The Department of Computer Science at the University of Trier offers the full-time position of a

Research Associate

in the ’Smart harvesting for social science open access literature and research data’ project sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinsch aft) starting November 1st. The position is limited to 2 years and is paid according to the German
Public Service salary scale 13 TV-L.

The applicant should have a Master or Diploma degree in Computer Science or Business Informatics.

The access to technical literature is a central prerequisite for high-class research. However, organizations providing for this access are facing a major challenge in efficiently collecting data while ensuring excellent data quality. The bibliographic database DBLP
(http://dblp.uni-trier.de) contains about two million references to publications in computer science. The joint research project with GESIS (http://www.gesis.org/), Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, aims to develop and evaluate methods for automatically collecting and processing such data with special emphasis on information extraction. The information extraction methods are used to automatically gather bibliographic data from web servers of important publishers or digital libraries. These methods shall help to expand, complement, and correct the data sets of DBLP and GESIS.

In the group "Databases for New Applications" at University of Hagen, Germany, a position for a research assistant is available. As is common in Germany, besides supporting the teaching duties of the group, the candidate is expected to also work on and complete a Ph.D. after a few years. The group is well-known in the research community for work on spatial and moving objects databases as well as the development of extensible database architecture and a corresponding

In support of a major multidisciplinary Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project Language and Linguistic Evidence in the 1641 Depositions, led by Dr. Barbara Fennell, we are seeking a Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Software Development/ Humanities Computing. You will work with the Principal Investigator (PI) and a team of other linguists, computer specialists and historians to further develop and analyze a digitized corpus of quasi-legal statements from witnesses to the 1641 rebellion in Ireland. Consulting with Humanities Computing experts in Dublin, the postholder will develop facility with IBM LanguageWare?, and will work with the PI and Early Modern English Research Fellow to develop the ontologies needed to manipulate the digital corpus in order to be able to interrogate it about the nature of the language represented within it (for interpretation by historical linguists, dialect and text analysis specialists and cultural, political
and social historians). The postholder will then proceed to help develop an
interactive research site for use by linguists, historians and lay inquirers.

To be appointed as a Research Fellow you must hold a PhD in a relevant computer science discipline, or to be appointed as a Research Assistant you must hold a Master's degree plus the appropriate level of experience that demonstrates the required skills and capabilities. You should have demonstrated expertise in java programming, databases, XML, and have a strong understanding of modern web technologies. You will be disciplined, but creative and innovative, and motivated by the creation of transformative research technology. A flair for user interface design and visualization techniques would be prove advantageous.

A Research Fellow will be appointed at the appropriate point of Grade 6-7 scale (£29,853 - £36,715 per annum), and a Research Assistant will be appointed at the appropriate point of the Grade 5 scale (£25,001 - £28,139 per annum).

= DECLARATIVE LANGUAGES FOR THE EXPLORATION OF LARGE NETWORK DATA =

In collaboration with colleagues in the cognitive and social sciences as well psychology we are working on new approaches to the analysis of, potentially huge, network data. We are particularly interested in network structures that result from communication and interaction on the Web 2.0 (social networks, discussion boards, collaborative tagging sites, wikis, etc.).

To enable non-computer scientists to creatively work with such huge data sets, this project will develop

- declarative database languages for the exploration and analysis of network data structures.

Your work will build on our group's prior research efforts: the database-supported evaluation of XQuery (pathfinder- xquery.org, monetdb-xuqery. org), LINQ (ferry-lang. org), and modern scripting languages (e.g., Ruby). Further relevant technology includes database distribution and MapReduce (offline evaluation of non-local social network properties) or the import of external network data via, e.g., Google's OpenSocial API or RSS feeds.

= REQUIREMENTS =

The Department of Communication at the University at Albany, SUNY seeks applications for an immediate Research Assistantship to begin in Spring 2010, offered through its doctoral program. The research assistantship entails work on a federally funded research project directed by Professor Jennifer Stromer-Galley that aims to predict real

SHARE-it: Supported Human Autonomy for Recovery and Enhancement of Cognitive and Motor Abilities Using Information Technologies

(TV-L13, approx. € 32,000 to € 40,000 p.a. gross)

The goal of the project SHARE-it is to develop a scalable, adaptive system of add-ons to sensor and assistive technology so that they can be modularly integrated into an intelligent home environment to enhance the individual’s autonomy. The system will be designed to inform and assist the user and his/her caregivers through monitoring and mobility help. Thus, we plan to contribute to the development of the next generation of assistive devices for older persons or people with disab lities so that they can be self-dependent as long as possible. We focus on add-ons to be compatible with existing technologies and to achieve an easier integration into existing systems. We also aim at adaptive systems as transparent, and consequently, easy to use to the person as possible. Scalability is meant to include or remove devices from the system in a simple, intuitive way.

At the University of Bremen , the work in SHARE-it concentrates on the development of a cognitive performance model as a basis for interaction models tailored
to individual users' requirements.

To the tasks of the applicant belong the development of the cognitive models and interaction models that describe the users' capabilities (both with and without impairments) and the quality and degree of assistance provided by the interactive systems.

Practical experience in the following areas is desired:

* cognitive computational modeling
* software design and development
* cognitive architectures and modeling tools (e.g., ACT-R)
* fluent in written and spoken English

Additional knowledge that would be appreciated:

The Department of Politics and International Relations seeks to appoint a Research Associate for 12 months, from January 2009 to December 2009, on a project on Transnational Communities and Conflict under the supervision of Professor Hugh Miall. The project is carried out in partnership with a European consortium and is funded by the EC under its Framework Programme 7. The project is described at

The University of Kent is responsible for research on transnational communities from Kosovo, Turkey/Kurds, and the Great Lakes (Hutus/Tutsis) in London, and also for research on the Kosovo conflict. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to this research, writing reports surveying the transnational communities in London, identifying their organizations and leaders, interviewing, and gathering information about the roles they play in conflicts and efforts to mitigate conflicts in the homeland and hostland.

Applicants should have a background in politics, international relations, sociology, anthropology, conflict and peace studies or a similar discipline. A familiarity with the situation of diasporas, with the literature on their role in conflict, and with sources of information about transnational communities in London would be an advantage. Experience of interviewing, surveys and qualitative research would also be an advantage.

The successful candidate should be computer literate and a confident and presentable self-starter. The appointee will be capable of effective research, independent initiative in carrying forward the project, working to high standards and tight deadlines. The post will require effective liaison with other consortium members and good communications with members of transnational communities and civil society organizations.

The Department of Politics and International Relations is based in Rutherford College. The Department dates from the foundation of the University but has been rejuvenated in recent years with a young, dynamic and rapidly growing staff. The Department has a long-standing commitment to excellence in teaching and we aim to provide the best possible learning experience for our students.

Our research profile cuts across traditional divisions in the discipline of Politics, International Relations, European Studies and Area Studies. The Department has research strengths and teaches in the politics and international relations of Britain, Europe and the EU, Russia, China, the USA, Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East. Twenty-three members of academic staff work at the Canterbury campus and three in Brussels.

Graduate Research Assistantship, Lehigh Univ (USA)

Graduate Research Assistantship: Biogeochemical and Hydrological Cycling in Terrestrial Ecosystems.* Lehigh University seeks applications for an MS or PhD student in climate change and terrestrial ecosystem dynamics starting in Spring 2009 or Fall 2009.

Student should be interested in studying how changes in climate, atmospheric chemistry, and land use affect terrestrial ecosystems. We will explore the effect of both historical changes and future scenarios of climate, CO_2 fertilization and plant physiology, ozone pollution, and land use and management on ecosystem productivity and the hydrological response. There is also the possibility to explore paleoclimatic issues of interest. The approach will involve computer modeling with climate and biogeochemical models.

Candidate should have background in geologic or atmospheric sciences and skills in quantitative modeling and computer programming. Student will take a wide-range of courses in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department to provide the integrated knowledge necessary to understand the Earth as a system. The Faculty of Economics of the University of Lugano, Switzerland, opens an assistant position in Accounting & Financial Management, starting in Fall 2008. The main responsibility will be to support the teaching of accounting and valuation courses and to assist empirical research projects particularly in the field of corporate governance. It is encouraged that the candidate will begin a Ph.D. at the Swiss Finance Institute or at the Faculty of Economics in Lugano.

* Master in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related discipline, with strong foundation in quantitative methods

* Econometric proficiency is a plus, e.g., Time Series Analysis
* Programming and database experience is a plus as well as familiarity and experience in gathering and processing accounting and financial data
* Excellent command of English and either Italian or German

Postdoctoral Research Assistant - Cohomology of Moduli Spaces, University of Oxford, UK

Applications are invited for an EPSRC postdoctoral research assistant to work with Professor Frances Kirwan on a project entitled The Cohomology of Moduli Spaces. The position is available for 8 months from 1 August 2008.

The aim of this project is to study the cohomology rings of moduli spaces of curves and moduli spaces of vector bundles over curves (where the curve varies as well as the bundle) by representing these moduli spaces as geometric invariant theoretic quotients. Applicants are expected to have a background in algebraic geometry, with some knowledge of geometric invariant theory and of moduli spaces of curves.
