We are recruiting 14 PhD students/postdocs from various disciplines relevant for Systems Biology, including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics and theoretical biology.

Scientific excellence and enthusiasm will be the most important criteria for selection. Previous experience in Systems Biology or in research related to metabolism and/or ageing research is advantageous but not required.

Each of the 14 positions will be filled by either a postdoc or a PhD student. Postdoc positions will be for 3 years, PhD positions for 4 years. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Medical Centres / Dutch Universities. Successful applicants will be linked to specific projects, based on their own interests and the needs of the Centre.

Scope of the programme

Promotion of early stage researchers by awarding grants to highly qualified doctoral candidates realising an ambitious and innovative research project in one of the research areas of Ruhr-Universitä t Bochum. We also encourage all doctoral candidates to apply for a grant with an interdisciplinary research project. Start of Funding
The earliest start of funding will be March 1st, 2011.

Target Group
Graduates of all disciplines with a university degree qualifying for doctoral studies.

Requirements

•we expect your research project to make an important contribution to the corresponding research field (please outline this in a research exposé of 5 pages)

•clearly above average university degree

•uninterrupted studies (in case your total study period took more than 13 semester/ 6,5 years please explain in the application form)

•the start of your doctoral research project should not extend a period of time of 12 months with reference to the application deadline; we concede reasonable exceptions – please explain in the application form

•the university degree qualifying for doctoral studies has to be submitted at the latest until November 10, 2010 before the applications will be given to the faculties for further survey and expertise (Bachelor degree in case of fast track procedure plus information about grades already obtained in the master studies)

•candidates who have to fulfil additional requirements are also allowed to apply for a grant (first supervisor is responsible for compatibility between fulfilment of requirements and successful doctorate)

•candidates with a Bachelor degree involved in the fast track procedure are also allowed to apply for a grant; the official admission to doctoral studies from the faculty has to be submitted before the funding will start

•if you are already accepted as doctoral candidate by one of the faculties of Ruhr-University Bochum please enclose the official letter of acceptance from the faculty to your application

•if you are not accepted as doctoral candidate in one of the faculties of Ruhr-University Bochum we need a confirmation of the faculty that you will be accepted for doctoral studies in case of funding (from the faculty you will realise your research project) when you are invited to the second stage of the admission process

Application

Admission process and decision (2 stage process)

•a signed hardcopy of the application form with 2 letters of reference and all necessary documents have to be sent to the Central Coordination Office until October 31, 2010

•on the basis of the application the faculties and rapporteurs will suggest a preliminary ranking of the candidates

•on the basis of this preliminary ranking the Executive Board will invite the best candidates (January 2011) for a research colloquium

•research colloquium and the ensuing choice and recommendation by the rapporteurs will take place on February 7, 2011

•the final decision of the Executive Board will be made on February 9, 2011

Type of funding and amount

The grant amounts to 1.000,- Euro per month, children`s allowance amounts to 100,- Euro per month in addition.

Period of funding and of approval

Max. 36 months of funding are provided, whereas the period of first approval comprises 12 months. We offer 2 times for prolongation – each comprising 12 months - after having reviewed the progress reports.

Interruption

In case of illness the grant will be paid for further 6 weeks. In case of pregnancy the grant payment will be intermitted for a time period of 14 weeks (6 weeks before and 8 weeks after childbirth). The approval may be extended for this period of time respectively.

Secondary employment

During the funding period a short-time work of max. 6 hours per week is allowed

Duties of the grantee

•participation in the structured doctoral training programme of the Research School, follow the Individual Training and Supervision Plan of the Research School, take actively part in the Research School

•communicate immediately all important changes of the personal conditions as well as interruptions, changes or abandonment of the research project

•adequate use of the grant

11 PhD Fellowships from FEM, Italy

FEM - Research and Innovation Centre welcomes applications for 3-years research fellowships to support brilliant and highly motivated students to get the PhD title in the fields covered by the Centre.

We welcome applications from students of all countries. The official language of the programme is English. Applications can be sent from 13 September 2010.

General information

Eleven (11) scholarships are available for PhD research in the fields covered by the strategic research areas of our Centre: Environment and Natural Resources Area , Food Quality and Nutrition Area, Genomics and Crop Biology Area. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their curriculum and of the letters of reference. Letters sent by the applicants will not be considered (see below the form for the reference letter).

The grant is for three years and the expected start is February 2011 (Spring 2011 at the latest). The gross salary is 20.000 Euros per year. Students will also benefit of funding for travelling to our projects' partner institutions as the projects include a minimum period of 6-months-stay at the institution co-responsible for the single PhD project.

There is a general empowerment of the student choice when applying to our PhD research projects. Candidates can postulate for one to three specific projects (see list).

Selected candidates are awarded a 3-years fellowship. The scholarship can be additionally extended for up to 1 year, pending the approval of the FEM PhD Fellowships Committee.

Please note that the CRI issues a specific certificate of attendance, but candidates are asked to register at the doctoral school of the University partner of the project or of another University, in order to get the conferral of the PhD degree. The selected candidate has 1 year time from the start of the contract to register at the University doctoral school. If the candidate fails to register within the first year, the scholarship will be interrupted.

Candidates should hold a Master's degree or equivalent in fields relevant to the research projects (e.g. biology, chemistry, ecology, mathematics, environmental science…).

PhD Studentship in Epidemiology - Institute of Psychiatry

3 year project: Epidemiology of depression in diabetes: identifying risk factors, mechanisms, course and consequences.

Applications are invited to join the South London Diabetes Cohort study (SOUL-D) which is a prospective study examining the effects of depression in 2000 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. Depression is a common problem in diabetes and is associated with worse biomedical outcomes and increased mortality. Little is understood as to the risk factors for depression, what is its natural history and how biological, social and psychological factors interact to increase morbidity and mortality. You will be joining an established and friendly team in the Diabetes Research Group. You will be expected to develop additional hypotheses and appropriate methodologies to test them and contribute substantively towards data collection. This post suits a student who wishes a career in public health, medical informatics or clinical epidemiology.

Department of Psychological Medicine
The Department of Psychological Medicine focuses on the interface between psychiatry and medicine, psychiatry and occupation, psychiatry and the military, and psychiatry in different settings. The Head of the Department is Professor Simon Wessely, Chair of Psychological Medicine, who is also Vice Dean for Academic Psychiatry.

Entry requirements
Students must have a first class or high upper second honors degree and has or expected to have a Masters in epidemiology or a related discipline, including public health, mental health research.

Award type
The funding is from the National Institute of Health Research. The stipend is Â£16,500 (2010/11). Home/EU tuition fees will be met. There will be some funding for attendance to courses and conferences. The studentship will only fully fund applications who are eligible for home/EU fees. Overseas students would have to pay the difference (approximately Â£10,000).

PhD Studentship in Content - Centric Networking - University College London - Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

A PhD studentship in Content-Centric Networking (CCN) is available following the award of the recent European Union FP7 research project COMET - Content Mediator Architecture for Content-aware Networks. Funding is available to support overseas fees and stipend costs for a period of three years. We are looking to recruit a very high calibre PhD student to work in this emerging area of crucial importance. While the fundamental Internet protocols were originally designed to enable host-to-host communication, the vast majority of the current Internet interactions address user-content access (web, content delivery networks, video/photo sharing sites, etc.) or user-user communication (voice over IP, text-based chatting, etc.) As such, many researchers are currently considering evolutionary and revolutionary new architectures that will better support content-centric operation. Evolutionary approaches operate in the application layer and start from previous content-delivery architectures while revolutionary approaches examine radical new network architectures focus on user-content and also support user-user interaction. The emerging content-centric networking area has started receiving significant attention worldwide, with an underlying belief that it will lead to a CCN-oriented Future Internet.

This area brings together new naming architectures, dynamic content caching, anycast communication and better-than- best-effort quality of service among other constituents and potentially involves new protocol design, modelling, implementation and evaluation for the best support of efficient content access. The PhD student will work in the context of the COMET project team and will benefit from (and contribute to) relevant ongoing research.

The studentship available will be supported by UCL and the COMET project (Content Mediator Architecture for Content-aware Networks), see http://www.comet-project.org/COMET looks at both evolutionary and revolutionary approaches for future CCNs, starting from an overlay-based content mediation plane and examining potential approaches to realise this natively in network routers for the future Internet. As such, we are looking for candidates with excellent computer and/or electronic engineering background while strong analytical/mathemat ical skills will be a significant advantage. Experience of research, design/development and evaluation on networking, network management, ns-2 simulator, Linux, Java, C/C++ or similar would be desirable.

The studentship is available for three years and covers overseas tuition fees, plus a stipend at c. Â£15,000 pa (tax free), increasing with inflation. PhD Studentship in Modelling and Simulation of Coal-fired Supercritical Power Plants with CO2 Capture Ability (in the Context of Carbon Capture and Storage)

The Process Systems Engineering Group at School of Engineering, Cranfield University is a small vibrant multidisciplinary team. We are seeking to strengthen the research team in the area of modelling and simulation for energy processes such as power plants and CO2 capture technologies.

A project is funded by Biomass and Fossil Fuel Research Alliance (BF2RA). The project is aimed at investigating whether a supercritical power plant with post-combustion CO2 capture plant can satisfy the UK Grid requirements. The study will be carried out through modelling and simulation. A major power generation company in the UK will be closely involved.

The candidate sought is expected to have a strong interest in modelling and simulation for power generation systems and preferably with thermal energy or chemical engineering background. Good understanding of power generation principles and exposure to chemical engineering are desirable. The PhD studentship is expected to start from 1st Nov. 2010.

Academic Qualifications:

We are looking to recruit a very high calibre PhD student. The candidate must be able to demonstrate "a capability to undertake and benefit from research training through to completion, to the standard necessary to qualify for a PhD." Master Scholarship in Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering COSSE, Erasmus Mundus, Europe

The Erasmus Mundus programme “Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering” (COSSE) is a joint initiative of four European universities:

* KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
* Technical University of Berlin, Germany
* Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands
* Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen – Nürnberg, Germany

COSSE is a two-year master`s programme offering a double degree from two universities. The students enter one of the universities and continue the second year at one of the other institutions in another country. COSSE offers education of the highest international standard as well as a unique experience of meeting different European cultures, languages, climate and nature.

The EACEA (the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency) awards 7 to 10 category A scholarships and 6 to 8 category B scholarships per Erasmus Mundus Master`s programme.
Category A scholarships (non-EU member states) can be awarded to applicants from non-EU member states (but not to applicants from Norway, Liechtenstein or Iceland) UNLESS they have resided in a EU member state or in Norway, Liechtenstein or Iceland, for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years (by 31 January of the year of enrollment).

The category A scholarship includes:

Candidates who apply for an Erasmus Mundus Master Programme are at the same time considered for a scholarship nomination for this specific programme. The scholarships are awarded to the highest ranked candidates that fulfill the following scholarship conditions:

* The applicant has applied correctly, fulfilled the admission requirements and is nominated for a scholarship by the EM consortium.
* The applicant has not applied to more than three (3) Erasmus Mundus master`s programmes during one round of applications.
* The applicant should be able to spend his study period in at least two of the consortium partner countries. These two countries must be different from the country in which the applicant has obtained his/her last university degree; the mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility, neither can they take place in institutions outside the consortium.
* The applicant has not yet benefited from an EM master`s programme scholarship.
* The applicant should not benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.

Double Degree Master in Agricultural Water Management

The Agricultural Water Management for Enhanced Land and Water Productivity programme is jointly offered by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education
(UNESCO-IHE). The programme is a double degree programme.

Start next run: August 2011

Duration: 20 Months

Locations: AIT, Bangkok, Thailand and UNESCO-IHE, Delft, the Netherlands

Degree: Students who successfully complete this programme will be awarded two Master degrees: one from UNESCO-IHE and one from AIT. The degree students receive from UNESCO-IHE is the MSc degree in Water Science and Engineering, with a specialisation in Hydraulic Engineering - Agricultural Water Management for Enhanced Land and Water Productivity. AIT will award a degree in Water Engineering and Management.

Context

The population growth - particularly high in emerging and developing countries - means that these countries have an additional challenge to meet the Millennium Development Goal of food security by increasing production in their own territory, where possible combined with increased import of food.

Researches estimate that in the coming decades about 80-90% of the required increase will need to be realised on existing cultivated land, and about 10-20% on newly reclaimed land. For sustainable rural development, socio-economic and environmental aspects play crucial roles. It is also imperative that the modernisation of existing water management systems, including management transfers, remains a continued process.

Increased vulnerability of agriculture is due to flooding caused partly by the impacts of climate change, land subsidence and the escalating value of land because of the requirement of higher yields per hectare.

This necessitates the agricultural water management in such areas to be integrated with flood management and flood protection provisions. This Double Degree Master programme focuses on these issues.

Target group
The target group for this programme are young professionals working at ministries, authorities, river basin and water users associations, universities, research institutes, civil society organisations, and consultants dealing with or interested in the fields of planning, water
resources, agriculture, environment, public works, or related fields. Participant' s profile
Candidates with a bachelor's degree preferably in Civil, Agricultural, or Environmental Engineering or related fields are eligible to apply. In principle, candidates should have a minimum of three years of practical or research experience in water management (irrigation, drainage) or on integrated rural development/ management since graduation.

All applications are, however, considered on their individual merits. Since instruction and examinations are given in English, it is essential that participants have a good working knowledge of the English language. If there is any doubt about a candidate's proficiency in English, he or she will be required to take one of the internationally recognised language tests before confirmation of admittance.

Project : Study of O-GlcNAc glycosylation of FoxO1 the betapancreatic Cell

O-GlcNAc glycosylation of cytosolic and nuclear proteins constitutes a reversible post-translational modification, analogous to phosphorylation, which now appears as a major player in the regulation of cell signalling. This modification depends on glucose concentrations, allowing a regulation of protein activities according to the metabolic environment of the cell. O-GlcNAc modification could therefore participate in the deleterious effects associated with chronic
hyperglycaemia observed in diabetes (glucotoxicty).

The transcription factor FoxO1 plays a major role in important biological processes such as regulation of energy metabolism as well as cell proliferation and apoptosis, notably in pancreatic beta-cells.

Our team was the first to demonstrate that FoxO1 is O-Glycosylated, resulting in an increase in its transcriptional activity in liver cells. More recently, we have observed that FoxO1 is also O-glycosylated in pancreatic beta-cells. This mechanism could play a crucial role in pancreatic glucotoxicity, by inducing the apoptosis of the beta cells.

The objective of this project will be to determine the consequences of O-GlcNAc glycosylation of FoxO1 in pancreatic beta-cells. The project involves the use of betapancreatic cell lines, isolated pancreatic islets as well as inducible FoxO1 KO animals.

Job description
The successful candidate will do research to get a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. Our projects are focused on neuroimmunological repair strategies after brain and spinal cord injury with special emphasis on the use of anti-inflammatory mediators to enhance functional regeneration. The successful applicant will be working on “the use of stem cells as carriers of pro-regenerative factors after spinal cord injury”.

The project includes a rich spectrum of techniques such as cell and brain slice cultures, histology, molecular biology and behavior tests. We offer a highly interactive and well-equipped environment at the host. The BIOMED institute was established in 1999 and conducts biomedical research in two core areas: neuro-inflammation and the development of biosensors. Basic and
clinical research is organized in four strategic programs and much effort is put into academia-clinic interactions and academia-industry interactions for valorization of scientific findings. BIOMED employs approximately 120 persons including more than 35 PhD students.

The candidate will also participate in teaching macroscopic and microscopic neuroanatomy in the department of morphology for bachelor students in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She/He will also supervise master students in the School for Life Sciences. The UHasselt provides a high-performance and dynamic teaching concept based on supervised self studies in which researchers also play an active role.

Profile and diploma
We are looking for particularly motivated and ambitious scientists. Experience with stem cell culture and cell transfection will be greatly appreciated. critically in the context of the time at which they were written.

This course considers Shakespeare' s writing from his earliest works to the late plays. We will address concerns that persist throughout his work (power, gender, the ambivalence of language), as well as trying to become attentive to the ways in which his writing changes over time. A
particular focus will be the relationship between Shakespeare' s work and the world in which he lived and wrote. **

The programme includes museum and gallery visits, "punting" (a long boat a little like a gondola) on the river, international evenings, barbecues, talent contests, indoor ice-skating, English cream tea, and learning to play cricket and croquet.

There is a welcome reception, mid-course formal lunch in Oxford University, and farewell party with certificates. Every weekend there is a full day excursion outside Oxford. Destinations include London, Stratford, and Bath. There is also a midweek half day excursion or a visit to the theatre or a musical performance every other week.

Two PhD studentship in Computer Vision (University of Malaya)

Applications are invited for TWO PhD studentship to work in the Centre of Signal and Image Processing on two different UM funded project entitled "- i) Action recognition using local and dynamic descriptor"and "ii) Linguistic summarisation of human action using pictorial structure."

The post is on the university scale (MYR 18,000 – 28,800); and is open to all nationality. Placement for the post is according to experience and qualifications.
