The Ph.D. courses in Applied Mathematics, Astroparticle Physics, Geometry, Mathematical Analysis, Mathematical Physics and Theory of Elementary Particles start in October; all other courses start in November of each year. They last 3 years and may be extended for a fourth year, subject to approval by the School authorities.
Students who are not citizens of European Union member states have two possibilities to be admitted to SISSA as a Ph.D student:

1. to pass a Spring preselection based on academic and scientific qualifications as well as on letters of reference. Students selected in this way will therefore enter the School without taking the regular entrance examination, but will be expected to pass a qualifying examination within the first year of study.

2. to pass the regular entrance examination (written and oral) held in Trieste.

Applicants interested in participating in this pre-selection must have a University degree which qualifies them for a Ph.D programme.

PhD Close environment effect on antenna-channel-Grenoble

A PhD scholarship in Electrical Engineering has been announced for the academic year 2011. The PhD scholarship is in association with the Institute of Nuclear Sciences, France. The research area for this PhD scholarship is Electromagnetism - Electrical engineering / Engineering science, Mathematics - Numerical analysis - Simulation / Engineering science.

Title of PhD project: Close environment effect on antenna-channel characteristics

Description: New wireless systems present strong constraints in terms of miniaturization and of antenna integration into the mobile devices, which often leads to a degradation of the antenna performances. Moreover the electromagnetic interaction with the close surrounding environment and the user (hand grip, proximity to the head, contact with the human body in Body Area Networks, etc) can strongly impact the terminal performance. These effects are systematically neglected in channel modeling and can lead to unfair evaluation of the wireless communication system performance.

The aim of this PhD thesis is to investigate and model the effects of the near field perturbation on the antenna characteristics and on the propagation channel, in order to predict and mitigate their influence on the system performances.
This thesis will be carried out in collaboration with the Comelec department of Telecom ParisTech. The student will share his time between the two laboratories.

Postdoc Position Announcement: Social Science Perspectives on Climate Change in South Korea

Project description
The Department of Population and Social Geography, University of Bayreuth, Germany (http://www.bevsozgeo.uni-bayreuth.de/en/index.html) invites applicants for a one-year Postdoc appointment, beginning in June 2011 (negotiable). The successful candidate will undertake original research in South Korea from a qualitative social science perspective in cooperation with a currently ongoing PhD thesis project on climate change adaptation.

This position is part of an interdisciplinary project (TERRECO) that ties together research activities in plant ecology, biodiversity, soil science, hydrology and social science which will be the domain of research. TERRECO (Complex Terrain and Ecological Heterogenity) started in 2009 as a German-Korean research cooperation including Gangwon National University, Seoul National University, Yonsei University and other major research institutes in South Korea. All research activities are conducted in South Korea with a particular interest for Gangwon Province. By filling this vacancy, we aim to intensify the social science component of this interdisciplinary project.

Therefore, the focus of investigation should concentrate on theory driven questions that are on target for political discourses and practices labeled under the frame of climate change from a constructivist research perspective. The aim is to critically examine the relations of power and their implications for the governance of climate change. Explicit topics could be the negotiation processes of environmental law in relation to climate change, the role of ministries for the processes of adaptation and mitigation, or the recently implemented ‘Green Growth’ strategy with a local case study area in Gangwon Province. We expect the empirical examination by qualitative social science methods like participant observation, interpretative text analysis, (expert) interviews and other ethnographic methods.

Qualifications
The department invites Postdoc applicants with a research background in human geography, political science, sociology and/or ethnography and possibly with an interest in critical theory. Moreover, both experience of the above mentioned qualitative methods and a good command of Korean and English are required. The empirical research will be conducted in South Korea, but some time will also have to be spent in Bayreuth, Germany, in order to participate in interdisciplinary meetings and workshops.

The salary depends on age, marital status and number of children and will be approximately between 3000 and 4000 Euro (pre-tax)/ month.

Ajinomoto Scholarship for ASEAN International Students

2012 Application Guidelines

1. Aims

This program enables students from five ASEAN countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam) wishing to enroll in a master's course (major in one of the sciences) at the University of Tokyo, to secure scholarships before their arrival in Japan. It
aims to cultivate individuals capable of leading Asia in the twenty-first century and to contribute to the development of Asia and the world as well as to mutual understanding between these countries and Japan.

2. Eligibility

Applicants who wish to enroll in a master's course and major in one of the sciences (except medicine and veterinary medicine) at the University of Tokyo and who fulfill the following requirements and qualifications.

1. Applicants must be citizens of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, or Vietnam.

2. Applicants must have graduated or be expected to graduate with an excellent academic record (with 16 years of education completed or expected to be completed) and must receive the recommendation of their university president or academic advisor or be otherwise qualified to enroll in the University of Tokyo.

3. Applicants must be under the age of 35 on April 1, 2012.

4. In principle, the applicant must be able to obtain approval of acceptance as a Postgraduate International Research Student (hereinafter "Research Student"), from the University of Tokyo and be registered as a Research Student for April 2012 or October 2012.
However, the applicant may enroll directly as a master's course student of some graduate schools in the University of Tokyo. In that case, the applicant must be able to obtain approval of enrollment from the University of Tokyo and be registered as a master's course student for Apr 2012 or Oct 2012.

5. Applicants must acquire adequate Japanese language proficiency that is required in order to research and study in a master's course, when enrolling as a master's course
student of the University of Tokyo.

6. Applicants must apply from the above 5 countries and be able to attend selection procedures when necessary.

7. Applicants must be in good physical and mental health and have a strong motivation for learning.

8. Applicants must not be receiving other scholarships.

3. Scholarship Amounts
a) Research Student at graduate school: Â¥150,000/month (for max. 1 year)
b) Master's course at graduate school: Â¥180,000/month (for max. 2 years)
c) Examination, Admission and Tuition fees: covered in full
d) Airfare (to and from Japan): covered up approximately to Â¥200,000 (equivalent amount for economy class ticket. Actual amount in principle)

4. Number of students to be accepted
1 student from each of 5 countries (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam)

5. Period of Scholarships
Scholarships will be provided for max. 3 years, 1 year studying as a Research Student and max. 2 years studying in a master's course. The scholarship will be suspended if the scholarship recipient fails to pass the entrance exam for a master's course within a year after arriving to Japan if the recipient enters as a Research Student.
If the recipient enters as a master's course student, scholarships will be provided for max. 2 years.

6. Application details of each graduate school of the University of Tokyo
Applicants can enroll as Research Students or master's course students in one of the sciences (except medicine and veterinary medicine) of the graduate schools in the University of Tokyo. Refer appendix 1 for details.

9. Selection Process

The screening will be based on the received documents, such as research activities and study plans, university transcript and the letter of recommendation.

10. Suspension or Termination of Scholarship

b) Receives any other scholarship.
c) Fails to pass the entrance examination to a University of Tokyo master's course within one year after arriving to Japan (recipient who enters as a Research Student).
d) Fails to arrive in Japan by the appointed date.
e) Shows poor academic performance due to absence, lack of desire to study or being unable to keep up research for some reason.
f) Has difficulty continuing to study due to illness or other health problems.
g) Violates the rules and regulations of the University of Tokyo or the Ajinomoto Scholarship Foundation.

The accomplished documents are reviewed by faculty council. For the applicants who are requested to enroll in April, the letter of acceptance will be issued in Jan, 2012. Participants have two enrollment options. Either they opt for the Diploma option, which requires them to register for and pass an examination at the end of the course, and entitles them to receive a course Diploma and CEU academic credits. Or they opt for the Certificate option, which entitles them to receive a Certificate of Participation, provided that they meet the course requirements.

*Short description: *
This advanced course focuses on the practice of European Union Law, and this year more particularly on the European Union and the Individual. Participants receive hands-on insider analysis about the functioning of the European Union. The program is designed to combine seminars on different subjects as well as workshops supporting the topics addressed in these seminars or some aspects thereof. The Total Law - Method constitutes the backbone of the program and gives it its exceptional flavor.

The course will improve the participants' skills by explaining how economic, social and political contexts shape the particular legal problem addressed and impact the thinking about its legal solution. The program will equip participants with the ability to understand the
economic, social and political consequences of different legal outcomes. The discipline is Law. The focus is Law. But the premise is that Law cannot be understood, nor practiced professionally and competently, without understanding its broader contexts. Furthermore, this specificity of the Total Law' method allows for the program to be appealing and enriching to participants coming from different disciplines.

*Target audience:*
The program brings together participants from all over the world and from diverse legal backgrounds, i.e. law students near completion of their law degree, law graduates and legal professionals, who are seeking further credentials and experience in the field. It may be particularly appealing to government officials and those aiming at a career in national, international and/or European civil service, and those who wish to apply for jobs in the field of European Union law.

Fellowship on "Corporations and Citizenship" at The University of Pennsylvania

Beginning in January 2011, the Penn Program on Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism (DCC) will welcome applications for a one-year DCC Postdoctoral Fellow in any discipline whose research is pertinent to the Program's 2011-2012 theme, "Corporations and Citizenship. " The
Program welcomes both empirical and normative scholarship.

The Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism program is an interdisciplinary initiative, funded by the Mellon Foundation, which includes a faculty seminar series and annual conference on themes chosen by the Program's Faculty Advisory Council; a graduate workshop series; and undergraduate research grants. The DCC Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to participate in the faculty seminar series, teach a Freshman Seminar on a related topic, and attend monthly meetings to discuss the progress of undergraduates receiving research grants. The Fellow also has the opportunity to pursue the Fellow's research and study and participate generally in the intellectual life of the Penn community. Stipend is $53,800, plus health insurance.

The PhD student will make use of the extensive data sets to identify gene and protein interactions that might be of importance for the development and progression of the disease. Potential interactions and mechanisms of regulation will be validated by the student using a variety of laboratory techniques such as analysis of expression and epigenetic modifications, promoter activity assays, transcription factor binding sites, co-immunoprecipitat ions in in vitro model systems (cell culture) as well as in tissue samples. For validated targets, blood/plasma based assays for early detection, tumour classification, risk assessment and treatment decisions will be developed.

Job description. You prepare a Ph.D. thesis of the research project described below. You contribute to the research of the Department of Marketing and the Business Statistics Research Unit. You write scientific articles on the subject of your thesis. You have a limited number of teaching duties.

Project description. Advertisers face the decision how much to spend on advertising and how to allocate these resources across media types in order to achieve the best results. The project investigates the impact of advertising investments, media mix allocation and advertising share of voice on short-term advertising and brand effects, on consumer activation (gathering extra
information, visiting websites and generating word-of-mouth), and on their impact on long-term brand effects. The studies are based on a large, detailed and growing database made available for academic research by a large commercial broadcaster. This database combines data on real-life advertisements: measures of ad recall, recognition and attribution, short-term and long-term brand effects (brand attitude and brand equity) and customer activation measures, and
data on advertising spending in all mass media for large samples of consumers over a long period of time and for a great variety of brands, product categories and advertising campaigns. The analysis of this data requires state-of-the- art statistical models due to the presence of categorical outcomes and the resulting need for non-linear statistical models, the multi-level
nature of the data and the usefulness of mixture-amount models as a novel technique to assess optimal media mixes for different levels of advertising investments.

Profile and requirements. You have a Masters degree or equivalent in (business) economics, commercial engineering, econometrics or applied statistics. Your research and teaching skills are compatible with the policies of the University of Antwerp. You can provide evidence of an excellent academic record. You can express yourself well in written and spoken English. You share our enthusiasm for scientific research.

Our offer. We offer a full-time position, under the conditions of the Dehousse grants, as a doctoral fellow for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation. CfP: UACES Student Forum Conference, University of Surrey, 30 June

New Frontiers in European Studies: UACES Student Forum conference, University of Surrey, 30 June – 1 July 2011.

The UACES Student Forum is organising its Twelfth Annual Conference, on 30 June – 1 July 2011 at the University of Surrey. This two day conference aims to provide a friendly environment in which postgraduate students can gain experience of presenting research and develop contacts with other researchers in their field. The conference is aimed at research students of all levels and proposals are welcome from all students working in the field of European Studies within various disciplines. Some established academics and/or postdoctoral researchers will also be present to provide feedback and there will be a number of keynote speakers who have contributed extensively to the development of European Studies.

There is no registration fee to attend the conference but delegates would be expected to pay for a conference dinner on the 30th June (optional to attend) with a budget of about £25.

Thanks to an extra funding provided by the European Commission, two nights accommodation for all selected participants will also be covered (on the 29th and 30th of June), and travel within the UK to the conference will be refunded, up to a maximum of £100. If travelling from outside the UK and travel is expected to cost more than this, then please contact:

In order to submit abstract proposals for both panels and papers please complete the Paper Submission Form (which can be downloaded from http://www.uacesstudentforum.org/) and then submit by clicking the `Submit by Email' button in the top-right corner of the document. The deadline for submission of proposals is 15 March 2011. Successful applicants can expect to hear back by the beginning of April.

Postgraduate students may propose a paper individually. The Student Forum Committee will organise papers proposed in this manner into panels. We also encourage students to form pre-organised panels by using the Student Forum's Euroresearch mailing list to contact other paper-givers. Panels should contain one Chair (who is not presenting a paper) and three paper-givers. The proposals should include a summary of the overall theme and objective of the panel (max.200 word) along with a 200-word abstract for each of the three papers in the submission form. Proposals should be submitted by the Convenor (usually the chair or a paper-giver) of the panel with the agreement of all other participants. The panel submission form can be downloaded from http://www.uacesstudentforum.org/.

As a condition of the travel and accommodation grant, please note that all presenters who have been selected are required to provide a working paper in advance of the conference. The deadline for the submission of papers is the 20th June 2011. Papers should be no more than 8000 words (including footnotes). Description: The PhD scholarship thesis aims at developing, in partnership with a clinical-research team, a series of original diagnostic tests and a therapeutic monitoring of type 1 diabetes. In comparison with existing technology, the goal of this work is to develop rapid tests (less than 5 hours), quantitative and easy-to-use in clinical routine.

If an early and efficient diagnostic test for diabetes is important, it is even more critical to get a reliable test allowing to evaluate the beta cell mass. That's the reason why, in parallel, and in order to improve the management and the quality of life for diabetic patients, we will try to develop a preclinical imaging agent for the beta cells utilizing antibodies produced in our laboratory.

CfP: Social Sciences, Humanities and Higher Education in Eastern Eastern Europe after 1991

The European Humanities University (EHU), and its Center for Advanced Studies and Education, welcome submissions for our international conference - Social Sciences, Humanities and Higher Education in Eastern Europe after 1991 - to be held in Vilnius, 14-16 June 2011.

The conference will be a consolidated reflection on the development of social sciences, humanities and education over twenty years in Eastern Europe. The dramatic events of 1989-1991, coinciding with substantial social changes in the world as a whole, forced the Eastern European intellectual community to respond to a number of urgent challenges. The conditions of survival of fragments of the formerly monolithic and unified system of science and education were significantly different, which inevitably led to different strategies of adaptation. The goal of the conference is not merely the reconstruction of the general picture of this era of change, but rather to provide a critical analysis of transformation processes and to attempt to sketch in possible trends in future development.

The crash of the socialist system and Marxist ideology resulted in a collapse of communist social theory. What has filled this vacuum that suddenly appeared? To what extent was the gap bridged between "communist" and "bourgeois" concepts formed over decades? How has the language of social sciences and humanities changed? And to what extent is it now sufficient as a means of scholarly communication beyond the post-socialist space? What theoretical models could be useful for Eastern European countries, taking into account that Western social theory is not able to cope with its own challenges of modernity?

The disintegration of the Soviet Union and other socialist states challenged intellectual communities to construct adequate modern projects of nation-building. Social sciences, humanities and education were given a reading role in the revival of national identity and national languages. How far have scholars fulfilled this mission? In what way do their practices of working with post-colonial traumas relate to ideas of democracy and the principles of civil society?

The commercialization of higher education has primarily affected the spheres of social sciences and humanities. The mass training of lawyers, economists, diplomats, psychologists, etc. has had a strongly negative impact on the quality of education. In turn, this has resulted in a decline in prestige and a devaluation not only of the social sciences and humanities, but of higher education in general. Are there mechanisms to counter these trends? Are there current examples of the successful management of quality in education in the fields of social sciences and humanities? What forms of education development are able to respond to new trends in the area of
knowledge? What is the role of network universities, and the European Humanities University in particular, in these processes?

Post-communist reality has led to the erosion of old forms of research management within Academies of Sciences. A number of parallel and alternative projects provoked ever-increasing fragmentation of intellectual communities. What is the destiny of research institutions of the soviet era? Are there successful models of modernization of this sector? What role do scholarly journals play in transformations of social sciences and humanities? To what extent do academic periodicals contribute to the development of intellectual communities?

In the past twenty years the context of the individual academic career has substantially changed. In a number of post-socialist states soviet institutions like the Higher Attestation Committee (or VAK) still play an enormous role in academic life. Should VAK be transformed or eliminated altogether? How is the quality of research to be maintained if so?

*Weaving Models of Computations into models with MARTE/CCSL*

*About the position*
The Clock Constraint Specification Language (CCSL) was initially defined in an annex of the UML profile for MARTE to extend the mainly untimed UML with a rich and expressive time model adequate for the design and analysis of real-time and embedded systems. While a model represents a syntactic structure, it should come together with a set of execution rules reflecting causal and timed relationships, i.e., its Model of Computation (MoC). Usually the MoC is implicit and informal or hidden in tools implementation, thus preventing semantic-aware transformations. CCSL was devised to address this issue by providing a domain-specific modeling language dedicated to express causal and timed relationships explicitly in a model.

*Mission*
In its current use, CCSL models are associated with other syntactic models through references. Two main issues have still to be addressed. First, how can the MoC be instanciated on the model from a description realized at the meta-model level, rather than a manual instanciation for each model. Second, how can several MoCs be composed by weaving them together in an intrusive way, i.e., by considering or predicting the emerging properties of this composition.

*Applicant profile*
The successful applicant should be familiar with model-driven engineering techniques and preferably also familiar with embedded systems design. The position can open any time during the year 2011 and last for one year. Time extensions are possible and depends on achievements.

Background

In the last few years, sustainability issues have been receiving more attention than ever before among all stakeholders of the society including researchers, policy makers, companies and NGOs. Frontrunners in sustainable energy, in sustainable materials and manufacturing and in sustainable services are currently setting the stage. The range of (technology) options offering opportunities for sustainable development is rapidly expanding. The boundary conditions, including economic parameters such as the oil price and policy goals are subject to change. Methodologies for monitoring sustainability are being developed, tested and applied. STS is active in this dynamic field of research covering all all three areas of sustainability. The prime focus is on environmental aspects, followed by economic assessment and, to a limited extent, also social aspects are covered.

Job description

Bio-based materials represent a new, rapidly developing area which is seen as one of the cornerstones of a bio-based economy next to biofuels and other forms of bioenergy. The objective is to develop and to apply novel, bio-based materials with low environmental footprint, favourable economics and advantageous social effects. Companies of the chemical sector and the agricultural sector are teaming up to produce such materials which are expected to be used in large amounts in the consumer goods sector and the packaging industry. The developments have so far been limited to R&D and first stages of commercialization but given the very dynamic developments there is urgent need for a comprehensive assessment of the sustainability aspects.

The objectives of the project FEASIBLE (full title: Feasibility of End use Applications: Sustainability and techno-Economic aspects) closely link up to these needs. In the context of this project it will be your task to contribute to methodology development for the sustainability assessment of bio-based materials (esp. environmental and economic aspects) and to apply these methods to approximately four end applications of everyday life (e.g. injection moulded components and insulation materials). As part of your project work you will closely interact with researchers, developers and users of novel bio-based materials.

FEASIBLE is part of the large-scale project “Bio-based Performance materials” (BPM) which is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture.

Qualifications

You should have an M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in chemistry or physics, chemical/process engineering and/or environmental sciences. Experience with research on environmental issues (preferably LCA) and very good English language skills are indispensible prerequisites. Publications in scientific journals and experience in networking are considered as advantages.

Terms of employment

The candidates are offered a position for approximately four years. Next to research (90%) you will also contribute to teaching (10%).
