2) Submit an OP-ED piece (maximum 750 words)
In many countries around the world, women suffer discrimination that prevents them from taking a full place in society equal to that of men and that exposes them in some cases to physical abuse. There are many reasons for this unequal treatment, including cultural and religious
traditions. As former President Jimmy Carter states, "Women are prevented from playing a full and equal role in many faiths, creating an environment in which violations against women are justified. The belief that women are inferior human beings in the eyes of God, give excuses to
the brutal husband who beats his wife, the soldier who rapes a woman, an employer who has a lower pay scale for women employees or parents who decide to abort a female embryo." Mr. Carter sees religion as one of the "basic causes of the violation of women's rights."

In your essay, discuss the status of women in your own country. In what ways, subtle or overt, do women suffer discrimination? What are the root causes of this unequal treatment? In what ways, if at all, has the status of women changed over the last generation? Finally, what role, if any, has the media played in your country to ensure gender equality and the rights of women? Please use statistics, studies, or other credible evidence to back up your assertions.

3) Present proof of enrollment in a Graduate program of Journalism.

4) Submit two letters of reference:
a) from a current professor,
b) from an editor you have worked for.

5) Submit only two samples of published or broadcast work. If work is in a foreign language, please send it with an English translation. Submit a curriculum vitae. Outline your previous experience in journalism and academic background. Only applicants with F-1 and J-1 Visas are eligible for consideration. Provide copy of documentation.

USA: scholarships at Drury University

Have you heard about Drury University lately? Drury University set a record this year for the largest freshman class, the largest transfer class, and the largest international class. We have also received some wonderful recognition for our private, liberal arts university. I hope you will enjoy our latest news!

*Princeton Review "Best in the Midwest"* * *
Drury University is included in The Princeton Review's list of the best colleges in the Midwest. Drury is one of 152 institutions the education services company recommends in its "Best in the Midwest" section of its website feature, "2011 Best Colleges: Region by Region."

"We're pleased to recommend Drury University to users of our site as one of the best schools to earn their undergraduate degree. We chose it and the other terrific institutions we name as 'regional best' colleges mainly for their excellent academic programs," says Robert Franek,
Princeton Review's senior vice president of publishing. The 152 colleges that The Princeton Review chose for its "Best in the Midwest" list are located in twelve states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

*Princeton Review - "Best Value"*
Drury University is one of the nation's 50 "Best Value" private colleges and universities, according to The Princeton Review, one of America's most widely known education services and test preparation companies. The Princeton Review teamed with USA TODAY to present its list, "The
Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2010." In its profile of Drury on USA TODAY's website, the editors at The Princeton Review commend the school for its efforts to give students a
relevant education while providing them with a broad world view. "Drury strives to offer an education that will be relevant to a student's future plans. As such, more than three-fourths of Drury students complement their studies with an internship during college. While Drury's student body is largely middle-class and from the Midwest, the school takes a worldly stance with its required Global Perspectives 21 curriculum-- -through which every student graduates with a minor in global studies."

*US News and World Report *http://www.usnews.com/* "Best Midwest University"*
For yet another year, Drury was ranked as #11 in US News and World's Report as a Best Midwest University. Drury was also listed as having one of the best First-Year Experiences for new students. We plan an unbelievable orientation for our students and get them connected to their classmates through our International orientation

Drury joins an elite group of institutions that have achieved business accreditation from AACSB International. Less than 5 percent of business schools worldwide have earned this distinguished hallmark of excellence in management education.

"We warmly congratulate Drury University and welcome them into the AACSB family of internationally accredited business schools," said John J. Fernandes, president and chief executive officer of AACSB International.

"AACSB accreditation represents the highest achievement for an educational institution and its college of business.

CfP: Applied Anthropology Forum: Development--2 decades of experience

Applied Anthropology Forum: Development
Anthropology Department AUCA in partnership
with the Social Research Center, AUCA

Date: 9 October, 2010

Applied Anthropology Forum: Development

Title: Two decades of experience: have we found a proper translation for the "word" development?

Synopsis: Almost twenty years passed since Kyrgyzstan became independent and took on a path of reforms and since the word "Development" entered our lexicon. Large sums of development money
were invested and great number of development programs and projects was designed and implemented. But have we yet come up with a proper translation for the word "development" ? The Russian word "razvitie" and Kyrgyz "onügüü/onüktürüü" are much broader than what is commonly
accepted as the effort towards improving the living conditions of the poor. So, when asked about the area of work, development workers in Kyrgyzstan usually just say: "I work in an international organization". Why is it so? Is it simply because of the shortage of local vocabulary or because of some more fundamental reasons, like a culture gap? With so much work completed, can we say that Kyrgyzstan is more developed now than it was in 1991? If yes, what are the real successes? If not, what are the main obstacles and failures? What is the role of development anthropology in bridging many Western concepts with the local reality?

This conference invites development professionals, consultants, experts and analysts to reflect on and evaluate their development experience in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia, present their achievements and then participate in the joint discussion of all these and other important questions.

If you are interested in attending the forum, please, contact the anthropology department at anthropology@ mail.auca. kg or 996-312-663309* 299. Please, indicate if you want to present or just attend and participate and indicate the title of your presentation.

The Max Weber Programme is Europe’s largest postdoctoral programme in the social sciences and humanities. It is funded by the European Commission (DG Education and Culture) and hosted by the European University Institute in Florence where the research community of professors, researchers and fellows provides an excellent environment for the Programme.

The Programme, open to all nationalities, is designed for junior post-docs who have received a doctorate in economics, law, history, social and political sciences, or a related field, within the last 5 years and who want to advance in their research and academic training, in an active multidisciplinary environment before entering the international job market, or in the early stages of their academic careers.

Fellows are selected on the basis of their research accomplishments and potential, their academic career interests, and the availability of the EUI faculty to provide mentorship.

Fellows are supported and encouraged to pursue their research agendas and participate in the research activities of the EUI, and in particular, the research activities of the Max Weber Programme and of the EUI Departments with which they are affiliated.

The Max Weber Programme, hosted in the beautiful Villa La Fonte, provides excellent research facilities, a range of activities to improve communication skills (writing, presentation and teaching), and actively supports Fellows looking for an academic job; for those interested, it offers a range of teaching-training possibilities (within the EUI, Florence and abroad), and it organizes multidisciplinary research workshops and discussions on different aspects of academic careers. Many of these activities are organized by the Fellows themselves. All these elements (see the Programme of Activities for more details) make the Max Weber Fellowship a unique
and productive multicultural and multidisciplinary personal and intellectual experience at the beginning of a promising academic career.

As a service to the academic community at large – especially to those starting an academic career in the social sciences and humanities – the Programme hosts the Academic Careers Observatory. The Max Weber Programme offers 1- and 2-year fellowships. The annual deadline for

Cfp - Technology as Method/Method as Technology

Call for Papers

The Sociology Students Association of the CUNY Graduate Center invites paper proposals from graduate students for the interdisciplinary conference:

Technology as Method/Method as Technology

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Anne-Laure Fayard

Assistant Professor, Dept. of Technology Management, NYU Poly

Friday, November 5, 2010

The Graduate Center, 365 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY

Sociology has a deeply reciprocal relationship with technology. As Foucault reminds us, sociology has its origins in technologies of governance, especially the birth of statistics and the concomitant emergence of ‘populations’ as objects of study. Despite critical interventions at the margins, mainstream sociology continues to treat technology as a mere object of study. Technologies generate new forms of sociality that encompass both the researcher and her method – technology is already social, just as the social is already delimited by technology.

While social scientists often associate technologies with physical forms, the idea of technology has its origins in the Greek word tekhnologia, or technique – a mode or pattern of thought that is inclusive of, but not limited to, specific ‘technological objects.’ Necessarily, systems of thought often emerge before the generation of appropriate technological objects. Although there has been some research on technological objects, there has been less interest in the techno-social nexus from which these objects emerge and the ways they are shaping method – even when method does not consider itself ‘technological.’

This conference will explore the ways in which technology engages with method and method engages with technology. What subjectivities, potentialities and capacities are being generated – or suppressed – at the techno-methodological juncture? How have ideologies and social facts preceded and necessitated technological objects? How do systems of thought generate or influence the techniques of method? What kinds of technologies/methods are we using today? How is technological change shaping the questions we ask and methods we use to study the social world? What ethical problems do technologies/methods pose? What kinds of innovative methods are researchers employing using ‘new’ and ‘old’ technologies? How are new technologies (i.e. social networking media, portable media devices, etc) shaping the methods we use? How do we define a technology/method as a ‘legitimate’ research tool and how do time and technological changes alter our perception of that validity? What qualifies old (‘classical’) technologies/methods as relevant?

Technology as Method/ Method as Technology invites proposals addressing the above questions and the following thematic areas:

* the boundaries of ‘legitimate’ methods
* transgressive methods
* methods beyond disciplines
* hierarchy of methods
* power relations in methods
* power of methods
* method and political economy
* the institutionalization of marginal methods
* theorizing quantitative methods and technologies

Please submit an extended abstract of 500-750 by Thursday, September 23, 2010.

Applicants will be notified of final decisions for participation by October 1, 2010.

This event is free and open to the public

Dear Friends / Colleagues,

I am writing this message to request your participation in the first academic international conference on `Exploring Leadership and Learning Theories in Asia 2011', which is being hosted by Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang, Malaysia in February (15-17), 2011. The conference website is www.ellta.org.

The core emphasis of the conference is on understanding Asian perspectives on leadership and learning. The questions that the conference intends to address are:
• Are the west-inspired theories on leadership in relation to learning relevant for Asia in general and different contexts in Asia in particular?
• Is there a need to develop theories specific for Asia in general and different contexts in Asia in particular?
• Are there existing theories on leadership and learning with an Asian origin, which have not received much attention or have not been acknowledged so far?

I look forward to hearing from you…quite eagerly!

With Very Warm Regards,
Muhammad Babur
