One of the hot topics in computer vision nowadays is to provide users with means for managing and retrieving visual information based on the semantics of visual contents. Semantics are linguistically expressed by humans, and can be represented in a computer by means of knowledge representation techniques. Among them, ontologies
represent the state-of-the- art in the expression of certain semantics of concepts.

In order to interact with digital visual information on the basis of semantics, one
of the most important challenges is to fill the semantic gap between the representation of visual information and the representation of the corresponding
semantics. In computers, images are usually represented by structured collections
of numerical features. On the basis of learning, context, and linguistic
expressions, this information can be turned into semantics, and the latter employed in the interaction with the visual information. The objective of the special session is to provide a forum for the exposition and discussion of the most recent applications and developments in the topic.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to

- Ontologies for visual information
- Semantic and linguistic human-machine interaction with visual information
- Modelling the semantics of linguistic terms for Image and Video features
- Semantic and linguistic description of color, texture, and shape.
- Semantic and linguistic segmentation
- Semantic and linguistic description of spatial relationships
- Pattern recognition and machine learning for characterization of semantics
- Object recognition
- Linguistic image description
- Linguistic description of motion
- Generation of visual information from semantic and/or linguistic descriptions
- Semantic and linguistic information extraction
- Computational Intelligence techniques for dealing with semantics of visual
information
- Applications in medicine, surveillance, and retrieval
