PAPER SUBMISSION AND REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN!

Deadline

for submission of papers: February 1st, 2011

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is a great pleasure for us to invite you to Rome for the 18th Annual Conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. EAERE 2011 will be held on
the campus of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, June 29th to July 2nd. It is organized jointly by the Department of Economics, Finance and Quantitative Methods (SEFEMEQ) and the Faculty of
Economics. While the "eternal city" is known worldwide, if only for its unparalleled past, the Tor Vergata campus is quite young, very dynamic and competitive. The Faculty of Economics
was established only in 1987 but in a few years was able to reach the upper positions in the ranking of the Italian state universities. It has held the top one for two years in a row and currently is ranked in the first three. The Department hosts an intense research and
teaching activity in environmental economics, with a PhD program in Environmental Law and Economics, a Laboratory on the environment and research partnerships with domestic and
foreign institutions.

The conference programme will cover all areas of environmental and resource economics, ranging from topics prevailing in the general debate, such as climate change, Kyoto protocol, energy policy, ETS, green accounting, valuation methods to less publicized and very specialized subjects such as biodiversity loss, waste accumulation, toxic waste disposal, packaging
reduction, adaptation to climate change, urban and transportation sustainability. We expect around 700 participants from all over the world, engaged in environment related activities in
various capacities - researchers, teachers, students, professionals, policymakers, managers.

Rome ranks among the great world capitals. The city and its surroundings offer invaluable artistic, cultural and entertainment opportunities, and their landscape has a unique historical
fascination. The University of Tor Vergata is located in the outskirt of the city , but is conveniently linked by underground to the city centre and central railway station (Stazione
Termini), which is in turn the city terminal of the Aeroporto Internazionale Leonardo Da Vinci. The other airport, Ciampino, located along the Via Appia close to the Castelli Romani, is also
conveniently connected to the campus and to the city centre.

We look forward to welcoming you in Rome in 2011!

The Local Organizing Committee

EAERE 2011

You are invited to submit theoretical and applied papers in all areas of environmental and natural resource economics for presentation at the EAERE's annual conference to be held in
Rome, Italy June 29 - July 2, 2011. All papers will undergo the regular peer review process regardless of the session in which they will be presented. Papers can only be submitted electronically through the conference website at www.eaere2011. org from November 15, 2010, onwards. Deadline for submission of papers is February 1, 2011. Notification of acceptance will be sent by April 18, 2011.

The Conference will be organized, as usual, through plenary sessions, parallel contributed and poster sessions and special sessions.

A pre-conference on Waste is also planned, together with a joint session with ICABR (International Consortium on Agricultural Biotechnology Research).

As it emerges, the conference promises to offer plenty of food for thought indeed!

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

The conference will be held in Tor Vergata's University campus, which is located in the outskirts of Rome and is as modern and as organized as any other well-functioning campus of the world, and will unfold according to the pattern of past conferences. But when we come to
social events, the power and spell of history will dominate them as they will take place in the most fascinating scenarios of this unique city. We want to give you that enjoyment and
perception of human culture that only Rome, with its vast combination of "open" and conventional museums, can provide!

CfA: 8th Summer School for Advanced Studies on Biometrics for Secure

In the last decade, several recognition and authentication systems based on biometric measurements have been proposed. Algorithms and sensors have been developed to acquire and process many different biometric data sources. The recent introduction of biometric data in
electronic documents has increased the relevance of the secure storage and processing of personal biometric data. As more security is required, multimodality has also come to the fore. Moreover, emerging applications also require to perform human identification in motion and at a distance.

What are the most up-to-date core technologies developed in the field? What are the most relevant issues in biometric standardization? What are the real and ultimate limitations of human recognition/ authentication systems working at a distance? How to develop/integrate a biometric recognition system?

This school follows the successful International Summer Schools on Biometrics held since 2003, but with a different target. In this 8th edition, the courses will mainly focus on new and emerging issues in biometrics:

1. How to exploit new technologies in forensics and in security application at a distance;
2. Identity management in new and emerging multimodal biometric technologies;
3. Standardization, evaluation and assessment of biometric applications.

The lectures will be given by 18 outstanding experts in the field, from both academia and industry. Emphasis will be given to evaluation, standardization and to define the maturity of technology for the deployment of biometrics in a wide range of applications.

Submission of applications: February 15th, 2011

Local Committee:
Prof. Metin Heper (chair)
Dr. Ioannis N. Grigoriadis
Dr. Zeki Sarigil
Dr. Nil Satana
Dr. Dimitris Tsarouhas

Call for Papers:
THEME: ARMED FORCES AND SOCIETY: NEW DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGES The empowerment of new social forces, including ethnic and religious groups, as democratization proceeds through fits and starts, as well as the 9/11/2001 terrorist attack on U.S. soil and the response of the U.S. government to it, have generated substantial challenges to national security and civil-military relations.

Civilian and military authorities virtually everywhere are seeking to define their relationship in the new setting, and along the way overt or covert military intervention has re-appeared in some countries. In countries where the military has traditionally had the upper hand, the armed forces might have started to use the new challenges to justify their domination of politics. Consequently, domestic terrorists continue to develop international links, national security is being privatized, and numerous countries are discovering that well-armed armies and police forces cannot provide citizen security.

In some cases, conflict may develop between the police forces representing the civilian government and the military holding on to power in the political system. In other words, civil-military relations take on different forms in different constellation of countries, which obliges governments to deal with challenges in differing ways. The Research Committee on Armed Forces and Society of the International Political Science Association, in conjunction with Bilkent University, invite scholars, policymakers, military analysts, practitioners and all concerned to a three-day conference where these and related issues will receive scholarly attention and scrutiny.

The Organizing Committee encourages the submission of complete panel proposals (Chair, Discussant and three-four paper presentations) , but also welcomes individual submissions for chairing, discussing or presenting a paper. Panel and paper submissions require a title and a 200-word abstract for each paper. To inquire about the conference, please see our web page or contact RC Chair David R. Mares at dmares@ucsd. edu.

Proposals should be submitted directly to the Conference Coordinator Kathryn L. Wood at kwood1@email. sjsu.edu Deadline for submissions will be December 1, 2010. We will notify participants by January 15th.

Security and Peace“) behandelt werden sollen.

Bitte senden Sie Ihre Anfrage an Patricia Schneider, schneider@ifsh. de.

CfP: Social Mobility and Migration. Multidisciplinary Perspectives, European Academy, Bolzano/Bozen (Italy), 21st June 2011

CALL FOR PAPERS
"Social Mobility and Migration. Multidisciplinary Perspectives"
European Academy, Bolzano/Bozen (Italy), 21st June 2011
Institute for Minority Rights, European Academy (EURAC) and Zentrum für MigrantInnen in Tirol (ZeMiT)

Social mobility is a crucial topic in the debate and research around migration. The elimination of inequalities in the host communities and the acquisition of competences by migrants and citizens with migration background are essential in improving their status. The key to the functioning of intercultural societies is economic, social and political participation, dialogue and willingness of all parties to be active citizens in a new societal environment. The process of bringing migrants and individuals with migration background to the equal social status in the society requires work in the field of legal framework, social affairs, labour market, education and culture. The policies concerning migrants and individuals with migration background should have a holistic approach, focusing on social and economic mobility, education, health, social services and participation in the wider societal life.

The goal of the international, cross-disciplinary conference "Social Mobility and Migration. Multidisciplinary Perspectives" is to create a forum where dialogue will develop between scholars and practitioners. Participants can in such a way share knowledge and experience about the challenges of migration and analyse, through a multi- disciplinary approach, different perspectives of social mobility.

Our keynote speakers are, among others, Prof. Dora Kostakopoulou and Prof. Marco Martiniello.

We welcome abstracts addressing the following themes:

1. Role of networks in social mobility
The role of formal and informal networks for migrants and the impact on their opportunities in the labour market, education and other spheres of life is the focus of this panel. Papers addressing the challenges to social mobility and those proposing the ways for improving it are particularly encouraged.

2. Small municipalities and international migration
This panel will evaluate the dynamics of social and economic participation in small municipalities by looking at the following aspects: Which structures and mechanisms are used to foster the participation of migrants into the local communities? What are the problems encountered? What is the role of various stakeholders? Papers analysing strategies aiming at improving participation and social mobility in small municipalities, particularly through comparative perspectives, are welcome.

3. Innovative methodologies for addressing discrimination and racism
To address and counteract xenophobia, discrimination and racism this panel will accept papers presenting and analysing innovative and creative methods of awareness raising and advocating anti-discrimination .

We invite paper proposals which analyse the issues addressed within the broader themes. Those wishing to present at the conference are invited to submit an abstract of maximum 500 words and a short CV (max 150 words) to lana.pasic@eurac. edu by January 15th, 2010. Please indicate the names, affiliation and contact details of contributors. The paper proposals will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee composed, among others, by Roberta Medda-Windischer (EURAC) and Gerhard Hetfleisch(ZEMIT) . The contributors will be notified of the decision of the Committee by the end of February 2011. After the conference, we plan to publish an edited collection with selected papers.

We appreciate your interest in the Conference, and we look forward to receiving your submissions. Please be so kind to forward this Call for Papers to your contacts and networks
who might be interested.

PhD in Sensitivity Analysis for Deterministic Controller Design - SADCO

Sensitivity Analysis for Deterministic Controller Design - SADCO

Optimisation- based control systems concern the determination of control strategies for complex, dynamic systems, to optimise some measures of best performance. It has the potential for application to a wide range of fields, including aerospace, chemical processing, power systems
control, transportation systems and resource economics. It is of special relevance today, because optimization provides a natural framework for determining control strategies, which are energy efficient and respect environmental constraints.

The multi-partner initial training network SADCO aims at: Training young researchers and future scientific leaders in the field of control theory with emphasis on two major themes sensitivity of optimal strategies to changes in the optimal control problem specification, and
deterministic controller design; Advancing the theory and developing new numerical methods; Conveying fundamental scientific contributions within European industrial sectors.

In order to reach these objectives, SADCO establishes a collaborative research and training network of 11 full partners from both the academic and industrial sectors, and gathers participants with expertises in complementary disciplines in mathematics and engineering. The network also offers a complete range of theoretical, practical and complementary training as well as scientific workshops. SADCO will work together with the young researchers to develop and implement effective training plans tailored to each individual requirements. Multi-disciplinary training based on the integrated scientific programme, secondments, regular meetings, active networking, will ensure the success of this projects.

The development of new 'clean' technologies in power, transportation and other domains is a major opportunity for EU industries. The research programme will help place EU universities in the forefront of Optimal Control, a field of mathematics that supports these technologies.

The training programme, based on institutions covering the principal areas of the field, will provide a new generation of young mathematicians with broad skills in Optimal Control, which are not readily acquired at one institution alone. They will be equipped to take forward research in Optimal Control at universities, or to work in related, emerging technological areas, of vital importance to society.
