Double degree PhD Programme in Information and Communication Technology for Sustainable Development of United Nations University and University of Pisa

The United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) calls for applications for its PhD programme in Information and Communication Technology for Sustainable Development which starts in September 2012. The programme is designed to train the experts who will become the intellectual leaders of this emerging field to have a deep appreciation of the issues of Sustainable Development and the manner of addressing them using current and future ICT. Graduates will be obtain an understanding of the UN perspective on sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals. The programme will consist of coursework and research. Coursework will cover essential concepts of sustainable development, as well as state-of-the- art ICT taught from the viewpoint of principles so that the inevitable changes in this rapidly advancing field will not render knowledge obsolete. Students will pursue research within the multidisciplinary environment of UNU-IIST, which provides diverse opportunities for hands-on research carried out in the field. The institute's activities in policy bridging will expose students to the issues involved in using science to support policy making.

Enrollment in the programme is on a full-time basis. The programme has a 42-month duration (seven semesters). Students are primarily located at UNU-IIST in Macau SAR China and spend at least one semester at the University of Pisa. In addition, students have the opportunity to carry out field work in one or more of the various locations of activity of UNU-IIST, depending on the chosen research topic.

Upon graduation, students will receive a double PhD degree in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Students will receive two distinct PhD diplomas from the United Nations University and from the University of Pisa.

CICESE is one of the 27 research centers coordinated by Mexico’s National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) and is a recognized scientific institution at a national and international level. It's main goal is to generate knowledge that may contribute to the solution of problems that affect Mexico’s social and economic environment. Its graduate programs rank
among the best in the country, and some programs are leaders in Latin America.

SSIR'12 will be a 2 week-long residential summer school. The courses on this school are primarily aimed at last-year engineering, master and PhD students on image and robotics related programs abroad.

SSIR'12 will be hosted this year by the Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education at Ensenada, Baja California,

This summer school is the twelve in the series organized in the framework of the very active cooperation between French and Mexican researchers and institutions developing computer science.

The courses include general and fundamental knowledge for robot control and perception system design. This includes scene identification and modeling, robot localization, pattern recognition, path planning and execution and robot physical interactions. The formation will be articulated along four principal subjects:

- Perception: image processing and computer vision.
- Algorithmics: motion generation, execution and control.
- Mobile robotics.
- Learning and Bayesian methods.

No prior high knowledge of robotics nor computer vision will be required. Participants will attend to general lectures and talks on more specialized research areas, making it possible to concretely cover both research and practical subjects. Workshop sessions has been introduced in the program to allow a higher degree of interaction between students and instructors. In
workshops, voluntary students are invited to present the projects they are working on or they have already participated. Please check details for workshop proposal in the Summer School Web site.

The participation cost for the summer school are

Digital technologies and in particular high-resolution digital imaging raise issues around the nature and place of the digital image in art analysis as a supplement, surrogate or alternative to the original artefact under investigation. There are still many unanswered questions
concerning various methods for communicating the original through an image (in the broadest sense of the term).

CONFENIS is the annual international academic conference of the IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing Ð http://www.ifip.org) devoted to enterprise information systems. Enterprise information systems refer to a wide array of applications of IT systems that ranges from cross-departmental to cross-organisationa l systems. Such systems provide the information and controls required for directing, planning, running, measuring, and monitoring the activities of single or multiple (i.e., chains or networks of) enterprises. Typical examples of enterprise information systems are Accounting Information Systems (AIS), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, Supply Chain Management (SCM) systems, Business Intelligence (BI) systems, and Business Process Management Systems (BPMS). Following last year's CONFENIS doctoral consortium, Design Science in Enterprise Information Systems Research is the central theme of the doctoral consortium. The aim is to explore the Design Science approach to Information Systems research, integrating conceptual design thinking with information systems engineering research.

All PhD students interested in learning more about Design Science research are welcome to apply for admission to the CONFENIS 2012 Doctoral Consortium. Participation is limited to 20 students. In case more than 20 candidates have applied for admission at the deadline (June 15, 2012) then participants will be selected based on the quality (i.e., relevance, soundness, clarity and maturity) of their research proposals (see admission procedure) and the potential benefit
of participation to the studentÕs doctoral research. Participants in the consortium should currently be enrolled as a PhD student at a university and conduct research in the area of Information Systems. It is not a prerequisite that students use or intend to use Design Science as part of their PhD project.

We are in the process of having the Doctoral Consortium approved as a 3 ECTS PhD course (to be confirmed). Participation in all activities (see program) is required for receiving the course certificate.

All participants are required to register for the CONFENIS 2012 conference. PhD students can register at a strongly reduced tariff of 295 Euros (see http://www.confenis2012.be). The Doctoral Consortium itself is free for PhD students enrolled at Flemish Universities (as the cost for these students is covered by their doctoral schools). Other PhD students pay an additional 100 Euros for participation in the Doctoral Consortium. This fee covers all distributed materials,
lunches (2), welcome reception and social event, and the doctoral consortium diner.

The doctoral consortium sessions will be held at the premises of the faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Ghent University (see http://www.feb.ugent.be)

Format and program

The doctoral consortium consists of a mix of lecturing and tutoring sessions. The doctoral consortium staff will teach a number of topics with respect to Design Science fundamentals ranging from the philosophical underpinning of the paradigm (e.g., ontology, epistemology, É) to the concretisation of the methodology (e.g., research design, research process, É) and experiences in applying it to Information Systems research (e.g., good practices, lessons learned, É). Staff includes recognized Design Science research experts like Professor Robert Winter (University of St. Gallen, Switzerland) and Professor Guido Geerts (University of Delaware, USA). A reader with Design Science research in Information Systems must-reads will be
compiled and used as background material for these lectures.

During the tutoring sessions, the doctoral research proposals of participants are presented, analysed and discussed with the aim of providing feedback and suggestions from experts and peers. Students will be allocated to groups of each maximally 7 students and 2 Ð 3 doctoral consortium staff members (i.e., tutors). All tutors are professors having experience in supervising Design Science type of doctoral research in enterprise information systems.

PhD Studentship Atomic-scale Phenomena in Advanced Alloys University of Birmingham - School of Metallurgy and Materials

Applications are invited for a research studentships in the field of Physical Metallurgy, focussing on how solute atoms aff ect phase stability and dislocation motion in Ni-based superalloys, Co- based superalloys and ÃŸ-Ti alloys. This research will lead to the award of a PhD degree from the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham.

Research will focus on the use of ab initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) and hybrid atomic-scale techniques on a variety of technologically- important systems. The purpose of this work is to establish a relationship between the composition and the resulting mechanical properties of alloys. Occasional experimental work may be required to confirm conclusions.

Previous knowledge of the techniques involved is not necessary, but a strong background in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Physics or Mechanical Engineering is required. An interest in programming and numerical methods is preferred.

This PhD project is fully funded and covers a bursary (tax-free £13,600 per annum) and fees for 3 years and is available to UK/EU and overseas students.

Studentship Details
The CDT is dedicated to addressing the challenge of climate change and this should be reflected in the project undertaken by the successful student. Projects on offer this year include:

* Heat pumps and smart energy - a dynamic problem
This engineering/ physics project will investigate the detailed interplay between heat delivery via heat pumps, thermal mass of living spaces, other thermal storage options and the need to minimise demands on the grid.
* Multifunctional insulation materials
The majority of available insulation materials are selected only for their thermal performance. However, considerable cost reductions, energy savings and ease of operations may be achieved by the development of multifunctional insulation materials, selected for properties such as low toxicity, structural performance, ease of cutting to size, robustness for maintenance etc, in addition to thermal properties. This project will investigate the science and cost-effectiveness of multifunctional insulation materials.
* What does all this data mean?
Suited to a student with strong mathematical background, this project will employ probabilistic techniques to investigate the evidence for trends in energy consumption, and relation to physical effects.
* Development of practical tests for estimating heat losses from heat distribution systems in buildings in the field

Changes in building regulations over the last decade have meant that the annual demand for space heating is now less than that for water heating in typical new dwellings. This means that a significant proportion of heat losses associated with provision of hot water can no longer be assumed to be useful and may contribute to overheating of living spaces in Summer. In the same way that the co-heating test has been developed to enable the quanitification of fabric heat loss, there is a need for a series of tests to characterise heat losses from heat distribution and storage systems in buildings. The aim of this project is to develop, demonstrate and evaluate such tests for a variety of building types.

The above projects may evolve over the course of the MRes year, in the light of new developments. We will also consider student proposals.

Studentship Details: 1 full EPSRC funded studentship for eligible applicants

This 4 year structured PhD Programme has an annual intake of postgraduate scholars. Its establishment in 2007 was possible through funding from the Health Research Board. The programme is a joint initiative of senior academic staff from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork. They constitute a grouping called the Health Services Research Institute. Students on the course have a range of academic and clinical backgrounds. PhD positions are available in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Sheffield, under the supervision of Prof. Merlyne De Souza. The successful candidates will work in the following fields of specialisation. 1) RF Power Amplifiers 2) Communication systems for wireless sensor networks 3) Coulomb Scattering for 20 nm CMOS 4) Solar cells (fabrication, modelling and reliability) 5) Partitioning Methodologies of Systems in a Package (optimisation with modelling of cost functions).

Strong preference will be given to UK/EU nationals though overseas candidates will also be considered. Candidate Profile: Applicants should have the equivalent of a 1st class/2.1 UK degree or Masters in a relevant discipline (electrical and electronic engineering, communications engineering or physics). They should have demonstrable experience in programming, with ideally some prior experience in the field in which they wish to apply. They will be required to undertake both experimental and modelling work as necessary to carry out the tasks to high standards. They should be well motivated to do a PhD and be able to work in a timely fashion to industry deadlines, interact with colleagues and be capable of handling responsibility. They will be required to demonstrate the ability for research via formal transfer from MPhil to PhD no later than by end of the first year. They should have excellent communication skills (both oral and written) and be able to work as part of the team. They should be able to carry out tasks independently and be willing to travel and spend time in overseas organizations as required.

The candidate will be fully funded by BU for 3 years, and will work in the UK and overseas.

This project, while fully funded by the Bournemouth University, will be executed in the framework of a large EU funded INFER project (www.infer.eu). You will be primarily based in the School of Design, Engineering & Computing at BU but will also be required to frequently visit and work at our commercial partners' labs overseas (REC in Poland and Evonik Industries in Germany). This gives you a unique opportunity to gain a diverse experience of both academic and commercial environments.

The studentship carries a basic remuneration of £13800 pa tax-free and a waiver of the full-time student fee. There are no restrictions on the nationality of the applicants and the selection will be based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

The project is concerned with the incorporation of expert knowledge and performing of visual analytics through development of novel visualisation approaches and user interaction mechanisms for managing adaptive predictive systems. The studies will focus on efficient removal of complexity associated with selection and parameterisation of underlying algorithms and translation of the high level goals into effective solutions through GUI and visualisation enabled interactions. The development of the interfaces will be consulted with a diverse range of industrial users through envisaged extensive acceptability study. The research in this project will also link to and cover support for transparency of the predictive model decision making and effective visualisation of the overall system, results and decision making process itself.

Applicants should have a background in visualisation or human-computer interaction, demonstrated by a Masters/Bachelors project or industrial experience. You should have a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, physics, engineering, statistics or a similar discipline. Candidates should also have very strong programming skills using Java and an excellent working knowledge of database systems such as SQL Server or Oracle. Proficiency in or at least a working knowledge of any or the combination of C, C++, C#, Matlab, OSGi, Eclipse, EIP, Apache Camel would be an advantage.

PhD fee-waiving studentships in Electrical, Electronic Engineering and Medical Engineering for Overseas and UK/EU students Staffordshire University - Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Technology

A number of fee-waiving studentships are available to undertake PhD within the Research Centre for Energy Efficient Systems. The studentships will cover only the tuition fees and are tenable for three years. Candidates for the following projects are sought.

Project 1: Clinical Assessment and Rehabilitation using a Cost Effective 3D Motion Tracker system

Aim: Investigate the use of 3D motion trackers such as Kinect, Move etc as cost effective 3D measurement systems suitable for clinical use.

Applicant: Self motivated, experience in areas such as computer programming, 3D motion tracking and patient monitoring.

Project 2: Development of a Monitoring System and Procedure to Quantify Patient Physical Function and Injury.

Aim: Investigate the use of sensing and measurement systems and patient monitoring systems to yield quantitative clinical data.

Applicant: Self motivated, experience in areas such as data acquisition, mechanical principles, measurement systems and patient monitoring.

Project 3: Simulation of high power thyristors.

Aim: Evaluate the current thyristor models for the accurate prediction of voltage and current transients applied to high power converters for power transmission applications.

Applicant: Experience in modelling, simulation and power electronics.

Project 4: Investigation into Enabling Technologies for the Digital Industrial Design.

Aim: Investigate how new design technologies, such as CAD, haptic modelling and rapid prototyping can influence the work of industrial designers and in particular the interface between industrial and engineering design.

Applicant: Strong ability in the use of IT based design technologies and the ability to communicate with both creative and technical designers.

Project 5 : Energy storage Systems for DC traction.

Aim: Investigate energy delivery and storage systems using super-capacitors and Li-on batteries for transport systems.

Applicant: Experience of Control systems, power electronics, microprocessors and Matlab/Simulink. It is expected that a significant amount of work will be carried out in France for which travel and living expenses will be paid.

Eligibility:

Applicants should possess at least an upper-second class degree at bachelor's level, or equivalent qualification in engineering or a related discipline including physics. A Masters degree, at a merit or higher grade, will be an added advantage. IELTS or TOFEL grade at an appropriate level that meets UKBA requirement is required for international applicants.

The student will be aﬃliated with the research team of the Department of Radio Frequency Technology and Electromagnetic Compatibility in the Engineering Faculty of RheinMain University.

Job description:
Development of concepts for tunable and reconﬁgurable multi-port (MIMO) antenna systems
suitable for integration into small form factor devices under consideration of novel functionality to be provided by antenna systems in cognitive radio. Speciﬁcation, in cooperation with the project partners, of requirements as well as of F and digital control interfaces and software algorithms for the antenna systems. Design, simulation and manufacturing of prototypes of such antenna systems, characterization by measurements and support for integration into the hardware demonstrator platforms pursued by the project partners.

Dissemination of research results in scientiﬁc publications and conferences. The student is given opportunity and will be encouraged to submit a PhD dissertation related to the subject area within our joint PhD programme executed in cooperation with a Technical University.

Qualiﬁcations:
Masters degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Information & Communication Technology or related, with above average score and fulﬁlling the requirements for admission to a PhD programme. Above average background in at least two of the subject areas mobile communications, RF technology, antennas and propagation, electromagnetic ﬁeld theory and mathematical modelling.

SCAREÂ— System Correctness under Adverse Conditions

funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG GRK 1765). These positions at the Department of Computing Science will be offered in three cohorts: five positions starting on 1 October 2012, five positions on 1 October 2013, and five positions on 1 October 2014. Each position is limited to three years.

The RTG SCARE addresses computerized systems that are placed in an environment with which they cooperate. System correctness means that the cooperation between environment and system satisfies desired behavioural properties. SCARE systematically investigates the problem of system correctness under adverse, only partially predictable conditions which can influence the behaviour of the system, the system context, and the assumptions made for verifying correctness. The RTG will consider three aspects of adverse conditions, both individually and in their combination:

A limited knowledge,
B unpredictable behaviour,
C changing system environment and system structure.

The main aim of SCARE is research into notions of system correctness that guarantee robustness of the system behaviour under such adverse conditions.

Supervision in the research training group is based on the four elements of "Levelling", helping doctoral candidates from diverse backgrounds to rapidly blend into the research environment, "Bonding", aiming at establishing a local and global research network, "Progress", which amounts to supervision and active support, and "Exchange", guaranteeing visibility in the scientific community. Together, these elements will support the doctoral candidates in becoming independent researchers who will be able to investigate complex problems autonomously and to effectively interact with the international research community.

Successful applicants for the research programme should have an excellent Master's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, fluency in English, and a strong interest in exploring new notions of system correctness in a cooperative research environment.

Intl Summer School "The socio-economic dimension of conflict re

The Center for Conflict Studies (CCS) at the University of Marburg (Germany) is delighted to announce the Call for Applications for the international summer school "The Socio-Economic Dimension of Conflict Resolution". The CCS has been awarded a grant by the German Academic
Exchange Service (DAAD) to organize the summer school in collaboration with the Russian-Tajik Slavonic University (RTSU) and the DAAD in Dushanbe. The summer school will take place at RTSU from August 20-26, 2012.

The objectives of the summer school are fourfold: First, the program aims at acquainting students with basic qualitative methods of conflict analysis including interview techniques as well as discourse and content analysis. Second, students will receive training in approaches to conflict resolution and mediation. Third, students will be introduced to socio-economic dimensions of conflicts and conflict resolution. Finally, students will apply the acquired skills in practice through the analysis of specific conflicts in Central Asia.

The school aims at Master students or advanced students from Central Asian countries. In addition, a small number of Master or doctoral students from Germany can also apply. All applicants are asked to submit a CV of no more than two pages and a letter of motivation. The
letter of motivation must not exceed 700 words. JOURNAL/CFP- Beyond Brezhnevism - Cahiers du Monde russe Call for Papers for an upcoming special issue

Topic: Beyond Brezhnevism- -Growing Autonomy for Social Groups and Assimilation of Socialist Values

The image of "real Socialism" as an age of "stagnation" is gradually disappearing from studies of the Soviet Union. Indeed the clear cultural and social changes of the Brezhnev era are now part of a revised historiography. Despite the immobility of a political leadership unable to bring any serious reform to a drifting economic and social system, as political repression and ideological control slackened, Soviet citizens created, revived and occupied areas of autonomy.

At the same time, the socio-cultural processes that flourished in 1964-1982 had their own timing that preceded or extended beyond the precise dates of Brezhnev's rule: this concerns urban planning, the development of tourism, communications and media, and greater access to higher education. The study of these already reported phenomena deserves to be reviewed on the basis of the written and oral sources to which the researcher now has access. Similarly, the recent emphasis on the spread of cross-border patterns of consumption and thought and the increase in international exchanges places the geographical bounds of the Soviet Union in a wider context.

Cahiers du Monde Russe wishes to challenge "Brezhnevism" in two ways, as the incarnation of "stagnation" and as a strictly delineated temporal and spatial framework, unsuited to the study of the profound social, cultural and economic changes that prepared the way for the upheavals of the late 1980s and the collapse of the USSR.

Yahoo! Labs in Barcelona (Spain) has several openings for postdoc positions in data mining, information retrieval, HCI, and visualization with emphasis in the areas of social-network analysis and topic modeling, within the context of EU-funded projects. Yahoo! Labs is pioneering the new sciences underlying the web. As the center of scientific excellence for Yahoo!, Yahoo! Labs delivers both fundamental and applied scientific leadership through published research and new technologies powering the company's products.

Selected candidates will be working together with our scientists to develop novel algorithms for processing and mining extremely large amounts of data coming from user action logs and social networks. Successful candidates should have demonstrated their ability to perform high-quality original research in the areas of data mining, social-network and social-media analysis, information- propagation analysis, social-influence analysis, and/or topic modeling. Candidates
should also be proficient in developing proof-of-concept prototypes and experimenting with novel algorithms in a variety of platforms for processing very large data sets.

Required skills/qualifications:

* Ph.D. degree in Computer Science;
* Proficiency in both written and spoken English;
* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills;
* Proven ability to perform high-quality original research in any of the areas above (data mining, information retrieval, HCI, visualization) both independently and as a member of a team;
* Experience in research and/or development of applications in the areas of social networks and/or social media and/or topic modeling;
* Proven ability to develop proof-of-concept prototypes for experimenting with novel algorithms;
* Experience in distributed processing of large data sets (Hadoop/Pig a plus)
* Proficiency in at least one of Python, Perl, C/C++, Java;
* Experience with UNIX systems;

Phd Scholarship in Biogeochemistry and Hydrogeology

PhD Scholarships in Australia (Biogeochemistry and Hydrology) The Centre for Coastal Biogeochemistry at Southern Cross University (Lismore, Australia) is offering two PhD scholarships valued at $23,000 per year. The scholarships are tax free to both Australian and international students. Tuition and fees will be waived.

The two projects should focus on the following:
1) Influence of submarine groundwater discharge on carbon cycling in coastal waters, supervised by Dr. Isaac Santos
2) Investigating the transformation and fate of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in coastal sediments using stable isotope tracers, supervised by Dr Joanne Oakes.

Field sites for PhD projects can be negotiated, and include hydrothermal fields, sand beaches, mangroves, coastal embayments, estuaries, and coral reefs. Shortlisted candidates will be requested to prepare a 2-page research proposal and to perform a telephone interview. Starting dates can be negotiated, but ideally the candidates should start in August 2012. Candidates from non-English speaking countries may be required to demonstrate English language proficiency. International cooperation will be encouraged.

The Australian Research Council recently ranked the geochemistry group at SCU the highest rank of 5 for “outstanding performance well above world standards”. The Australian education system differs from the American system in that no course work is required for PhD students, allowing the student to engage in full time research from the start. Our Centre is equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation, has full technical support, and has well-funded projects all over Australia and overseas.

For applications, please email your preferred supervisor with a two-page CV by 30 May. Applicants may include up to two supporting scientific documents (i.e., conference abstract, thesis, technical report, etc) that demonstrate relevant research experience.
