Open Call “Peace and diversity” Video Art Exhibition

Open to: all video artists and video creators (individuals, groups or organizations) of any nationality, sex, age and background.

Award: participation of artist’s project on first International Video Art Exhibition in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, in June 2011.

“Peace and diversity” Video Art Exhibition, is the first International video art exhibition presented in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek. Video Art Exhibition invites all video artists and video creators to participate in this year’s exhibition, which will take place in Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek in June 2011.

Theme
We defined theme of the exhibition as “Pease and diversity” as a reflection on the events happen in today’s world. Political, economic life influences on the changes in social behavior and the ways it influences are different as the results of it. As an act or reflection on the metamorphoses happen today we want to show how artist from different countries around the world perceive those events and world changes.

Eligibility
We are open to every creator (individuals, groups or organizations) of any nationality, sex, age and background.

Application

The proposed video can be of any genre (video art, experimental video, animation, photo presentation, short movie etc.). Duration under 35 minutes.

Applicants can apply their previous video-art works or create new original video composition.

There is no entry fee. Deadline: March 10, 2011.

Video works should be sending by post or be downloaded to the any free upload/download service or via your personal website putting passwords and sending link and password to us by e-mail.

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Academic disciplines have been routinely dominated, both in terms of research agendas and dissemination practices, by a concentration on a relatively small number of “canonical” thinkers and writings. A tacitly accepted “principle of economy” makes that, in our research, we (almost) always gravitate toward “canonical” authors, texts, and themes. Teachers, for instance, tend to persuade their students to pay attention to the “central” aspects of any given problem and stay away from the allegedly “marginal” or “peripheral” ones, which are thus deemed to be either too risky or otherwise unworthy of sustained consideration. Not surprisingly, we end up spending most of our time concentrating on what the academic community considers to be the “core-issues” in various academic disciplines, just as we tend to focus our projects on the study of various “mainstream” authors, “central” themes and “canonical” texts. As a result, our systems of reference – in scholarship, but also in every-day life, morality, art, politics and religion – have come to rely heavily on the assumption of an intrinsic superiority of the “center,” the “canonical” and the “mainstream,” to such an extent that “marginal” and “peripheral” are epithets customarily used with (and perceived as carrying) pejorative connotations.

This special issue of The European Legacy seeks to challenge this assumption. We surmise that there is a great deal of vitality and richness to be found both at the margins – wherever they may be and wherever they may be placed in relation to the centers of power – and in theorizing on marginality as a philosophical, literary, political, and hermeneutic trope. The center (or the core) exists only in relation to the margins: it is in fact from the margins that the center receives its recognition (there can be no center without margins), just as it is from the vitality of the margins that the center extracts its resources. Therefore, it is only by looking at things (events, cultures, ideas, texts, political and social processes) dialectically – that is, from both the perspective of the center and that of the margins, and especially as a result of the center-periphery dynamic – that we can better understand their role in the creation and dissemination of knowledge.

The central aim of this project is to offer a reconceptualization of marginality, by exploring how it is perceived, constructed, and deconstructed, and by examining the role it plays in the dynamic of knowledge production across humanistic disciplines. We propose to consider marginality in a broad sense, e.g., the marginality of an idea, of a scholarly topic or theme of research, of a methodology or way of thinking, as well as in relation to “marginal” thinkers, cultures and schools of thought. In proposing this reconsideration of marginality we also hope: 1) to cast new light on marginality as a philosophical theme in its in own right – that is, as a subject worthy of sustained theoretical reflection; 2) to revive interest in some key themes and authors of great merit whose rediscovery or retrieval from oblivion might enrich and enliven debates in fields such as philosophy, comparative literature, political theory, sociology, history, anthropology, and religious studies; and 3) to challenge the “centro-centric” obsessions and parochial self-sufficiency that sometimes creep into the academic literature produced within these fields.

We believe that a critical and interdisciplinary study of marginality (broadly defined) can contribute to the emergence of a new epistemic ecumenism allowing us to understand the multifarious ways in which our knowledge of the world is produced, structured and disseminated. The reconsideration of marginality – of marginal themes, authors and texts, of non-canonical ways of thinking, methodologies and epistemic cultures – can also help us better understand ourselves as members of various scholarly communities. Finally, in the long run, a sustained engagement with marginality can make us intellectually richer, culturally more open, and politically more tolerant.

Here are some of the questions that we invite potential contributors to consider: What is marginality and how should this concept be studied? How, and on what grounds, something comes to be considered “marginal” or “central”? Is marginality (or centrality, for that matter) some “quality” intrinsic to an idea, topic or author? If yes, what is it exactly? If not, is marginality (centrality) a matter of context and circumstance, or something else? How is it that an originally “marginal” idea, theme or author come to acquire mainstream status? Is it simply a matter of “passing the test of time,” of chance, a matter of “the right time and the right place”? Is the fact due to some form “epistemic luck”? Reversely, how exactly do ideas, topics, and authors go “out of fashion” and become marginal? How does one’s “anxiety of marginality” shape one’s thinking? What is the role of marginality in the formation of the epistemic canon? How do the center and the margin communicate with each other? How exactly does the periphery change, challenge and redefine the body of knowledge that is produced by/at the center?

We invite submissions addressing several modes of marginality:

• epistemic marginality (the marginality of an idea, concept, theory, methodology)
• auctorial marginality (marginality of an author in relation to the mainstream)
• cultural marginality (local research cultures, marginal research programs/agendas)
• geographic marginality (peripheral places/cultures and their relationship to the metropolitan centers).

After an initial editorial screening, all articles and reviews submitted to “The European Legacy” will undergo a peer-review evaluation. Manuscripts, typed double-spaced, should be submitted to the Guest Editors as e-mail attachments. The author’s full address should be supplied as a footnote to the title page. Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th edition.

Geographic Information Science (GIScience) as an interdisciplinary field seeks to understand the nature of geographic phenomena and of geographic information. This doctoral college (DK for the German abbreviation used by the Austrian Science fund) advances formalized doctoral education and research training in GIScience at the University of Salzburg by integrating PhD students with focused research clusters. The DK seeks to conceptualize spatial principles and to explore scientific, educational, and policy-related uses of geographic information in order to analyze the complex relationships between individuals and society.

It provides a framework for explicitly spatial scientific studies of physical and social phenomena. Salzburg is an established hotspot for GIScience research and a well-known trademark in research and education, and combines University with non-university research (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Salzburg Research and research studio iSPACE). Your positionThe research section Theoretical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts studies aiming to improve existing and to develop new methods for design and analysis of (clinical) epidemiological studies. The section focuses on the following themes: Developing innovative designs for diagnostic and prognostic (prediction) research, Developing innovative methods for quantifying the true or added value of (new) diagnostic and prognostic tests in a
multivariable clinical context, Developing innovative methods for the validation and updating of so-called clinical prediction rules, Testing and improving sophisticated methods for dealing with missing values in epidemiologic research, Investigating innovative methods for meta-analysis and individual patient data-analysis of etiologic and therapeutic studies, Development of models to combine data from randomised and observational studies including genetic information, for estimating (long term) prognosis according to specific patient characteristics in addition to treatment effects. The research group Medical Technology Assessment conducts studies on the cost-effectiveness of new medical interventions, such as newly developed drugs,
new surgical procedures or new screening strategies. Some of the focus areas of this group are:

The cost-effectiveness analysis of blood safety measure,
Cost-effectiveness of interventions to improve circulatory health,
Development of new methods to support model-based cost-effectiveness analyses,

In both groups, the mentioned methodological themes are not only studied on a purely
theoretical level, but are also illustrated by using empirical data from various medical disciplines. In collaboration these groups will start a new project on the development of methods to assess the actual added value of implementing new diagnostic tests.

The Theoretical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Medical Technology Assessment groups will collaborate within a new project on the development of methods to assess the actual added value of implementing new diagnostic tests. Clinical prediction rules aim to provide a probability of the presence of a disease (diagnosis) or occurrence of a disease (prognosis) in an individual.
The development of such prediction models is becoming increasingly popular, and newly developed diagnostic tests, such as biomarkers, may lead to improved prediction models. However, the evaluation of those prediction models is typically limited to an assessment of their predictive accuracy. As a result, the effects of applying new, or updated, prediction models on actual patient outcomes remain unknown. Within the field of health economics modeling methods have been developed to assess the balance between costs and effects (patient outcomes) for medical interventions. In this project we aim to use and extend these methods for the assessment of the added value of new diagnostic tests. In addition, we aim to develop methods that are able to quantify the effects of replacing an existing prediction model that is used in clinical practice with a new, or updated, prediction model. A new model may provide different risk estimates for patients, for example for cardiovascular disease, compared with the old model. As a result the preferred treatment option may also change for specific patient subgroups, and methods need to be developed to identify these subgroups. We will use statistical methods and simulation models as well as empirical data on the diagnosis deep vein thrombosis, the prognosis of cardiovascular outcomes, and the prognosis of traumatic brain injury. In collaboration with epidemiologists, statisticians and health economists you will investigate methods to assess diagnostic tests in general and clinical prediction rules in particular. Results will be described in scientific papers, and published in international, peer-reviewed journals. Based on the papers you will write a thesis, at the end of the project. For this project a 3-year temporary position is available, starting with a 1-year contract, followed by a 2-year contract when progress is satisfactory. During the project there is an opportunity to do a master of science program in clinical epidemiology.

The clinical informatics group in the Division of Biomedical Statistics and Informatics at Mayo Clinic is offering a 3-6 month Summer/Fall internship for 2011. CfP: Joint UNDP-IMF Prize for Best Study on Kosovo Remittances

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and International Monetary Award (IMF) are pleased to launch the call for paper for the UNDP-IMF Prize for Best Study on Remittances. UNDP Kosovo in partnership with IMF would like to offer researchers and students from different disciplines free access to the unique 2010 Kosovo Remittance survey dataset in order for them to produce a substantive analysis by using the data. This initiative is an opportunity to gain more knowledge about the size, forms, and effects of remittances as well as to stimulate a debate on the role of remittances and innovative strategies for increasing the impact of remittances on Kosovo’s economy.

Aims and Topics

The call for papers will focus on empirical research that makes use of the survey data to produce an analysis of the main characteristics of remittances in Kosovo, and operationally useful suggestions on how to increase the development impact of remittances in Kosovo. The papers should have the following components:

Statistical analysis
Practical applications on how to improve the development impact of remittances
Concrete policy recommendations

Researchers are encouraged to complement the Kosovo Remittance survey data with other existing quantitative and qualitative data, including possible international comparisons.

Data

The survey data has been collected in December 2009 and it is based on a representative sample of 4,000 households. The survey captured information of 1) household employment, income and expenditure, 2) migrants’ as well as households’ outlook for migration, 3) the channels for transmitting remittances, their uses, as well as households’ outlook for remittances flows, and 4) effects of remittances on income, employment, access to healthcare and to education. The dataset consists of

Remittance Survey data in SPSS and excel format, and
Questionnaire in English and in local languages.

Those who wish to use the data for a research paper are required to give credit to "UNDP/ USAID/IMF Kosovo Remittance Survey Dataset 2010".

How to Participate

We invite researchers and students to submit the application form to ulla- maija.rantapuska@ undp.org, after which the access to the data set will be provided.

A full paper should be submitted by 31 May, 2011 to ulla-maija.rantapuska@undp.org.

The paper must be in English and should not exceed 25 standard pages including annexes. The paper should include short abstract, keywords and references.

Evaluation of the Papers

The papers will be evaluated by a professional panel composed of representatives from UNDP, IMF, Central Bank of Kosovo, Government of Kosovo and academia.

The papers will be evaluated will be based on the following criteria:

New innovative use of the data
Critical thinking

Prize and Presentation of the Awards

Announcement of the winner of the best paper will be given by the end of August 2011.

Ile-de-France Master’s Degree Scholarships

As part of its international mobility action, the Ile-de-France region is offering an individual financial aid entitled “Ile-de-France Master’s Scholarship”, aimed at enabling higher education institutions from the region to host foreign students during the 1st or the 2nd year of their Master’s programme. The number of scholarships is fixed according to quotas and specified each year during the regional budget vote.

Eligible candidates
Nationality:
The Ile-de-France Master’s Scholarship is open to students who are nationals of European Union
nations and those of the following 16 nationalities:
- South African, Argentine, Brazilian, Canadian, Chilean, Hungarian, Indian, Lebanese, Malagasy, Malian, Moroccan, Mauritanian, Polish, Russian, Senegalese and Vietnamese. Candidates holding dual citizenship, including French nationality, will not be priority.

As always, the Convention boasts the most international lineup of panelists of North American-based conventions, with more than half of the 400+ scholars delivering papers, currently based outside of the United States in nearly 50 countries. More than 750 panelists and participants are expected at the Convention. The program features 140+ panels, including the screening of several new documentaries that will be announced later.

A number of special panels are featured on the program, including a presentation by Father Patrick Desbois, President of Yahad-in Unum in Paris, on his multi-year project "The Holocaust by Bullets" in Ukraine; a roundtable on the role of blogging in academic social science, and a roundtable on the unity crisis currently experienced by Belgium. In addition, the panel/workshop "How to Get an Article Published," one of the most attended panels at the 2010 Convention, will be making a repeat appearance, with the editors of Nationalities Papers, Ethnopolitics, and Europe-Asia Studies. Several panels are also adorn the three thematic sidebars of "History, Politics, and Memory", "Ethnicity and Violence," and "Debating Self-Determination after Kosovo."

These panels will enrich an exceptionally strong lineup of panels in all regions of the former Communist world and Eurasia: Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia/Turkey/ China, the Balkans, Ukraine and Central Europe (including the Baltics and Moldova). Every year, the Program Committee has to be more selective in devising the lineup, due to the increasing number of proposals. Central Europe leads the way with 25 panels each, followed by the Balkans, with 20, Central Asia/China/Turkey— with a combined 18 panels, Russia—14, Ukraine and Belarus—10, and the Caucasus—9. Thirteen panels appear in the "Thematic" section. Recurrent themes on the program, other than the sidebars, include War Tribunals, Post-Conflict, EU Enlargement, Language, Ethnic Minorities, Foreign Policy and Diasporas.

In its most visible section, the Convention will be hosting twelve special panels featuring new important books by Alfred Stepan, Juan Linz and Yogenda Yadrav (Crafting State-Nations: India and Other Multinational Democracies, Johns Hopkins 2011), TimothySnyder (Bloodlands, Basic 2010), Charles King (Odessa: Genius and Death in a City of Dreams, Norton 2011), Christian Gerlach (Extremely Violent Societies, Cambridge 2010), Fuat Dundar (Crime of Numbers: The Role of Statistics in the Armenian Question, 1878-1918, Transaction 2010), Larry Wolff (The Idea of Galicia, Stanford 2010), Scott Radnitz (Weapons of the Wealthy: Predatory Regimes and Elite-Led Protests in Central Asia, Cornell 2010), Elise Giuliano (Constructing Grievance: Ethnic Nationalism in Russia's Republics, Cornell 2010), Nadav Shelef (Evolving Nationalism: Homeland, Identity, and Religion in Israel, 1925-2005, Cornell 2010), Monika Baár (Historians and Nationalism: East Central Europe in the Nineteenth Century, Oxford 2010), Lara Nettelfield (Courting Democracy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Columbia 2010), and Milica Uvalic (Serbia's Transition: Towards a Better Future, Palgrave 2010).

Two of these book panels are part of the section "Nationalism Studies", which offers a platform for the latest trends in nationalism studies worldwide. Ten more panels appear in the Nationalism section, such as "Historical Legacy in the Making of Boundaries, Loyalty and Political Identity,""Power Sharing: Theory and Practice," and "Multiethnic Socieites".

Since 2005, the ASN Convention has acknowledged excellence in graduate studies research by offering Awards for Best Doctoral Student Papers in five sections: Russia/Ukraine/ Caucasus, Eurasia/Turkey, Central Europe, Balkans, and Nationalism Studies. The winners at the 2010 Convention were Marlene Spoerri (U of Amsterdam, The Netherlands) for the Balkans, Cristian Cercel (Durham U, UK) for Central Europe, Nicole Eaton (UC Berkeley, US) and Michal Simecka (U ofOxford, UK) for Russia/Ukraine/ Caucasus, and Mateusz Laszczkowski (Max Planck Institute, Germany) for Central Eurasia/Turkey. More than a hundred doctoral students will be eligible for the awards at the 2011 Convention.

USA: Duke Law Summer Institutes - Europe, Asia

Duke Law School sponsors two one-month residential summer law institutes, one located in Europe and the other in Asia. The institutes are designed for students and young professionals interested in studying international and comparative law. They also provide an excellent
foundation for studying law in the United States. Courses are taught in English, by faculty from the United States and from other countries. One course taught annually is an introduction to the American legal system. Other courses tend to change from year to year and focus on subjects
such as emerging markets, international trade, intellectual property, international dispute resolution, mergers and acquisitions, human rights, banking, international criminal law, and comparative constitutional law. The institutes each enroll from 50 to 70 students from Duke and other American law schools, as well as from countries around the world.

The Asia-America Institute in Transnational Law is conducted in cooperation with the University of Hong Kong Law Faculty. It focuses on courses and topics of particular interest to lawyers or students engaged in or contemplating transactional work in Asia.

The Duke-Geneva Institute in Transnational Law is co-sponsored by Duke Law School and the University of Geneva Law Faculty in Switzerland. It coordinates courses on public international law with visits to the
international organizations in Geneva, as well as offers courses in private law areas with special emphasis on European and comparative law.

Both institutes are enriched by a series of afternoon seminars delivered by legal and financial experts from Asia or from international institutions in Geneva. The institutes welcome participation from lawyers, judges, government officials, academics, and pre-LLM students.

Duke Law School is also proud to offer the Summer Institute on Law, Language, & Culture. This four-week intensive program takes place at Duke Law School and is designed to introduce international students and visitors coming to Duke to the American law school experience.
