CfP: "Environment, Identities, and Space in Europe and Central Asia", University of Pittsburgh

University of Pittsburgh
Graduate Organization for the Study of Europe and Central Asia and Center for Russian and East European Studies present:

Environment, Identities, and Space in Europe and Central Asia
Seventh Annual Graduate Student Conference
February 26-28, 2010

On the eve of the September 2009 meeting of the G20 in Pittsburgh, Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, spoke of the "new challenges of the 21st century" as "challenges that have no respect for borders." Foremost among these Mr. Barroso listed climate change. He prevailed upon the citizens of all prosperous countries to cease gambling over the reality of environmental change and confront
this threat with resolve. As he put it: "The time for playing high-stakes poker is over."

>From the city which welcomed the G20 summit, first heard Mr. Barroso's call for action, and will host the 2010 UN World Environment Day, we raise a call of our own. The Graduate Organization for the Study of Europe and Central Asia (GOSECA) at the University of Pittsburgh has committed its seventh annual conference to scholarship which seeks to better understand the complex bonds between human beings and their
environments. How have societies imagined the "natural" world and their relationship to it? What role did the environment play in shaping identities and spaces - political, cultural, and social? How have images and conceptualizations of environment shifted and how did such changes affect societies, their economies, politics, cultures, and identities? As sites of dramatic cultural, social and political transformations, Europe and Central Asia offer a vast potential in addressing these questions

We strongly encourage submissions from the widest range of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities (and particularly those which cross disciplines) that address the issues of environment, identities, and space, their interplay and the way in which they affect processes in the region. Topics include but are not limited to:

* representations and interpretations in art, literature, geography/cartography, and history
* migration and demography
* policy and controversy
* "alternative voices": environmentalism and dissident politics
* the shaping of social and cultural identities
* historical legacies of land and resource use
* political violence, war, and ecoterrorism
* energy security, resource management, and cultures of consumption

Students currently enrolled in graduate programs are welcome to submit abstracts, which should be no more than 250 words long. Please submit abstracts, along with an academic CV (limited to two pages) to gosecaconference@ yahoo.com no later than December 15, 2009. We will contact the authors of accepted abstracts by January 1, 2010.

Abstract Requirements

Abstracts must be no longer than 250 words. All submissions should be in PDF (preferred) or Microsoft Word format in a standard 12-point font and be double spaced. In order to ensure anonymity during the blind selection process, the body of the abstract should not contain the author's or authors' name(s) or other personal identifying information other than the title of the paper. The cover page must
include: title of submission, author's or authors' name(s), institutional and departmental affiliation( s), e-mail address(es), geographic address(es), and a primary phone number. Although we require all of this information, correspondence will occur mainly via e-mail. An academic CV must also be submitted, but please limit these to two pages.

Paper Requirements

In order to facilitate presentation time limits, and to ensure time for active discussions, paper length will be limited to 8 typed pages, double-spaced, with 12-point font. All accepted participants will be required to submit a copy of the final paper one month prior to the conference.

Registration Requirements

To better promote a meaningful interdisciplinary exchange, participants are expected to attend all panels for the duration of the conference.

Although we cannot provide travel support, we will be happy to arrange housing for the duration of the conference with graduate students.

The registration fee is $25.00, which includes meals. Registration fee must be paid by cash or check at registration on February 26, 2010.

CfP: TIIMI 2009 INDONESIAN STUDENT INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE 2009

Indonesian Student Association in the United Kingdom (PPI-UK) has been successfully and continuously organising the Indonesian Student International Scientific Conference over the past three years. This year, the conference focuses on Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in Indonesia.

Small and Medium Enterprise in Indonesia

· Despite the absence of an established definition of SME in the Indonesian context, SMEs have indeed been playing an important role in Indonesia's economic growth and development. In hindsight, particularly it was since the Asian economic calamity that hit the country back in 1997 that SMEs gained more attention as they have been proven to be the resilient to the crises. The survival of the Indonesian economy during the whole economic predicament, up to the point when the country started to recover, to a large part owed to the SME sector.

Now a decade after the Asian economic crisis, when the world economy is again badly hit by another recession, we revisit the importance of SMEs. Clearly, the development of SME is now an important concern as it influences the national development in a larger scale than before.

Taking up this concern into our endeavour, we are proposing this year's TIIMI Conference theme:

"Small and Medium Enterprises in Indonesian Development's Multi-dimensional Perspective"

The conference aims to provide an intellectual forum to exchange ideas around the role of SMEs in the Indonesian development. As the conference gathers Indonesian intellectuals across different fields, the focus is to collect various points of view and expertises and then position them in order to better understand the development of SMEs in the country. The conference also anticipates some discussion on the facilitating and hindering factors of SMEs development, again from different perspectives. Then, it aspires to lead the discussion towards the path, or roadmap, of the future prospects of SMEs in Indonesia. This way, not only will the conference be beneficial as an academic exchange forum, but it will be more significantly contributing to the debate of SME's development in Indonesia.

As inferred from the above rationale, this conference is calling for contribution from any fields of study to engage into the discussion of the multi-dimensional perspective of SME's development, which is to include, but not limited to:

a. Economic dimension

1. Economic assumptions/ model/paradigms

2. Finance and accounting

3. Econometrics data, trend and pattern

4. Management and administration

5. Social responsibilities

6. Other economic dimensions related to SMEs; please propose.

b. Technological dimension

1. Technological change and environment

2. Innovation and innovative processes

3. Technology transfer

4. Technology management

5. Technology and society

6. Other technological dimensions underpinning SME's development; please propose.

c. Social and cultural dimension

1. Globalisation

2. Intellectual Property

3. Health insurance

4. Education for society

5. Youth development

6. Other social and cultural dimensions affecting the dynamics of SMEs; please propose.

d. Political and policy dimension

1. Government agenda and public policies

2. National stability

3. Political reform

4. Political support and interest

5. Political security development

6. Other political and policy dimensions governing and shaping SME's development; please propose.

We call for appropriate abstracts, which should follow specifications.

· Abstract: max 500 words in English (preferably UK English). The abstract must contain the main idea, brief background, research questions, brief methods, and overview of the result. Please send the abstract in MS Word, RTF, or PDF file.

Full paper: max 7,000 words in English (preferably UK English). The paper should devise a clear structure which outlines the (i) introduction, (ii) literature review, (iii) methods being used, (iv) findings, (v) discussion and (vi) conclusion. Please send the abstract in MS Word, RTF, or PDF file. The template for the final paper will be given at a later stage.

· Presentation: max 15 minutes presentation in Indonesian or English (preferred). The presentation should reflect the content of the final paper. Each presentation by the author will be followed by 5 minutes comment from appointed discussant(s) and 10 minutes floor discussion. It is suggested that the author prepares a presentation material (e.g. in slide or PDF file) although oral presentation without slide is also welcome.

· The abstracts will be reviewed by the Reviewer Board Members (non-member of PPIUK, Indonesian academics with international reputation and are currently in the UK). Upon review process, accepted abstracts will be announced. Shall the authors be willing to present their works in the conference, they have to submit the final paper along with the presentation materials. The final papers will be published in the conference proceeding which will be distributed to the participants (in print or electronically in CD) in the workshop.

In the presentation sessions, each paper will be commented by appointed discussants, participants, and relevant chair (who is member of the Reviewer Board) who will be giving advice on the ways to improve the paper, perhaps for future publication purpose. Each presenter will also act as a discussant for another presenter in the same panel. The board of reviewers will prepare both the presenter and discussant list once the accepted abstracts are confirmed.

· The Indonesian Student International Scientific Conference 2009 is organised in corporation with the Indonesian Embassy for the United Kingdom and theRepublic of Ireland.

· Conference Date:
