CfP: Rethinking the Self: Transnational and Transdisciplinary Bioethical and Biopolitical Concerns

International symposium at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of Helsinki, Finland, 10–12 April 2012.

Keynote speakers include Prof. Beverley Skeggs, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK, and Dr. Jenny Slatman, Maastricht University, the Netherlands.

This international and interdisciplinary symposium addresses how cultural, medical and political understandings of the self are shifting and changing in contemporary societies. It explores how humanness is imagined and conceived in various symbolic systems of knowledge, and how gender, disability, class and ethnicity articulate these understandings. With a particular focus on how ideas of the flesh and national identity reconfigure experiences of the embodied self, the symposium aims to bring together scholars whose work engages with issues that range from medical and cultural technologies, globalisation, migration and neoliberalism to phenomenology and ethics, political ideologies and subjectivities, and theories of social transformation.

This symposium aims to create a transdisciplinary dialogue regarding the local and global changing understandings of and practices related to the self by bringing together speakers from a broad range of cultural, methodological, national, disciplinary and transnational foci. It seeks to further conversations and research on topical and vexing questions of the self, especially in relation to recent medical, cultural, technological, political, social and neo-colonial developments. With an emphasis on the biopolitics of bodies, machines and institutional
structures, the symposium also addresses the ethics of human selfhood, specifically how we define the human and what is at stake in our definitions of this now global being.

We welcome submissions for papers, poster-presentation s and artwork from a broad range of disciplines and fields of research. Topics can include, but are not limited to:

* Theories and technologies of the self
* Community belonging and violence
* Contemporary medical therapies, technologies and ethics (organ donation and transplantation, gene therapy, HIV therapies, etc.)
* Class dimensions of the self
* The self, disability and monstrosity
* Self harm and narratives of the self
* Medicalised race theories
* Gender, sexuality and queering the self
* Phenomenology, the senses and an embodied sense of self
* Ethics and the ethics of the human

2 Day Symposium
Kiss Kiss Kill Kill: The Forgotten Spy Films of Cold War Europe. 18-19 September 2010, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield

Coinciding with the Kiss Kiss Kill Kill exhibition, this 2-day, parallel strand symposium aims to bring together international scholars, critics, collectors, graphic artists and cinephiles to explore the issues surrounding the European poster art and the European spy film between 1950-1985.

In collaboration with the UH Arts and the Hertfordshire Film Consortium, the conference will explore the relationship between poster art, graphic design and espionage cinema during the Cold War, while providing an interdisciplinary forum for the development and appreciation of cult film, literature and the applied arts.

The proposed analysis of graphic art, poster design and rare film will include a consideration of themes such as film archiving, marketing, European aesthetics, international audience reception, genre and state politics.

The symposium will also host rare film screenings and special guest appearances. Films secured for screening will include:

Danger Route (GB Holt 1968)
This screening of a rare 16mm print of Seth Holt’s magnificent low budget spy thriller made by Amicus will also include Q&A with leading actor, Richard Johnson (TBC)

CfP: 6th International Young Scholar SOEP Symposium, Bremen International

For the sixth time the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS) of the University of Bremen and the Jacobs University and the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) in collaboration with the Hanse Institute for Advanced Study (HWK) are pleased to announce the “International Young Scholar German Socio-
Economic Panel Symposium”.

The symposium provides an opportunity for doctoral students of all disciplines (e.g. economics, demography, psychology, sociology) at any stage of their doctoral thesis, to present empirical research in progress – carried out with panel data (especially SOEP data) – and to discuss theoretical, conceptual and empirical issues with
senior researchers. We encourage interested young scholars to submit abstracts. If you would like to attend the symposium, please submit an abstract of your topic (350 words, in English) together with complete contact information before whether your proposal has been accepted before December 15, 2009. The deadline for submission of
the full paper (5.000 words) will be All accepted papers will be made accessible to commentators and participants one month prior to the symposium. During the symposium each presenter will have about 20 minutes for presentation, 10 minutes comments by a senior researcher, and 10 minutes plenary discussion. The official language of the
symposium will be English.

Catering as well as accommodation for non-locals will be provided. The conference fee is € 25.November 30, 2009. We will inform you January 31, 2010.

Scope
The "2nd International Symposium on Information Management in a Changing World," organized by the Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University, will take place in Ankara, Turkey, from 22-24 September 2010. It aims to bring together both researchers and practitioners to discuss the impact of technological convergence and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter on current information management practices in libraries, archives and museums and their implications for education for library and information science. Convergence and social networks also influence the scholarly electronic publishing, open access and institutional archives, digitization of cultural heritage and the socialization of information.

The technological convergence is defined as the intertwinement of technologies. A single product such as a cell phone can be used not only to communicate but also to take pictures, listen to music, get access to the Web, and find our way by successfully combining the communication, audio, video, web and GPS technologies. Similarly, our professional, personal and social lives also converge. Social networks such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn are used not only for social networking and entertainment but also for access to information, for learning and for carrying out professional work. Social networks commonly have Web 2.0 features, offer personalized services and allow users to incorporate their own content easily and describe, organize and share it with others, thereby enriching users’ experience. Users expect information providing organizations to offer similar services and they want libraries to be as accessible, flexible, open to collaboration and sharing as that of social networks. The future of libraries, archives and museums is closely associated with how successfully they meet the demands of digital users.

The themes are not limited with the above topics. In addition to papers, posters, workshops and panels on the impact of convergence and social networks on information management, papers on information and records management in general are also welcome. Student papers and posters will also be considered. Accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings book and the Symposium web site. Selected papers will be published in refereed journals.

Paper Submission Process
The language of the Symposium is Turkish and English. In addition to refereed papers, posters and workshop proposals are also considered. Papers, posters and workshop proposals should be prepared using the templates available through the Symposium web site. Papers, posters and workshop proposals in final form should be submitted electronically by January 18, 2010.

Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed and the authors will be notified of the outcome by March 1, 2010. Final copies of the accepted papers and posters should be sent in by April 26, 2010 in order for them to be included in the Symposium proceedings book. The Symposium proceedings book will be published prior to the Symposium and made available to the registered participants during the Symposium. Workshop proposals will also be reviewed by the Program Committee and the authors will be notified by March 15, 2010.
