Task description

The research activities are part of an interuniversity collaboration between the institute VAXINFECTIO of the University of Antwerp, and the Center for Statistics, Hasselt University. The main interdisciplinary research themes are i) to improve and/or increase the understanding of the immune system, ii) to develop strategies for the containment of antibiotic resistance and iii) to develop new methodology in modeling infectious disease spread. Ph.D. in Supply Chain Management (SCM)

The Ph.D. program in Supply Chain Management IS NOW accepting applications for the fall 2012.

The Supply Chain Management (SCM) field covers the planning, execution, and control of strategic, tactical, and operational decisions involved in the movement of materials, services, resources, and information among and within organizations. Demand for SCM graduates has grown significantly in recent years and faculty salaries in the area are highly competitive.

Content and Length of Program

For the typical student the program requires a 4-year full-time commitment. During this period the student establishes residency (Section 7.80 of C. T. Bauer College of Business Policies - BCB policies) and employment outside the university is prohibited. Ph.D. students may be qualified to receive support from the university in the form of Assistantships. Students receiving assistantships are expected to serve 20 hours each week during the academic year as research and/or teaching assistants to the SCM faculty. Compensation ranges from $31,870 to $35,710, based on a $2100 per month stipend with annual increases through the third year, also on a fellowship during a student's first two years and teaching compensation thereafter, plus tuition waiver (less student-paid fees).

Research Focus and Placement

The doctoral program in Supply Chain Management at the University of Houston is designed to produce outstanding scholars/teachers who possess a breadth of understanding of the overall field as well as a depth of understanding in selected sub-fields within SCM. The program is designed to provide the necessary skills to enable graduates to have successful academic careers in which they contribute to the growing body of academic and practical SCM knowledge through sound research, and educate and instruct future scholars and business professionals in the SCM field. Past graduates have accepted faculty positions at the University of Southern California, The Ohio State University, George Mason University, Oakland University, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Lehigh University, the University of Glasgow, and the Air Force Institute of Technology.

Advisory Committee

The student's Advisory (coursework) Committee chairperson shall be named during the first semester of the student's enrollment in the program. Approval of the members of the Advisory Committee by the SCM Ph.D. Coordinator is required. This committee has primary responsibility for:

Structuring the coursework program and insuring that all program requirements and equivalencies are satisfied.
Monitoring the student's progress.
Supervising the oral comprehensive examination.

General Timeline and Milestones for Doctoral Studies in SCM

The Dissertation must be completed within four years of the comprehensive examination (college policy), and a student who fails to successfully defend a dissertation within six years of entering the program must retake the comprehensive examinations (college policy).
Required Examinations
Qualifying Examination

The purpose of the qualifying examination is to determine whether the student has achieved acceptable mastery of the Supply Chain Management field in order to continue in the program.

Each student has to complete a qualifying examination by the end of the first Spring semester of their studies. SCM faculty will assign the materials, design the qualifying examination questions and grade the questions. The examination is graded as a "pass" or a "fail". Failing the qualifying examination terminates the student's eligibility to continue in the program.
Comprehensive Examination

The purpose of the Comprehensive examination is to determine if the student has achieved acceptable mastery of the Supply Chain Management field in order to successfully complete a doctoral degree in this program. The comprehensive examination has a written and oral component.

Each student must complete the comprehensive examination by the end of the Fall semester of the third year of studies after completing the coursework specified in their degree plan (as specified by the College Ph.D. policies). SCM faculty will assign the materials, design the comprehensive examination questions and grade the questions. The examinations are graded as a "pass" or a "fail" and the student will be notified within the timeline specified by the College Ph.D. policies.

If the student has failed either the written or the oral part of the comprehensive examination, they have the right to retake it within six months of the notification. Only one reexamination is allowed.
Annual Review

Consistent with Bauer Guidelines, each candidate will be formally evaluated on an annual basis. This evaluation will encompass the following aspects of the students' performance:

Performance in coursework.
Performance as a teaching/research assistant.
Performance in research and participation in the DISC related research seminar series
Progress toward completion of degree.

Form of the Evaluation

The evaluation will be conducted by the SCM Ph.D. coordinator with input from SCM faculty. After considering all relevant information including, but not limited to, that provided by the chairperson of that candidate's Advisory Committee or Dissertation Committee and the student's faculty research or teaching mentors, one of four recommendations will be made to the Associate Dean for Academic and Research Programs:

The candidate's progress is satisfactory in all regards, and the candidate should be retained in the program.
The candidate's progress is unsatisfactory in some regards, and the candidate should be carefully counseled and monitored to eliminate these deficiencies.
The candidate's progress is unsatisfactory and gives cause for serious concern, and the candidate should be placed on probation with a specified time for correcting the noted deficiencies.
The candidate's progress does not warrant continuation in the program and the candidate should be dismissed from the program.

Written copies of the evaluation will be transmitted to the candidate, the chairperson of that candidate's Advisory Committee or Dissertation Committee, and the Associate Dean for Academic and Research Programs.

Dismissal from Program

In the event that the recommendation is dismissal from the program, a majority vote by the tenure-track faculty in the SCM area is required. Consistent with Bauer Guidelines, the action of dismissing a candidate from doctoral program is the responsibility of the Associate Dean for Academic and Research Programs.

Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University Invites Applications for Human Rights Advocates Program

The Human Rights Advocates Program, an initiative of the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University, is a capacity-building program designed to strengthen the skills,
knowledge, and networks of proven human rights defenders at the grassroots level. The program focuses both on strengthening the skills of the individual advocates and providing the tools for them to build sustainable organizations that advocate for disadvantaged peoples.

The 2012 HRAP will begin in the latter half of August and run until mid-December 2012. Advocates are expected to participate fully in the offerings provided by HRAP, including skills workshops on advocacy planning and strategies, fundraising, press and media, and building sustainable organizations; Columbia University courses on human rights, public health, the environment, development, and labor rights; and meetings and networking opportunities with NGO staff, activists, policy makers, representatives of international institutions, and academics.

The program is designed for lawyers, journalists, doctors, teachers, social workers, community organizers, and other human rights activists working with NGOs on issues, including sexual and gender-based violence, domestic violence, minority rights, LGBT rights, labor rights, migration, health, social exclusion, environmental justice, and corporate social accountability.

Participants are selected on the basis of their previous work experience in human rights, commitment to the human rights field, and demonstrated ability to pursue graduate-level studies. Full-time students or government officials will not be considered.

Advocates must work at the grassroots level. Applicants from high-income countries will not be considered except for those representing marginalized communities. Fluency in English is required. Preference is given to those who have not previously had opportunities to travel and study internationally. Advocates must provide proof of institutional endorsement from their organizations for their participation in the program and must commit to returning to that
organization upon completion of the program. Only one application per organization should be submitted.

ISHR makes every effort to provide full fellowships to cover program costs as well as travel and housing. A reasonable stipend is also provided to cover basic costs.

Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Information Technology for Business Intelligence (IT4BI)

Erasmus Mundus is a certification of excellence which is delivered by the European community to the best international master programmes in Europe, and it is supported by very attractive scholarships.

Since its inception 20 years ago, Business Intelligence (BI) has become a huge industrial domain and a major economic driver, however overlooked by academics. The Erasmus Mundus Master Programme in Information Technology for Business Intelligence (IT4BI) aims at training computer scientists who understand and help develop the strategies of modern enterprise decision makers.

IT4BI is a 2-year, English-language programme jointly delivered by Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium, Universite Francois Rabelais Tours (UFRT) in France, Ecole Centrale Paris (ECP) in France, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Spain, and Technische Universitat Berlin (TUB) in Germany.

IT4BI targets students from all over the world with a Bachelor of Science (or a level equivalent to 180 ETCS) with major in Computer Science, as well as an English proficiency corresponding to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (e.g., TOEFL 580 or higher). Admission is granted on the basis of a selection procedure.

The first year of the programme is devoted to fundamentals: the first semester at ULB, the second one at UFRT. Then, all students participate to the European Business Intelligence Summer School (http://cs.ulb.ac.be/conferences/ebiss.html). In the third semester, the programme offers three specialisations at ECP, UPC and TUB and students move to the partner of the chosen specialisation. The fourth semester is dedicated to
the master's thesis and can be realised at either as a placement in industry, or as an internship in a research laboratory in any full or associated partner. Eventually, all students will be gathered in the workshop "Business Intelligence: Innovation Meets Research". Upon completion of the program, graduates will be awarded with a multiple degree, the national master's degrees from ULB, UFRT and the university of the specialisation.

The IT4BI programme opens in September 2012.

Ashoka Changemakers and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation抯 Pioneer Portfolio have launched a new competition, Innovations for Health: Solutions that Cross Borders, to promote healthcare solutions from anywhere in the world that have the potential to be applied in other countries to improve health and healthcare. The competition is intended to help build bridges toward a more accessible, cost-effective, consumer-engaged, and outcome-driven system of health services.

The competition is seeking breakthrough innovations such as those that deploy the full spectrum of healthcare workers and providers, thereby improving the capacity, reach, and quality of healthcare services; use simple low-cost interventions to improve medical, preventive, and dental care; help people find and access the health information, services, and providers they need through new tools and processes; provide high quality and personalized care in
non-traditional settings; and find new ways to engage patients in their care, particularly patients with chronic illnesses.

The competition' s organizers seek initiatives that have demonstrated impact, and are particularly interested in those that have the potential to help vulnerable and underserved populations in other countries that are experiencing similar barriers to health.

Three winners selected by a panel of expert judges will each receive $10,000. Entries received by the early deadline of December 12, 2011, will also be eligible to win one of two $500 awards and one of two private consulting sessions with industry experts.

Students can now apply for the Erasmus Mundus International Masters in Russian Central and East European Studies (IMRCEES) scholarships. We expect to be able to award up to 9 Category A (non-European) and 7 Category B (Eurpean) student scholarships.

CfP: Rethinking the Self: Transnational and Transdisciplinary Bioethical and Biopolitical Concerns

International symposium at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of Helsinki, Finland, 10–12 April 2012.

Keynote speakers include Prof. Beverley Skeggs, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK, and Dr. Jenny Slatman, Maastricht University, the Netherlands.

This international and interdisciplinary symposium addresses how cultural, medical and political understandings of the self are shifting and changing in contemporary societies. It explores how humanness is imagined and conceived in various symbolic systems of knowledge, and how gender, disability, class and ethnicity articulate these understandings. With a particular focus on how ideas of the flesh and national identity reconfigure experiences of the embodied self, the symposium aims to bring together scholars whose work engages with issues that range from medical and cultural technologies, globalisation, migration and neoliberalism to phenomenology and ethics, political ideologies and subjectivities, and theories of social transformation.

This symposium aims to create a transdisciplinary dialogue regarding the local and global changing understandings of and practices related to the self by bringing together speakers from a broad range of cultural, methodological, national, disciplinary and transnational foci. It seeks to further conversations and research on topical and vexing questions of the self, especially in relation to recent medical, cultural, technological, political, social and neo-colonial developments. With an emphasis on the biopolitics of bodies, machines and institutional
structures, the symposium also addresses the ethics of human selfhood, specifically how we define the human and what is at stake in our definitions of this now global being.

We welcome submissions for papers, poster-presentation s and artwork from a broad range of disciplines and fields of research. Topics can include, but are not limited to:

* Theories and technologies of the self
* Community belonging and violence
* Contemporary medical therapies, technologies and ethics (organ donation and transplantation, gene therapy, HIV therapies, etc.)
* Class dimensions of the self

CfA: Intl double degree program in Peace and Conflict Studies 2012-13

The University of Kent and University of Marburg are now accepting applications for the international double degree programme Peace and Conflict Studies for the 2012-2013 year.

This international double award is jointly offered by the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent and the Centre for Conflict Studies at the University of Marburg. Upon successful completion of the programme students will be awarded an MA degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from Kent University and an MA degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Marburg. The two year full-time programme encompasses 120 ECTS credits (240 Kent credits). The programme includes a mandatory internship of at least 10 weeks. The Master dissertation is jointly supervised and marked by academic staff at Kent and Marburg. This multidisciplinary programme features compulsory modules on theories of conflict, conflict resolution, research methods/methods of conflict analysis and intergroup conflicts. Optional modules cover a wide range of topics including negotiation, mediation, diplomacy, development, critical approaches to peace and conflict studies, international political economy, foreign policy, human rights and terrorism. Students will spend the first year at Kent University and the second year at Marburg University where courses are taught in English. Thus, international
students do not need to speak German to study in Marburg.

Alternatively, fluent German speakers can opt to spend the first year in Marburg where compulsory courses will be taught in German and spend the second year in Canterbury. The universities do not operate on a system of deadlines for applying to this programme. We do recommend submitting applications by the end of June 2012. Nonetheless, applications received after this date will still be accepted.

The Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School of Literary Studies is the only graduate school focusing solely on literary studies to have been successful in the "Excellence Initiative". It has as its aim the supervision of exceptional dissertation projects in the field of Literary Studies, examining European, American, Arabic and Asian literary texts, within the doctoral degree program "Literary Studies". The projects should be well grounded in theory and should adopt an
historical and/or inter- or transcultural approach. The program offers intensive and individual supervision of the thesis as well as coursework. Applicants must have a completed degree (M.A. or equivalent) with above-average grades in the humanities, preferably literary studies. German and English are the favoured working languages in the international doctoral program.

Doctoral candidates take part in activities which support them in their research within their individual disciplines, at the same time placing this research in an interdisciplinary context. These activities include:

* Seminars on methodology and literary theory

Both Conflict and Memory Studies have, in recent years, become of increasing interest across the Humanities and Social Sciences; as they generate compelling dialogues between fields of study and build on the interdisciplinary turn in contemporary academe. This event will create a space that will allow for two things. The first is the development of opportunities for discussion across academic and cultural spheres. This will come about through the analysis and presentation of the representations and conceptualizations of violent conflict and memory addressed by emerging scholars seeking new networks and approaches to research. Secondly, it will include voices from outside academia that can provide new insight and potential empirical challenges to
theoretical discussion.

This event will gather together new researchers from the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences – and is especially designed to bring together individuals from disciplines that do not traditionally intersect (e.g. Visual Culture and Socio-Legal Studies) and also partially encourages those outside academia(especially those in the visual arts) to participate. The conference will allow mutually beneficial input and new ways of addressing the praxis of Conflict and Cultural Memory through the presentation of and analysis of both objects and concepts.

When reflecting on the proposed theme, Post War Reckoning, Memorialisation, Institutions, Artefacts and the Semiotics of Collective Memory, for example, offer a wide territory for
investigation, especially when combined with the study of cultural representations of these themes. We are seeking interested participants from across and outside the academic spectrum to
contribute to the creation of new and productive dialogues.

The Research Training Group investigates fundamental problems in the area of sensor-actuator- networks. sensor-actuator- networks has mainly focused on isolated aspects. One strong objective of the Training Group is to obtain integrated solutions that cover several aspects. Due to the customized curriculum, PhD students will obtain a broad overview within the area of self-organizing sensor-actuator- networks. In addition to lectures on specialized topics, a series of short lectures, seminars, and laboratory experiments are available. Weekly meetings are conducted in order to support the team-building process. Furthermore, the PhD students have the possibility to perform exchange stays at labs of other international researchers.

The Research Training Group is looking for bright and very motivated graduate students with excellent grades. Conectas Human Rights (Brazil) and the Regional Coalition on Citizen Security and Human Rights[1] invites all interested authors to submit articles for the Special Issue of Sur Journal (No. 16, first half of 2012) that will address the following topic: Citizen security and human rights.

Sur - International Journal on Human Rights is published twice a year and distributed free of charge to approximately 2,400 readers in over 100 countries. It is edited in three languages: English, Portuguese and Spanish; and can be fully accessed online at the website www.surjournal.org.

The goal of the journal is to provide a Global South perspective on human rights and to promote dialogue among human rights professors and activists in the Global South region, although without disregarding contributions from other parts of the world.

SUR is indexed in the following databases: IBSS (International Bibliography of the Social Sciences); DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals); Scielo and SSRN (Social Science Research Network). The journal is also available in the following commercial databases: EBSCO and HEINonline.

CITIZEN SECURITY AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Issue number 16 of Sur proposes to open up the debate on the potentials and difficulties of establishing citizen security paradigms and public policies from a human rights perspective. We invite authors to submit articles that can contribute to this debate, whether by presenting a critical view of citizen security and human rights, proposals to reform security policies based on successful case studies or critical analyses of the setbacks and unsuccessful experiences on the national and/or regional level.

Although this list is not all-inclusive, we shall consider of special interest articles that address:

1. The militarization of security: involvement of the armed forces in citizen security activities and tensions related to the boundary between defense and internal security. Analyses, responses and recommendations from a perspective of human rights and the role of human rights organizations;
2. The impact of citizen participation in security policies and community policing from a human rights perspective;
3. Organized crime and police involvement. Corruption and institutional violence;
4. Failures of zero tolerance policies and demagogic punitive discourse;
5. Government handling of social conflicts. Use of security forces against social protests;
6. The role of non-state actors, state subordination to organized crime and its impact on human rights
7. Private security from a human rights perspective;
8. The use of lethal and quasi-lethal force by security agents;
9. Mechanisms for the control and accountability of security forces;
10. International and regional standards on citizen security and human rights, in particular the recent developments in the Organization of American States;
11. Prison and security policies in contexts of socio-economic inequality;
12. Equality and security: the relation between security policies and racial profiling;
13. Civil control of public security vs. police autonomy or delegation of the control of security policies to the security forces.

Note that this list is not all-inclusive, but merely presents the preferential topics. Issue number 16 of Sur Journal will also include articles on other human rights related topics besides the series on citizen security and human rights. Therefore, articles addressing other topics will also be considered.

SELECTION OF ARTICLES AND CREATIVE COMMONS

The articles submitted to Sur Journal are evaluated by external reviewers in a blind-review process (without knowing the name of the author). The final selection of the articles takes this external review into consideration and is based on a comparison of the articles submitted for each issue. Therefore, the Editorial Board does not give the reasons for rejecting articles.

Since distribution of the journal is free of charge, we unfortunately cannot remunerate the authors. Regarding copyright, Sur Journal uses the Creative Commons 2.5 license to publish articles (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/deed.pt), thereby preserving the rights of the author.

Contributions should be sent electronically (in Microsoft Word format) to the email address

- Maximum length of 70,000 characters (including footnotes);
- Footnotes must be concise (the rules for citation may be found at http://www.surjournal.org/rules12.php);
- Include short biography of the author (maximum 50 words);
- Include an abstract for the article (maximum 150 words) and keywords for bibliographic classification;
- Include the date the article was written.

Only submissions received by November 30 will be considered for Issue No. 16. Articles received after this date will be considered for the subsequent issue.

Opening Remarks by Cynthia Enloe

20th century has been a century of wars, genocides, and other forms of political violence. It has also been a century of feminist struggle and theorizing globally. At the peak of what is sometimes called the "memory boom," this conference seeks to explore the different ways in which wars, genocides, and other forms of political violence are remembered through a gender lens. Central questions include (but are not limited to):

- How have wars, genocides and other forms of political violence been narrated and represented by men and women?
- How do women remember and narrate sexual violence in war?
- How do (written, oral or visual) testimonies challenge or reinforce the hegemonic accounts of wars and genocides?
- How are wars memorialized and gendered through monuments, museums, and other memory sites?
- What is the impact of the ethnicization/ racialization of violence on the making of gendered memories?
- How is the relationship between the "personal" and the "public/national/ political" (re)conceptualized in popular culture, film, literature, and (auto)biographical texts dealing with war, genocide, and other forms of political violence?
- How are "humanitarian interventions, " post-conflict processes, and transitional justice gendered?
- How do women's, feminist, and LGBTQ movements contribute to critical memory work on wars?
- What kind of impact has feminist scholarship had on war and militarism studies, genocide studies, and memory studies?
- What new concepts or theoretical frameworks (queer? postcolonial? critical race studies?) promise new openings in feminist analyses of memory work on wars and genocides?

*Applications: *

The working language of the conference will be English. Scholars of all levels and from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to papers that deal with Europe (in the largest sense of the term) or Europe's connection to the discussed context, but other papers will also be considered.

Please submit an abstract (max. 500 words) outlining the relevance and novelty of your contribution, together with a 200 words resume.

Presenters will be required to submit their presentation in writing prior to the workshop. With the participation of Cynthia Enloe and other prominent scholars from the field as discussants, we are hoping for close engagement and critical debate during the workshop. Presenters will be encouraged to submit their revised papers for the special issue of the *European Journal of Women's Studies* on the same topic (to be edited by Altýnay and Petö).

There are limited funds for those participants who do not have other sources of funding to attend the workshop. When submitting your abstract, please indicate your need for any financial assistance. There are no registration fees. Lunch, tea and coffee will be provided for all participants.
