PhD Studentship Atomic-scale Phenomena in Advanced Alloys University of Birmingham - School of Metallurgy and Materials

Applications are invited for a research studentships in the field of Physical Metallurgy, focussing on how solute atoms aff ect phase stability and dislocation motion in Ni-based superalloys, Co- based superalloys and ÃŸ-Ti alloys. This research will lead to the award of a PhD degree from the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham.

Research will focus on the use of ab initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) and hybrid atomic-scale techniques on a variety of technologically- important systems. The purpose of this work is to establish a relationship between the composition and the resulting mechanical properties of alloys. Occasional experimental work may be required to confirm conclusions.

Previous knowledge of the techniques involved is not necessary, but a strong background in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Physics or Mechanical Engineering is required. An interest in programming and numerical methods is preferred.

This PhD project is fully funded and covers a bursary (tax-free £13,600 per annum) and fees for 3 years and is available to UK/EU and overseas students.

Studentship Details
The CDT is dedicated to addressing the challenge of climate change and this should be reflected in the project undertaken by the successful student. Projects on offer this year include:

* Heat pumps and smart energy - a dynamic problem
This engineering/ physics project will investigate the detailed interplay between heat delivery via heat pumps, thermal mass of living spaces, other thermal storage options and the need to minimise demands on the grid.
* Multifunctional insulation materials
The majority of available insulation materials are selected only for their thermal performance. However, considerable cost reductions, energy savings and ease of operations may be achieved by the development of multifunctional insulation materials, selected for properties such as low toxicity, structural performance, ease of cutting to size, robustness for maintenance etc, in addition to thermal properties. This project will investigate the science and cost-effectiveness of multifunctional insulation materials.
* What does all this data mean?
Suited to a student with strong mathematical background, this project will employ probabilistic techniques to investigate the evidence for trends in energy consumption, and relation to physical effects.
* Development of practical tests for estimating heat losses from heat distribution systems in buildings in the field

Changes in building regulations over the last decade have meant that the annual demand for space heating is now less than that for water heating in typical new dwellings. This means that a significant proportion of heat losses associated with provision of hot water can no longer be assumed to be useful and may contribute to overheating of living spaces in Summer. In the same way that the co-heating test has been developed to enable the quanitification of fabric heat loss, there is a need for a series of tests to characterise heat losses from heat distribution and storage systems in buildings. The aim of this project is to develop, demonstrate and evaluate such tests for a variety of building types.

The above projects may evolve over the course of the MRes year, in the light of new developments. We will also consider student proposals.

This project, while fully funded by the Bournemouth University, will be executed in the framework of a large EU funded INFER project (www.infer.eu). You will be primarily based in the School of Design, Engineering & Computing at BU but will also be required to frequently visit and work at our commercial partners' labs overseas (REC in Poland and Evonik Industries in Germany). This gives you a unique opportunity to gain a diverse experience of both academic and commercial environments.

The studentship carries a basic remuneration of £13800 pa tax-free and a waiver of the full-time student fee. There are no restrictions on the nationality of the applicants and the selection will be based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.

The project is concerned with the incorporation of expert knowledge and performing of visual analytics through development of novel visualisation approaches and user interaction mechanisms for managing adaptive predictive systems. The studies will focus on efficient removal of complexity associated with selection and parameterisation of underlying algorithms and translation of the high level goals into effective solutions through GUI and visualisation enabled interactions. The development of the interfaces will be consulted with a diverse range of industrial users through envisaged extensive acceptability study. The research in this project will also link to and cover support for transparency of the predictive model decision making and effective visualisation of the overall system, results and decision making process itself.

Applicants should have a background in visualisation or human-computer interaction, demonstrated by a Masters/Bachelors project or industrial experience. You should have a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent in computer science, software engineering, mathematics, physics, engineering, statistics or a similar discipline. Candidates should also have very strong programming skills using Java and an excellent working knowledge of database systems such as SQL Server or Oracle. Proficiency in or at least a working knowledge of any or the combination of C, C++, C#, Matlab, OSGi, Eclipse, EIP, Apache Camel would be an advantage.

Project 4: Investigation into Enabling Technologies for the Digital Industrial Design.

Aim: Investigate how new design technologies, such as CAD, haptic modelling and rapid prototyping can influence the work of industrial designers and in particular the interface between industrial and engineering design.

Applicant: Strong ability in the use of IT based design technologies and the ability to communicate with both creative and technical designers.

Project 5 : Energy storage Systems for DC traction.

Aim: Investigate energy delivery and storage systems using super-capacitors and Li-on batteries for transport systems.

Applicant: Experience of Control systems, power electronics, microprocessors and Matlab/Simulink. It is expected that a significant amount of work will be carried out in France for which travel and living expenses will be paid.

Eligibility:

The student will be aﬃliated with the research team of the Department of Radio Frequency Technology and Electromagnetic Compatibility in the Engineering Faculty of RheinMain University.

Job description:
Development of concepts for tunable and reconﬁgurable multi-port (MIMO) antenna systems
suitable for integration into small form factor devices under consideration of novel functionality to be provided by antenna systems in cognitive radio. Speciﬁcation, in cooperation with the project partners, of requirements as well as of F and digital control interfaces and software algorithms for the antenna systems. Design, simulation and manufacturing of prototypes of such antenna systems, characterization by measurements and support for integration into the hardware demonstrator platforms pursued by the project partners.

Dissemination of research results in scientiﬁc publications and conferences. The student is given opportunity and will be encouraged to submit a PhD dissertation related to the subject area within our joint PhD programme executed in cooperation with a Technical University.

Qualiﬁcations:
Masters degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Information & Communication Technology or related, with above average score and fulﬁlling the requirements for admission to a PhD programme. Above average background in at least two of the subject areas mobile communications, RF technology, antennas and propagation, electromagnetic ﬁeld theory and mathematical modelling.

The RTG SCARE addresses computerized systems that are placed in an environment with which they cooperate. System correctness means that the cooperation between environment and system satisfies desired behavioural properties. SCARE systematically investigates the problem of system correctness under adverse, only partially predictable conditions which can influence the behaviour of the system, the system context, and the assumptions made for verifying correctness. The RTG will consider three aspects of adverse conditions, both individually and in their combination:

A limited knowledge,
B unpredictable behaviour,
C changing system environment and system structure.

The main aim of SCARE is research into notions of system correctness that guarantee robustness of the system behaviour under such adverse conditions.

Supervision in the research training group is based on the four elements of "Levelling", helping doctoral candidates from diverse backgrounds to rapidly blend into the research environment, "Bonding", aiming at establishing a local and global research network, "Progress", which amounts to supervision and active support, and "Exchange", guaranteeing visibility in the scientific community. Together, these elements will support the doctoral candidates in becoming independent researchers who will be able to investigate complex problems autonomously and to effectively interact with the international research community.

Successful applicants for the research programme should have an excellent Master's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, fluency in English, and a strong interest in exploring new notions of system correctness in a cooperative research environment.

Intl Summer School "The socio-economic dimension of conflict re

The Center for Conflict Studies (CCS) at the University of Marburg (Germany) is delighted to announce the Call for Applications for the international summer school "The Socio-Economic Dimension of Conflict Resolution". The CCS has been awarded a grant by the German Academic
Exchange Service (DAAD) to organize the summer school in collaboration with the Russian-Tajik Slavonic University (RTSU) and the DAAD in Dushanbe. The summer school will take place at RTSU from August 20-26, 2012.

The objectives of the summer school are fourfold: First, the program aims at acquainting students with basic qualitative methods of conflict analysis including interview techniques as well as discourse and content analysis. Second, students will receive training in approaches to conflict resolution and mediation. Third, students will be introduced to socio-economic dimensions of conflicts and conflict resolution. Finally, students will apply the acquired skills in practice through the analysis of specific conflicts in Central Asia.

The school aims at Master students or advanced students from Central Asian countries. In addition, a small number of Master or doctoral students from Germany can also apply. All applicants are asked to submit a CV of no more than two pages and a letter of motivation. The
letter of motivation must not exceed 700 words. The letter of motivation should outline the reasons for applying and the intended benefits you expect for your further studies at university, research or professional career. JOURNAL/CFP- Beyond Brezhnevism - Cahiers du Monde russe Call for Papers for an upcoming special issue

Topic: Beyond Brezhnevism- -Growing Autonomy for Social Groups and Assimilation of Socialist Values

The image of "real Socialism" as an age of "stagnation" is gradually disappearing from studies of the Soviet Union. Indeed the clear cultural and social changes of the Brezhnev era are now part of a revised historiography. Despite the immobility of a political leadership unable to bring any serious reform to a drifting economic and social system, as political repression and ideological control slackened, Soviet citizens created, revived and occupied areas of autonomy.

At the same time, the socio-cultural processes that flourished in 1964-1982 had their own timing that preceded or extended beyond the precise dates of Brezhnev's rule: this concerns urban planning, the development of tourism, communications and media, and greater access to higher education. The study of these already reported phenomena deserves to be reviewed on the basis of the written and oral sources to which the researcher now has access. Similarly, the recent emphasis on the spread of cross-border patterns of consumption and thought and the increase in international exchanges places the geographical bounds of the Soviet Union in a wider context.

Cahiers du Monde Russe wishes to challenge "Brezhnevism" in two ways, as the incarnation of "stagnation" and as a strictly delineated temporal and spatial framework, unsuited to the study of the profound social, cultural and economic changes that prepared the way for the upheavals of the late 1980s and the collapse of the USSR.

Phd Scholarship in Biogeochemistry and Hydrogeology

PhD Scholarships in Australia (Biogeochemistry and Hydrology) The Centre for Coastal Biogeochemistry at Southern Cross University (Lismore, Australia) is offering two PhD scholarships valued at $23,000 per year. The scholarships are tax free to both Australian and international students. Tuition and fees will be waived.

The two projects should focus on the following:
1) Influence of submarine groundwater discharge on carbon cycling in coastal waters, supervised by Dr. Isaac Santos
2) Investigating the transformation and fate of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in coastal sediments using stable isotope tracers, supervised by Dr Joanne Oakes.

Field sites for PhD projects can be negotiated, and include hydrothermal fields, sand beaches, mangroves, coastal embayments, estuaries, and coral reefs. The Australian education system differs from the American system in that no course work is required for PhD students, allowing the student to engage in full time research from the start. The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics is among the biggest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology for different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total approximately some 250 staff. We are now looking for a total of two phD-positions divided into two different research areas: Cancer Epidemiology and Neuroepidemiology.

Our breast cancer epidemiology group comprises 2 professors, 4 postdocs, and 4 PhD-students. The group has a vast international collaboration and frequently interacts with European, Singaporean and US groups. The present thesis will aim at acquiring a comprehensive picture of breast cancer prognosis. In Sweden, one woman in eight will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime and approximately one fourth of breast cancer patients will die from their disease, while many more will suffer from treatment related complications. There are both host (patient) and tumor characteristics that define breast cancer prognosis, as well as treatment response and complications. Therefore our aim is to study both patient and tumor determinants of breast cancer prognosis.

Our neuroepidemiology research group studies genetic and environmental risk factors for the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis and Parkinson’s disease; and the research group consists of researchers from both Karolinska Institutet and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in the United States. The present thesis will for the first time systematically investigate the relationship between metabolic disorders and ALS and improve our understating of the potentially shared aetiology of metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. The role of metabolic disorders on cardiovascular diseases has been broadly investigated, while a potential role of metabolic disorders on neurodegenerative diseases including ALS is less well studied.
Duties and responsibilities
Cancer epidemiology:
Under supervision, the PhD student will be responsible for literature review, data analysis, result interpretation, scientific article writing and data presentation. We will study the long term prognosis among women treated for breast cancer using registry data. Next we want to study inheritance of breast cancer prognosis as well as tumor specific markers for disease progression. Finally we will explore a possible association between mammographic density, site of metastasis, and prognosis. Your supervisors have a broad expertise in cancer epidemiology, clinical oncology, biostatistics and molecular techniques.

Neuroepidemiology:
Under supervision, the PhD student will be responsible for literature review, data analysis, result interpretation, scientific article writing and data presentation. We will 1) assess the associations between diabetes/BMI and ALS; 2) examine whether metabolic disorders share a high comorbidity correlation with ALS; and 3) estimate predictive value of medication use profile on ALS risk. The project includes register data, lab and clinical data. Your supervisors have a broad expertise in neuroepidemiology, medicine, and environmental epidemiology. During the PhD training, the student will spend one-year research sojourn in the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
Eligibility/ Qualifications
To be eligible, an applicant must
1. hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree
2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 HECs, of which at least 60 at second-cycle level, or
3. have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent competence in Sweden or abroad.

Those who meet the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 HEC or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of July, 2015.

Selection is made of qualified applicants on the ground of their ability to benefit from doctoral (third-cycle) education. Karolinska Institutet applies the following assessment criteria:

Following events such as the summer 2007 floods in the UK and the publication of the Pitt Review there is great interest in the economics of flood prevention. In the UK insurance premiums are currently used to estimate the benefits of flood prevention schemes but studies in the US have found that the present value of insurance payments is less than the property price discount for living in an area prone to flooding. This PhD proposes to use nonmarket valuation techniques such as the hedonic price technique and choice experiments empirically to determine the economic benefits to households of protection from flood risk.

Applicants are required to have (or must anticipate having) an MSc in Economics and must have studied Environmental Economics and Advanced Quantitative Methods. Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems will be advantageous. Applicants should include a short 2-3 page explanation of how they would value flood risk using nonmarket valuation techniques.

The second conference on Sociology and Social Work will be held in Oslo, Norway, May 30 and 31, 2012. The location will be Oslo University College in the center of Oslo, Norway. The first conference on Sociology and Social work was in Lisbon, May 2011.

Sociology and social work are two disciplines concerned with social problems, social structure and how individuals respond to and live within cultural and structural constraints. Delinquency, inequality, deviation and social exclusion as well as childhood, family and care are other examples of themes addressed by both disciplines. Both sociology and social work deal with the relationship between theory and practice. Theory and practice are often understood as being
mutually exclusive. If one deals with theory, it might be interpreted as one cannot at the same time work practically. On the other hand, when we act in practical work, the theoretical background is often overlooked. We say: “This is theory “and the sentence: “that is not
practice” does not even have to be added. Contrary to this dichotomized view, the expression: “…there is nothing as practical as a good theory” from Kurt Lewin, 1944, shows the intertwined positions between the two. This expression has entered our everyday language but without really making a difference in how we in our professional and everyday lives understand the relationships between the two concepts. The concepts interact and are related in many different ways. To place them as two separated areas easily leads to an oversimplification.

How do theory and practice interplay within the disciplines of social work and sociology? Social work is often viewed as a practical profession without a theoretical basis for action. And sociology is in the same one dimensional way understood as just a theoretical discipline. The question to be asked is how theory and practice interrelate in different ways.

We invite scholars from different backgrounds to submit both qualitative and quantitative contributions. The abstracts may focus on theoretical, empirical or methodological aspects.

CfP: 2012 CES Pre-dissertation research fellowships, Council for Europe

The Council for European Studies invites eligible graduate students to apply for the 2012 CES Pre-Dissertation Research Fellowships. Each fellowship includes a $4,000 stipend, travel support for attending and presenting at the CES International Conference for Europeanists, and the opportunity to publish in Perspectives on Europe, a bi-yearly journal of the Council for European Studies.

Eligibility: CES Pre-Dissertation Fellowships are intended to fund a student’s first major research project in Europe, thus, graduate students who have already engaged in extensive field work and study in Europe are not eligible. Likewise, applicants must be in the early, exploratory stage of their research; late-stage ABD students are not eligible. Also, applicants
are expected to have already finished the majority of their doctoral coursework and must be currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a university that is a member of the Council for European Studies’ Academic Consortium. Students whose universities are not currently members of the CES consortium are welcome to apply, and every effort will be made to enroll the institution in the CES member consortium and, thus, establish the student's eligibility.

This one day course, presented by Dr Shona Hilton, is aimed at researchers who have little or no experience of content analysis. Everyone is welcome, regardless of research background. The course aims to introduce researchers to the method of manifest and latent content analysis with step by step instruction on developing a coding frame, coding and analysing media stories. Although the course is primarily targeted at those with an interest in examining the media’s
influence on health using content analysis, the method can be used to analyse a variety of text. £225

This two day course is aimed at researchers who are planning to undertake or manage qualitative research using in-depth or semi structured interviews or those who have already collected qualitative interview data which they are unsure how to analyse. It aims to introduce the principles and practice of qualitative interview data analysis, with particular emphasis on thematic analysis techniques. It uses a combination of practical workshops, group discussions and formal lectures. The course will also introduce participants to narrative analysis and discourse analysis. £440

CALL FOR PAPERS
In the age of globalisation, British mainstream academic research seems to pay too little attention to other parts of the world. In this context, Marginal Cartographies: Researching Beyond Borders, the 6th Annual Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference which will take place
at the University of Warwick on 28th April 2012, aims to offer an arena for research that deals with marginality, in all its senses. The Conference focuses on research that goes beyond traditional disciplinary, temporal or spatial boundaries. We welcome papers that go beyond perspectives, theoretical approaches or methodologies that frame current British mainstream research in the field of humanities, arts, education, cultural studies and social sciences in a broader sense.

The following streams on marginalized perspectives are intended as a (non-exclusive) guide of possible topics/clusters:
Theoretical perspectives on marginalised/ broadly overlooked topics
Methodological issues
Sensorial research, including visual research
Embodiment, emplacement, and cultural practices

The organising committee welcomes abstracts from postgraduates in any discipline, on issues that fit within and go beyond the focus and topics suggested above. Selected papers will be presented in a friendly and supportive academic environment, with each presentation lasting 20 minutes and 10 minutes for questions and answers.

General Linguistics: PhD Student, Queen Mary, University of London

As a member of the ESRC-funded London Social Science Doctoral Training Centre, The Department of Linguistics (School of Languages, Linguistics and Film) at Queen Mary, University of London invites applications from candidates wishing to Undertake a PhD within the Linguistics pathway of the London Social Science DTC. The DTC has 10 studentships to award for 2012 entry across all constituent Disciplines. Successful applicants will benefit from joint training provision by
Queen Mary and Goldsmiths, University of London.

Applications are accepted for either of the following PhD programmes:

1) PhD in Linguistics. This is a three-year (+3) programme for those who hold an MA or equivalent postgraduate qualification in linguistics or a related field.

2) MA/PhD in Linguistics. This is a four-year (1+3) programme for those without An MA or equivalent postgraduate qualification in linguistics or a related field.

We welcome proposals in all ESRC-fundable areas of Linguistics, but especially In sociolinguistics (both variationist and interactional) ; multilingualism; Sociophonetics; discourse analysis; and ethnography of communication.
