A Special Issue of “The European Legacy”

“The European Legacy” hereby invites contributions on the topic of “Philosophy as Literature.”
The issue will feature a conversation on the relationship philosophy-literatu re with GIUSEPPE MAZZOTTA (Sterling Professor of the Humanities for Italian, Yale University), ALEXANDER NEHAMAS (Edmund N. Carpenter II Class of 1943 Professor in the Humanities, Princeton University) & SIMON CRITCHLEY (Professor of Philosophy, The New School for Social Research).

CALL FOR PAPERS:
Like novelists, historians or columnists, philosophers, too, are writers. They make sophisticated use of language, and employ – whether deliberately or not – specific rhetorical and stylistic devices, as well as certain repertoires of metaphors, images and symbols. As writers, philosophers also have to adjust their writing to specific audiences, tailor it to serve specific purposes, and strategically choose one genre over another, with all its rules, protocols, and constraints. In short, it is crucial for philosophers – if they are to persuade readers – to advance their ideas following certain aesthetic rules, rhetorical procedures and strategies of persuasion. This has led some authors to speak of “the literariness of philosophical texts” (Berel Lang) as something indistinguishable from the philosophical substance and relevance of those texts.
A writer’s relationship to language, writing and weaving of narratives in general is always complex. For, if we are to believe Heidegger, although “man acts as though he were the shaper and master of language, …in fact language remains the master of man.” Therefore, it might well be the case that – as often happen with writers – philosophers, too, go through some peculiar experiences: sometimes, for example, they become so completely seduced by language that they almost lose themselves in the act of writing and come to utter whatever language compels them to; some other times, they become so deeply caught up in their own discourse that it becomes difficult for them to separate from it: on such occasions they are not very different from those novelists who end up becoming characters in the narratives they are weaving.
The implication is that a work of philosophy might well be seen as a work of (literary) art, as an autonomous world, for whose creation the author’s personal vision, imagination, playfulness and inventiveness play a major role. In other words, according to this view, “The Critique of Pure Reason” is, in a fundamental way, much closer to “Hamlet” or “The Brothers Karamazov” than to, say, “On the Origin of Species.”
With this in mind, some scholars of philosophy have been in a position to say that philosophy is nothing other than literature. Others, more cautious, have allowed philosophy to be literature only to some degree or under circumstances. Then, there are, of course, those for whom philosophy does not have anything to do with literature.
We invite submissions dealing with the multifaceted relationship between philosophy and literature, some aspects of which have been pointed to above. Interdisciplinary approaches (combining, for example, philosophy, literary theory and intellectual history) are particularly encouraged.
Here are only some of the possible topics:
- The employment of literary categories (genre, tropes, narrative, plot, point of view, etc.) in the production of philosophical texts
- The genres of philosophical writing (dialogue, treatise, meditation, journal article, etc) and their significance for the content of those writings; how exactly the adoption of a certain genre shapes the philosophizing in question
- Philosophical styles: styles of writing / styles of philosophizing; “the anatomy of the philosophical style” (Berel Lang)
- The variety of literary practices in the history of philosophy
- The philosophers’ rhetoric; philosophy of rhetoric / rhetoric of philosophy
- Canons and canonization in the history of philosophy
- Author/authorship/ authority in the production of philosophical texts; author’s “voice”; the use of personae, masks, masquerades;
- Philosophy as expression of the self (philosophy and autobiography)
- The art of the “literary philosophers” (Plato, Augustine, Giordano Bruno, Vico, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Unamuno, Benjamin, Sartre, Camus, Cioran, etc)
- Recent philosophizing on the relationship philosophy-literatu re (contributions dedicated to the work of Jacques Derrida, Richard Rorty, Paul Ricoeur, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Theodor Adorno, Stanley Cavell, Alexander Nehamas, Slavoj Zizek, Jean-Luc Nancy, Berel Lang, Iris Murdoch, Simon Critchley, etc)
- Literary theorists/historian s on the relationship philosophy-literatu re (contributions dedicated to the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, Roland Barthes, Rene Wellek, Wolfgang Iser, Hayden White, Giuseppe Mazzotta, Umberto Eco, etc)

Length: 6000 words
All articles and reviews submitted to “The European Legacy” undergo peer-review. Manuscripts and Notes, typed double-spaced, should be submitted to the Guest Editor as e-mail attachments, using WordPerfect or Microsoft Word. The author’s full address should be supplied as a footnote to the title page. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition.

Proiect intercultural "Dialog fara frontiere"
Asociatia Europeana pentru Apararea Drepturilor Omului (AEPADO) si Revista
„Fisierele tinerilor” organizeaza proiectul „Dialog fara frontiere” pentru a marca Anul European al Dialogului Intercultural – 2008.
Proiectul contine 12 concursuri ce promoveaza tinerele talente si legaturile interculturale: eseuri, creatie literara, interpretare muzicala, streetdance, dansuri traditionale, improvizatie, teatru, film, grafica, fotografie, informatica si cultura generala.
La concursuri pot participa, individual sau pe echipe, elevii claselor V-XII din Municipiul Bucuresti.
Organizatorii si sponsorii proiectului pun la bataie 170 de premii in valoare de peste 10.000 RON pentru cei mai talentati concurenti. Toti participantii si profesorii coordonatori vor primi diplome de participare.
Perioada de inscriere: 1 octombrie – 15 noiembrie 2008.

9 New Positions at IRAS, Utrecht University, NL.
Dear Colleagues,
Recently, we have successfully obtained several grants to study potential health effects of occupational, environmental and consumer exposure to electro magnetic fields. These studies address the exposure to stray fields from MR systems, RF-EMF from mobile phones, base stations, WIFI and DECT phones and ELF-EMF exposure from power lines and consumer products and will focus on several health outcomes
including cancer and neurological disorders. The research is being funded by the ZonMw National Research Programme on Electromagnetic Fields and Health and the 7th Research Framework Program of the European Union. The ZonMw research programme has also funded a chair in Epidemiology of Health Effects of Electro Magnetic Fields within IRAS.
The aim of the ZonMw National Research Program is to keep track of new and existing EMF applications, such as MRI, mobile phone and WIFI use and to enhance the national knowledge infrastructure in the field of electromagnetic fields and health. Research projects will be carried out in extensive collaboration with several national and international research institutions.
In order to be able to perform the studies within this new, ambitious and unique research field we are seeking inspired candidates for 6 PhD research positions, 2 Post Doc position, an assistant professorship and a data managament position (see attached PDF and links).

You will be working in a multidisciplinary team to discover the genetic factors that play a role in the development of eating disorders. Advanced molecular genetic techniques will be used in mice studies to identify and functionally test novel genes for relevant neurobehavioral traits. Gene association studies in human eating disorder populations will also be performed. The research will lead to the degree of Ph.D.

Job description
There is currently a fast-growing interest in 'plasmonic' systems, where light is confined with metallic nanostructures. Due to the strong interaction of the nanostructures and the light field, novel properties arise, called surface plasmons. These are vigorously pursued with the goal to realize ultimate-small optical integrated circuits, or highly sensitive sensors for medicine and biology.
While plasmons have many exciting optical properties, they have a propagation length (or lifetime) that is limited, notably by radiative losses. Therefore, we wish to control plasmonic properties by modifying the environment of the whole plasmonic system. To this end, we will place the plasmonic system inside a photonic crystal. Photonic crystals have a demonstrated ability to control radiative lifetimes of matter such as quantum dots and dye molecules, as pioneered by our group (Nature 430 (2004) 654; Phys. Rev. B 75 (2007) 115302). So, will you be the matchmaker between plasmonics and photonic crystals?
The PhD student will devise and perform optical experiments, and interpret results using modern theory. We also expect a PhD student to supervise undergraduate students in our group. Your research initiatives will be strongly appreciated. This research project is part of the FOM programme Plasmonics, in collaboration with several Dutch University teams.
The research is conducted in a group of enthusiastic young people and inspiring colleagues. We use state-of-the- art optical facilities including tuneable ultrafast lasers and advanced photonic materials.

The successful candidate is an experimental scientist who holds a masters degree in physics or physical chemistry, preferably with experience in photonic crystals, nanophotonics or advanced optics. The successful candidate interacts easily with scientists from various disciplines and institutes.

The Photonic Bandgap Group (PBG) strives to perform world-class research on light propagation and spontaneous emission in photonic crystals. We combine advanced optical experiments with the development of photonic nanostructures and with a deep theoretical understanding of the properties of light. In 2004 we have pioneered experiments wherein both the direction and time of light emission are controlled, and we have been the first to optically switch photonic band gaps at ultrafast times, in 2007. Our curiosity-driven research is of interest to several industrial partners, and to applications in biophysics. Our group's research is performed in the Center for Nanophotonics at the FOM Institute AMOLF in Amsterdam. We closely collaborate with the group Complex Photonic Systems at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Twente.

Job description
There is currently a fast-growing interest in 'plasmonic' systems, where light is confined with metallic nanostructures. Due to the strong interaction of the nanostructures and the light field, novel properties arise, called surface plasmons. These are vigorously pursued with the goal to realize ultimate-small optical integrated circuits, or highly sensitive sensors for medicine and biology.
While plasmons have many exciting optical properties, they have a propagation length (or lifetime) that is limited, notably by radiative losses. Therefore, we wish to control plasmonic properties by modifying the environment of the whole plasmonic system. To this end, we will place the plasmonic system inside a photonic crystal. Photonic crystals have a demonstrated ability to control radiative lifetimes of matter such as quantum dots and dye molecules, as pioneered by our group (Nature 430 (2004) 654; Phys. Rev. B 75 (2007) 115302). So, will you be the matchmaker between plasmonics and photonic crystals?
The PhD student will devise and perform optical experiments, and interpret results using modern theory. We also expect a PhD student to supervise undergraduate students in our group. Your research initiatives will be strongly appreciated. This research project is part of the FOM programme Plasmonics, in collaboration with several Dutch University teams.
The research is conducted in a group of enthusiastic young people and inspiring colleagues. We use state-of-the- art optical facilities including tuneable ultrafast lasers and advanced photonic materials.

The successful candidate is an experimental scientist who holds a masters degree in physics or physical chemistry, preferably with experience in photonic crystals, nanophotonics or advanced optics. The successful candidate interacts easily with scientists from various disciplines and institutes.

The Photonic Bandgap Group (PBG) strives to perform world-class research on light propagation and spontaneous emission in photonic crystals. We combine advanced optical experiments with the development of photonic nanostructures and with a deep theoretical understanding of the properties of light. In 2004 we have pioneered experiments wherein both the direction and time of light emission are controlled, and we have been the first to optically switch photonic band gaps at ultrafast times, in 2007. Our curiosity-driven research is of interest to several industrial partners, and to applications in biophysics. Our group's research is performed in the Center for Nanophotonics at the FOM Institute AMOLF in Amsterdam. We closely collaborate with the group Complex Photonic Systems at the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, University of Twente.

You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with FOM.
A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of 10% of your time). Social constructivism stresses dialogue in learning, with this taking place via an active process of constructing meaning. By following a participatory Change Laboratory methodology, workers, in collaboration with the researcher, will develop a deep understanding of why incidents have occurred and how they can be prevented in the future. Applying deep learning into practice will help develop a safer workplace environment and create a generative organisation.

Employment basis: Temporary for specified period
Duration of the contract: 36 months
Additional conditions of employment:
There is a stipend of £13,900 per annum in the first year, rising to £14,746 in year 3. Each year's stipend shall be payable to the fellow in four equal quarterly payments on 1 October, 1 January, 1 April and 1 July respectively of each year. In addition, the funding organisation will cover fellow's PhD fees. Travel and subsistence expenses for carrying out data collection, progress and evaluation meetings in the testbeds will be covered by the funder/sponsoring organisation. The programme meets the new academic requirements imposed by the so-called Bologna process.
The legal focus of the programme is on the broader ambit of European integration, also touching upon different economic and political aspects of the integration process and duly considering their legal and practical implications. Thereby, education in EU Business Law matters will be advanced and will contribute to extending the profile and the pool of professionals, acquainted with EU Business Law and therefore competent, to actively participate in the implementation of the Acquis.
The programme will provide students with necessary skills to deal with legal issues related to the accession of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia to the EU and encourage students to develop a critical awareness of the operation of European Law. The closing date for all submissions is 3 November 2008.
The World Summit will review the 'state of play' in public management education, training and development and consider its future directions in the twenty-first century.
We are looking for contributions from academics, educators and trainers, policy makers and public management practitioners. These contributions may take one of four types:
- Research findings and evidence about effective public management education and training,
- Papers that offer concept and theories deepening our understanding of public management education and development,
- Contributions from educators and trainers, whether university or practice based, about effective public management education and training practice, and
- Papers and contributions presenting case studies and reflections from first hand experience of the practice of
public management education and training.
Contribution formats
Contributions can be in one of three formats. First, they can be paper submissions for one of the 'open track' paper sessions. Second they can be proposals for workshops of between 3 - 6 presenters that offer an integrated approach to a topic of interest in pubic management education and training. Third they can be innovative sessions that address a topic of interest in public management education and training in a creative and engaging manner.

- Papers that offer concept and theories deepening our understanding of public management education and development,
- Contributions from educators and trainers, whether university or practice based, about effective public management education and training practice, and
- Papers and contributions presenting case studies and reflections from first hand experience of the practice of
public management education and training.
Contribution formats
Contributions can be in one of three formats. First, they can be paper submissions for one of the 'open track' paper sessions. Second they can be proposals for workshops of between 3 - 6 presenters that offer an integrated approach to a topic of interest in pubic management education and training. Third they can be innovative sessions that address a topic of interest in public management education and training in a creative and engaging manner.
Proposals
Proposals in any of these formats are invited on all topics of interest in public management education, training and development but would be especially welcome in the following areas:

- Short course development and the role of executive education
- Collaboration between universities and public service agencies
- Innovative approaches to teaching public management

- Public policy and the funding of public management education and training
- The role and development of case studies in public management education
- Education and training and its role/impact in public management and public services reform
- Capacity building and knowledge transfer between the higher education and policy and practice sectors
- Evaluating the impact of public management education and training
Practice based developments
- Training needs assessment for public managers
- The role of the training manager
- Using
training and development to manage change in public service organizations
- Recruiting and selecting public managers
- The role of education and training in succession planning for public managers
- Education and training for Third Sector organizations
- Education and training and the management of diversity in public service organizations
- Innovative methods of delivering training for public service managers
Submission process.
Proposals should be a maximum of two pages long in 12 point font and must be suitable for blind/anonymous review. They should specify which of the above three formats they are intended to fulfil.
Proposals should be submitted through the EFMD conference website at http://prs6. efmd.org
Authors will be notified of the outcome of their submission by 28th November 2008.
The closing date for registration will be the end of February 2009.

There is strong and two way interaction between public spaces and their users. The physical and social structure of public spaces are advocating certain uses and users while on the other hand users form and re-create the public spaces through the sheer act of using them according to their needs and pleases. Therefore any intrusion let it be physical, design based, regulatory or hygienic into a public space will prefer or advocate some groups while it could drive out other users, and thus create tensions between present and future user-groups.
It is of vital importance therefore to understand how the space and its users interact and what happens when there is a radical physical intervention in the physical space. How it is possible to influence the social environment of a public space or in contrary how are changing social environments influence the perception of a given public space. The different stakeholders and what their interests are should be evaluated and taken into account when regenerating a public space. Put is more precisely to understand how changing aspirations and claims are articulated and how is it possible to act upon them and recreate public space.
We would like to invite contributions, papers about the multifaceted uses of urban public space, and especially focusing on changing perspectives. Papers dealing with the following three sub-topics are encouraged.

Reagan-Fascell Democracy Program for Practitioners & Scholars
Named in honor of NED's principal founders, former president Ronald Reagan and the late congressman Dante Fascell, the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program was established in 2001 with funding from the U.S. Congress to enable democratic activists, practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world to deepen their understanding of democracy and enhance their ability to promote democratic change. Fellows are in residence at the Forum and participate in the collegial life of the Endowment and in the many opportunities for professional exchange in Washington, D.C.
The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is intended primarily for practitioners and scholars from emerging and aspiring democracies. Distinguished scholars from the United States and other established democracies are also eligible to apply. The program offers five-month fellowships for practitioners to improve strategies and techniques for building democracy abroad and five- to ten-month fellowships for scholars to conduct original research for publication. While the two tracks share many common elements, they have different eligibility requirements and distinct goals, activities, and products associated with them.
The Practitioner Track
The Reagan-Fascell program was established with the primary purpose of supporting democracy activists, human rights advocates, journalists, and others who work on the frontlines of building democracy in emerging and aspiring democracies. The program provides practitioners with a needed break from their daily routine so that they may reflect on their work, learn from counterparts in the United States, and reevaluate techniques for building democracy in their country of origin.
The Scholarly Track
In recognition of the importance of intellectual contributions to the theory and practice of democracy, the Reagan-Fascell program offers a scholarly track for scholars, professors, and established writers. Applicants for this track may be scholars from emerging and aspiring democracies or accomplished scholars from the United States and other = established democracies.

Eligibility Requirements
The Practitioner Track:
Applicants interested in the practitioner track are expected to have substantial practical experience working to promote democracy or human rights in their country of origin or interest. There are no specific degree requirements for the practitioner track. A Ph.D., for instance, is not required of practitioner applicants. While there are also no age limits, applicants on the practitioner track are typically mid-career professionals with several years of professional experience in the field of democracy and human rights. Examples of eligible candidates for the practitioner track include human rights advocates, political party activists, professional staff of civic or humanitarian organizations, international lawyers,
journalists, labor leaders, politicians, and diplomats.
Practitioner fellowships are typically five months in duration and culminate in a strategic policy memorandum, short article or op-ed, as well as a formal presentation of the fellow's analysis and ideas.
The Scholarly Track:
Applicants interested in the scholarly track are expected to possess a doctorate (a Ph.D., or academic equivalent) at the time of application, to have published in their field of expertise, and to have developed a detailed research outline for their fellowship project. Examples of eligible candidates for the scholarly track include college and university professors, analysts at research centers and "think tanks," and independent writers. Occasionally, a professional who is planning to
write a book or other scholarly publication may qualify to apply on the scholarly track.
English Language Requirement
A working knowledge of English is an important prerequisite for participation in the program. While the fellow's primary product may be in his/her native language, it is expected that he/she will have a solid command of written and spoken English for general communication purposes. All application materials must be submitted in English (or accompanied by an English translation) .

State Department Announces "Doors to Diplomacy" 2009
International Web Project Competition for Middle School and High School Students
The Department of State and the Global SchoolNet Foundation announce the 2009 "Doors to Diplomacy" award competition, recognizing the student-created Global SchoolNet Web projects that best teach others about the importance of international affairs and diplomacy.
To qualify, middle school and high school students will work in small teams with teacher-coaches. Projects must be completed by March 15, 2009, and winners will be announced in May 2009. Every team that enters a project will receive a special "Doors to Diplomacy" certificate recognizing their achievement. Each student member of the two winning teams – one American and one international – will also
receive a $2,000 scholarship, and the winning coaches' schools will each receive a $500 cash award.

Located in downtown Chicago, The John Marshall School Law School offers more than 40 courses in international economic and trade law. Taught by some of the leading practitioners and academics in the field from Chicago, Washington, DC, New York, California, Australia and Europe, these courses provide a strong foundation for lawyers wishing to specialize in international business and trade law.
Students enrolled in the program may design curricula that meet their individual professional needs. International students may complete the 24-credit program in two semesters (with an August starting date) or may take up to two years, taking a minimum of five credits per semester. The Joint JD/LL.M. Joint degree students will, in most cases, be able to complete the requirements of both programs with 104 credit hours. Joint degree students profit from taking classes with lawyers from a variety of backgrounds and practice experiences, both from the United States and overseas.

A 1955 graduate of The John Marshall Law School, Melamed is chairman emeritus and senior policy advisor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. The Melamed Fellowship in International Business and Trade Law is awarded to a full-time student in John Marshall's LL.M. Program in International Business and Trade Law. The Melamed Fellow is selected on the basis of academic merit and the potential for excellence in the field of international business and trade law. The Fellow receives one-half tuition, a paid research
assistantship in the Center for International Business and Trade Law, and a $10,000 stipend. The Fellow is expected to complete the degree program in one calendar year. The Melamed Fellowship is currently being awarded every other year.

Duke University's Fuqua School of Business welcomes applicants with demonstrated academic excellence, personal and professional accomplishments, proven leadership ability, and strong professional skills. The Duke MBA Program holds three admissions application rounds from November through March. Given the competitive applicant pool, students are encouraged to apply as early in the admission cycle as possible. Duke University's Fuqua School of Business welcomes applicants with demonstrated academic excellence, personal and professional accomplishments, proven leadership ability, and strong professional skills. The school also places a high value on candidates with diverse backgrounds and broader perspectives.
The Duke MBA Program holds three admissions application rounds from November through March. Given the competitive applicant pool, students are encouraged to apply as early in the admission cycle as possible. Each candidate is required to submit an online application form, resume, essay, official GMAT score, and TOEFL or IELTS score (if applicable), transcript, two recommendations, and an application fee.
The school strongly recommends that prospective students have a personal interview with one of the alumni or admissions fellows (second-year students selected to serve on the admissions committee). Candidates are encouraged to come to campus for an interview, but offer applicants living on the west coast of the U.S. or internationally the option to request an interview with a local alumnus. All interviews are evaluated equally regardless of location of interviewer.
Merit-based scholarships and loans
Each year, a limited number of merit-based scholarships are available to all incoming students regardless of their citizenship. These awards are for the two-year duration of the program and range from partial to full tuition. It is important to apply in the first two rounds of admission to ensure consideration for available funds.
In addition to merit-based assistance, incoming students are eligible to apply for a combination of federal and alternative student loans to meet the cost of tuition, fees, books, and related living expenses. Of the many alternative loan programs available, The Duke MBA Opportunity Loan is a unique program for international students that enables them to borrow up to the cost of attendance without a U.S. loan cosigner.

PhD Studentships at the Institute of Cancer Research, UK
The Institute of Cancer Research (a College of the University of London) is a world-class cancer research organisation with HEFCE RAE ratings of international excellence across all of its research programmes. In partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust we form the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, dedicated to research that extends from epidemiology, genetics and molecular biology, through drug discovery and development, to cancer diagnosis and patient treatment. Applications for graduate studentships starting in October 2009 are invited from suitably-qualified graduates or final year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a first/upper second class honours degree or equivalent in Physics or a related subject. Successful candidates will undertake a four year research training programme under the guidance of named supervisors. Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend - £19,096 (inner London - Chester Beatty Laboratories, Fulham Road) or £17,770 (outer London - Sutton Campus).
