Introduction to the scientific field
With the aim to introduce laser-based non-linear microscopy techniques, anticipated to become as important within molecular biology as fluorescence microscopy is today, a unique facility has been set up at Chalmers University of Technology. Efficient use of an advanced high-repetition-rate pulsed laser system offers imaging based on Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS), as well as second and third harmonic generation.
These upcoming multi-photon techniques enable selective imaging of biomolecules and supermolecular structures in living biological cells without the need for exogenous labeling. Thus, biochemical processes can be visualized without interference in their natural environment. The microscope facility is also devised with a detection path for multi-photon excited fluorescence and corresponding lifetimes, which allows simultaneous imaging of specifically labeled, fluorescing signaling proteins.
The project
The specific target of the project will be to develop non-linear microscopy techniques and micro-fluidic systems for long-term monitoring of the chemical processes of ageing in living cells. This work is a central part of an interdisciplinary collaboration with the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Göteborg University, and is acknowledged high importance by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, the financial sponsor.
The employment
The post-doctoral fellow will devote 100% of his/her activities to the research project. The employment is limited to one year with an option for a second year.
The applicant
The applicant should have a Ph.D. in a closely related research field. Experience in non-linear optics, Raman microspectroscopy, micro-fluidic systems, handling ultra-short-pulsed laser systems and modern microscopes will be meriting.
The application
The application, including your Curriculum Vitae with a detailed list on your research experience, doctoral thesis, educational background, contact information and letters of reference, should preferably be sent to: registrator@adm.chalmers.se, or by mail: Registrator, Chalmers University of Technology, SE-412 96 Göteborg, Sweden. Two PhD-positions in Nanooptics
With focus on biological applications and fundamental studies, respectively
Direct recruitment applied. Application deadline May 31 2007. Reference number 2007/58
The last decade has witnessed a dramatic development in the area of optical microscopy and spectroscopy. Using metallic nanostructures, it is now possible to control the propagation and interaction of light at the nanoscale using so-called surface plasmon resonances. The structures can be used as nanoscopic biological tags or sensors in advanced bioimaging, medical diagnostics and biosensor development. It is also possible to use the structures to design novel materials, so-called metamaterials, with unique optical properties.
The Division of Bionanophotonics at the Department of Applied Physics, Chalmers University of Technology, now seeks two doctoral students in nanooptics. We seek creative and independent candidates with very high analytical capacity, excellent language skills and a particular interest for cross-disciplinary research.
One of the PhD positions focuses on development of biosensors and cellular markers based on gold and silver nanoparticles. Of particular interest is the possibility to design the particles resonance wavelength through nanolithography and the possibility to specify their interaction with biological structures using surface functionalization. A suitable background is Master of Science in biotechnology, chemistry, or related areas.
The other PhD position focuses on fundamental experimental studies and electrodynamics simulations of nanoptical phenomena. Of particlular interest is the possibility to control the distance between particles at the nanoscale using optical forces and the possibility to design metamaterials that exhibit negative refraction. A suitable background is Master of Science in engineering physics, physics or related areas. Both projects are conducted in a network that involves several international research groups. The PhD-positions are financed through the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), the Swedish Research Council (VR), Chalmers Biocenter and EU's framework programs.

Five PhD students in Railway Mechanics
Application deadline 8 May, 2007.
Reference number 2007/52
CHARMEC - CHAlmers Railway MEChanics - is a national centre of excellence in railway mechanics established in 1995 by NUTEK (now VINNOVA). CHARMEC is currently supported by Chalmers and Banverket and by the Industrial Interests Group comprising Abetong Teknik, Bombardier Transportation, Faiveley Transport, Green Cargo, Interfleet Technology, Lucchini Sweden, SJ, SL Technology, SweMaint and voestalpine Bahnsysteme.
The long-term CHARMEC research and knowledge bank aims at reducing the railway's costs for production, environment, operation and maintenance while improving safety, reliability and transport quality. Research is carried out within the six programme areas: Interaction of train and track, Vibrations and noise, Materials and maintenance, Systems for monitoring and operation, Parallel EU projects, and Parallel special projects.
The CHARMEC Centre of Excellence (information on the department involved in the projects is given at the bottom of this page) is seeking five new PhD students to start in the spring/summer of 2007. The research will be conducted within the five projects described below.
PhD Project 1: Thermal capacity of tread braked railway wheels
The thermal capacity of the wheels is a limiting factor for railway tread braking systems. The PhD project will continue previous CHARMEC research work on railway tread braking. The focus will be on the thermal capacity of wheels for metro applications where frequent stop-braking occurs. Mathematical modelling, rig experiments and field tests will be included. The project should develop methods and provide data that can form a basis for future design guidelines for assessing the thermal capacity of tread braked wheels. The project should identify those phenomena which put limits on the capacity of the tread braking system, outline methods for determining such limits and, finally, quantify the limits.
Thermal image of tread braked railway wheel.
The project requires a PhD-student with a good knowledge of FE-analysis and also an interest in experimental work.
PhD Project 2: Identification of wheel-rail contact forces with sensitivity and quality assessment
The project focuses on the forces in the wheel-rail contact, which are difficult to measure by direct methods. The purpose of the proposed project is to apply (and further develop) a strategy that developed within a recent CHARMEC project. As key tasks you will thereby assess an existing all-experiment based identification method for vertical wheel-rail contact forces by using the proposed method and existing measurements.
FE model of an X2 trailer wheelset including brake discs. Shape of radial eigenmode with two nodal diameters is shown.
In particular, you will study the effects of modelling and regularization on the estimated forces and propose a design of new experimental setups for accurate evaluation of the wheel-rail contact forces in the vertical, lateral and longitudinal directions. The project requires a PhD-student with a good knowledge of FE-analysis and structural dynamics.
Locations of 16 strain gauges used to measure forces in an existing measurement setup.
PhD Project 3: Thermal impact on surface initiated rolling contact fatigue of railway wheels
Railway wheels operate under extreme conditions. The loading between a wheel and the rail may equal the weight of ten automobile cars applied on a contact patch the size of a small coin. In addition, high friction occurs on curves and during traction/braking. In addition, tread braking will heat the surface material of the wheel by several hundred degrees. Naturally, wheels are prone to cracking.
As a PhD-student you will investigate under which conditions and how fast cracking will occur. In particular the influence of thermal loading will be investigated.
The project requires a PhD-student skilled and interested in numerical simulations. In particular, knowledge of FE-analysis, fatigue analysis and material mechanics is valuable.
PhD Project 4: Material anisotropy and rolling contact fatigue of rails and switches
The steel material in railheads is anisotropic. This is a well known fact, but there is little knowledge on how this anisotropy evolves and which effect it will have.
As a PhD-student you will investigate the evolution of anisotropy, and the effect it will have on the initiation and growth of fatigue cracks in the railhead. The investigations will mainly feature numerical simulations.
The project requires a PhD-student with a good knowledge of FE-analysis and constitutive modelling.
PhD Project 5: Wear impact on rolling contact fatigue of railway rails
The two dominating causes of rail deterioration are wear and fatigue cracking. Due to the severe loading on the rail surface and the high number of load repetitions, proper modelling of these mechanisms is crucial for determining the overall deterioration of the rail. To complicate matters, these phenomena interact strongly. Wear will remove small cracks, but also alter the wheel-rail contact geometry and the residual state of stress in the wheel.
As a PhD-student you will investigate the effect of wear on cracking of railway rails. In addition, also the problem of how to update the rail profile in numerical simulations will be considered. Rail wear is a consequence of millions of wheel passes. It is not possible to simulate each subsequent wheel pass in a standard manner. Instead one wishes to compute the response only for a few wheel passes and then extrapolate the results for a very large number of similar passes. The key task within this framework is to develop an efficient algorithm regarding computational efficiency and reliable results.
The project requires a PhD-student with a good knowledge of FE-analysis, fatigue analysis and constitutive modelling.
In each of the five projects, the doctoral student will have a main supervisor and associate supervisor(s). CHARMEC's network at the University and in the industry will be available to the doctoral students. The projects include applied research of industrial relevance. You will present your research at scientific seminars and conferences, to the CHARMEC Board and in reference groups. The projects require that you develop an ability to extract industrially useful results from your research and to communicate these, verbally and in writing, in Swedish and in English. This is in addition to the general requirement of good basic knowledge within your chosen research field.
You will be employed as a doctoral student by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your working time will be devoted to duties at the department in question, mainly teaching of undergraduate courses. The remaining time will be devoted to your own research education, where the aim is to complete your PhD examination within 5 years (nominal time without department duties is 4 years).
A suitable background is a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) in mechanical engineering, engineering physics or civil engineering with emphasis on computational work. Knowledge of the Swedish language is desirable but not a requirement.

Loughborough University and Coventry University are acknowledged leaders in the field of university-wide mathematics and statistics support. Their substantial experience has been harnessed in a successful bid to establish a Centre for Excellence (CETL) in the University-wide Provision of Mathematics and Statistics Support. The CETL will develop mathematics and statistics support and will incorporate innovative approaches to teaching and learning that address the widely differing curricula and individual needs of different students. All its activities will be underpinned with a systematic programme of pedagogic research.
We are currently looking for five highly motivated students for full-time three year research studentships in the Mathematics Education Centre (http://mec.lboro. ac.uk/) at the University of Loughborough, commencing 1st July 2007 if possible (and no later than 31st July 2007). The studentships will comprise full fees (at the UK/EU rate) plus £10,500 per annum maintenance grant. Research training will be provided in the first year.
The use of examples and mathematical theory in the learning of university level mathematics
One studentship is available in this area and will be supervised by Dr Lara Alcock, to study two or more of the following: undergraduate students' knowledge of examples with different combinations of properties, their use of these in general reasoning, the relationship between this knowledge and attainment in undergraduate courses, and teaching interventions that focus on helping students to develop their knowledge about the relationships between examples and mathematical. It is likely that the subject area for the study will be real analysis, and it is anticipated that this work will include both large scale quantitative and smaller scale qualitative study. NEW DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 28 APRIL 2007!
BACKGROUND
The International Summer Academy on Human Security is part of the HUMSEC project and will be held in the Human Rights City of Graz. The project is designed to contribute to a better understanding of the connection between transnational terrorist and criminal organisations in the peace-building process of the Western Balkan region not only on the scientific level: through the organisation of an annual summer academy, the network aims to bring the scientific discourse closer to civil society, to strengthen democratic principles and to raise awareness by means of human rights education and education for democratic citizenship on the danger that transnational terrorist and criminal organizations are for the states, the societies and the reconstruction process in the Western Balkan region.
The summer academy will be mainly held by experts nominated by the HUMSEC partner institutions, but also by external experts. The programme is drafted in order to give general information on the topics of human security and threats to security such as terrorism and organised crime, and to analyse the impact of terrorist and
criminal organisations on states and societies in transition. Societal factors such as poverty and corruption, but also rule of law or the influence of civil society will be studied in relation to the goals of human security and the respect for human rights. The focus will be posed on the impact that transnational terrorist and criminal organizations have on states and societies in the Western Balkan region (the leading topic of the second year of the project).
The participants will partly be selected among the HUMSEC partner institutions and partly among those who apply, following the public call for application. Participants will be selected on the basis of their field of interest and their personal motivation to be involved in the programme. Full or partial scholarships will be available in limited numbers (for eligible countries and details see under
www.summeracademy.etc-graz.at)
TOPICS

- Human security and policing
- Concepts of terrorism and organised crime
- The relationship between terrorist and criminal organisations and society
- Poverty and corruption
- Rule of law
- Human rights and democracy
- Civil society and good governance
- Synthetic approach and conclusions
METHODOLOGY
The summer academy draws on the expertise of a selected group of academics who represent the project partners from sixteen universities and academic institutions, as well as of the expertise of legal practitioners and decision-makers from various sectors. This guarantees a broad approach to the human security issue and the
special focus on terrorist and criminal organisations. The training is based on lectures, discussions and workshops; to assure sustainability and multiplying effects, the training methods put particular emphasis on the interactive approach. The academy is designed as a modular course, covering one topic per day, which
allows the transfer of knowledge, the acquisition of skills and the shaping of attitudes as well. Working language of the summer academy is English.
TARGET GROUP
The summer academy is designed as ten-day-course for
. postgraduate students,
. young professionals,
. young researchers
. and representatives of NGOs

3 year PhD position at Cologne University
Dear all,
The Institute for Geophysics and Meteorology at Cologne (K€ öln) University, Germany is inviting applications for a PhD position in Meteorology. This position is within the project TOSCA (Towards an Optimal-estimation- based Snow Characterization Algorithm) funded by the German Science Foundation and it is available for a three-year period (starting as soon as possible). The goal of TOSCA is to develop methods
for profiling snowing and thick ice clouds by exploiting a suite of active and passive microwave sensors and additional measurements in two measurement configurations (one space-borne, the other ground-based) . This will create an unprecedented test-bed for evaluating microphysical schemes for cloud and precipitating ice within climate and NWP models, thus improving the understanding of the characteristics of mid-latitude winterly precipitation.
The successful applicant will work on the development of an optimal estimation technique for ground-based profiling of ice water content, but also particle size distribution mean size and habit for given environmental conditions, i.e. temperature and humidity profiles. Specifcally the theortical focus will be on deriving/applying a suited single scattering approximation for fast radiative transfer calculations, the determination of adequate microphysical a priori profiles and the combination of cloud radar, microwave radiometer, ceilometer and disdrometer measurements into a unified retrieval scheme. Additonally, the pratical part will comprise of setting up, performing and evaluating the measurements at the Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus (http://www.schneefe rnerhaus. de) located at the top of Germany in the Alps at 2650m during two dedicated measurement campaigns.
This work requires good computing skills and background in physics, meteorology, and/or atmospheric sciences. Any knowledge/skill in microwave radiative transfer, retrieval algorithm development, radar/radiometer data analysis or carrying out remote sensing measurements will be of advantage.
Salary: 50% Bat IIa (around 1000 € ’ /month, net)
Please send a cover letter and supporting documents (CV and documentation of your academic record including a list of publications, a short description of research interests, and possibly letters of recommendation) to Dr. Ulrich L€ öhnert, Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics, Cologne University, Z€ ülpicher Stra€ ße 49a, 50674 K€ öln, Germany or to loehnert@meteo. uni-koeln. de
An electronic copy of the TOSCA proposal with full details of the project is available at http://www.meteo. uni-koeln. de/crewell/ doku.php/ tosca
The closing date is May 30, 2007.
Best regards,
Ulrich L€ öhnert

We – the Institute Européen des Hautes Etundes Internationales- would like to inform you about our nine months’ Master's program in Advanced European and International Studies.
It is targeted at students who have completed their undergraduate studies. Its objective is to give students an overarching, encompassing vision of the political, social, economic and cultural problems of today’s modern world. With internationally renowned staff from both the Institute and cooperating institutions teaching on four different modules (International Relations, European Integration, Democracy and Society, Federalism), this programme offers a unique and enriching learning atmosphere. It is characterised by challenging discussions, high quality lectures, interactive classes, and role games. A study trip to European and International Organizations completes the programme. The Institute will also help students finding internships in these institutions. The Masters degree will be awarded after the defence of a dissertation of about 100 pages and an oral exam. Students successfully completing the programme will acquire 60 ECTS credits.
