The Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU, Trondheim, Norway, is launching a large three-year (2007-2009) National Strategic Research Programme (Institusjonsforank ret strategisk prosjekt (ISP)) within the area of Engineering Science.
The national programme comprises the following main areas:
Energy from the North
Renewable Energy
Sustainable Infrastructure
and will be carried out as a multidisciplinary cooperation between research groups at the Faculties of Engineering Science and Technology; Natural Sciences and Technology; Architecture and Fine Art; and Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering. The national programme is funded jointly by the Research
Council of Norway and NTNU, and represents a follow-up of the advices brought forward by an international evaluation of research activities in Engineering Science at Norwegian universities and colleges.
A main part of the national programme will be 17 PhD and 5 postdoc research fellowships.
The overall objective of the ISP project is to strengthen the basic research in engineering science and technology at NTNU within areas of national strategic importance, and bring this research up to a level of international excellence.
The project comprises research areas of strategic and long term importance in Norway as well as internationally. The large number of research fellowships will be the core of a valuable network, and the project will be an excellent opportunity to each of the fellows to get involved in important research areas and create individual
international contacts and networks.

Applicants for PhD fellowship should have an MSc or similar degree
within relevant engineering or technology areas. (Students completing
their MSc before 1 July 2007 are also encouraged to apply.)
Applicants must be qualified for PhD study at faculties involved in
the project, respectively. The application should comprise a 2-3
pages description of the research plans (including scope, objectives
and approach), based on discussions with the supervisor in charge. A
brief recommendation from the supervisor must be included.
The PhD research fellowships are awarded for a total of 3 or 4 years.
Fellowships for 4 years include 25 % of teaching assistance at
bachelor's and master's degree level. These duties are commonly
distributed over the 4 years, with a larger proportion in the first
two years.
Applicants for postdoc fellowship must indicate which position they
apply for (Indicated by the listed topics with postdoc). A 3 - 5
pages description of the proposed research must be included together
with a CV and a full publication list.
Salaries
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, in the State salary
scale 41-46, gross NOK 310 500 to NOK 338 300 per annum (before tax).
Postdoc fellows are remunerated in code 1352, in the State salary
scale 54-77, gross NOK 389 400 to NOK 604 900 per annum (before tax).
PhD candidates are normally remunerated at wage level 41, whereas
postdoc fellows are normally remunerated at wage level 54. There will
be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from
gross salary.
The appointment of the PhD or postdoc fellow will be made according
to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges.
Applicants for a PhD position are obliged to engage on an organized
research programme, and appointment requires approval of the
applicant's plan for PhD study.
The position adheres to the Norwegian Government's policy of balanced
