Call for Papers
The Institute for Development and Peace (Institut für Entwicklung und Frieden – INEF
http://inef. uni-due.de/ page/?lang= en ), University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, will organize four panels at the 2008 Global Conference of the International Peace Research Organization (IPRA), to be held 15-19 July 2008, in Leuven, Belgium (http://www.ipra2008 .org/).
Concurrent with the Conference’s theme “Building Sustainable Development: Enacting Peace and Devel-opment” , the panels will focus on issues connecting the fields of peace and development. Four specific themes are presented in more detail below.
Please send an abstract of 200-250 words no later than 15 February 2008 to Tome Sandevski (tome.sandevski@ inef.uni- due.de). Please indicate for which panel you would like to have your abstract considered and include your institutional affiliation and full contact information (postal and email address, phone, fax) in your submission. We aim to inform you about our decision by 29 February 2008. Academics from developing countries are particularly encouraged to apply.
Thanks to the support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, partial or full funding for travel and accomodation expenses can be provided.

Panel 1: The Internal Dynamics of Hybrid Political Orders
In most developing societies, the boundaries between the polity, the economy and societal institutions are blurred. This interpenetration of social spheres leads to the emergence of hybrid political orders which en-compass the formal state apparatus, informal institutions, ‚civil society’ groups as well as economic actors. These hybrid orders are characterized by a plurality of overlapping rule systems which has a profound ef-fect on politics and policies in these societies. However, at present very little is known about these orders’ internal dynamics. This lacuna includes such basic questions as: How do these orders form and how do they evolve? How do hybrid orders relate to external actors as well as broader processes of social change such as globalization, urbanization and modernization? And how do hybrid political orders influence proc-esses of state-building and state failure?
Panel 2: Donors’ Responses to Hybrid Political Orders
Hybrid political orders (see panel #1) are not only governed by a particular internal logic, their relationship to development and peace is ambiguous. While such orders can sometimes act as stabilizing institutions, development policy has a hard time coming to grips with these political formations. The questions that this panel will address are mostly empirical in nature: How have donors reacted to hybrid political orders? Have they adapted, broken off contact or are they turning a blind eye to these institutions? The panel particularly welcomes contributions that analyse the micro-level interaction between donor and recipient actors.
Panel 3: The Role of Youth in Development and Peace-Building
The category of youth is closely related to cultural definitions and to processes of social change. In the discussions of international donors and NGOs children and youth have traditionally been perceived as vic-tims (of maldevelopment as well as of violence), while the current debate focuses on youth as a security problem (e.g. youth bulges, former child soldiers). But for most developing societies youth represents an important potential for development. The challenge for national governments as well as international donors is how youth can be integrated into development and peace-building projects in spite of social stratification and limited economic prospects. What role does youth play in different social spheres and what are instru-ments for youth empowerment? Single case studies, comparative research and policy-oriented contribu-tions are equally welcome.
Panel 4: The Role of Regional Organizations in Conflict Resolution
In spite of great hopes being placed in them, regional organizations have yet to fully actualize their potential when it comes to the prevention and resolution of conflicts. Although there has been some recent progress (notably within the African Union), regional organizations have usually found themselves unable to deci-sively impact both inter-state and intra-state conflicts. And despite the widespread introduction of early warning mechanisms, preventive action still eludes regional organizations. The aim of this panel is to criti-cally examine the role of regional organizations in different crises with the intention of addressing the broader question whether these organizations do have the potential to prevent and resolve conflicts, or whether such aspirations will remain a pipe dream.

BIMUN - EDUCATION FOR THE WORLD OF DIPLOMACY !
Dear friends,
We are glad to inform you that the United Nations Association of Serbia is organizing for the fifth time in a row the ”BELGRADE INTERNATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS - BIMUN” in Belgrade from 27 to 30 March 2008. Participants at the BIMUN are social science students from all over the world.
BIMUN gives students a possibility to learn more about current international issues and ways to resolve them within the UN system, to apply basic diplomatic curtesy and also contribudes to development of their personal skills (public speaking, nagotiations, debating and compromise).
In this educational exercise, students take over roles of UN diplomats, represent different countries and discuss certain topics, which are on the agenda. Participants, as delegates, elaborate strategy, prepare resolutions, negotiate and resolve conflicts, following the UN procedure. ''BIMUN 2008'' will be an opportunity for new experiences, diplomatic debates and young leaders networking. The working language of the conference will be English.
”Belgrade International Model UN – BIMUN 2008” will feature comprehensive simulations of the following UN bodies, with focus on real-life agenda items:

"The Risk of Nuclear Proliferation: Situation in Iran"

Procesul de selectie:
Selectia va fi realizata in prima instanta de catre Ministerul Educatiei si Cercetarii din Romania impreuna cu City College. Din prima etapa de selectie vor fi alesi 3 candidati pentru fiecare bursa. Apoi urmeaza a doua etapa de selectie,
realizata in exclusivitate de City College care va anunta beneficiarii finali ai burselor.
Modalitatea de aplicare si termen de inscriere
Ultima data de aplicare este 30 iunie 2008. Dosarul de aplicare pentru bursa va fi depus la Centru National de Burse din Romania.

3rd Changing Europe Summer School
The topic: The political systems, economies and societies of post-socialist Central and Eastern European countries have been affected by outside influences more than in any preceding wave of democratization in this ever-shrinking world. Most Central European states quickly and successfully set course for EU and NATO membership, which had major implications for the transformation of their polities, societies and economies. States and societies on the territory of the former Soviet Union and in the Balkans had much bumpier trajectories, resulting in a broad spectrum of hybrid political regimes with varying degrees of global integration.
As globalization is a two-way street, the Changing Europe Summer School 2008 will focus on two sets of issues: The first evolves around the influence of external impulses on the transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe in the era of ongoing globalization. The second addresses the ways in which political systems, societies and economies have reacted (and continue to react) to these external forces and how they integrate themselves into the global environment.
The Summer School: Each year the Changing Europe Summer school brings together about 30 young academics (i.e. mainly doctoral students from disciplines like political science, economics, sociology, social anthropology, law and geography) working on issues related to countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Participation in the Summer School gives them a chance to present and discuss their research projects and to become better integrated into the academic community. The core of the Summer School consists of the presentation of doctoral research projects and their discussion with senior researchers of international repute in their respective fields. In addition, there will be several sessions with experts on how to acquire funding, obtain access to information, get published and make oneself heard by decision-makers. The sessions will be framed by lectures and excursions as well as other activities designed to give participants the opportunity to socialize and establish contacts. Selected contributions to the Summer School will be published in an edited volume. The participants will be integrated into an alumni network.
Paper proposals: Paper proposals must be based on original research and may not exceed 1000 words. They must be drafted in English and must connect an empirical question with a theoretical approach and concept in order to be accepted. Comparative approaches (inter- as well as intra-regional) are encouraged. An international review panel will assess the papers for the conference in an anonymous review process. 3rd Changing Europe Summer School
The topic: The political systems, economies and societies of post-socialist Central and Eastern European countries have been affected by outside influences more than in any preceding wave of democratization in this ever-shrinking world. Most Central European states quickly and successfully set course for EU and NATO membership, which had major implications for the transformation of their polities, societies and economies. States and societies on the territory of the former Soviet Union and in the Balkans had much bumpier trajectories, resulting in a broad spectrum of hybrid political regimes with varying degrees of global integration.
As globalization is a two-way street, the Changing Europe Summer School 2008 will focus on two sets of issues: The first evolves around the influence of external impulses on the transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe in the era of ongoing globalization. The second addresses the ways in which political systems, societies and economies have reacted (and continue to react) to these external forces and how they integrate themselves into the global environment.
The Summer School: Each year the Changing Europe Summer school brings together about 30 young academics (i.e. mainly doctoral students from disciplines like political science, economics, sociology, social anthropology, law and geography) working on issues related to countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Participation in the Summer School gives them a chance to present and discuss their research projects and to become better integrated into the academic community. The core of the Summer School consists of the presentation of doctoral research projects and their discussion with senior researchers of international repute in their respective fields. In addition, there will be several sessions with experts on how to acquire funding, obtain access to information, get published and make oneself heard by decision-makers. The sessions will be framed by lectures and excursions as well as other activities designed to give participants the opportunity to socialize and establish contacts. Selected contributions to the Summer School will be published in an edited volume. The participants will be integrated into an alumni network.
Paper proposals: Paper proposals must be based on original research and may not exceed 1000 words. They must be drafted in English and must connect an empirical question with a theoretical approach and concept in order to be accepted. Comparative approaches (inter- as well as intra-regional) are encouraged. An international review panel will assess the papers for the conference in an anonymous review process. The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme funded under a Japan Funds-in-Trust project will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity building and research activities in the following areas which were of particular importance to Mr Keizo Obuchi:

3. Information and Communication Technologies
4. Peaceful conflict resolution.
No other research topics will be considered.
Applicants, a maximum of TWO from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria:
1. Candidates under this Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship.
2. Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return.
3. Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1968 will not be considered under the Programme.
4. The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative.
5. Priority attention will be given to: women; candidates from least developed countries (LDCs); Palestinian researchers
6. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research.
7. Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally.
Duration of proposed research: minimum: 3 months; maximum: 9 months.
The Fellowships financed by Japan and administered by UNESCO will consist of the following:

This research program seeks to rethink key concepts and premises that link and divide Europe and the Middle East. The project draws on the international expertise of scholars in and outside of Germany and is embedded in university and extra-university research institutions in Berlin. 'Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe' supports historical-critical philology, rigorous engagement with the literatures of the Middle East and their histories, the social history of cities and the study of Middle Eastern political and philosophical thought (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and secular) as central fields of research not only for area or cultural studies, but also for European intellectual history and other academic disciplines. The program explores modernity as a historical space and conceptual frame.
The program puts forward three programmatic ideas:
1) supporting research that demonstrates the rich and complex historical legacies and entanglements between Europe and the Middle East;
2) reexamining genealogical notions of mythical 'beginnings', 'origins', and 'purity' in relation to culture and society;
3) rethinking key concepts of a shared modernity in light of contemporary cultural, social, and political entanglements that supersede identity discourses as well as national, cultural or regional canons and epistemologies that were established in the nineteenth century.

2008 Eiffel Scholarship Programme for Master and PhD

Eiffel excellence scholarships are awarded to high-achieving overseas students to whom French centres of higher education would like to offer a place on a Master’s or PhD course. The courses taken by these students in France ultimately target positions of responsibility in the public or private sector, rather than careers in teaching or research.
The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs gives priority to candidates from emerging countries (starting with Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and new members of the European Union), though the PhD scholarships also address students from industrialized countries.
Eiffel grants cover the following subject areas:
1. Engineering sciences for the Master’s course, and sciences in a broader sense for the PhD course (engineering sciences, exact sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry) life sciences, nano- and bio-technologies, environment sciences, and information & communication sciences).
2. Economics and management.
3. Law and political science.
Academic levels covered by the Eiffel programme
French centres of higher education putting forward candidates for Eiffel scholarships undertake to enrol successful applicants on one of the following types of course:
1. Master’s course
2. PhD course co-tutored or co-managed with partner higher education centre in the student’s country of origin
Candidates must not be aged over 30 (in the year of selection) for a Master’s scholarship or over 35 for a PhD scholarship.
Ineligibility factors
- Holders of other French government grants (including welfare coverage grants),
- Previous applicants for Eiffel grants, even in a different subject,
- Applicants not presented by a French centre (i.e. applications by students themselves, or submitted by a non-French centre)
- Duplicate applications, i.e. students proposed by more than one French centre.
Amount of Eiffel scholarship
The Eiffel (1) programme does not cover tuition fees, though the higher education centres concerned are invited to apply the best possible financial conditions to Eiffel scholarship-holders.
Enrolment fees at state-run higher education centres are waived for students on French government scholarship programmes such as this.
Master’s courses: Eiffel scholarship-holders on Master’s courses receive a monthly allowance of EUR1,181. In addition, the programme meets various expenses including return travel, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders might also be eligible for additional accommodation allowance.
PhD courses: Eiffel scholarship-holders on PhD courses receive a monthly allowance of EUR1,400. In addition, the programme meets various expenses including return travel, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders might also be eligible for additional accommodation allowance.

The courses taken by these students in France ultimately target positions of responsibility in the public or private sector, rather than careers in teaching or research.
The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs gives priority to candidates from emerging countries (starting with Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and new members of the European Union), though the PhD scholarships also address students from industrialized countries.
Eiffel grants cover the following subject areas:
1. Engineering sciences for the Master’s course, and sciences in a broader sense for the PhD course (engineering sciences, exact sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry) life sciences, nano- and bio-technologies, environment sciences, and information & communication sciences).
2. Economics and management.
3. Law and political science.
Academic levels covered by the Eiffel programme
French centres of higher education putting forward candidates for Eiffel scholarships undertake to enrol successful applicants on one of the following types of course:
1. Master’s course
2. PhD course co-tutored or co-managed with partner higher education centre in the student’s country of origin
Candidates must not be aged over 30 (in the year of selection) for a Master’s scholarship or over 35 for a PhD scholarship.
Ineligibility factors
- Holders of other French government grants (including welfare coverage grants),
- Previous applicants for Eiffel grants, even in a different subject,
- Applicants not presented by a French centre (i.e. applications by students themselves, or submitted by a non-French centre)
- Duplicate applications, i.e. students proposed by more than one French centre.
Amount of Eiffel scholarship
The Eiffel (1) programme does not cover tuition fees, though the higher education centres concerned are invited to apply the best possible financial conditions to Eiffel scholarship-holders.
Enrolment fees at state-run higher education centres are waived for students on French government scholarship programmes such as this.
Master’s courses: Eiffel scholarship-holders on Master’s courses receive a monthly allowance of EUR1,181. In addition, the programme meets various expenses including return travel, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders might also be eligible for additional accommodation allowance.
PhD courses: Eiffel scholarship-holders on PhD courses receive a monthly allowance of EUR1,400. In addition, the programme meets various expenses including return travel, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders might also be eligible for additional accommodation allowance.

Recent studies of emotions have pointed to a particular role of pain in shaping identities and narratives. Regardless of their disciplinary affiliations, scholars seem to agree that verbal expressions of pain first of all draw attention to the suffering individual instead of describing the actual experience of pain. Narratives of suffering provide the individual with a powerful symbolic presence. They create
emotionally charged communities. Such narratives also lay the foundation for larger social, political or moral claims.
This link between pain, representation, and subjectivity is well documented in Slavic cultures, where vivid depictions of suffering saturate popular and elite cultures alike. As the young Mayakovski put it, "I am with pain, everywhere." However, this conference wants to move beyond the documenting of omnipresence of pain in Slavic cultures. Instead, we want to explore how social, linguistic, aesthetic, moral, gender, etc. conventions determine specific contents of pain in
different historical periods and different geographical locations. What are the symbolic contexts in which experiences of pain are recognized? To what extent do available cultural practices constrain or ecourage certain narrative versions of pain? What gets lost in the process of translating traumatic experience into narratives of suffering? How is the phenomenon of pain used to galvanize individual and group identities, to justify social values, to motivate artistic projects or,
in some cases, to undermine (or generate) political movements? In short, what are those discourses through which Slavic cultures acquire and express their concepts of pain?
We seek to address these problems by bringing together an interdisciplinary and international group of people interested in exploring the value of pain in such diverse fields as history, literature, film, music, performing arts, everyday life, religion, ideology, politics, law, psychology, and history of medicine. We invite
papers to reflect upon the diverse vocabulary of expressions of pain that have been constructed across Slavic space and time. We are also interested in comparative studies that could place Slavic narratives of suffering in larger cultural, historical, or geographical contexts. We especially encourage submissions that approach concrete textual or ethnographic materials in a theoretically informed way, without reiterating the alleged masochistic fascination of Slavic cultures with pain and suffering.

The Centre for Telecommunications Value-chain Research (CTVR) invites applications for Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers to work in the Emerging Networks group, on distributed, optical and wireless network architectures.
These research positions will be funded from a variety of sources and will involve close collaboration with our industrial partners.
CTVR is a multi-disciplinary research institution incorporating many Irish Universities together with a carefully chosen set of industrial partners to work on those engineering and scientific challenges that will make the most difference to the telecommunications networks of the future. The Emerging Network group is based in the Trinity College University , in Dublin , and focuses on the form of future networks in terms of protocols, control, management, mobility handling, routing and other architectural issues.
*The research positions are available in the following areas:*
- Interdomain optical path provisioning, focusing on distributed algorithms, protocols and network policies. Game theory seems a particularly suitable approach to maximize operators' benefits in highly competitive environment such as multi-domain networking.
- Multi-layer path provisioning. This research area aims at finding optimal solutions to path provisioning and engineering at the electronic and optical layers. Joint optimization of both layers is crucial for maximum exploitation of network resources.
- Impairment-aware distributed algorithms for route and wavelength selection in optical networks. Deployment of dynamically transparent optical networks is currently limited by the low reconfiguration capabilities of the optical transport layer. This research area aims at minimizing or overcoming the signal impairments that phenomena like PMD, path loss and chromatic dispersion generate on optical signals.
- Development of software-based routers, based on novel algorithms and network protocols and on existing open-source routers (e.g., QUAGGA, XORP, Click modular router).
- Ad-hoc optical networks. This novel research area aims at applying ideas derived from wireless ad-hoc networks to the optical provisioning domain, to enhance the reconfiguration capabilities of optical networks, increasing resiliency and fault recovery. In addition, as data rates constantly increase in access networks, an ad-hoc plug-and-play approach to optical networking will facilitate the deployment of bandwidth at the network edge.
- Identity management. This research area will focus on the issue of how entities such as people, machines etc, will be identified in a future Internet. Design issue will involve: form of identifiers, naming authorities, security, etc.
- Efficient Video-Content delivery using Overlay Networks. In recent years, new applications such as Youtube and on-demand TV (e.g., Jost) have become the single major driver of traffic in the Internet. This project will explore the trade-offs between centralized control and the ability to harness user resources to solve the distribution problem in both an enterprise and public Internet context.
Responsibilities for the positions include conducting research in the above fields, contribute to the drafting and submitting of papers to top international academic conference and journals, and contribute to the overall activities of the research team.
Post-doctoral applicants are required to have a PhD in Applied Mathematics, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a related field. PhD applicants are required to have a M.Sc. degree on a relevant field.
Other requirements include good knowledge of communication networks, sound analytical skills and programming skills (e.g. C/C++, Matlab), fluency in English and effective written and verbal communication skills.
The compensation perceived will depend on the position covered and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience to date.

Applications are invited for a number of PhD studentships in the Department of Mathematics, University of Bristol, UK. The Department of Mathematics covers a range of applied mathematics, pure mathematics and statistics research. It has an international reputation for excellence in each of these areas and in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise it was awarded ratings of 5*A for Applied Mathematics, 5B for Pure Mathematics and 5*A for Statistics.
The department offers a number of studentships up to a maximum of 3.5 year studentships for UK and EU PhD students who have been residents in the UK for 3 years prior to application, and fees-only funding for other EU students. The studentships include a tax-free stipend of £12,600 per year. Other sources of funding including the Overseas Research Studentship and Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award are available to non-EU students. In particular, the Statistics group offer 2 studentships with 4 years of funding provided by the SuSTaIN (Statistics underpinning Science, Technology and Industry) initiative, to cover a 1 year MRes course followed by a 3 year PhD degree with a supplement of £1500 per year.

Study is based around research themes within each group. The Applied Mathematics group covers research in dynamic systems, fluid dynamics, quantum chaos, quantum information and random matrix theory. The Pure Mathematics group contributes to research in analysis and partial differential equations, number theory, non-commutative geometry and topology, representation theory, set theory and logic. The research themes in the Statistics group include applied probability, Bayesian modelling and analysis, behavioural Biology, Monte Carlo, multiscale methods,
nonparametric regression, optimisation under uncertainty, statistical bioinformatics, statistical signal processing, and time series.

It has an international reputation for excellence in each of these areas and in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise it was awarded ratings of 5*A for Applied Mathematics, 5B for Pure Mathematics and 5*A for Statistics.
The department offers a number of studentships up to a maximum of 3.5 year studentships for UK and EU PhD students who have been residents in the UK for 3 years prior to application, and fees-only funding for other EU students. The studentships include a tax-free stipend of £12,600 per year. Other sources of funding including the Overseas Research Studentship and Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award are available to non-EU students. In particular, the Statistics group offer 2 studentships with 4 years of funding provided by the SuSTaIN (Statistics underpinning Science, Technology and Industry) initiative, to cover a 1 year MRes course followed by a 3 year PhD degree with a supplement of £1500 per year.
The studentships will be restricted to students of a high quality - the normal entry requirement is the equivalent of a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours at undergraduate level.
Study is based around research themes within each group. The Applied Mathematics group covers research in dynamic systems, fluid dynamics, quantum chaos, quantum information and random matrix theory. The Pure Mathematics group contributes to research in analysis and partial differential equations, number theory, non-commutative geometry and topology, representation theory, set theory and logic. The research themes in the Statistics group include applied probability, Bayesian modelling and analysis, behavioural Biology, Monte Carlo, multiscale methods,
nonparametric regression, optimisation under uncertainty, statistical bioinformatics, statistical signal processing, and time series.

The Clinical Sciences Research Institute, at Warwick Medical School, is pleased to announce the offer of a PhD research scholarship into understanding molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Ideally you will be able to commence in February 2008.
To date the most common form of type 2 diabetes is one that is related to obesity. Yet, we know little about what causes insulin resistance in the obese or why obesity is associated with sub-clinical inflammation. At present, there is a prevalent view - regarding obesity and its development - that people eat too much of the wrong foods, that they undertake too little physical activity and this programs the genetically susceptible for a lifetime of insulin resistance. In reality, while this may be apparent, there is still very little known about how hyperinsulinaemia/ insulin resistance may mediate the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and its
complications. These studies will enhance our understanding of the pathogenesis of obesity associated type 2 diabetes, as well as the mechanisms for the development of insulin resistance and sub-clinical inflammation associated with this state. In addition, understanding the mechanisms involved in the development of diabetes may highlight a better way to manage those in the pre-diabetic phase.

Le Comité d'organisation sélectionnera, suite au concours des dossiers,
25 étudiants des universités moldaves qui bénéficieront de la formation et la section moldave de l'Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie proposera une liste de 10 à 15 parlementaires et agents parlementaires qui participeront à la formation et aux discussions avec les étudiants.**
*A la fin de la formation :*
a. Les étudiants seront évalués sur la base d'un essai qu'ils rédigeront sur l'un des thèmes proposés durant la formation.
b. Les étudiants ayant suivi au moins 75% de la formation et ayant passé l'évaluation recevront un diplôme signé par l'UCL, l'UEM et l'Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie.

The ESF-UB Conference on Systems Biology attempts to give a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in the different aspects that are included in systems biology. Thus we will cover network analysis, network modeling, -omics approaches in Systems Biology, relationship between Systems Biology and disease and briefly touch the future avenue of Synthetic Biology. The conference will be organized around senior speakers presenting the advances in their fields and junior talks selected from abstracts. Special emphasis will be given to poster sessions and open discussions to favor communication between senior and junior scientists. Post-doc in computational biomolecular NMR
The new Faculty of Science consists of six departments: Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Information and Computing Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics and Chemistry. The Faculty is home to 3500 students and nearly 2000 staff and is internationally renowned for the quality of its research.
The NMR Research Group (http://www.nmr. chem.uu.nl), headed by Prof. R. Boelens, is part of the Chemistry Department (http://www.chem.uu. nl) and belongs to the Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research (http://www.bijvoet- center.nl). The research within the NMR group is focused on the structure determination of proteins and protein complexes by high-resolution NMR spectroscopy and bio-computational modelling. The group has strong research lines on protein-DNA and protein-protein complexes in transcription and DNA repair and modelling of bio-molecular complexes. The NMR Research group also belongs to the European NMR Research Infrastructures
(www.eu-nmr. eu), providing experimental NMR access to European groups.
We are searching for a researcher (post-doc) in computational biomolecular NMR.
Job description
You will be part of a European team working toward the deployment and unification of the NMR computational infrastructure in system biology, a project funded under the 7th framework programme of the European Union (Contract no. 213010 – eNMR).
NMR plays an important role in life sciences (bio-NMR), and structural biology in particular, at both European and international levels. The main objective of this project is to optimize and extend the use of the NMR Research Infrastructures of EU-NMR through the implementation of an e-Infrastructure in order to provide the European bio-NMR user community with a platform integrating and streamlining the computational approaches necessary for bio-NMR data analysis (e-NMR). The e-NMR infrastructure will be based on the Grid infrastructure.
For this, you will work on the development of a uniformed and integrated e-NMR platform that will form the core of the e-NMR infrastructure. The work will be carried in close collaboration with our European partners.
Qualifications
You should have a Ph.D. degree in chemistry, physics, bioinformatics, computational biology or a related field. You should possess a strong research background in the computational aspects of biomolecular NMR and structure calculations, experience with Linux and programming skills, and are expected to show initiative and be able to work independently.
Terms of employment
We offer initially a position for two years with a possible extension by one year. Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience and ranges from €2740.- to €3597.- gross per month (salary scale 10). The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% per year and a year-end bonus of 3% per year. We also offer a pension scheme. Employment conditions are according to the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.

Framing Struggles: Critical Approaches to Anthropology and Sociology

Until recently, most social research has focused on political and economic struggles to the detriment of understanding cultural struggles. But an undue focus on culture tends to ignore the contested nature of economic and political interactions that provide the structural underpinnings to cultural form and content. Anthropology can contribute equally to understanding frames of struggles, and framing the relevant problematic that needs to be exposed to public scrutiny, while sociology is able to situate and analyse these struggles in a broader perspective through its focus on macro-micro interactions.
The main purpose of this trans-disciplinary conference is to investigate how cultural, political, and economic struggles are framed, both by actors and scholars. By framing struggles we mean the ways in which participants themselves construe and delimit the meanings of their actions in an era of accelerating global changes, as well as the manner in which scholars and researchers select their own frames of reference to make sense of these social upheavals. Regarding social phenomena in an integrated and multifaceted persepective, the conference will reflect on and mediate between broad, distant, and sometimes seemingly incompatible research fields and approaches e.g., religious studies, studies of popular culture, as well as social movement studies and the scholarship on migration and informal economy.
Concentrating on a variety of issues concerning struggles, we seek to encourage critical ethnographic/ sociological research enriched by theoretical grounding. The conference will tackle the issue of framing struggles from four main perspectives in the following panels (also see the more detailed descriptions further down):
Panel I: Borders, Economy, Conflict
Panel II: Approaching Religious Modernities: Constructions, Contestations, Mobilizations
Panel III: Performing and Representing Culture, Ethnicity and Gender
Panel IV: Activism in (Post-)Socialist Contexts
The conference will take place 13-14 June 2008, at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. Each applicant should submit an (max. 250 words) and abstractintroductio n (max. 100 words) of their academic affiliation/ research topic/general research interests . The deadline for submissions of the abstracts is the 1 February 2008. Please send to: framing.struggles@ gmail.com. (contact person Mariya Ivancheva)
As each panel will have a discussant - an invited scholars from the relevant field, the approved - candidates will have to submit a full-length paper by the 01 st of May 2008. This is a strict deadline. Conference papers will be made available to all participants in advance.
The organizers will be able to provide partial reimbursement of travel expenses and accommodation at a hostel in central Budapest to a number of panel participants. A possibility exists that some participants be hosted by students from the department – please indicate if you are interested in such option.
Participants are also requested to state whether they would need a visa for Hungary so that organizers can assist in the visa process.
Description of Panels
Panel I: Borders, Economy, Conflict
This panel seeks to scrutinize from a critical and trans-disciplinary perspective the features of borders: physical and symbolic, fixed and transgressed. How they separate different categories of actors, while framing and enforcing their social roles and identities. However economic, political, and cultural borders need not necessarily imply "bounded-ness" . What we aim to do is to pinpoint the fluidity, volatility, and mutability of the concept of 'borders'. Furthermore, we seek to discuss how different sorts of conflict reinforce, but also displace borders in various everyday contexts and the manner in which the micro-macro actors involved negotiate, interpret, transgress, restate and define them through their practices, interactions, and collisions.
The panel invites papers and visual materials that actively engage with issues of borders, border-crossing economies, and conflict. Contributions should include, but are not necessarily restricted to questions such as:
* Border sovereignty: empire(s) and nation-state( s)
* Border trouble: conflict and trade
* Micro actors vs. macro actors: border economies in a regional and global context
* Trafficking in humans, arms, and drugs
* Transnational (under)classes, informal economies, and host states
* International refugees and no-man's land(s)
* Economy without borders: transnational corporations, international organizations, and global capital
Panel II: Approaching Religious Modernities: Constructions, Contestations, Mobilizations
The persistence of religion within processes of social change all around the globe has called into question the secularization paradigm. Social scientists have been forced to reassess the theoretical and methodological categories for understanding the shifting location of religion in various societies and to be more open to the notion of multiple religious modernities. We are thus in a fruitful reflexive moment which could open new perspectives on religious phenomena entangled in social processes.
Our panel revolves around a number of issues which are still waiting for adequate theoretical and methodological approaches:
* The shifting location of religion within the public sphere in various social contexts
* Constructing and contesting boundaries between the 'religious' and the 'secular'
* Agents active in the processes of construction/ contestation (state, church, civil or religious associations, academia, new religious movements etc.)
* The framing of contemporary religious mobilization, both within world religions (Islam, Christianity, Hinduism etc.) and indigenous religions
* The emergence of new religious movements (e.g., global religions such as Pentecostalism)
* The impact of these movements on nation-states and traditional (historical) religions
* Socio-cultural and political strategies employed by religious actors in new contexts dominated by global media technologies and global horizons of consumption
Panel III: Performing and Representing Culture, Ethnicity and Gender
Performance has become a catch-all term to refer to the practices of agents as opposed to a prior focus on structure. In the new era of all kinds of promotion initiatives on behalf of agency, the belief that agents can resist or contest forces of domination has become widely celebrated. But this capacity can be called into question and is itself problematic. Indeed, such performances cannot be properly understood without taking into consideration their often mediated or represented character. Therefore, it is worth looking at the interplay between performances and representation, especially when these performances become embedded in global networks of production and circulation.
The main themes of this panel would include the following issues:
* Markets and media as a facilitators of cultural exchanges
* Struggles over cultural recognition through the staging of performances (arts, sports, tourist practices, etc.)
* Performing gender/race/ ethnicity
* The transformation of performances through processes of interaction and mediation
* Political institutions and the representation of cultural practices
* Ethnographic writing as representation and the framing paradigm: the responsibility of ethnographers
Panel IV: Activism in (Post-)Socialist Contexts
In societies where leftist themes of class, economic redistribution, and social justice have formed or still form the regime's dominant discourse, social movements trying to make demands related to such themes face complex problems, for example of avoiding cooptation or negative associations. This phenomenon can be seen in areas that have so far been the primary focus of social movement scholarship, i.e., with left-wing groups in Western social democracies, but it is equally present under social democratic regimes in the global south that have taken a "Third Way". And these complexities are all the more present among activist groups in societies with a history of repressive "really exiting" socialism, such as in Eastern Europe.
Our panel calls for papers that explore the complexity of political contention in such historically determined political contexts. These could address topics such as:
* Framing struggles of oppositional groups under repressive socialist regimes
* Activists strategies in a context dominated by social-democratic rhetoric
* (Dis)Continuities in performances and narratives of present and past dissent
* Strategies for alignment with trans-national activist campaigns
* Relevance of class-based claim making: past and presence
* Framing of collective and individual memory in processes of political transition
* Left- or right-wing protest: (un)civil society in post-socialist contexts

CfA: 3rd International Youth Media Summit, Belgrade, 20-27.8.2008
3rd International Youth Media Summit
invites organizations, schools and other institutions working with media to nominate two young media enthusiasts 15-22 years old to participate during August 20th to 27th in Belgrade, Serbia. The young participants must be candidates as Student Filmmaker and Student Diplomat.
This Summit will continue the work started in 2006, and will incorporate changes based on last year's feedback from the first (Los Angeles) and second (Sydney) Summit. One of these changes will be a greater emphasis on developing media production skills. invites organizations, schools and other institutions working with media to nominate two young media enthusiasts 15-22 years old to participate during August 20th to 27th in Belgrade, Serbia. The young participants must be candidates as Student Filmmaker and Student Diplomat.
This Summit will continue the work started in 2006, and will incorporate changes based on last year's feedback from the first (Los Angeles) and second (Sydney) Summit. One of these changes will be a greater emphasis on developing media production skills. The Graduate Center of Economic and Social Research at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) welcomes applications from highly qualified post-graduated students from all over the world to attend its structured doctoral training program in economics and social sciences.
Applicants must hold a MA degree or a diploma in economics, business and administration or social sciences in order to apply. Degrees from other related fields (such as civil engineering or statistics) also fulfil the admission requirements of the program. Job description
The research position is part of a large research project of a Dutch consortium on the restoration of a failing cellular stress response in aging people and specific patient groups, funded by IOP-Genomics, SenterNovem. The initial project, Helping Health: boosting the cellular defence system is now in its fourth year, while a follow-up 4-year project (with the available position) soon will start.
The consortium is a collaboration between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Chemistry (Cellular Protein Chemistry, Prof I. Braakman) of Utrecht University, Biomolecular Chemistry, Radboud University Nijmegen (Dr N.H. Lubsen) and Radiation and Stress Cell Biology, University of Groningen (Prof H.H. Kampinga). Additionally, a group of 8 industrial partners is involved.
In eukaryotes both the heat shock response and the unfolded protein response provide cells normally with an increased set of chaperones (heat shock proteins, Hsps) either to refold damaged cellular proteins or to target them for degradation by the proteasome system or for degradation through chaperone mediated autophagy. The latter pathway (including presentation via MHC class II molecules) plays a role in the induction of regulatory CD4 T cells reactive towards Hsps resulting in suppression of chronic inflammatory diseases. Given the role of the stress system in immunity, a relative deficiency of the stress response likely predisposes to chronic inflammatory disease.
At the division of Immunology we wish to elucidate the effect of enhancing the cellular stress response via induction of heat shock proteins within immunological relevant cell types and the subsequent effect on immune regulation and restoring immune homeostasis via regulatory T cell induction both in in vitro studies and in experimental models of chronic inflammation, such as arthritis and allergies.
