Im Department Analytik sind zum 1. Februar 2008 zwei Stellen für

Doktoranden (w/m)

keine befriedigenden Ergebnisse liefern.

● sehr gute Englischkenntnisse

CfPart: Conference - Towards a "Post Carbon Society", Brussels, 24 O

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to inform you that we are organising a Conference entitled "Towards a post-carbon society - European research on economic incentives and social behaviour" which will take place on 24 October 2007 at the European Commission, Rue de la Loi 170, Charlemagne building.

The objective of the conference is to highlight how the political, social and economic dynamics can make a huge difference over the long-term in facing the two major challenges of adaptation to climate change and to more expensive energy resources.

The focus of the conference is on the "demand side" of the energy and climate change debate. It enriches from the social sciences and humanities perspective the scientific and technology initiatives aiming to achieve the European Union greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency and renewables targets.

This conference should also help to identify concrete research opportunities on the topic "Socio-economic factors and actors that shape the post-carbon society" of the seventh RTD Framework Programme (Call for Proposals FP7-SSH-2007- 1 – Deadline on 29/11/2007).

There are no fees for this Conference but registration is necessary before the 8 October 2007 at the following web site address:

New book: research by Save the Children reveals children's insights

Save the Children has carried out an extensive, field-based research in 7 countries/entities in Southeast Europe, speaking to more than 600 children in individual interviews and focus-group discussions on how they perceive the risks of trafficking and exploitation, what are their own strengths and coping mechanisms and how states and civil society can better provide protection and assistance to children most at risk. The findings from this research have been presented in a regional report "Children spoke out" which was launched on September 18th 2007 at an event hosted by Ms. Edit Bauer, MEP, at the European Parliament in Brussels.
The main objective of Save the Children's research has been to learn more about what causes some children to be more at risk of being trafficked than others, and how efforts and interventions to prevent child trafficking can be designed to better assist and protect these children. The report "Children Speak Out" also aims to inform national and regional policy makers, NGOs and civil society at large on what changes are required to meet the needs of children at risk of exploitation and trafficking. It documents the importance of listening to children and taking their views into account.

The children in this study have been randomly selected from groups of children considered to be at high risk of trafficking and exploitation, including children living and working on the streets, children in institutional care and children from ethnic minorities. The research documents children's remarkable resources in coping with extremely adverse conditions and provides invaluable insights into their daily lives and relationships with family, friends and community. It also tells us why so many of these most vulnerable children have lost trust and confidence in people who should support and protect them as well as the institutions designed to assist them.

The present publication summarises the findings from the participating countries/entities in one regional report. The brand new regional report "Children spoke out" can be downloaded from the Save the Children Alliance website (the link: http://www.savethec hildren.net/ alliance/ what_we_do/ newsdesk/ 2007-09-18. html ) [Adobe PDF, 1759 Kb] or obtained by e-mail from: savealbania@ savealbania. org

The research results were also published (May - June 2007) in national reports in countries/entities that participated in the research, i.e. Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and the UN-administered province of Kosovo and can be received in electronic form as well from the SC office (they are all burned on the CD which follows the regional report in hard copy). Facts and findings from this research will inform Save the Children's on-going advocacy and programmes on child trafficking in Europe and help identify children most at risk, monitor impact of programme interventions and formulate more focused and better targeted advocacy messages.

PUBLICATION: Political Science, Media Studies Books from UMS

PRIMITIVE AMERICA: The Ideology of Capitalist Democracy
Paul Smith
University of Minnesota Press | 176 pages | 2007
ISBN 978-0-8166-2826- 1 | hardcover | $54.00
ISBN 978-0-8166-2827- 8 | paperback | $17.95

An urgent examination of the deep cultural roots of America's response to 9/11.

For cultural critic Paul Smith, the tension between progressive and primitive is a constitutive condition of American history and culture. In Primitive America, Smith contemplates this primary contradiction as it has played out in the years since 9/11. An urgent and important engagement with current American policies and practices, Primitive America is, at the same time, an incisive critique of the ideology that fuels the ethos of America's capitalist culture.

"Primitive (as in accumulation) America (as in underlying political-economic contradictions that have always structured the republic): a land of fundamentalisms only accelerated by 9/11. Paul Smith is the ideal reader of this conjuncture—mordant, biting, refreshingly savage." —Eric Lott

INVESTED INTERESTS: Capital, Culture, and the World Bank

ISBN 978-0-8166-4872- 6 | hardcover | $67.50
ISBN 978-0-8166-4873- 3 | paperback | $22.50

Exposes the global cultural impact of the World Bank.

In Invested Interests, Bret Benjamin contends that the World Bank has, from its inception, trafficked in culture. From the political context in which the Bank was chartered to its evolution into an interventionist development agency with vast, unchecked powers, Benjamin explores the Bank's central role in the global dissemination of Fordist-Keynesianis m, its conflicted support for nationalism and
the nation-state, and its emerging awareness of the relationships between economics and culture

"Bret Benjamin shows us how important it is to break down the traditional academic barriers between economics and culture. By taking economics and economic institutions seriously he opens up new, exciting avenues for literary and cultural studies." —Michael Hardt

ISBN 978-0-8166-4963- 1 | paperback | $25.00

A firsthand view of local currencies that are providing alternatives to global capital.

Money and Liberation examines the experiences of groups who have tried to build a more equitable world by inventing new forms of money. Presenting profiles of the trading networks that have been constructed, including Local Exchange Trading Schemes (England), and Green Dollars (New Zealand), Peter North shows how the use of currency has been redefined as part of political action.

"An invaluable, fair-minded guide to alternative currency movements by an acknowledged expert in the field. Forward to different and more expansive notions of what constitutes the economy and the economic!"

AMERICA TOWN: Building the Outposts of Empire
Mark L. Gillem
University of Minnesota Press | 392 pages | 2007
ISBN 978-0-8166-4952- 5 | hardcover | $75.00
ISBN 978-0-8166-4953- 2 | paperback | $24.95

How the United States has exported the suburban way of life through the design of its military bases.

Mark L. Gillem reveals modern military outposts as key symbols of not just American power but also consumer consumption. Through case studies of several U.S. military facilities Gillem exposes these military installations as suburban culture replicated in the form of vast green lawns, three-car garages, and big-box stores and questions the impact of this practice on the rest of the world.

"America Town illuminates an overlooked effect of U.S. arrogance. Through his perspective as a former service-member and an architect, his accessible writing, and pictorial evidence of spatial disparities, Gillem offers a disturbing depiction of how policies devised in Washington harm the lives of innocent people the world over." —In These Times

"When an architect and land use specialist takes a look at the huge American military bases abroad, the results are spectacular. From the small-town American housing to the bars and brothels next door to the main gates, Mark Gillem gives us new insights into the ecological dimensions of American imperialism. This is a truly original and important analysis." —Chalmers Johnson, author of Blowback, The
Sorrows of Empire, and Nemesis

STUPENDOUS, MISERABLE CITY: Pasolini's Rome
John David Rhodes
University of Minnesota Press | 240 pages | 2007
ISBN 978-0-8166-4929- 7 | hardcover | $60.00
ISBN 978-0-8166-4930- 3 | paperback | $20.00

An Italian film radical shown in rich context for the first time.

John David Rhodes places the city of Rome at the center of this in-depth examination of the work of Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini—but it's not the classical Rome you imagine. Discussing films such as Accattone, Mamma Roma, and The Hawks and the Sparrows, Rhodes shows how Pasolini used the public housing on the periphery of the
city to draw attention to the contemptuous treatment of Rome's poor.

"In this remarkable book, John David Rhodes makes an invaluable contribution to scholarship on cinema and the city. Analyzing Pier Paolo Pasolini's Rome films and his political and emotional engagement with the city, Rhodes has provided a fascinating and moving background to this period of Pasolini's life, vision, and politics." —Laura Mulvey

SHIMMERING SCREENS: Making Media in an Aboriginal Community
Jennifer Deger
University of Minnesota Press | 256 pages | 2006
ISBN 978-0-8166-4921- 1 | hardcover | $67.50
ISBN 978-0-8166-4922- 8 | paperback | $22.50
Visible Evidence Series, volume 19

Reconsiders the interplay between aboriginal communities and media.

A rich ethnographic study, Shimmering Screens examines the productive, and sometimes problematic, conjunctions of technology, culture, and imagination in contemporary Yolngu life. Jennifer Deger offers a new perspective to ongoing debates regarding "media imperialism. " Reconsidering assumptions about the links between representation, power, and "the gaze," she proposes the possibility of a more mutual
relationship between subject, image, and viewer.

"Organized as a spiral-shaped flow, Jennifer Deger's ethnography explores the way in which the small community of Gapuwiyak engages with photography, video and audio recordings in the context of the Broadcasting in Remote Aboriginal Communities Scheme (BRACS) program. It also describes, with profound sentiment and methodological
sophistication, the dialogue, and frequent misunderstandings, of Western Yolngu knowledge systems, epitomized by Deger and Bangana Wunungmurra' s collaboration and friendship. A remarkable aspect of Shimmering Screens is the way in which Deger not only discusses but meditates Yolngu mimesis. This is achieved by means of a narrative
that weaves theory and fieldwork descriptions, personal insights and ethnographic observations. If at times this shimmering effect is dazzling, it nevertheless facilitates the understanding of Yolngu ontological and phenomenological systems." —Media International Australia

F Is for Phony: Fake Documentary and Truth's Undoing
Alexandra Juhasz and Jesse Lerner, editors
University of Minnesota Press | 244 pages | 2006
ISBN 978-0-8166-4250- 2 | hardcover | $60.00
ISBN 978-0-8166-4251- 9 | paperback | $20.00
Visible Evidence Series, volume 17

The first sustained critique of the mockumentary.

The essays in F Is for Phony discuss a broad scope of works and explore issues raised by "fake docs" such as the fiction/documentary divide, the ethics of reality-based manipulation, and whether documentariness derives from form or reception. Defining the borderline between fact and fiction, the contributors reveal what fake
documentaries imply and usually make explicit: that many documentaries lie to tell the truth, and that the truth is relative.

RETHINKING GLOBAL SISTERHOOD: Western Feminism and Iran
Nima Naghibi
University of Minnesota Press | 232 pages | 2007
ISBN 978-0-8166-4759- 0 | hardcover | $67.50
ISBN 978-0-8166-4760- 6 | paperback | $22.50

The first analysis of how Western and Iranian feminism both converge and conflict.

Nima Naghibi makes powerful connections among feminism, imperialism, and the discourses of global sisterhood. Naghibi investigates topics including the state-sponsored Women's Organization of Iran and the involvement of feminists such as Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem in the Iranian feminism movement. She also examines the veiled woman in the films of Tahmineh Milani, Ziba Mir-Hosseini and Kim Longinotto, and Mahnaz Afzali.

"Rethinking Global Sisterhood is a book that not only tears apart stereotypes and assumptions about the significance of Muslim women's dress, but levels harsh critique against those feminist who invoke `global sisterhood' as their cause while perpetuating colonial attitudes of superiority toward their veiled `sisters'." —In These Times

From traditional attire to the modern dress: modes of identification, modes of recognition in the Balkans (XVI-XX Centuries)

Convener: Constanþa Vintilã-Ghitulescu, historian, researcher at the Nicolae Iorga Institute of History, Bucharest, NEC and GE-NEC alumna

According to a Romanian saying, “dress doesn’t make a person”. True as it may be, the moral implications of this saying are of less concern to us here than its possible social significance, which would rather suggest its reading in the affirmative. In the past, dress was an important social indicator. It told a lot about the social condition, the status of a person, her wealth. But dress can also provide information on the evolution of a society, on the dynamic interrelation between fashion and social behavior. Dress can thus become the prime matter for the analysis of a society through the joint efforts of historians, anthropologists, ethnologists, and sociologists.

The Balkans, a cultural, ethnic and social mosaic, provides an ideal setting for such a research. One can find here similarities at a regional level, and wide differences coexisting in proximity, in the same geographic region. An oriental mode of dressing, induced by Ottoman occupation or domination, was taken over by the elites of a community as a token of loyalty towards the regime; side by side with it, one could find a diversity of “folk” costumes, the garb of the “common people”. As the Ottoman Empire declined, dress became one of the major means of asserting the emancipation of the former subjects and the modernization of the Balkan societies, of expressing the mental changes taking place within them. In a Europe of nations, the “folk” costumes became bearers of political and ideological meaning, emblems of the newly established nations. Their instrumentalisation didn’t end with the 19th century, however. In some cases, they were rediscovered by the Communist
regimes and put to use in the construction of a novel identity.

The symposium proposes to gather researchers from various fields, and from a number of academic and research centers in South-Eastern Europe and in other parts of the world, inviting them to focus their reflections on dress and its role in social, political, and ideological change, on the lines suggested below:

A. The significance of dress in the establishment and acceptance of a political regime
1. the “oriental dress” and the modes of representation of a social elite
2. “from oriental attire to the tail coat”: dress as an indicator of modernization
3. dress and its manipulation in the process of social/political emancipation

B. Diversity in dress / Diversity of social categories
1. dress, color schemes, norms as indicators of social hierarchy
2. the dress of the “parvenu” as a symbol of social promotion
3. egalitarian modes of dressing and the leveling of “social visibility”

C. Dress and identity construction 1. Romanticism and the rediscovery of the “national” costume
2. identity construction – dress construction
3. the folk costume between tradition, modernity, and contemporary handicraft
4. fashion: lost or reconfigured meanings in a unified Europe

The preservation of local identities in an enlarged European Community has become a growing concern. Can dress still define social categories and peoples? Or do certain types of traditional dress become mere museum objects? Do they find refuge in a handicraft that reinvents and refashions an idealized, barely known, largely imaginary past? The symposium will attempt to investigate the ways in which dress entered the political, social and cultural play; the major role attributed to dress by social actors in a more or less distant past, and within its various constructions; its instrumentalisation in modern times, in search of identity. The Balkans, where an earlier common history developed into a variety of distinct trajectories, are a particularly propitious field for such a research, which may shed some light on certain peculiarities of “Balkanism”.

Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) at Columbia University

Dear friends and colleagues:

I am delighted to announce that the application for the 2008 session of the annual Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) at Columbia University is now available. I would like to take this opportunity to ask you to disseminate this information and application to human rights activists based in the Global South as well as grassroots activists in the United States.

HRAP is designed to prepare proven human rights leaders from the Global South and marginalized communities in the U.S. to participate in national and international policy debates on globalization by building their skills, knowledge, and contacts. The Program features a four-month residency at Columbia University in New York City with a structured curriculum of advocacy, networking, skills-building, and academic
coursework.

Since 2004, HRAP has concentrated its support on individuals and organizations that address issues broadly related to globalization.

The four-month intensive capacity building program based at Columbia University in New York focuses on the following key issue areas:

* Environmental injustice
* Labor rights violations
* Abuses by multinational corporations
* Ramifications of resource extraction
* Public health crises
* Unsustainable development
* Intolerance, xenophobia, and social exclusion related to globalization

Special attention is given to the above issues and their intersection with gender, race, ethnicity, sexual identity, and/or other sources of marginalization.

HRAP's current focus has emerged in recent years as a response to the negative effects of globalization on those with the least access to decision-making processes. Given their physical and symbolic distance from centers of power, grassroots leaders are typically unable to lobby for equitable outcomes from global policymakers.

The design of HRAP is intended to help level the playing field for those lacking the access and relevant skills or knowledge to lobby effectively for their causes. The Program provides advanced training, support, and networking opportunities to respected human rights leaders. The focus is both on strengthening the skills of the individual Advocates and providing tools to build sustainable organizations that advocate for disadvantaged peoples.

Participants are selected on the basis of their previous work experience on human rights and globalization, commitment to the human rights field, and demonstrated ability to complete graduate-level studies. Advocates must originate from and reside in either the Global South or the United States. Fluency in English is required. Advocates must secure institutional endorsement from their organizations for their
participation in the Program and must commit to returning to that organization upon completion of the Program.

This extremely competitive Program will admit approximately ten participants. We make every effort to provide full fellowships to cover program costs as well as travel and living expenses for selected Advocates each year. Our staff will work with interested candidates who have been waitlisted for the Program to identify potential funding sources in cases where we do not yet have the resources to provide a full fellowship.

Attached please find an overview of the Program and the 2008 application form. The 2008 HRAP will take place from the middle of August to the middle of December 2008. The completed application is due by October 9, 2007. Those who make it to the second round of the application process will be asked to submit additional materials including essays and letters of reference. Please note that late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

For further information or to download additional copies of the application, please refer to our website at http://humanrights. columbia. edu/hrap/ .

Additional information can be requested by email from hradvocates@ columbia. edu, by phone at +1 (212) 854 7372, or by fax at +1 (212) 316 4578.

Yours sincerely,

CfP: Nation as a problem or a solution & Historical revisionism in Serbia

Novi Sad, Serbia
23.-24.11.2007

Nation as a problem or solution

In Serbia in last 18 years have been series of political and social excesses, which were based on nationality and mutual non-tolerance, which had significantly defined present living environment, especially for young people. Atmosphere of tolerance of cultural, national and religion diversities, typical for Vojvodina, was drastically changed, which directly contributes to the growing number of ethnic, political and religion incidents. All this changes had big influence on young population in Serbia concerning uncritical adoption of nationalistic tendencies and patterns of violent behavior. Today in Serbia, young generations are increasibly liable to adopting different kind of retrograde ideologies, being raised in the times of wars, hatred and poverty, where prejudices have become a common habit.

Project Nation as problem or solution was started with purpose to find answers on questions about role of national problem and nationalism in the life of contemporary Europe and especially post-Yugoslav area, their perspectives and a perspective of young generations, which was raised in environment marked by domination of prejudices, national exclusivity and intolerance.

Project examines in different ways questions of nation, nationalism, its definitions and historical development, its role in contemporary Serbian society and perspectives concerning modern globalization processes, and also its perception from the perspectives of young people today and how it influences on the formation of their opinions, behavior and actions.

Research will be carried out through series of public debates, individual and group researches and cooperation with high-school pupils and students who will be participants of questionnaire, and who’s answers will be used as key examples for initiation of debates.

Historical revisionism in Serbia

We are presently witnessing drastic changes in public discourse on the field of different historical and real-political topics, which is mostly result of identity crisis in contemporary Serbia. Problem of revalidation and new interpretation of close and distance Past is becoming one of the most important problems. It is well known fact that needs of political elites are representing the biggest role in phenomena of revalidation of history, because they are serving like philter for division of “useful” from “useless” history. This is very important because of other well known fact, that who controls the Present is controlling the Past and so can create the Future. Parallel existence of at least two different versions of the same historical events, rehabilitation of chetnik’s movement and followers of Dimitrije Ljotic and Milan Nedic, revision of historical schoolbooks are only some parts of this phenomena, and because of that detail research in the way of scientific objectivity is really important and needed.

Project Historical revisionism in Serbia is searching for answers on questions of role of revisionist tendencies in modern Serbian society, its influence on general development of Serbia, its ideological meaning and influence of new and different interpretation, mostly populist and falsely, on making of “new Serbian man” i.e. mostly influence on young generations.

Project is having multidisciplinary approach to research of historical revisionism phenomena, its definitions, earlier cases in other countries, its manifestations, concrete examples and its role in contemporary Serbian society, and its influences on young generations and their opinions.

Research projects are involving experts in different topics, also as young non-affirmed researchers, multidisciplinary approach on two general topics, series of public discussions, seminar, publication of research results and series of promotions in different cities in Vojvodina and Serbia.
