International Conference CALL FOR PAPERS "Concept of Eurasia" Date: 26 January 2007 Department of International & Comparative Politics (ICP) American University – Central Asia

Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic

The ICP Department envisions an international multi-disciplinary conference, dedicated in Memoriam for Viktoria Lavrova, consisting of a range of papers on the broad question of the conceptual transitions in Central Asia. Papers on competing conceptual understandings and explanations with regard to "Eurasia", the historical development of the Eurasia notion, its significance in the past and the present, the economic, political, strategic and institutional developments between the Kyrgyz and Turkish Republics are all welcome.

Submitted proposals must be no more than 350 words (one page), in English and include both a paper title, as well as an explanation of how the proposal is relevant to the conference theme

The aim of this Conference is to identify and discover a coherent explanation of Eurasia and to advance some evidence for this concept through an analysis of a case study. The Conference will be an intensive one-day event, which will be divided into three parts.

The morning session will venture into highlighting the concept of Eurasia, primarily focusing on the origins of the idea, its theoretical development and how it affects the contemporary debate.

The afternoon session will investigate as a case study of the theory the relationship between Kyrgyzstan and Turkey. Given the fact that Kyrgyzstan shares a linguistic and historical heritage with Turkey alongside common ethnicity and cultural traits alongside the fact that in political terms Turkey was the first country to recognize the independent Kyrgyz polity after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it is natural that these two countries be investigated to gather evidence for proving or falsifying the Eurasia concept. The third and final session will look at the implications of developing and following a Eurasia concept on third parties such as the EU, U.S.A and China.

Needless to say, this is an emerging conceptual and theoretical area and to do justice for a conference aiming for conceptual clarity and results of a particular case study, experts and interested scholars are encouraged to participate and share their findings with the audience. To cater for such an aim, regional and international researchers as well as domestic academics are invited to propose paper titles and hopefully attend in order to disseminate their findings.

Priority will be given to proposals, which take an original, creative approach to the specific question related to the conference theme, considering it within the broad geographic area of Eurasia. Interdisciplinary proposals are more than welcome.

All materials must be submitted in electronic format no later than 25 December 2006 to sari_y@mail. auca.kg (Yasar Sari, Head of Department International & Comparative Politics American University – Central Asia). Results will be announced on 27 December 2006.
