USA: Environmental Postdoc Fellowship at Harvard University

*2011-2014 Environmental Fellows Program Competition at Harvard University*

The Harvard University Center for the Environment created the Environmental Fellows program to enable recent doctorate recipients to use and expand Harvard's extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems. The Environmental Fellows will work for two years with Harvard faculty members in any school or department to create new knowledge while also strengthening connections across the
University's academic disciplines.

The fellowship will provide an annual stipend of $55,000 plus health insurance, a $2,500 allowance for travel and professional expenses, and other employee benefits. The Harvard University Center for the Environment awarded four fellowships in 2010, and expects to award approximately four to five fellowships per year thereafter.

Potential candidates should start early to identify and establish a relationship with a Harvard faculty member to host his or her research. The host will be a mentor to the fellow and will provide office space and basic administrative support. In agreeing to be a host, the faculty member is making a significant commitment. Successful candidates will be enthusiastically recommended by their proposed host. Each applicant's host must submit a letter of support (maximum of two pages) to the
selection committee describing in detail the level of commitment to the research and the candidate.

Applicants unfamiliar with Harvard faculty members will find many of them listed on the Center's web pages organized both by academic areas (economics, engineering) and by research topics (climate, human health). Most faculty members have their own web pages which will provide much more detailed information about publications and interests and which may be accessed through the main Harvard website http://www.harvard.edu/.

Preparing your Application to KAUST
Thank you for your interest in the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). We suggest you carefully review the list of requirements and prepare your application in advance of the deadline.

You should complete your bachelor/master’s degree in a KAUST-relevant field of study prior to the semester of enrollment.

Current field of study must be in a KAUST-relevant area, such as Engineering, Mathematics, or the Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences.

There is no minimum GPA requirement for admission. However, most candidates will have an average cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or equivalent in other international grading systems. The average GPA of admitted students is currently 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.

KAUST requires a minimum TOEFL score of 79 on the IBT (Internet Based Test) or 6.0 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) before an application will be considered for admission. KAUST's university code for the TOEFL exam is 4107. Only official TOEFL or IELTS scores will be accepted. TOEFL or IELTS scores for tests administered by an educational institution for admission to that particular institution are not acceptable.

A TOEFL or IELTS score is not required if the applicant is a native speaker of English (English is the primary language spoken in the home) or received a degree from a university in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand. KAUST does not require the GRE exam for admission. However, we encourage students to take the GRE general test. A high quantitative score on the GRE will enhance a student’s application Official test results should be send directly from ETS. The KAUST university code is 4139. The average score on the GRE quantitative section was 780 for admitted students in the 2010 admission.

Description of research topic and environment:
A postdoctoral position is available for research on the roles of electrical signalling in the wound response in the plant model Arabidopsis. The work involves
collaboration between the dedicated electrophysiology laboratory of Stephan Kellenberger (http://www.unil.ch/dpt/page61353_en.html) and a laboratory studying the molecular genetics of the wound response in
Arabidopsis (Edward Farmer; http://www.unil.ch/dbmv/page8006_en.html). The Farmer laboratory has recently found fast biochemical responses to wounding that may be initiated by ion fluxes (J. Biol. Chem. 284, 34506). In addition a gain-of-function ion channel mutant identified in the laboratory mimics the wound response (Plant J. 49, 889). We seek someone to conduct electrophysiology experiments on intact plants (primarily intracellular recordings). One aim of the project is to test whether electrical activity is critical in the wound response. This multidisciplinary project is situated in the vibrant Lausannebiomedical research community. Lausanne and nearby Geneva offer a superb lakeside environment.

PhD positions, ecological modelling, Goettingen, Germany

Rationale
The project will investigate the ecological and socio-economic trade-offs at the rainforest margin under land-use change. Previous insights (e.g., Steffan-Dewenter et al. 2007 ) will be extended using dynamic modelling techniques. Based on a large and long-term data set, ecological and socio-economic model components will be developed from scratch that simulate the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use (rainforest, agriculture) and individual households. Combined model analyses will investigate trade-offs in biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, and household income.

One position will focus on the development and analysis of ecological models (grid-based and agent based models) while the other will focus on economic modelling (microeconometric models, calibrated agricultural household models). Either position can be filled by a postdoc or a PhD, depending on experience and integrative abilities. The postdoc will be responsible for the integration of ecological and economic model components.

Requirements
Successful applicants hold a master degree in Ecological Sciences, Plant Sciences, Economic Sciences, Applied Mathematics or a related field, with sound experience in simulation modelling and with the work in interdisciplinary teams. The project will be based in Göttingen, Germany, but will involve travelling to Indonesia.

Salary and conditions
The positions will be awarded for at least 18 months, with a possible extension of up to three years. The salary is in accordance with the German state regulated public service salary scale (PhD: 65 % E 13 TV-L, Postdoc: 100% E 13 TV-L). INTERIGHTS' Europe Programme is pleased to invite applications for a three-month funded internship with a focus on the rights of disadvantaged groups, such as persons with disabilities, LGBT people, ethnic minorities, people suffering from HIV/AIDS.

The exact nature of activities will depend on organisational and programme priorities at the time of the placement; however, it is likely that the main areas in which experience will be offered will include:
. Legal research on international and comparative human rights law and practice to support the preparation of briefs before domestic courts and the European Court of Human Rights;
. Preparation of materials for INTERIGHTS' training workshops on the European Convention on Human Rights;
. Assistance on INTERIGHTS' publications on the European Convention on Human Rights;
. Where possible, attendance at meetings with human rights practitioners, lectures in London, or visits to other international / national human rights organisations based in London.

The three-month internship will begin in October 2010 and will be based in London. INTERIGHTS will arrange and pay for travel and visa costs. The intern will receive a monthly grant of ?1,200. Accommodation is not provided but INTERIGHTS can advise on finding a suitable place to stay. Applicants should check the attached terms of reference to ensure that they fit the requirements before applying.

TERMS OF REFERENCE

The successful applicant will:
. have a degree in law;
. have worked for two years in a human rights NGO or as a practising lawyer in one of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe/Former Soviet Union;
. have significant and demonstrable experience of working with the European Convention on Human Rights and the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights;
. be connected with civil society actors in the region and show potential to contribute to the development of human rights law in the region;
. have worked and have interest of working on the rights of disadvantaged groups, such as persons with disabilities, LGBT people, ethnic minorities, people suffering from HIV/AIDS.
. be familiar with regional and international human rights instruments and mechanisms;

Going Abroad on a Scholarship? Here’s What You Need to Know!

It’s not every day that scholarships come knocking at your door, and when you hear that you’re now eligible for a free education at an international university, it’s a day to celebrate. However, if you’re unprepared for what lies across the oceans, you could end up suffering many hardships which prevent you from focusing on your studies and earning your degree with good grades. If you’ve applied for an international scholarship, you must prepare yourself for the day you may qualify for it. Even though this may seem like an overly optimistic thing to do, if you don’t plan ahead, you could find yourself in a difficult situation.

• Almost all scholarships include only your tuition fees, so you will need much more money in hand to pay for your accommodation and food.

• You may plan on working part-time once you get there, but there are conditions under which international students are allowed to work. You would most probably be allowed to work only on campus (at the cafeteria, library, student office, laboratories, or even as a teaching assistant if you are a grad student) for up to 20 hours a week during regular course time. When college closes for vacation or summer break, you could work for 40 hours a week, if your place of work is still open for business.

• It’s not very easy to find a job on campus - they are the most sought after gigs by students because they don’t require a commute and because it’s easy to juggle classes and work when they’re in the same location. These jobs are in great demand, and as a foreign student who is not familiar with the language and customs of the place, it could be an uphill climb to find a good job on campus.

• Campus jobs may not pay much, so if you depend on them to pay your living expenses, you could be short of cash before the month is out. And unless you have financial means of your own, you could end up deep in debt with no way out.

• Check out the university, its location and its credentials before you accept the scholarship; ensure that you’re not taken for a ride by scammers who want to cheat you of your money. If you’re in doubt, call the university office and talk to the people concerned before you finalize your travel plans. Ensure that all your communication with the university is authentic.

Be prepared for every possibility when you’re going abroad for an education – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime, so ensure that you don’t waste it by being caught unawares.

Vor diesem Hintergrund befasst sich der interdisziplinä re Workshop mit Orientalismen in Ostmitteleuropa. Gefragt wird nach Akteuren und ihren Handlungsfeldern, nach beteiligten Institutionen und thematischen Schwerpunkten sowie nach Motiven und deren Darstellung in der
Literatur und den bildenden Künsten. Einen weiteren Themenkomplex bildet die Frage nach einem regionalspezifische n ostmitteleuropä ischen Orientalismus. Moscow has always held a special significance in Russian consciousness, not only as a political, historical, and cultural centre, but also as a talisman of Russia?s messianic role in the global arena. Today, both despite and because of dramatically
transformed circumstances, Moscow's image continues to dominate the country's identity. Indeed, under Putin/Medvedev as president and Luzhkov as mayor, Russia's promoted self-image and Western portrayals of the city implicitly equate Moscow with Russia. The purpose of the conference is to bring together leading academics in anthropology, art, film, history, literature, and sociology, as well as art and
media curators, to examine the phenomenon of "Moscow as A Global City" specifically, its role as manifested in high and popular culture across a variety of media, including architecture and the internet. Focusing on Moscow as a representation of Russia both within the post-communist space and in the West, the conference will explore issues of city and nation branding, globalisation, mediation, and everyday practices.

Keynote speaker: Vasilii Tsereteli (Director, Moscow Museum of Modern Art) Round table chaired by Prof. Helena Goscilo (Chair, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Ohio State University, and Visiting Leverhulme Professor, University of Leeds).

Proposals for talks (20 minutes) are welcome from a range of cultural, historical, and social studies disciplines and may include such themes as cultural and national identity; gender, ethnic and sexual identity; transition; postmodernism; the organisation of space; Moscow as symbolic capital; Moscow in the consciousness of the Russian diaspora.

The Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies at Stanford University invites submission
of paper abstracts for a workshop on Language, Literacy, and the Social
Construction of Authority in Islamic Societies. The workshop will take place on
March 3-4 2011 in Stanford (California, USA) and is a joint project of the
Abbasi Program and the Middle East –Mediterranean Studies Program at Sciences Po
in Paris. Travel and lodging arrangements for the workshop participants will be
provided.

The workshop will focus on the processes underlying the social construction of
authority in Islamic societies and the way those processes have been affected by
issues of language and the development of literacy from 17th century and onwards
in the context of peripheries as well as the core regions (specifically, West Africa, the Caucasus, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Middle East).

Particular topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- issues concerning print, manuscript and oral tradition
- rise of new media (such as internet) and language
- the ulama's retention of authority through reassertion or, in some cases, reinvention of their relationships to classical discourses
- the emergence of new spheres of religious authority beyond the ulama, and how this is related to evolutions in language and literacy
- the production of Modern Standard Arabic out of classical literary Arabic and its relationship to rise in literacy and consequent devolution of religious authority
- the politics of languages of education in West Africa, between Arabic and vernaculars
- the fate of Arabic as a the universal Islamic language more generally across
various regions
- the rise of English, French, and Russian as authoritative languages of Muslim
discourse in colonial and post-colonial settings
- the development of Urdu as the lingua franca of Muslim communication in India and its relationship to reformist madrasas in north India
- relationships between nationalisms, languages, and universal versus local religious communities

Berlin International Human Rights Congress (BIHRC), Berlin, Germany

The Berlin International Human Rights Congress (BIHRC) is an international congress, taking place on the 20th anniversary of German reunification that will offer an interdisciplinary analysis of the fields of human rights and democracy. The event will explore developments in these areas over the past two decades and will then
consider the key issue shaping discussions on the international level today. The program will consist of lectures, seminars, debates and panel discussions that will feature leading figures from international politics & diplomacy, academia, civil society, international development, and the private sector. Participants of the program will also have the unique opportunity to celebrate the 20th anniversary of
German reunification on the streets of Berlin.

Politicians, academics, journalists, and other international stakeholders are in widespread agreement of the importance of human rights standards. There exists, however, a plurality of opinion on the nature of human rights – are there universal standards that should be applied to all, or should human rights standards vary according to cultural contexts and historical experiences? The issue of human
rights also plays a key role in international diplomacy, with human rights records a key factor in determining membership of international organisations, in outlining foreign policy priorities, and in justify the threat and use of economic sanctions and military action. The BIHRC will explore these debates from an interdisciplinary range of perspectives, using a diverse range of case studies and with focus on the German approach.

Closely related to the issue of human rights is our understanding of democracy and how democracy is put into practise in different contexts. As Germany looks back at two decades of a unified democratic state, there is considerable debate at the international level as to the definition of the term. In particular, there is a plurality of views on whether democracy refers only to a state which holds “free
and fair elections”, or whether additional factors must also be taken into account, such as an independent judiciary and a free press. The Berlin International Human Rights Congress will consider the varying definitions of democracy and, through international case studies, explore the challenges and opportunities ahead.

The overall aim of The Berlin International Human Rights Congress is to encourage inter-disciplinary, cross-cultural discussions on salient issues surrounding the field of Human Rights and to promote greater understanding across national borders.

The Conference is open to applications from academics, diplomatic and political representatives, civil society practitioners, journalists, young professionals and students and other individuals with an interest in international relations, cultural studies, and global politics.

“A World Without Walls 2010” is an international conference being hosted by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy that will explore the potential for cultural diplomacy and soft power in building peace and supporting reconciliation in different regions of the world.

The program will consist of lectures and seminars held by leading figures from international politics, academia, international development, and civil society, as well as debates and panel discussions. In addition to attending the academic components, participants will have the opportunity to experience Berlin’s rich
cultural landscape and network with each other through a series of cultural and social events. The event is scheduled parallel to the historic international celebrations taking place in Berlin on November 9th, commemorating 21 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

There is a general consensus that the process of globalisation is creating a world in which individual nation states are increasingly interdependent. National approaches to issues including crime, healthcare, immigration, tourism, trade and investment, and climate change are increasingly dependent on the policies and approaches of
neighbouring states and international partners. Despite this growing interdependence, there remain a large number of conflicts across the world with deep-rooted historical experiences, from political conflict at the international level to violent conflict at the sub-national level. The de-escalation of these conflicts requires creative thinking and new approaches that take into account both the history of the division and the evolving global context within which it is set.

“A World Without Walls 2010” will consider new approaches to peacebuilding and reconciliation that have emerged over the preceding decade, focusing in particular on the use of soft power and cultural diplomacy. The program will then move to consider lessons learned from individual case studies, looking in detail at the examples such as Northern Ireland and Rwanda. During the final part of the conference, contemporary examples of conflict from different regions of the world will be considered and the potential for cultural diplomacy and soft power to play a role in their de-escalation will be discussed.

The Conference is open to applications from academics, diplomatic and political representatives, civil society practitioners, journalists, young professionals and students and other individuals with an interest in international relations, cultural studies, and global politics.

6 CEE Best PhD Thesis Award development / migration / demography

UniCredit & Universities Foundation has launched the first competition for 6 CEE Best PhD Thesis Award aimed at all young PhD graduates from the 19 Eastern European countries belonging to the geographical scope of our Group (Group geography except from Italy, Austria and Germany).

The prizes will be awarded to 6 outstanding doctoral dissertations in economics, political economy, banking or finance on European integration issues. Two prizes will be assigned to dissertations on migration, two will be assigned to dissertations on
development and demography, while the last two are unrestricted (to be assigned to any other topic). The 6 best dissertations will receive € 5,000 each and will be published in the Working Paper series of the Foundation. The conditions for participation are as follows:

1. Applicants must be citizens of one of the 19 CEE countries of UniCredit Group is geography (except Italy, Germany and Austria).

Foscolo Europe Fellowships

The Foscolo Europe Fellowships, in their second edition, are intended to support the homecoming of great European minds. The fellowships are aimed at the most talented researchers who initially graduated from European universities and then went on to complete a Ph.D. in economics or finance outside of the continent; applicants must still be teaching or researching abroad, with an intention to return to Europe to continue their research.

These fellowships will be awarded every two years, covering a two-year period of research, and they are renewable for an additional two years. In 2009 UniCredit awarded one Ugo Foscolo Fellowship to Emiliano Santoro, PhD from University of Cambridge and, currently, Assistant Professor at University of Copenhagen. Thanks to the Foscolo Europe Fellowship, from October he will be back in Milan and prosecute
his research at Catholic University. The new announcement for one Foscolo Europe Fellowship 2010 is already open. The Fellowships amounts to € 60,000. Applications must be submitted online. It is now open the call for 3 Crivelli Europe Scholarships. For the first time, it is open this year to the best graduates from all over Europe.

The Crivelli Europe Scholarships are aimed at graduates in economics, banking and finance who wish to take PhD courses abroad. Starting this year, UniCredit & Universities Foundation has increased the number of scholarships to three and has changed the name to "Crivelli Europe" to highlight its new European dimension. Indeed, the scholarships are addressed to:

1) the best students of all 22 nationalities where UniCredit Group is present, who have a degree in economics or finance at any European/non- European university (also outside the geographical area of the Group);

2) the best students of any nationality with a degree in economics or finance from any European university within the geographical area of the Group.

Its purpose is to bring into the scientific circulation scholar studies and unpublished sources, especially archival documents, pertaining mainly to Moldova's past, as well as to modern and contemporary Romania. The integrating perspectives, the references to the history of Central-Eastern Europe will find a well deserved place within the pages of this review. Lotus is an Erasmus Mundus Action Two Partnership (EMA2) of European and South-East Asian Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and Associations aiming at fostering mutual enrichment and better understanding between the EU and South-East Asia (China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand), through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills at higher education level and to co-operate in the following program activities:

Mobility of undergraduate and graduate students
Mobility of PhD students
Post-doc mobility
Academic and administrative staff mobility

The types of mobility to be funded are:

For students: undergraduate, master, doctorate and post-doctorate mobility opportunities
For academic staff: exchanges for the purposes of teaching, practical training and research
This project is to give South-East Asian students and staff the possibility to go to a European University to improve, enrich, learn, experience, .... their own knowledge and skills.

Please bear in mind that the scholarships are only granted to South-East Asian students and staff coming to Europe.

The grant covers:

monthly subsistence allowance
travel ticket
insurance
tuition fee

To enable students to benefit in a linguistic, cultural and educational way from the experience of pursuing academic studies in another country, all students should have a thorough command of English.

USA: Financial Assistance for International Students at Idaho State University

*About Idaho State University*
ISU is classified as a regional public doctoral/research institution and offers 285 degrees and certificate programs. The school with about 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students has 17:1 faculty to student ratio and an average class size of 20. ISU hosts 280 students from more than 60 countries and over 50 scholars per year. Idaho State University welcomes applications from international students, and it committed to providing opportunities for international applicants to find success. *Graduate Assistantships*
At ISU a large percentage of full-time graduate students have either teaching or research assistantships. Assistantships require full-time enrollment, normal profess toward a degree, and offer a complete waiver of normal tuition costs. *Non-Resident Tuition Waiver (NRTW) Scholarships*
Incoming and continuing students with a U.S. GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or equivalent or higher are eligible to be considered for an NRTW award. An award of this kind *reduces tuition costs for international student by approximately 70 percent*, at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Renewal of the award requires continuation of a 3.0 GPA and reapplication. Students in a few academic programs at ISU are not eligible for this award, and awards are always dependent on availability. No application is required for incoming students to be considered. Priority deadlines for admission and consideration: May 1 for fall award, November 1 for spring award.

*Room and Board Scholarships*
Undergraduate students who do not receive an NRTW award may be eligible for an award of full room (selected residence halls) and board (meal plan) costs. An award requires a U.S. GPA of 2.75 or higher. No application is necessary and this award is only available to new incoming undergraduate students. This scholarship cannot be awarded to students receiving an NRTW award. Priority deadline for fall award: May 1.

*On campus employment*
All international students who are maintaining their legal status in good standing are eligible to work part-time jobs on the ISU campus. On-campus jobs are in demand, and the pay cannot cover most expenses, but many international students can be found earning extra money in such positions across campus. Eligible international students can work up to 20 hours each week during an academic session, and up to 40 hours each
