Master Scholarship in Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering COSSE, Erasmus Mundus, Europe

The Erasmus Mundus programme “Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering” (COSSE) is a joint initiative of four European universities:

* KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
* Technical University of Berlin, Germany
* Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands
* Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen – Nürnberg, Germany

COSSE is a two-year master`s programme offering a double degree from two universities. The students enter one of the universities and continue the second year at one of the other institutions in another country. COSSE offers education of the highest international standard as well as a unique experience of meeting different European cultures, languages, climate and nature.

The EACEA (the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency) awards 7 to 10 category A scholarships and 6 to 8 category B scholarships per Erasmus Mundus Master`s programme.
Category A scholarships (non-EU member states) can be awarded to applicants from non-EU member states (but not to applicants from Norway, Liechtenstein or Iceland) UNLESS they have resided in a EU member state or in Norway, Liechtenstein or Iceland, for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years (by 31 January of the year of enrollment).

The category A scholarship includes:

* Travel and installation costs: € 8000 for a 2 year programme
* Participation costs (including insurance coverage): € 4000/semester
* Monthly allowance: € 1000/month

Category B scholarships (EU-member states) can be awarded to applicants from EU-member states and to applicants from Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland

The category B scholarship includes:

* Travel and installation costs – only if the EM master`s programme includes a mobility period to a Third-Country partner: € 3000
* Participation costs (including insurance coverage): € 2000/semester
* Monthly allowance: € 500/month

Who can apply for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship (Action 1)?

Candidates who apply for an Erasmus Mundus Master Programme are at the same time considered for a scholarship nomination for this specific programme. The scholarships are awarded to the highest ranked candidates that fulfill the following scholarship conditions:

* The applicant has applied correctly, fulfilled the admission requirements and is nominated for a scholarship by the EM consortium.
* The applicant has not applied to more than three (3) Erasmus Mundus master`s programmes during one round of applications.
* The applicant should be able to spend his study period in at least two of the consortium partner countries. These two countries must be different from the country in which the applicant has obtained his/her last university degree; the mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility, neither can they take place in institutions outside the consortium.
* The applicant has not yet benefited from an EM master`s programme scholarship.
* The applicant should not benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.
* The applicant should be enrolled as a full-time student and commit himself to participate in the master`s programme in accordance with the terms defined by the consortium in the Student Agreement. Failure to do so could lead to the cancellation of the scholarship.

Double Degree Master in Agricultural Water Management

The Agricultural Water Management for Enhanced Land and Water Productivity programme is jointly offered by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education
(UNESCO-IHE). The programme is a double degree programme.

Start next run: August 2011

Duration: 20 Months

Locations: AIT, Bangkok, Thailand and UNESCO-IHE, Delft, the Netherlands

Degree: Students who successfully complete this programme will be awarded two Master degrees: one from UNESCO-IHE and one from AIT. The degree students receive from UNESCO-IHE is the MSc degree in Water Science and Engineering, with a specialisation in Hydraulic Engineering - Agricultural Water Management for Enhanced Land and Water Productivity. AIT will award a degree in Water Engineering and Management.

Context

The population growth - particularly high in emerging and developing countries - means that these countries have an additional challenge to meet the Millennium Development Goal of food security by increasing production in their own territory, where possible combined with increased import of food.

Researches estimate that in the coming decades about 80-90% of the required increase will need to be realised on existing cultivated land, and about 10-20% on newly reclaimed land. For sustainable rural development, socio-economic and environmental aspects play crucial roles. It is also imperative that the modernisation of existing water management systems, including management transfers, remains a continued process.

Increased vulnerability of agriculture is due to flooding caused partly by the impacts of climate change, land subsidence and the escalating value of land because of the requirement of higher yields per hectare.

This necessitates the agricultural water management in such areas to be integrated with flood management and flood protection provisions. This Double Degree Master programme focuses on these issues.

Target group
The target group for this programme are young professionals working at ministries, authorities, river basin and water users associations, universities, research institutes, civil society organisations, and consultants dealing with or interested in the fields of planning, water
resources, agriculture, environment, public works, or related fields. Participant' s profile
Candidates with a bachelor's degree preferably in Civil, Agricultural, or Environmental Engineering or related fields are eligible to apply. In principle, candidates should have a minimum of three years of practical or research experience in water management (irrigation, drainage) or on integrated rural development/ management since graduation.

All applications are, however, considered on their individual merits. Since instruction and examinations are given in English, it is essential that participants have a good working knowledge of the English language. If there is any doubt about a candidate's proficiency in English, he or she will be required to take one of the internationally recognised language tests before confirmation of admittance.

Post-doctoral position at the Cochin Institute, Paris

Fellowship of the « Région Ile-de-France» (18 months starting September 2010 with possibility of extension for 6-12 months). The candidate should possess a strong back-ground in molecular biology (DNA cloning, etc..).

Project : Study of O-GlcNAc glycosylation of FoxO1 the betapancreatic Cell

O-GlcNAc glycosylation of cytosolic and nuclear proteins constitutes a reversible post-translational modification, analogous to phosphorylation, which now appears as a major player in the regulation of cell signalling. This modification depends on glucose concentrations, allowing a regulation of protein activities according to the metabolic environment of the cell. O-GlcNAc modification could therefore participate in the deleterious effects associated with chronic
hyperglycaemia observed in diabetes (glucotoxicty).

The transcription factor FoxO1 plays a major role in important biological processes such as regulation of energy metabolism as well as cell proliferation and apoptosis, notably in pancreatic beta-cells.

Our team was the first to demonstrate that FoxO1 is O-Glycosylated, resulting in an increase in its transcriptional activity in liver cells. More recently, we have observed that FoxO1 is also O-glycosylated in pancreatic beta-cells. This mechanism could play a crucial role in pancreatic glucotoxicity, by inducing the apoptosis of the beta cells.

The objective of this project will be to determine the consequences of O-GlcNAc glycosylation of FoxO1 in pancreatic beta-cells. The project involves the use of betapancreatic cell lines, isolated pancreatic islets as well as inducible FoxO1 KO animals.

Job description
The successful candidate will do research to get a PhD in Biomedical Sciences. Our projects are focused on neuroimmunological repair strategies after brain and spinal cord injury with special emphasis on the use of anti-inflammatory mediators to enhance functional regeneration. The successful applicant will be working on “the use of stem cells as carriers of pro-regenerative factors after spinal cord injury”.

The project includes a rich spectrum of techniques such as cell and brain slice cultures, histology, molecular biology and behavior tests. We offer a highly interactive and well-equipped environment at the host. The BIOMED institute was established in 1999 and conducts biomedical research in two core areas: neuro-inflammation and the development of biosensors. Basic and
clinical research is organized in four strategic programs and much effort is put into academia-clinic interactions and academia-industry interactions for valorization of scientific findings. BIOMED employs approximately 120 persons including more than 35 PhD students.

The candidate will also participate in teaching macroscopic and microscopic neuroanatomy in the department of morphology for bachelor students in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She/He will also supervise master students in the School for Life Sciences. The UHasselt provides a high-performance and dynamic teaching concept based on supervised self studies in which researchers also play an active role.

Profile and diploma
We are looking for particularly motivated and ambitious scientists. Experience with stem cell culture and cell transfection will be greatly appreciated. The candidate must have excellent communication skills, a good knowledge of English, and must be highly motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team. For teaching purposes, the candidate must become fluent in Dutch within one year. Candidates must have an officially recognized master degree in biological,

Students study Shakespeare and also the Writers associated with Oxford, including Oscar Wilde, John Betjeman, J.K Rowling, T.S.Eliot, Tolkien, Lewis Carroll and Thomas Hardy. You will read novels, plays and poetry from a selection of both the old and the new, which are then looked at
critically in the context of the time at which they were written.

This course considers Shakespeare' s writing from his earliest works to the late plays. We will address concerns that persist throughout his work (power, gender, the ambivalence of language), as well as trying to become attentive to the ways in which his writing changes over time. A
particular focus will be the relationship between Shakespeare' s work and the world in which he lived and wrote. **

You will enjoy the programme if you love reading, and you enjoyed those English lessons where you really got to grips with a novel, a play or a poem. You will also visit places associated with Shakespeare eg Stratford, and the places linked with Oxford writers, such as Tolkien,
Shelley and Lewis Carroll.

*Course Two:The Visual Arts*

You will study fine art, painting, photography, sculpture and the decorative arts, and the social and political context in which they were produced. You will look at European Art of the Renaissance as well as Modern Art. There is also a chance to specialise, including writing an
extended essay on a subject of your choice

Oxford is a wonderful city for the study of Art ....there are numerous galleries including the Ashmolean (the oldest in Europe) and MOMA. The Colleges of the University often house major works such as those of the pre-Raphaelites. If you love wandering around art galleries, this is the course for you, and it'll give you an insight into our culture and our history.

*Course Three: Classical Studies and European Languages*

Oxford is renowned for the study of Humanities and Languages in particular and has some of the most inspiring teachers in these subjects in the world. Greek and Roman Literature and Philosophy are the basis of the future development of European Culture. You will study (in
translation) major writes of the Classical period, such as Plato, Aristotle, Horace and Cicero. You will relate their works to the society in which they lived.

You will also study the language and literature of a European country, chosen from France, Spain or Germany. The texts will include works by twentieth century writers and will relate their work to the historical and social background of the time.

Students who have previously studied a Classical or Modern Language will take some of their classes separately from beginners, and their programme will include translation and study of the texts in the original.

*Course Four: European History and International Relations*

You will study twentieth century European History, focussing upon the changing relationships between the European States and the importance of the USA in the century's history. **

You will also study the British system of government including parliament, parties, elections, pressure groups and our concepts of representation and participation. But students can also choose to look at the US government as well as the new systems in Europe.

Fascinated by current affairs? Want to understand how our societies developed? Or perhaps you just fancy studying a subject that unfolds on our television screens every night. You will also visit the Oxford Union and Debating Society, where many of our Prime Ministers began their
political career.

*Workshop One: Creative Writing*

Are you eager to write your first play, poem or novel but not sure where to start? Or have you written something previously but need some new inspiration?

Our creative writing workshop, led by published authors, will guide and stimulate your imaginative powers. You will expand your skills of observation and language by looking at the work of various writers of drama, novels and poetry. You will collect numerous tips on craft and
practices.

You will produce your own short story, or play, or poems during the workshop and these will be shared with the group on completion.

Creative writing is one of the most stimulating and fulfilling ways to express yourself, and you're never too young or too old to enjoy this fascinating opportunity.

*Workshop Two: Drawing, Painting and Jewellery Design*

Led by some of Oxford finest artists and jewellery designers, the workshops provide an enjoyable introduction to both painting and jewellery design, covering line, tone, shape, composition, and colour. You will use various drawing and painting mediums and shown how to create structure, depth and space, as well as how to see colour.

You will produce your own portfolio of work, sometimes based outdoors with your tutor and drawing upon the inspiration of the beautiful city of Oxford. You will also produce at least one piece of jewellery as a memento of this wonderful creative experience.

*Workshop Three: The Oxford University Union Style Debates*

The Oxford University Union (www.oxford-union.org) is probably the most famout Debating society in the world. It is the place where many British prime ministers began their political careers. It attracts renowned international guest speakers each week....people such as presidents, business leaders and people from the world of show business.

In this workshop of Oxford Union-style debates audience members are expected to contribute during the debate itself. Each member of the group will also have the opportunity to be a speaker or to chair the debate.

An experienced tutor will lead the debates and topics will include current affairs, culture, music, and society. During their stay participants will visit the Oxford University Union.

A fun way to increas your communcation skills and confidence!

*Workshop Four: The Oxford Summer Show!*

Led by a professional actor, the group will produce and perform a play working which will be shown in front of a live audience on completion. The choice of play is discussed with the group and the actors before arrival.

The workshop includes practical theatre techniques, a Shakespeare Masterclass, a behind--the- scenes visit to the Theatre, and the opportunity to see one of Oxford's famous summer plays, held in the Gardens of one of the Colleges of the University.

We teach over twenty subjects and individual tuition can be arranged for an additional fee in any of them. You will live, like an Oxford undergraduate, in one of the Colleges of Oxford University, such as Wadham College (www.wadham.ox.ac.uk) . Your seminars will also take place in the University.

The rooms are for single occupancy (but it is possible to arrange for two friends to share) and students have breakfast and dinner in the College. Oxford is a small city and the Colleges are in the centre. Lunches can be purchased easily from one of the many restaurants, stores or coffee shops. A packed lunch is included on excursion days.

Students have use of the Oxford City Library, which has excellent facilities for loan of books for additional reading, and for use of computers with educational software. This is very close to the Colleges of residence, but students who wish to buy a bus pass to travel to other locations in the city are advised to purchase a "Freedom Pass" which is very good value.

HHMI's new fellowship program supports outstanding international predoctoral students studying in the United States who are ineligible for fellowships or training grants through U.S. federal agencies.

HHMI will award three-year fellowships to international students to support years three, four, and five of a Ph.D. program. Eligible biomedical-related fields include biology, chemistry, physics, math, computer science, engineering, and plant biology--as well as interdisciplinary research.

HHMI expects to fund up to 40 fellowships for the 2011-2012 academic year. Each fellow will receive an annual stipend of $30,000, plus an educational allowance.

The Movies that
Matter Festival has two main sections:
A Matter of ACT presents documentaries on and debates with human rights defenders

Camera Justitia focuses on films and debates on international law, transitional justice and the fight against impunity.

Therefore, Movies that Matter especially welcomes films about human rights defenders and international law and justice. Activists and directors of the selected films in these competitions will be invited as guest for the festival.

Movies that Matter Foundation

Movies that Matter is a foundation established in Amsterdam in 2006 - springing from the Film Festival Department of Amnesty International in The Netherlands. Movies that Matter believes that films, by capturing social responsibility, can engage viewers in a dialogue about human rights and the threats to human dignity. Using such a lens, Movies that Matter aspires to raise awareness and fight human rights violations, both national and international.

Movies that Matter is the home base for various activities. Besides the Movies that Matter Festival it realises a human rights programme at International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), educational programmes and monthly human rights film and debate programmes in a network of ten Dutch theatres. Committed to the support and promotion of human rights film screenings worldwide, Movies that Matter offers an extra stimulus to the wider circulation of human rights films in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Background: Wageningen University and Research Centre (WUR) is worldwide renowned for its research and education in the fields of life sciences, plant improvement and sustainability. Through these activities it aims to make essential contributions to the quality of life. A focus of pioneering research towards increased yields and improved quality is the genome biology of
economically valuable crops such as tomato and potato.

The Plant Sciences Group of WUR has an important position in international efforts to elucidate and use the genome sequence of these crops. The Applied Bioinformatics group of the PSG participates in these efforts through next generation sequencing, genome assembly, annotation and extracting biologically relevant knowledge from such genome sequences.

WUR is also a partner in the Centre for BioSystems Genomics (CBSG2012). The CBSG and the National Institute for Plant Genome Research in Delhi, India, have received a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to start a joint research project on development and application of next generation sequencing technologies to one of CBSG€ ¢â’ ’¹s crop targets, tomato, which is also an important crop in India.

Job description: the job concerns a PhD position in the Applied Bioinformatics group of the Plant Sciences Group of WUR. In this project, we will analyze the genomes of three tomato genotypes: two parents of the well-studied introgression line population, S. lycopersicum cv. Allround and S. pennellii LA716, and the genome of one F5 offspring line. Sequencing of these genomes will be performed in an associated project and will involve a combination of next generation sequencing technologies. Comparative bioinformatic analyses of the parent and offspring genomes will be geared towards obtaining novel insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic introgression in plants. The PhD student will assemble, annotate and compare the three genome sequences with the aim to study the pattern of genome reorganization from
chromosome- down to nucleotide-level detail. We will test and employ a variety of bioinformatics tools for genome assembly, annotation and whole-genome comparison, and perform SNP mining for breeding purposes.

The collaboration within this project with the National Institute for Plant Genome Research in New Delhi, India, will imply that the PhD student will spend a maximum of 2 years of the 4-year PhD study at the sister institute in India. In addition, the PhD student will actively cooperate with an Indian counterpart (PhD student) based in Delhi and working on the breeding aspects of the project. This PhD student in return will spend a maximum of 2 years in Wageningen.

What do we look for?
We are looking for an enthusiast team player with:

* an excellent academic record (MSc) in bioinformatics
* interest in genome informatics and bioinformatics for breeding
* demonstrable skills in programming (perl or python, java, R) and databases (MySQL)

* good oral and written communication skills in English
* willingness to spend several periods amounting to 2 years of the PhD period in New Delhi, India

* people skills in connection with biologists, breeders and bioinformaticians

What do we offer?
You will be part of a young, dynamic and focused applied bioinformatics group of ~15 people consisting of computational biologists and biology-oriented informaticians that focus on bioinformatics challenges in genomics. We offer a state-of-the art computational infrastructure and have close collaboration with plant biologists and breeding companies with considerable expert knowledge of the biological issues and wishes concerning the data. The position is available for 4 years, full time (38 hrs/wk), 2 years of which will be housed in New Delhi, India. The student will be part of the graduate school of Experimental Plant Sciences (EPS). The research should result in the successful defence of a PhD after 4 years. In line with the quality protocol of EPS, after 12 months and assuming progress and performance of the PhD student meets requirements the position will be continued for the full period.

Preferred starting date: as soon as possible.

Estimated maximum salary: € 2042/month in the first year, rising to € 2612/month in the fourth year (Dutch university PhD)
