Research in the Medical Cell Biophysics group (MCB) at the University of Twente is focused on cell analysis in areas of medical relevance. The subject of this project is the development of a system that enumerates lymphocytes expressing CD4 that can be operated in rural settings in resource poor countries.

Development of an affordable system for monitoring treatment of HIV

One important research area in the MCB group is the simplification of cell counting techniques. The group developed an image cytometer that can detect fluorescently labeled cells and received a grant from STW in 2004 to develop the system for affordable testing of HIV patients. This grant was extended for a period of 2 years to further simply the methodology, continue testing of the current system in resource poor countries and identification of potential manufactures of the system.

Job description
As a post-doctoral fellow you will develop a method to label CD4+ lymphocytes in small blood volumes without the need for a pipette that is compatible with the analysis system. You will be working in collaboration with the Prof J Greve, Prof L Terstappen, a technician and students in the group. Apart from contributions to the biochemical parts of the project we expect contributions in microfluidics and optical instrumentation for the newly developed assay. We expect that the successful candidate has excellent communication skills, is able to write grant applications and can supervise external collaborations.

We seek a postdoctoral fellow (M/F) for a period of 24 months beginning on or after 1 July 2008. The multidisciplinary character of the research involves aspects of (bio)chemistry microfluidics and optical instrumentation. We seek a candidate with a strong (bio)chemical background and familiar with biophysics. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and/or training in Biophysics or Chemical Physics. As the final aim is the development of a simple system it is important that the candidate has a practical attitude. The candidate will preferably have experience in several of the following areas: immobilization techniques, antibody labeling techniques, cellular analysis techniques such as flowcytometry and fluorescence microcopy. You will be part of a small team working on the development of the system and excellent technical support for instrumentational needs is available.

The Research Participation Program for the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) provides opportunities to participate in historical research projects. Fellowship positions are available at the post-master's and post-doctoral level to individuals with degrees in history or a related field.

Under the guidance of research mentors, historians will conduct research on issues related to JPAC’s mission: the recovery and identification of missing U.S. servicemembers. The participant will have the opportunity to analyze historical records and materials to produce thorough detailed reports for use by search and recovery teams in the process of investigating and identifying incidences of missing American servicemen from operations during WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Cold War.
Applicants should have received an M.A. or Ph.D. degree in history, military studies, political geography, international studies or related field within 3 years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date. Applicants should have a strong foundation and demonstrated proficiency in the ability to collect, research, catalogue and analyze relevant historical data from primary, secondary or cursory sources. JPAC expects candidates to be skilled at extracting critical elements of information and convey it in writing for a diverse audience.

The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens, without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.

The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests, compatibility of background and interests with applied research at JPAC, and availability of funds. Applicants are asked to submit a sample of published writing. This may be a refereed journal article, book, book chapter, or chapter(s) from a master's thesis.

The appointments are for one year and may be renewed for up to two additional years upon recommendation of JPAC and subject to availability of funds. The appointments are full time at the host installation in Hawaii. The participants will receive stipends based on qualifications. Stipend level will be $53,760 per year for a post-master's appointment, and $64,440 for a post-doctoral appointment. Inbound travel and moving expenses will be reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs may also be reimbursed for research or training related to the project if approved by JPAC. The participants must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans for postgraduate participants are available through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education.
