British Chevening Scolarships

These scholarships, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, are prestigious awards which enable overseas students to study in the United Kingdom.

Scholarships are offered in over 150 countries and enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with the UK and gain skills which will benefit their countries.

The Chevening programme currently provides around 2,300 new scholarships each year for postgraduate studies or research at UK Institutions of Higher Education.

Application Procedure

The Chevening Scholarship Programme is a truly global programme and operates in over 150 countries around the world. As the programme is so diverse and far-reaching there isn't a single timetable for applications and so it is important that you check with the local office when the deadline for applications in your country is.

Although the timetable for deadlines may change from country to country the application process remains the same.

Each country will advertise when they are inviting applications for Chevening scholarships and will state their deadline for applications. Applications will not be dealt with after the date that they give.

Stage 1: Applications are checked to ensure that the applicant meets the standard Chevening criteria (see below) plus any other specified local criteria (see country pages and local advertisement). Because of the volume of applications and high level of competition it is not always possible to reply to each and every application.

Stage 2: If your application meets all of the criteria for the scholarship then you will be short-listed and the local office will write to you and ask you to attend an interview.

Stage 3: You will be interviewed by a panel of interviewers – normally consisting of a member of the British Embassy or High Commission and a member of the British Council.

Stage 4: As the competition for scholarships is intense and funds limited, it is not possible to recommend for all successful candidates the length of award and level of study requested on their application.

Any award of a Scholarship to you is conditional on the following:

- confirmation from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London that your nomination is acceptable;

- there being sufficient funds available;

- the British Council being able to place you on a suitable course;

- the British Council being satisfied with the results of a medical examination which you will be asked to undertake prior to departure.

If and when these formalities have been satisfactorily completed (which may take several months) you will receive a formal written offer of a Scholarship. You should not make any irreversible preparations to leave for Britain unless and until you receive this offer letter.

Your application will be administered by the British Council on behalf of the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Selecting your course
In some countries, you need to select your own course of study. http://www.educationuk.org is a really useful website which will help you identify a suitable course of study for yourself.

What are the financial arrangements?
There are three types of scholarship:

Type A scholarships – these cover tuition fees only.

Type B scholarships – these are full scholarships that cover tuition fees, monthly stipend and various one-off allowances.

Type C scholarships – these vary from award to award and cover part/full stipend and/or allowances.

What are the selection criteria for application?
Competition for Chevening scholarships is intense, and only one in every 25 applicants is successful. A typical successful applicant would be:

A graduate with proven academic skills.

Committed to return to their country and contribute to the socio-economic development of their country through *implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.

Established in a career, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field. The vast majority of Chevening scholars are aged 25 - 35 years old.

Be able to show at interview that they possess the personal qualities to benefit from their scholarship and use it to succeed in their chosen career.

Have a clear idea how their scholarship will benefit their country on their return.

Have good English Language skills, as most UK Higher Education Institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission onto Postgraduate courses.

The application procedure is open and transparent. Please refer to the country page of the country you will be applying to for further details regarding specific criteria and eligibility, which vary from country to county.

What types of courses can I study on a Chevening scholarship?
Chevening scholars must study in the UK for at least 3-months. Most scholars already have a first degree and the majority study for postgraduate degrees particularly Masters courses. However some scholars cannot spare that much time away from their careers and we welcome applications for shorter vocational courses as long as they are adequately challenging and relevant.

We seldom fund undergraduate courses and normally only consider PhD's and MPhil's when we have a co-funding partner.

Chevening scholarships can be used to study most subjects, however in different countries they may target a narrower range of subjects that are especially relevant to that country. Please refer to the country page of the country you will be applying to for further definitive advice on priority subjects.

CfP: OME - Environmental Effects (Cranfield University, UK)

What is the Symposium About?
The Department of Environmental and Ordnance Systems of Cranfield University at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom is hosting the fourth Symposium on Ordnance Munitions and Explosives (OME) between 6th - 7th September 2006 at the Defence Academy Shrivenham. The symposium, again being held in conjunction with the MOD's Defence Ordnance Safety Group (DOSG), will this year focus on the environmental effects of OME.

Why You Should Attend?
Environmental concerns are now high on the world's agenda. Global concern over environmental issues has increased substantially in recent years. The Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1994 and in Johannesburg in 2004 underlined the importance of sustainable development and its relationship with environmental protection. In the UK the Government has launched its sustainable development strategy which places environmental protection high on the UK's agenda. The MOD is responding through its own Sustainable Development programme which sets challenging environmental targets.

During their development, production, use and disposal, OME can have detrimental effects on the natural environment. This symposia will outline some of these effects and how the MOD and wider defence sector is addressing the challenge of environmental management. The symposium will cover aspects of Defence environmental policy, legislation and management and will describe the methodology used by MOD in managing environmental issues during acquisition. Case studies will illustrate some of the issues surrounding environmental management of OME at all stages of their life cycle. Finally the symposium will set out the forward plan for the environmental management of OME and discuss some of the technological, policy, legislative and management challenges which the OME community will face.

Who should attend?
The symposium will be attended by scientists and engineers working on the technology, by acquisition and logistics staff who acquire and manage capability, by operations staff who will bring the service perspective and by industry who design and manufacture munitions and associated equipment.

Format
This symposium is one of a series of Symposia at Shrivenham using a well proven format in a relaxed atmosphere within secure surroundings. Through presentations and plenary discussion, the purpose is to encourage cross-fertilization of ideas, the development of new perspectives and the challenging of current thinking. Time is planned into the programme to allow formal and informal discussions both in the main lecture theatre and during the breaks for coffee, lunch and tea, and during the delegates’ reception and formal dinner. You will have the opportunity to network and discuss issues with your professional peers who are each addressing the challenge from their own direction.

Programme
We are delighted to welcome our keynote speaker, Dr Michael Rutter, Director Safety and Claims MOD, who will outline the issues for the defence sector. Other speakers have been invited to address a broad spectrum of associated topics.

Will there be an Opportunity to Display Equipment?
This symposium provides a highly targeted audience. Time will be especially allotted to the displays and we offer companies, departments and establishments an opportunity to display their equipment or advertise their capability. The Display Space Application Form shows the options available, and costs. Please complete and return the form by 2 August 2006.
Please Note: Display personnel need to register as delegates if they wish to attend symposium presentations and meals.
Timings and registration
The symposium will be held in the Whitworth Conference Centre at the Defence Academy at Shrivenham, starting at 1000 hours on Wednesday 6 September (registration from 0900 hours) and finishing after tea on Thursday 7 September. If you wish to attend the symposium, please complete and return the Registration Form before 2 August 2006. In order to keep the intimate atmosphere of the symposium, attendance is limited to 150. So please book early to ensure a place.

Accommodation
Blocks of rooms have been reserved at three selected hotels by Venues Unlimited. These selected hotels, from which a bus pickup service to the symposium and the formal dinner will be arranged, are listed on the Hotel Accommodation Request Form. Please return the completed form direct to Venues Unlimited. Also please note that this block booking of guaranteed hotel rooms will be open until 5 August 2006. Thereafter Venues Unlimited will endeavour to reserve rooms in other local hotels.
There is a very restricted number of rooms available in the Officers' Mess for UK serving officers and UK entitled civil servants. These categories should complete the appropriate box on the Registration Form if they wish to book this accommodation.

Sponsorship Opportunities
Sponsorship is invited for activities during this event which offer the opportunity for delegates and speakers to socialise and network, such as a reception on the first evening, pre-dinner drinks on the second evening, and the formal dinner itself. The benefits available can include complimentary registration fees and display space, the inclusion of the sponsor’s name, logo and possibly full page advertisement in the symposium programme, advertising the name of the sponsor, with logo, before each break in the programme and raising the sponsor’s flag or pennant. Please contact us as soon as possible to discuss options of sponsorship and the benefits to be gained.

Resident Scholar Fellowships: The School of American Research

The School of American Research (SAR) awards six Resident Scholar Fellowships each year to scholars who have completed their research and analysis and who need time to think and write about topics important to the understanding of humankind. Resident scholars may approach their research from the perspective of anthropology or from anthropologically informed perspectives in such fields as history, sociology, art, law, and philosophy. Both humanistically and scientifically oriented scholars are

Social scientists and humanities scholars who have a Ph.D. at the time of application are invited to submit proposals that examine patterns and changes in religion as they relate to scientific knowledge and public debate or action in civil society. The program seeks to create among scholars
conversations that will further historically-informed, interdisciplinary, and global perspectives on this topic. Fellows will be expected to coordinate a capstone symposium on this topic at a 2008 SSRC symposium in New York City.

SAR provides Residents Scholars with an apartment and office, a stipend up to $40,000, library assistance, and other benefits during a nine-month tenure, from September 1 through May 31. SAR Press may consider books written by resident scholars for publication in its Resident Scholar Series.

Paolo Pertica Fellowship 2006

The Paolo Pertica Fellowship was established in 2004 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the creation, at Cranstoun Drug Services, of the first European Network on Drugs and Prisons, today ENDIPP, the European Network on Drugs and Infections Prevention in Prison. The aim is to provide opportunities to young researchers, from the EU, Candidate Countries and from the countries of the Balkans and Former Soviet Union, to contribute to the continuous development of evidence based research in the field of drugs and infections prevention in prison.

The fellowship provides a contribution of maximum 14.000 Euros.

Background

ENDIPP is a Europe-wide multi-disciplinary network working on the exchange of practices, research based evidence and concrete working experiences on the prevention of drugs and infections in prison among prison administrations, civil society organisations, international organisations such as the WHO and EMCDDA and research institutes. The network, which is active in the 25 EU Member States and Accession Countries is co-funded by the European Commission.

Cranstoun Drug Services has been coordinating the European Network on Drugs and Infections in Prison for more than 10 years and this anniversary was marked with the creation of the Paolo Pertica Fellowship.

The Fellowships wants to once again reaffirm and show the commitment of Cranstoun Drug Services and of ENDIPP to the development of evidence based research in the field of drugs and infections prevention in prison, and at the same time give the opportunity to a young researcher to enter and contribute to this specific research field. The Fellowship was named after Paolo Pertica, one of the initiators of the network and still one of its most active members.

The Research Project – Guidelines and Requirements

The proposed study must cover at least 4 eligible countries (the EU, Candidate Countries and countries of the Balkans and Former Soviet Union), be specific in its aims and objectives and include a comparative element. Proposals must be made in relation to one of the four categories mentioned below and seek to significantly expand the knowledge base in this area.

Applicants should include their CV and a narrative (up to 1000 words) detailing the proposed area of study and demonstrating how each of the eligibility criteria is met. The narrative should also include a description of the methodology to be employed. An indicative work plan and costs for activities must be included.
The proposals will be evaluated and selected by a panel composed of experts (researchers and practitioners) in the area of infections and prisons. Basic criteria for selection include: the importance of the research question to the development of knowledge in the chosen category and the quality of research approach and feasibility of the work plan.

The amount of maximum 14.000 Euro will be made available for the development of the research and must be spent within the timeframe of one year.

The study must be written in English and the Fellowship holder will be expected to present the findings in a final
paper approximately 20-25,000 words in length.

2006 Categories

The five categories for 2006 are:
1. Harm reduction in the criminal justice system (prisons, police, aftercare) with particular reference to the WHO Health in Prison Project priorities for action, guidelines and recommendations, which can be found at http://www.euro.who.int/prisons/publications/20050610_1
2. Drug use among juveniles in custody
3. Crack cocaine and other stimulants in the criminal justice system
4. Foreign prisoners/migrants drug users in European prisons – policies and services available

Eligibility

Eligible applicants (and countries where the research will be carried out) must be citizens of EU Member States, Accession Countries, Countries of the Balkans, and countries from the Former Soviet Union.

Applications will be considered for individual projects only. Joint or group applications will not be accepted.

Applicants do not require specific educational or professional qualifications, but preference will be given to proposed studies demonstrating they have the support of an academic establishment from one of the eligible countries (possibly in the form of a letter of recommendation). However, the fellowship award will not be made for attending a course or other academic study.

The applicants must have the written support of their employer, including a commitment to allow time to undertake the necessary work on the study.

How to apply

Applications must be made to the Paolo Pertica Fellowship, c/o Cranstoun Drug Services, EU Liaison Office, Rue Hotel des Monnaies, 52, Brussels, Belgium.

The deadline for presenting applications for funding is the 15 August 2006

CfP: "Global Communication of Fundamentalist Knowledge" (December 14-16 2006, The Norwegian University of Science and Technology)

Dear Colleagues,

Please receive invitation and call for papers for the conference Global Communication of Fundamentalist Knowledge on December 14-16 2006, The Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Global Communication of Fundamentalist Knowledge:

Fundamentalism and globalisation are two widely contested concepts. While some analysts claim that both terms refer to increasingly powerful political forces, others argue that neither refers to anything empirically real. This conference seeks to address the following questions: What distinguishes modern fundamentalism from other forms of religious revivalism and political activism? How do global media communicate fundamentalist knowledge? Participants are invited to address these
wider questions within the three thematic areas outlined below:

1. Community, people and state
Since religious communities are constituted in contexts of peoples, states and territories, their aims and ambitions are necessarily worked out in relation to these entities. What is specific to fundamentalism in its relation to these entities? We solicit proposals addressing this question in relation to the following issues:

* Concepts of power, religion and law in formations of communities and states.
* Concepts of power, religion and law in territorial disputes and international relations.

2. Fundamentalism and exegesis
The fundamentalist principle of return to scriptureis usually associated with literal readings, but it also means bypassing literal readings in order to acquire scriptures hidden (esoteric) knowledge and to empower true believers in relation to their others. Proposals are solicited which analyse fundamentalist hermeneutics in relation to the following themes:
* Principles of epistemic and communal authority in exegesis.
* Esotericism, aestheticism and linguistics in exegesis.
* Exegeses and changes in communities, societies, states, and international relations.

3. Media and fundamentalist knowledge
Through global media, individuals can avail themselves of a wide range of sources, including religious websites and scriptures. Is this development changing the way religion serves ethnic and national interests? Or is it challenging ethnic and national interests and creating new forms of religious and political activism? Proposals are solicited which seek to define fundamentalism from the following perspectives:

* The ways in which religious actors (whether states or trans-national networks) use global media to serve ethnic and national interests.

* The ways in which non-religious actors (whether states or trans-national networks) use global media to defend ethnic and national interests against religion

European Summer University, ESU 2006, Maritime Security and Safety in Europe and prevention of the maritime risks

The European Union is particularly concerned by maritime safety and security and environmental risks, as a very large part of European trade depends on maritime traffic (90 % of its foreign trade and 35 % of its domestic trade).

The English Channel is one of the busiest seaways in the world: all traffic (around 18 % of world’s traffic, 45 000 ships every year) between the Atlantic Ocean and the North and Baltic Seas passes through here. The ships may transport many dangerous goods: oil (70 % of European importations), chemical and nuclear products. Not forgetting the large volume of Cross Channel traffic, essentially ferries, as well as numerous fishing boats and yachts.

Navigation conditions are difficult not only because of this heavy traffic but also due to natural conditions, with frequent strong tidal currents and bad sea conditions. These problems are accentuated in narrow zones such as “Les Casquets” and the Straits of Dover.

On the French coast, the ports of Cherbourg and Le Havre are located in the heart of this particularly sensitive maritime zone. The Autonomous Port of Le Havre is 5th largest European port, stop-over call for many cruise liners.
The Port of Cherbourg, the leading French port for yachts and the 2nd largest port for Cross-Channel traffic, is also a port of call of cruise liners, as well as a fishing and military port.

This area is particularly concerned by maritime security, unfortunately highlighted by recent accidents. The Maritime Prefecture of the Channel and North Sea area is based in Cherbourg and has authority over a zone which extends from the Mont Saint Michel Bay to the French-Belgian border. In the field of maritime safety and security, public services and all available maritime structures coexist.

The Channel is an area where international laws are implemented, whether they be IMO (International Maritime Organization) rulings, European directives or bilateral and interregional agreements.

For all these reasons, the area around Cherbourg and Le Havre is an excellent example to study the implementation of different directives and regulations, and to understand international operational organization.
