Call for partners for approved training “Sustainable development as lifestyle" in Iasi, Romania, on 13th – 22nd of September 2009

Dear friends,

EuroDEMOS Association will develop the European Training "Sustainable development as lifestyle" in Iasi, Romania, on 13th – 22nd of September 2009. This project has been funded with support from the European Commission through Youth in Action Programme.

As you know sustainable development is one of the greatest challenge of the XXI century.

According to World Commission on Environment and Development, each year the number of human beings increases, but the amount of natural resources with which to sustain this increase of population, to improve the quality of human lives and to eliminate mass poverty remains finite.

In terms of the persistent trends of growing population numbers, there
will be an enormous challenge in meeting the needs of almost twice as
many people as there are today in the space of a few decades.

EuroDEMOS Association is looking for partners for the Training
"Sustainable development as lifestyle". The training approaches
the theme of sustainable development and will be focus especially on
Waste Selective Collection.

EuroDEMOS is a Civic Attitudes Association, specialized in the last 19
years of voluntary activity in forming opinion leaders by developing
civic programmes at mass level and on target groups, of defending human
rights, democratic values, European and sustainable development
principles.

The Training "Sustainable development as lifestyle" approaches
the theme using non-formal methods and will treat the subjects:

- An overview on Sustainable Development;

- The Waste problems at European and local level;

- What means Waste Selective Collection?

- How to manage a successful awareness campaign on Sustainable
Development, especially on Waste Selective Collection;

- The role of NGOs (Civil Society) in promoting the importance of
sustainable development;

- The importance of celebrating European Mobility Week and other
European environmental days;

- Personal development and lifestyle in sustainable development.

The training will include an intercultural evening, work-shops, debate,
a TV-show simulation, QUIZ and, of course, visit to the important
ecological monuments and culture monuments of the city and around the
city and to local waste disposal.

TRAVEL, BOARD AND LODGING

Travel:
The travel cost will be repaid up to 70% of the travel costs. Only the
participants who attend the entire training course can be reimbursed.

Accommodation:
Board and lodging will be provided and paid by EuroDEMOS.

If you are interested please send us signed and stamped IIIrd Part (if
you don't have it send us an email to receive it), by fax or by mail
scanned, until 31st of August 2009.

Fax no. 0040 332 803634

E-mail: eurodemos_youth@ yahoo.com

PhD Scholarship in Interdisciplinary Areas at NUS

The Asia Research Institute is pleased to offer Ph.D. research scholarships from August 2010 in the following interdisciplinary areas:
- THE CHANGING FAMILY IN ASIA

- ASIAN MIGRATION

- RELIGION & GLOBALISATION IN ASIAN CONTEXTS

- CULTURAL STUDIES IN ASIA

- COLD WAR IN ASIA

- SUMATRA HERITAGE, ARCHAEOLOGY AND RECONSTRUCTION

The PhD scholarship is to be taken up jointly with the appropriate discipline-based department. This would normally be with a department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, but where appropriate could also be with the Faculty of Law, School of Business or School of Design & Environment at the National University of Singapore. Please note that some departments / Programmes only have one intake per year in August (Semester 1).

Interested applicants are required to submit their application by 15th November 2009, indicating clearly both which ARI interdisciplinary area they wish to join and which department they would be attached to. Application procedures and forms can be obtained from the NUS website via this URL: http://www.nus. edu.sg/registrar /edu/gd-applnres .html

Applicants must use the application forms in the respective Faculty websites depending on the Faculty to which they wish to seek admission. They should send their applications directly to their respective faculties, indicating their interest to be attached to ARI. Applicants should not send a duplicate copy to ARI.

The following interdisciplinary areas or "clusters" are offering scholarships:

1) The Changing Family in Asia (Research Leader: Prof Gavin Jones)
This cluster explores the dimensions of family change in the region, their causes and their implications. These dimensions include rising ages at marriage, declining size of the nuclear family, increase in one-person households and alternative family forms, changing gender roles within families, and changes in family structures. They are studied in the context of the changing political-economic structures and changing state/family roles in provision of services and support.

2) The Migration Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

3) The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia. The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or `glocal´ forms of identity.

4) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

5) The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia, relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.

6) The Asian Cities Cluster (Research Leaders: Prof Heng Chye Kiang & Prof Chua Beng Huat) is housed in School of Design and Environment (SDE), Department of Architecture (NUS). This cluster focuses especially on cutting-edges areas of rapid change and the identity of Asia cities, notably including: the impact of rapid urbanization, adapting and conserving heritage to a changing urban environment, and urban environmental planning. It will build collaborative and interdisciplinary connections among the colleagues from the Humanities and Social Science faculties in NUS.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. Now home to six research clusters with a strong team of resident and visiting scholars, ARI works closely with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Law, and School of Design and Environment in NUS.

CfP: Practices of International Governance, Antwerp, 27-28.11.2009

Practices of International Governance

27-28 November, 2009

Background
To the extent that societies are subject to processes of globalization,
problems increasingly have to be dealt with “beyond the nation-state.” There is a growing need for international governance. This is not a new, and even less so a contested claim. Unsurprisingly, then, political salience gives rise to scholarly attention. How is it possible to understand the presence/absence, nature, and evolution of international governance? Scholarly accounts of international governance typically rely on diverging social theories. Rationalist social theory informs the dispute over relative versus absolute gains, whereas constructivist approaches address the importance of norm development and changing identities in the relationship between the nation-state and the plurality of actors the contemporary international game. From yet another perspective, discursive approaches can point to shifting loci and bases of authority in these governance structures. Their focus is on the conditions of international action.

In recent times, a range of academics has started to question the singular focus on
discourse, and is instead suggesting a focus on “practices” (see e.g. Neumann 2002, 2007, 2009, Büger and Gadinger 2005, Müller 2008, Pouliot 2008). A major concern in this practice turn is how practices relate to discourse and its institutionalisatio n, and how they relate to social and cultural change. This workshop on the “practices of international governance” will both focus broadly on the practice turn in social theory, and its relevance for the discipline of political science, and explore its relevance for the study of changes in international governance specifically. Special attention will be paid to its methodological implications.

This two-day workshop will be convened by one of the key participants in the ‘practices of governance’ debate, prof. Iver Neumann ( Oslo University). Besides roundtable discussions on “the practice turn” in social theory and international relations, participants will present their research in panel sessions.

We are soliciting three types of papers: analyses that
» contribute to the theorisation of the practice turn in international governance; and/or
» develop methodologies to apply these (meta)theoretical insights to
» empirical studies of practices of international governance

Both junior and senior researches are invited to send a paper proposal. Contributions can take the form of a regular conference paper or of a research design. It is our intention to publish a selection of the papers either as a special issue or as an edited volume.

Deadline paper proposals (abstracts): 15 September 2009

Location: The workshop will be hosted by the University of Antwerp, Belgium

Fees: None. We have applied for funding to finance accommodation, lunches and dinner for participants. The organization of the workshop is conditional upon obtaining this funding (which excludes participants’ traveling costs).

Paper abstracts and information requests can be sent to
Jorg Kustermans (Jorg.Kustermans@ ua.ac.be)

CfP: Ethics Committees and Other Ethical Tools, Bucharest, 30-31.10.2009

BUCHAREST CONFERENCE IN APPLIED ETHICS '09
"Ethics Committees and Other Ethical Tools"
Faculty of Philosophy, University of Bucharest
October 30-31, 2009

www.bcae.ro

We are delighted to invite you at the 2nd edition of the BUCHAREST CONFERENCE IN APPLIED ETHICS, 2009. The event will be hosted by the Faculty of Bucharest, University of Bucharest, during October 30-31, 2009.

The BCAE has been developed as a debate platform, where theorists and practicians meet together and discuss the most important topics in the fields of Applied Ethics. The main aim of these conferences is the advancement of significant solutions for the real world.

This year topic, "Ethics Committees and Other Ethical Tools", reflects the growing interest in institutionalizing ethics. And though there has been some discussions on the role of ethics committees or on the function of some other ethical tools (especially, ethics training and social audit) -- mainly in the form of academic papers --, we consider that the debate is insufficient and too localized. In practice, the theoretical developments are rarely taken into consideration (e.g., in Southern and Eastern Europe, ethics committees function as 'intuitive' bodies, where decision is influenced more by its members' biases, while the Northern European pattern depends heavily on procedures).

Our aim is to bring into light those aspects that can make the ethics tools really work. The ethics committees and the codes of ethics are not individual tools; so we hope to see them working together in integrated ethics (and compliance) frameworks or management systems.

The conference organizers are looking for papers that consider either the integrative model or individual tools. The later approach may discuss topics such as:
the ethics committees and their role in developing effective policies;
codes of ethics: typology, role, structure;
ethics (and compliance) trainings;
ethics audit, social audit, CSR reporting;
ethics (and compliance) policies;
awareness programs;
other ethical tools.

Early submissions are highly encouraged. This way, the prospective participants may receive the acceptance letters faster.

Prospective participants must send final papers to the conference organizers by September 10, 2009. All papers will circulate before conference and will be temporarily published on the official website. After the conference, the papers will be published in the BCAE Proceedings.

Official language is English, but there will be a Romanian speaking panel.

All papers must observe the editorial guidelines and must be prepared for blind-review (one Word file containing the title, author's name, and an English 200-words abstract + a separate Word file containing the title, the abstract and the paper).

There is no participation fee.

For further inquiries, all correspondence should be sent to:
bcae /AT/ bcae / DOT/ ro
