors and degree levels (grad and PhD students included)
- Be willing to contribute at least once a month when school is in session
- Be able to commit for at least a semester, preferably for the full year.

We are located in Washington, DC, but you do not need to be local to apply. In fact, we are looking for people from around the country who can provide a variety of perspectives.

To apply:
Submit a cover letter, resume and two writing (or multimedia) samples demonstrating the type of style this project will require to jstahl@voanews. com.

Applications due by Sept. 6 (flexible - if you would like to apply but will not be back at school by this date, send an email indicating your intent to apply and we can accept the application materials later)

Questions?

Reminder: Model European Union 2010 in Strasbourg, France

Model European Union is a simulation of the decision-making process, which takes place in the European Institutions, being organized each year in the building of the European Parliament, in Strasbourg, France. In 2009 the event was a massive success! The 120 participants came from almost all EU member states + Turkey and Iceland. Besides, the MEU 2009 was honored by the presence of Mr Reiner Wieland, ex-vice-president of the European Parliament, who took part in our panel discussion on the European Identity and the way young people relate to it.

After last year's succes, the MEU 2010 is planned to be an ever bigger event! The number of participants was raised to 180 and the roles, that the participants will be able to adopt during the simulation, will be those of an MEP, Comissioner, lobbyst, journalist or interpreter. The two topics of debate will be the law regarding genetically modified organisms and the Return Directive 2008, two very `hot' topics of debate, which will surely start difficut, but very interesting debates.

MEU is an extrodinary chance for any young person, because it gives them the opportunity to get to know in a non-fromal manner the democratic process which takes place in the European Institutions, teaching them at the same time the necessity of cooperating and compromising, as well as communicating with and accepting people with different cultures. It is surely an European event, which aims at informing and bringing closer citizens of EU member states. And the fact that the event takes place in the European Parliament makes everything more authentic!We are NOT looking for people of specific political views. We are just looking for people interested in what happens at the European level, who are opinionated and are eager and capable of taking part in this event, contributing at the same time in a positive manner.

If you are interested in what you have read so far, please do not hesitate to visit us at www.meu2010. org or join our Facebook group, in order to stay tuned with the latest news!

Event: Serbia's EU Integration: unfinished business, but who is to finish it?

Centre for the Study of Global Governance public lecture
Serbia's EU Integration: unfinished business, but who is to finish it?

Date: Thursday 14 May 2009

Time: 4.00-5.30

Venue: G108

Speaker: Dr Milica Delevic

Chair: Dr Denisa Kostovicova

Ever since Milosevic's fall in 2000, Serbia's membership of the European Union (EU) has been one of the most popular policies of the Serbian Government. Despite this, Serbia's progress towards the EU has been riddled with obstacles and delays. This lecture addresses the question why Serbia's EU integration is still an 'unfinished' business nine years after the transition began, and, even more importantly, who can finish the job?

Milica Deleviæ is Director of the European Integration Office of the Government of Serbia and lecturer in Foreign Policy of Serbia at the Faculty of Political Science of the Belgrade University. She was Assistant Foreign Minister (2007 - 2009) and deputy director of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2002-2003). She directed the Serbia and Montenegro European Integration Office (2003 2004) and coordinated the National Strategy of Serbia for EU accession.

This event is free and open to all with no ticket required. Entry is on a first come, first served basis. For more information, email events@lse.ac. uk or phone 020 7955 6043.

Transart Open House New York February 28, 2009

Transart Institute will hold an Open House Event during it's annual winter residency in New York. Prospective applicants are invited to attend a guest artist lecture, a question and answer period, and the Transart Institute exhibition and reception on Saturday, February 28 from 5:00 - 8:00 at the Sideshow Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. This is a unique opportunity to become familiar with the program, get in contact with current students, get to know faculty and directors and ask all the questions that don't fit into email.

Guest artist this year is Mary Flanagan who will talk about her recent projects. Mary is an artist who works with prevalent themes in emerging technology to create systems that rethink everyday experience: http://maryflanagan .com

Transart Institute is a student-centered, self-directed MFA program, uniquely located in Europe offering an accredited two year low-residency course for working artists. The innovative program consists of three intensive summer residencies with lectures, workshops, critiques, seminars, performances and exhibitions in Europe and two shorter, optional winter residencies in New York. In the four semesters between residencies, students create their own course of study realizing individual art and research projects with the support of faculty and self-chosen artist mentors wherever they work and live.
