Graduate Course "Divided Societies: Research, Methodology, Ethics" 16-23 April 2011

Divided Societies is a graduate course that will in 2011 enter its fifteenth year. This year's subtitle 'Research, Methodology, Ethics' focuses the course on theoretical, methodological, ethical and practical issues of research in divided societies. These issues are always present in designing and carrying out research as well as in its presentation and dissemination, already as preliminary questions, but are seldom given adequate scholarly attention. In the traditional view of social sciences, every research requires a firm theoretical basis and a clearly defined (preferably disciplinary) methodological framework that should follow prescribed ethical principles. However, the success of research on complex phenomena such as ethnicity and divided societies to a large extent depends on the combination of different theoretical frameworks, the utilization of several disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approaches and methodologies, as well as on the complex ethical issues that do not only take into account the research process, but also the possible impacts of the research process and results in a given environment.

These issues will be addressed by the course that is an eight-day, interdisciplinary workshop combining conference-oriented presentation of scholarly research with an intensive and rigorous academic program for graduate and advanced undergraduate students. In addition, the course offers personal inter-cultural experience of students and faculty from other contexts in the unforgettable setting of a city that was itself the target of a destructive conflict.

HESP/OSI scholarships
Scholarships may be granted to participants of a certain number of IUC courses in the field of humanities and social sciences.

An individual grantee may receive only one scholarship per calendar year and not more than two years in a row. If a candidate has received a scholarship two years in a row he/she can re-apply after two years.

Scholarships may be obtained by participants from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Republic of Georgia, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine. Exceptionally, one scholarship per course may be granted for lecturers coming from the countries mentioned.

Scholarships may be granted to PhD students or to young faculty members under the age of 40 who are studying or working in fields of humanities and social sciences.

Scholarships cover costs of hotel accommodation (half board) in Dubrovnik. Reservations are made by the agency Gulliver and direct payments of hotel services are made by the IUC Secretariat. Exceptionally, a limited number of participants from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Republic of Georgia, Russia, and Ukraine may receive partial compensation of travel expenses. This does not apply for students studying in EU or other western universities.

Applications must be made on a special HESP form (download from IUC web site) and submitted to the IUC Secretariat at least one month before the start of the particular course.

KiM is a platform for the synthesis of practice and theory assuming the constitutive complexity of the actual stage arts. This Course focuses on the following areas:

鈥� Re-define and (re)-act our practices as performing artists within the frame of rigorous physical training, in the doing as well as in the theory.

鈥� Interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies as ways of integrating the whole of the performer in his body/movement, imagination/ spirit, voice/text/mind.

鈥� We use the cultural platform of Berlin to see a vast variety of theatre plays, dance, performances, film and installations establishing a dialog and reflexive thinking with our own way of conceiving the phenomenon stage art.

Process and Product Design post-graduate program at TU Eindhoven

The Process and Product Designers Course is a two year program which gives you the PDEng degree (not a PhD Title) when you finish.

In the first year of the program, detailed attention is given to building up knowledge and bridging the gap between theory and practice. To create a broadly based, top-level interdisciplinary program, the basic component is formed by a coherent set of courses, in which group assignments and teamwork play central roles. All courses are purpose-made for this designer's program, and are given mainly by lecturers from industry. All courses in the program are taught in English, but an optional Dutch language course is also offered.

Technological design projects are carried out in the second year. These are challenging projects - carried out in collaboration with industry over twelve months - with a high reality value that are aimed at developing the trainee design engineers' abilities. The projects involve reaching a specific design objective within a restricted period of time and with limited means. Students will be coached by design engineers from industry and by university staff with clear and relevant design experience. The projects are monitored by project planning, regular progress meetings and monthly project management meetings.

To apply for our PPD Course you need to hold a Masters Degree (MSc), preferably in Chemical Engineering, or at least have a firm background in Chemical Engineering. Candidates without the proper background will not be considered by our Selection Committee. To guarantee the quality of the program, the PPD selection committee applies strict selection criteria. Candidates must be among the top 25% of their discipline. Next to excellent grades, their motivation and personality is extremely important.

For an application we expect a letter with motivation and extended Curriculum Vitae, a copy of your diplomas, a list of taken courses with marks, one or two recommendation letters and a copy of your passport together with a passport photograph. A proof of English is important (e.g. IELST). Your diploma and list of followed courses must be translated officially into English.

Starting in October 2010, the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Technische Universität Dresden offers a new international MSc program in the field of computational and advanced civil engineering. The course is taught in English and addresses a broad international community. The expertise of the Faculty with a strong emphasis on numerical methods and a large field of research topics in engineering is associated to a wide national and international research network.

The Human Rights Law Centre of the School of Law of the University of Nottingham offers human rights short courses for graduate students and others wishing to a career in human rights at the international or national levels. We offer a one term course twice a year (September/October to December, and January to March) which provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of UN and regional human rights systems by faculty and visiting lecturers who have experience of the systems in practice.

We also offer a two term course beginning in September/October in which the second term is spent in a human rights internship in an IGO or an NGO. Many former course students now work in such organisations, and the Centre has extensive contacts with them.

Description: The Educational Center Preko (POU Preko) is located in a beautiful charming old building which has been totally renovated on 2007. in the village Preko on the island of Ugljan.

Erasmus Mundus MSc course in MathMods (Mathematical Modelling in Engineering: Theory, Numerics, Applications) Scholarships: Several Erasmus Mundus scholarships are offered by the European Commission to non-European students. These scholarships amount to a maximum of EUR 42,000.00 to cover the two-year expenses and are granted to the most promising applicants. A limited number of scholarships are also available for European students.

Institution. The MSc course is offered by a consortium of five universities in Europe,coordinated by the University of L'Aquila in Italy (UAQ) and involves other four leading institutions in Europe:
Autonomous University of Barcelona in Catalonia (UAB),
University of Hamburg in Germany (UHH),
Gdansk University of Technology in Poland (GUT),
University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis in France (UNSA).

Aims. Mathematical modelling lies at the heart of most current technological innovations and has become a fundamental tool in many fields of engineering. Essentially multidisciplinary in its applications, mathematical modelling and simulation is in its own right a key technology which is bound to increase its presence within efficient industries and businesses. The proposed programme reflects this multidisciplinarity, drawing on the unifying mathematical aspects from the various and often separate engineering disciplines Study Plan. MathMods MSc course is divided into four semesters. Each semester totals 30 ECTS credits. Mobility scheme will involve at least two institutions.

The FIRST YEAR is common for all students. This will guarantee an equal knowledge platform for all of them.

First semester: Theory (UAQ)

Second semester: Numerics (UNSA)

The SECOND YEAR will be divided into five branches, which reflect the partners' field of excellence:

Third semester: Applications (UAB / UHH / UAQ / GUT / UNSA)

Advanced computational methods in material science

Mathematical modelling applications to biology and finance

Modelling and simulation of electronic devices

Modelling, simulation, and optimization of complex systems

Stochastic modelling and optimization.

Fourth semester: Thesis (UAB / UHH / UAQ / GUT / UNSA)

Language. The language of the whole course will be exclusively English at each of the five universities. Students will also have to attend a local language course during the semester they are spending in each university partner.

Admission criteria. Applicants must have obtained a recognized Bachelor's Degree (BS, BSc, SB, etc.) – or a degree at the level of a Bachelor's Degree, for instance its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of high standing, or 180 ECTS credits in the European system – in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering with a large background in Mathematics.All applicants whose native language is not English are required to prove a satisfactory level of spoken and written English, certified by TOEFL (550 points), IELTS (6.0 points) or equivalent.

The Course on International Security aims to provide to the students a wide and updated overview of the field of International Security. While the first module is dealing with the theoretical framework provided by an approach based on Critical Security Studies, Strategic Studies, and Intelligence, the second, third, and fourth modules are the real case studies. History of the Armed Conflict aims to help the students to grasp the main differences between the conflicts erupted before and after the end of the Cold War, and more precisely the wars in Bosnia, Uganda, the First and the Second Golf War, the importance of natural and energy resources for conflicts, and a wide understanding of the cause of Ethnic Conflicts. Cet enseignement est destiné aux médecins, pharmaciens, scientifiques et vétérinaires souhaitant consolider leurs connaissances théoriques et pratiques en typage moléculaire des bacilles de la tuberculose, et approfondir les applications clinico-épidémiologiques. Depuis sa création en 2000, le cours a été suivi par plus d’une centaine de participants en provenance de 60 pays.

Les candidats doivent avoir de bonnes connaissances en mycobactériologie et biologie moléculaire, et des bases en épidémiologie. Le cours associe conférences et travaux pratiques centrés sur l’utilisation des outils moléculaires de typage. Les thèmes abordés sont la génomique, l’évolution, la diversité et la génétique des populations des bacilles de la tuberculose, ainsi que les applications dans la recherche, dans le laboratoire de mycobactériologie clinique et dans des enquêtes épidémiologiques concernant des problèmes individuels ou de la communauté. Les travaux pratiques portent sur la réalisation des différentes méthodes de typage basées sur l’utilisation d’un équipement de laboratoire de base ainsi que sur leur analyse critique à l’aide des outils informatiques.

Aga Khan University Medical College's Bioethics Unit is organising a one-month certificate course in Research Ethics from July 21 to August 20, 2008 in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA. This course is funded by the Higher Education Commission, Government of Pakistan and United States Agency for International Development through the United States-Pakistan Science and Technology Cooperative Programme, and is designed to help meet
Pakistan's increasing need for training in the ethics required in research on human subjects. Salient areas offered in this course are Contemporary Bioethics, Philosophy (Islamic and Western) and various topics under Research Ethics.

Eligibility

Doctors, nurses and other professionals associated with health care, social scientists, health activists, journalists, lawyers and others who wish to develop a fuller understanding of research ethics are encouraged to apply.

Please be informed that the Global Human Rights Leadership Training Institute (GHRLTI) is now accepting applications for this year Certificate Course on “Human Rights Leadership Development and Training”, 1st June 2007 - 18th July 2008.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The “Human Rights Leadership Development and Training” course aims to develop a comprehensive experience of human rights learning by equipping potential human rights educators, advocates, activists, students, volunteers, and law enforcement officers with knowledge and skills to:- Integrate knowledge in the fields of politics, economics, cultural diversity, gender issues and socio-psychology in the context of human rights.- Strategize training and methodology required for promoting human rights education in various countries across all sectors of the society.- To explore the specificities and points of commonality of the non-formal and the formal education contexts in relation to human rights learning.

The programme consist of 6 different modules, discussion and empowerment session each of which is geared towards helping the participants understand and internalize the Human Rights learning approach to development. Furthermore, by creating a learning environment that caters for their specific needs it is expected that the participants will be empowered to emerge as human rights educators themselves. The programme will give participants creative, concrete knowledge of how to use international and regional human rights treaties and enforcement mechanisms in their work for the protection of human rights.

BENEFITS :

The overall objective of this course is to provide participants with an introduction to the concept of human rights, design and implementation of successful human rights learning in their organisation and communities. The course can be used to establish or strengthen human rights policies and practices both in the public and private sector.

The maximum number of course participants is 30. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation.

TARGET AUDIENCE :

The course is aimed at human rights educators, advocates, activists, law enforcement officers, lawyers, women activists, programs managers, research officers, leaders and members of coalitions and networks, staff of NGOs and CBOs, donor agency program officers, volunteers, development actors, trainers, students, ministry of Justice officials, government officials etc.

COST:

The course tuition fee is US$200. There is a limited amount of partial scholarships available for this course for applicants from developing countries and newly independent states, based on financial need.

Institute of Legal Studies of Polish Academy of Sciences, Poznan Human Rights Centre and Adam Mickiewicz University, Faculty of Law and Administration, in partnership with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (Lund, Sweden) and with financial support of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights are organizing the 17-th edition of the Course on International Protection of Human Rights - Rights of National Minorities.

The Course will take place in Poznan (Poland) from 1 to 10 September 2008.

The main objective of the Course is to enhance the participants' knowledge and understanding of the existing standards and institutional aspects of the protection of human rights at the international level. This year's edition will focus additionally on issues related to the rights of national minorities. The Course is offered particularly to young researches, lawyers, students and NGO activists.

The Course consists of 60 hours of lectures and case-studies. The lectures will be held by eminent professors and experts in the field of human rights and international law. The case studies will involve discussions on decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and the UN treaty bodies.

The working language of the Course is English.

The number of participants is limited to 25 persons.

Those successfully completing the Course will obtain a certificate of attendance.

We would like to inform you that the registration fee is 200 euro. Organizers provide participants with accommodation in double rooms in a student hostel, meals (breakfast and lunch) and teaching materials. Upon specific requests registration fee may be reduced. SKMCH & RC is pleased to announce the PACES preparatory course after successfully holding it previous year. The course is aimed at candidates preparing for the PACES EXAM and also anyone wanting to update their communication skills for exams. We will primarily be covering stations 2 & 4 as traditionally non UK graduates have had trouble with them.

SALIENT FEATURES:

1. Topics like essential history taking and communication skills will be covered in these lectures.
2. Important ethical issues like DNR, taking off ventilator, NG feed etc, will be discussed in accordance with current UK laws.
3. It also involves practice of scenarios with the tutors being the actors plus assessor.
4. In the end a Mock exam will be held in which the marking sheets used will be those used by the Royal College to give the candidates a feel for the exam and the marking process.

Registration fee of Rs. 6,000/- needs to be deposited at the Human Resources Department, SKMCH & RC. Confirmation of acceptance will be made on receipt of the course fee.
