A doctoral grant in Cancer Epidemiology and Neuroepidemology, Karolinska Institutet
Karolinska Institutet has a vacancy forA doctoral student with doctoral grant in Cancer Epidemiology and Neuroepidemology( 2 positions)
Department
Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Description of research group and project
The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics is among the biggest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology for different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total approximately some 250 staff. The department is situated in campus Solna. Further information can be found atwww.meb.ki. se.
We are now looking for a total of two phD-positions divided into two different research areas: Cancer Epidemiology and Neuroepidemiology.
Our breast cancer epidemiology group comprises 2 professors, 4 postdocs, and 4 PhD-students. The group has a vast international collaboration and frequently interacts with European, Singaporean and US groups. The present thesis will aim at acquiring a comprehensive picture of breast cancer prognosis. In Sweden, one woman in eight will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime and approximately one fourth of breast cancer patients will die from their disease, while many more will suffer from treatment related complications. There are both host (patient) and tumor characteristics that define breast cancer prognosis, as well as treatment response and complications. Therefore our aim is to study both patient and tumor determinants of breast cancer prognosis.
Our neuroepidemiology research group studies genetic and environmental risk factors for the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis and Parkinson’s disease; and the research group consists of researchers from both Karolinska Institutet and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in the United States. The present thesis will for the first time systematically investigate the relationship between metabolic disorders and ALS and improve our understating of the potentially shared aetiology of metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. The role of metabolic disorders on cardiovascular diseases has been broadly investigated, while a potential role of metabolic disorders on neurodegenerative diseases including ALS is less well studied.
Duties and responsibilities
Cancer epidemiology:
Under supervision, the PhD student will be responsible for literature review, data analysis, result interpretation, scientific article writing and data presentation. We will study the long term prognosis among women treated for breast cancer using registry data. Next we want to study inheritance of breast cancer prognosis as well as tumor specific markers for disease progression. Finally we will explore a possible association between mammographic density, site of metastasis, and prognosis. Your supervisors have a broad expertise in cancer epidemiology, clinical oncology, biostatistics and molecular techniques.
Neuroepidemiology:
Under supervision, the PhD student will be responsible for literature review, data analysis, result interpretation, scientific article writing and data presentation. We will 1) assess the associations between diabetes/BMI and ALS; 2) examine whether metabolic disorders share a high comorbidity correlation with ALS; and 3) estimate predictive value of medication use profile on ALS risk. The project includes register data, lab and clinical data. Your supervisors have a broad expertise in neuroepidemiology, medicine, and environmental epidemiology. During the PhD training, the student will spend one-year research sojourn in the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
Eligibility/ Qualifications
To be eligible, an applicant must
1. hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree
2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 HECs, of which at least 60 at second-cycle level, or
3. have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent competence in Sweden or abroad.
Those who meet the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e. had completed a programme of higher education for at least 180 HEC or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of July, 2015.
Selection is made of qualified applicants on the ground of their ability to benefit from doctoral (third-cycle) education. Karolinska Institutet applies the following assessment criteria:
- Documented subject knowledge of significance to the research project
- Analytical skills confirmed by a scientific dissertation or the equivalent
- Other documented knowledge/experienc e of potential significance to doctoral (third-cycle) education in the subject
An overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications will be made.
The vacancy will be filled on condition that the successful applicant is admitted to doctoral (third-cycle) education.

USA: Southern Oregon University International Cultural Services Program Up to $9000 in Grants
The Southern Oregon University (SOU) International Cultural Services Program (ICSP) provides approximately 20 international undergraduate and graduate students with grants of about $9000 USD per academic year ($3,000 USD per term) toward tuition at SOU. Partial grants are sometimes awarded. Once accepted to this competitive program, students who perform satisfactorily are normally able to continue with ICSP support until they complete their program at SOU.
A unique factor of this grant is "cultural service". Students participating in the program devote some 3 hours per week (80 hours per academic year) to volunteer service, usually consisting of making presentations about their countries and cultures in local schools.
In order to qualify, please note that:
- The full range of criteria that one would expect will be considered, including academic excellence as demonstrated by grades and other achievement (minimum GPA is 2.75 for undergraduate and 3.0 for graduate students), the student's own written application, an interview when possible, and letters of recommendation. Demonstration of financial need is also taken into consideration.
- For ICSP grants, those selected must also have excellent and clear spoken English and the ability to represent their country effectively in public. For both programs, we also strive to achieve some geographical balance in participation.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting Travel Grants
The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting provides travel grants to cover hard costs associated with upcoming travel for an international reporting project. Our ideal project offers print, photography, radio, and video.
*We are not currently accepting submissions for video-only projects.
A common misperception of the Pulitzer Center is that we are primarily seeking "conflict" reporting. This is not the case. Our definition of "crisis" is broad. We see great value in covering the too often under-reported systemic level crises, from environmental issues and struggles for resources or human rights abuses, to post-conflict reconstruction, or brewing ethnic tensions. We are interested in the stories
that would typically not make the headlines without our support.
*Request for proposals: Sudan in transition http://pulitzercenter.org/open.cfmid=1084
*
*Terms of travel grant:*
The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting funds international travel costs associated with reporting projects on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream American media.
The amount of individual travel grants will depend on the specific project and detailed budget planning. Most awards fall in the range of $2,000 to $10,000 but depending on project specifics may be as much as $20,000.
On approved projects, half of the grant amount is generally paid just before travel and the remainder on submission of the principal material for publication or broadcast. Specific grant terms are negotiated during the application process.
*Distribution: *
Proposed projects must include a credible plan for broad dissemination of the resulting work in U.S. media (print and/or broadcast). Applicants should be able to demonstrate interest from editors and/or producers working in wide-reaching U.S. media outlets. See below for eligible outlets.
http://www.pulitzercenter.org/openmenu.cfm?id=7#outlets
The credibility of a distribution plan is generally most evident in an applicant's track-record working with the listed outlets. Please do not have editors send letters simply stating they would consider the work. Letters from editors and/or producers who have worked with you in the past, and are interested in working with you again, are encouraged.
*Cross-Platform: *
The Pulitzer Center is increasingly seeking multi-media projects that combine print/photography and video to explore the issues. We encourage applicants to create partnerships with others and propose a complimentary suite of deliverables. If you are only working in one medium, you may still apply.
*Eligibility: *
Grants are open to all journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers; staff journalists as well as free-lancers of any nationality are eligible to apply.
*How to apply:*
Applications should be submitted by email to info@pulitzercenter .org.
*Even if you are submitting sample materials via hard copies, *electronic versions of the proposal MUST also be e-mailed to this address or else they will not be considered.*
Applications must be received in English.
Applications should include the following in the body of the e-mail:
- A description of the proposed project, including distribution plan, in 250 words or less to be included in the body of the e-mail.
- A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs. Travel grants cover hard costs associated with the reporting, please do not include stipends for the applicants. Fixer/translator/ driver fees are acceptable;
- Three links to samples of work if available online (if not available, please attach to the e-mail; video samples can be sent by mail to below address in DVD format);
- Three professional references. These can be either contact information, or letters of recommendation (can be attached or sent separately). The latter is encouraged when letters from interested producers or editors are available.
- As attachment: Curriculum vitae;
(Note: Applications may also include a more detailed description of project but this will be considered as optional supplement only. The most important part of the submission is the 250-word summary.)
*Deadline:* Rolling
Within a week of your submission, you should receive a confirmation of receipt.
Typically applications that are received in a given month receive a response by the end of the following month, with an emphasis on making Pulitzer Center projects as timely and newsworthy as possible.
If your proposal requires immediate attention, please note why in your cover letter.
*Address for mailing hard copies and DVDs:*
*Remember to also send the electronic versions toinfo@pulitzercent er.org.
Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting
1779 Massachusetts Ave., NW
Suite 615
Washington, DC
20036
*Frequently Asked Questions:*
1) What outlets do you consider "wide-reaching"
The Center is seeking to reach the widest possible audience in the United States, therefore we typically look for platforms with circulation and/or broadcast numbers of at least 50,000 or more. Online-only outlets will also be considered, but we prefer to see this combined with a traditional print publication and/or on-air broadcast.
2) Are foreign language publications in the U.S. sufficient?
Yes, however they must meet the above criteria within the U.S., and materials for our site and all correspondence with the Center must still be in English; therefore fluency in English is required from at least one member of the team.
3) Are English language publications/ broadcasts that are not disseminated in the U.S. sufficient for the distribution plan?
No. Once approved, we encourage dissemination in as many outlets as possible, including abroad, but to be considered for the travel grant, the Center will need to see a plan for dissemination in the U.S. as well.
