CfP: Internment, Incarceration and Detention - Captivation histories

CFP: Internment, Incarceration and Detention. Captivation histories in Europe around the First and Second World War Location: Netherlands
Deadline: 15.03.2011

On 3 and 4 November 2011 the NIOD, Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies will organize a workshop in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) on 'Internment, Incarceration and Detention. Captivation histories in Western Europe around the First and Second World War'.

Prisons and prison like institutes are an essential element of Western criminal justice. As an instrument for social control, penal institutions have become representations of the existing political and social values. When political, social and economic changes occur, they immediately have an effect on the prison system. These changes are more noticeable in times of war and peace while these are times when the prison system occupies an important place in the incarceration of enemies of the (former) regime. Therefore, during the first half of the twentieth century, when the First and Second World War occurred, the detention of both criminals and political prisoners has been highly dynamic.

However, in transitional justice history, 20th century war history and criminal justice history the practice of the prison system in the 20th century is often neglected. Studies on the prison in criminal justice history focus mainly on philosophical theories (Elias, Rusche and Kirchheimer, Foucault, Garland, etc.) and less on archival research. In 20th century war history, the focus is usually on the concentration and extermination camps. Studies concerning transitional justice often only focus on the use of law and do not regard the prison system. This workshop consequently aims to broaden the scope of case studies on captivation histories in Europe around the First and Second World War.

Nikolaus Wachsmann offers a great starting point for this aim with his book Hitler's Prisons. Legal Terror in Nazi Germany (Yale University Press: New Haven/London, 2004). In this groundbreaking study Wachsmann investigates the function of the state prisons during the Third Reich. In doing so, he argues that the Nazi prison cannot be understood without knowledge of the penal system during the Weimar Republic. In other words, studying imprisonment practices during regime changes involves paying attention to lines of continuity and discontinuity.

The NIOD Workshop 'Internment, Incarceration and Detention' seeks to explore the historical practice of incarcerating enemies of the (former) regime, the changes that occur in the existing penal system by doing so, the emergence of new types of correctional institutions and their practical implementation in imprisonment cultures. Different types of prisons should be considered, the most important being: the regular prisons, internment camps and different types of concentration camps (not the extermination camps).

We would like to invite paper proposals that explore diversified imprisonment and detention practices in implicit or explicit relation to regime change. The topics of interest may include (but are not limited to) the following issues: practices of everyday life, ideology and regime change and longterm developments.

The deadline for the submission of proposals is 15 March 2011. Please submit paper proposals (500-word maximum) with presentation title, presenter(s) name(s) and contact information via e-mail to: a.tijsseling@ niod.knaw. nl & h.grevers@niod. knaw.nl

PhD position with Stipend 2011 ( Proteomics/ Cell Signaling) at Novo Nordisk Foundation CPR Denmark

The Department of Proteomics at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research is offering a PhD stipend in the Proteomics and Cell Signaling Group.

The position is offered for a period of three years and employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) on 1 October 2008, enclosure 5. The salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and AC within the range of 23.000-30.000 DKK/month (approximately 3.100-4.000 Euro/month) for a PhD position plus a pension supplement of 17 %. The PhD candidate will be expected, over the period of the stipend, to acquire experience in teaching or other types of presentations. The tentative start date is 1 March 2011.

Background: The research at the Department of Proteomics is headed by Prof. Dr. Matthias Mann and consists of three independent groups (group leaders: Dr. Chunaram Choudhary, Dr. Michael L. Nielsen and Prof. Jesper V. Olsen). You will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of about 20 international researchers from EU, Asia and USA. The working language at the Center is English. We use cutting-edge MS technologies for unbiased identification and quantification of posttranslational modifications as well as for global proteome quantitation (Choudhary and Mann, Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol. 2010 Jun;11(6):427-39.; Choudhary et al., Mol Cell. 2009 Oct 23;36(2):326-39.; Choudhary et al., Science. 2009 Aug 14;325(5942):834-40.).

The department aims at continuously improving and applying the proteomic platform to investigate diverse biological processes. Using these approaches we will study cellular outcomes at ‘systems-level’ in response to different perturbations (such as growth factor stimulation, gene knockdown etc.). Furthermore, we use protein and peptide pull-down approaches to identify specific interaction partners. In addition to a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry infrastructure, the department is also well equipped for performing follow-up studies using molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry techniques.

The Department of Proteomics, Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR) offers one PhD fellowship for appointment by March 2011 or soon thereafter. It is a prerequisite that the PhD candidate is enrolled as PhD student at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen, according to the rules stipulated in “Bekendtgørelse Nr. 18 af 14. januar 2008 om ph.d.-graden”. The candidate should be able to conduct independent and creative research, demonstrate scientific productivity, and show good inter-personal and communication skills.

Recently, we have improved mass spectrometry-based proteomics methods for unbiased analysis of in vivo acetylation sites (Choudhary et al., Science Aug 14;325 (5942):834-40.). The applicant will use this cutting-edge technology to analyse protein lysine acetylation on a global level, and to identify regulatory acetylation sites under different cellular perturbations. In addition, our group is interested in investigating cross-talk between regulatory PTMs such as acetylation and ubiquitylation. The candidate is expected to perform biological follow-up experiments on novel and interesting findings derived from these proteome-wide PTM screens.
The PhD student will work in the Department of Proteomics together with Group Leader, Dr. Chunaram Choudhary.

Qualifications:

The candidate is required to have a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in natural or medical science.
Excellent academic track record.

Prior experience in biochemistry, cell culture and/or protein chemistry techniques is desirable.
Knowledge in one or more of the following area(s) would be considered an advantage: genetics and biology, cell signaling, high-throughput protein-protein interactions, or chromatin biology.
Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential.

Good communication skills, both oral and written.

An analytical aptitude for devising innovative scientific or technical solutions.

Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence.

For further information, please contact Group Leader, Dr. Chunaram Choudhary, chuna.choudhary@cpr.ku.dk

Your application marked “211-0076/10-3850 – PhD stipend, proteomics, Choudhary” including a CV, publication list as well as names and contact details of 2 referees must be sent to the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research before 24 January 2011.
