Call for Applications

The International Research Center for "Work and Human Life Cycle in Global History" at the Humboldt University Berlin and funded by the Federal Ministry of

Education and Research (BMBF) invites scholars to apply for 10 International Research Fellowships (5 stipends for senior scholars and 5 stipends for postdoctoral candidates) for the 2011-2012 academic year as well as for future academic years. Applications are due in Berlin on November 15, 2010.

Candidates: We welcome candidates especially from the disciplines of history, anthropology, law, sociology, political science, and area studies. Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level or senior scholars. Postdoctoral candidates should have received their doctorate within the last five years. Proposed projects should employ a historical and transregional perspective. The project should focus not only on work/labor, but on life course as well. Possible topic areas are, among others, the household, loss of work, and free and unfree work. We welcome proposals with an emphasis placed both on European and non-European regions and especially those that look at the entanglements between different regions. In any case, global history has to be taken into consideration.

The fellowships begin on October 1, 2011 and end on July 31, 2012. Shorter fellowship terms will be possible. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend, which can be individually negotiated. They are obliged to work at the International Research Center in Berlin. A fully equipped office will be provided as well as organizational help for visa, housing, etc. We encourage fellows to introduce their work to wider audiences in the scientific community in Berlin.

Senior Fellow in Informatics - University of Oxford

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior researcher in bioinformatics with a strong background in software engineering to take a lead on a cutting-edge research programme in genomics and global health, operating within a global research network that links leading UK centres in genetics and genomics with major clinical research programmes in Africa and Southeast Asia.

The Medical Research Council Translational Centre for Genomics and Global Health (http://www.cggh.ox.ac.uk) is a new initiative led by Professor Dominic Kwiatkowski at Oxford University and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. The Centre will develop informatics systems and data-sharing standards to integrate clinical and epidemiological studies at the MRC Laboratories in The Gambia, the KEMRI / Wellcome / Oxford Programme in Kenya, the Mahidol / Wellcome / Oxford Programme in Thailand and the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam, with high throughput genome technologies, bioinformatics and statistical genetics at Oxford University and the Sanger Institute. There will be a focus on topics of practical relevance for the prevention of malaria and other infectious diseases.

This is a senior position reporting to the Director, with responsibility to provide leadership for the Centres informatics team, including one or more major projects linking large-scale clinical and epidemiological studies at the Centres partner institutions in Africa and Asia with high throughput analysis of genome variation at Oxford University and the Sanger Institute. You will have an international reputation in your field, with strong skills in computation and data management, a PhD in a relevant subject and significant postdoctoral experience. You will be well-equipped to lead a multi-cultural team and ideally have experience of working in or with countries in the developing world.

Tenure is negotiable for up to five years. Candidates may be appointed for two years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension. Further information about the Centre can be found at: http://www.cggh.ox.ac.uk
