PhD opportunity: The Economic Valuation of Flood Risk - University of Birmingham

ESRC PhD 'The Economic Valuation of Flood Risk'
University of Birmingham - Birmingham Business School

Dept/School/ Faculty: Birmingham Business School

PhD Supervisor: Prof D J Maddison

Co-Supervisor: Prof R Elliot

Application Deadline: 15 January 2012

Funding Availability: Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

Following events such as the summer 2007 floods in the UK and the publication of the Pitt Review there is great interest in the economics of flood prevention. In the UK insurance premiums are currently used to estimate the benefits of flood prevention schemes but studies in the US have found that the present value of insurance payments is less than the property price discount for living in an area prone to flooding. This PhD proposes to use nonmarket valuation techniques such as the hedonic price technique and choice experiments empirically to determine the economic benefits to households of protection from flood risk.

Applicants are required to have (or must anticipate having) an MSc in Economics and must have studied Environmental Economics and Advanced Quantitative Methods. Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems will be advantageous. Applicants should include a short 2-3 page explanation of how they would value flood risk using nonmarket valuation techniques.

Funding Notes:

Funded PhD Programme (Students Worldwide). Applications for this programme are welcome from suitably qualified candidates worldwide. Chinese students applying to the PhD Programme in Economics might be eligible for one of 6 scholarships awarded by the University of Birmingham in conjunction with the China Scholarship Council. The University of Birmingham itself offers a number of DR Elite scholarships to PhD students through its University Graduate School.

For Home/EU: The Department has two ESRC scholarships. These offer full fees and maintenance grants of circa £16,500 per annum.

CfP: Intl Conf. "Sociology and Social Work: Theory and Practice", Oslo, Norway

Call for abstracts
International conference
Sociology and Social Work: Theory and Practice

Oslo, Norway
May, 30-31 2012
The second conference on Sociology and Social Work will be held in Oslo, Norway, May 30 and 31, 2012. The location will be Oslo University College in the center of Oslo, Norway. The first conference on Sociology and Social work was in Lisbon, May 2011.

Sociology and social work are two disciplines concerned with social problems, social structure and how individuals respond to and live within cultural and structural constraints. Delinquency, inequality, deviation and social exclusion as well as childhood, family and care are other examples of themes addressed by both disciplines. Both sociology and social work deal with the relationship between theory and practice. Theory and practice are often understood as being
mutually exclusive. If one deals with theory, it might be interpreted as one cannot at the same time work practically. On the other hand, when we act in practical work, the theoretical background is often overlooked. We say: “This is theory “and the sentence: “that is not
practice” does not even have to be added. Contrary to this dichotomized view, the expression: “…there is nothing as practical as a good theory” from Kurt Lewin, 1944, shows the intertwined positions between the two. This expression has entered our everyday language but without really making a difference in how we in our professional and everyday lives understand the relationships between the two concepts. The concepts interact and are related in many different ways. To place them as two separated areas easily leads to an oversimplification.

How do theory and practice interplay within the disciplines of social work and sociology? Social work is often viewed as a practical profession without a theoretical basis for action. And sociology is in the same one dimensional way understood as just a theoretical discipline. The question to be asked is how theory and practice interrelate in different ways.

We invite scholars from different backgrounds to submit both qualitative and quantitative contributions. The abstracts may focus on theoretical, empirical or methodological aspects.

Submission of proposals:
Submissions for this conference are now invited. Abstracts (maximum 350 words) should be sent by email to Aurelie.Picot@hioa.no and/or Hege.nedberg@ hioa.no no later than the March, 1 2012.

March 1 2012: Deadline for submitting abstracts to organizers
March 15 2012: Notification of abstracts acceptance
April 1 2012: Deadline for payment for participation

Opening 1: Reliable and robust model reduction for real-time simulations
The field of research will be numerical methods for simulation-based engineering sciences. In particular, novel model reduction techniques allowing fast resolution of initial boundary value problems. The proposed research envisions contributions in the necessary mathematical framework (analysis, verification) upon which concrete algorithms are constructed (to solve practical applications) . The position requires sound understanding of numerical analysis, in particular a good knowledge of numerical methods for partial differential equations. Moreover, the candidate must be familiar with MATLAB and have some experience in implementing numerical methods.
Specific conditions: FPI fellowship funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. There is funding for international research stays of up to 6 months.

Deadline for application: 15 February 2012 (early application is recommended).
Responsible: Antonio Huerta

Opening 2: Phase field modeling and simulation of fracture in active materials and of biomembranes

Phase field models represent moving interfaces with a continuous field that tracks and encodes the mechanics of a smeared interface. These models are gaining popularity because, contrary to sharp interface models, they treat the geometric tracking and the modeling of the interfacial phenomena in a unified way, with a nonlinear, often high order, partial differential equation. In the context of two applications, the project addresses two obstacles for the wide applicability of phase-field models: (1) encoding sharp interface models into the regularized phase-field framework and (2) the need for efficient, accurate and scalable numerical methods.
Specific conditions: FPI fellowship funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. There is funding for international research stays of up to 6 months.

Specific requirements: a solid background in continuum mechanics and differential equations, previous exposure to the finite element method and computer programming are desired.
Deadline for application: 15 February 2012 (early application is recommended).
Responsible: Irene Arias, Marino Arroyo

Opening 3: Numerical methods for coupling heterogeneous models

Heterogeneous multiphysics problems described by partial differential equations arise in many practical applications, for example, whenever different phenomena have to be taken into account in two or more subregions of the computational domain or when, for the description and simulation of complex physical phenomena, combinations of hierarchical mathematical models are set up with the aim of reducing the computational complexity. The project focuses on the development, analysis and implementation of effective mathematical and numerical methods for the simulation of such complex multiphysics problem.

Specific conditions: funded by the European Union through the Marie Curie CIG Action and by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

Specific requirements: a solid background in partial differential equations, optimal control theory, finite elements method, and some experience in computer programming.
Deadline for application: review will begin immediately until the position is filled.
Responsible: Marco Discacciati

Opening 4: Computer simulation of hydraulic fracturing in three-dimensions

Hydraulic fracturing (using high-pressure water to generate cracks in the rock) is a technique applied to both fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. The project aims to develop efficient simulation methods with the objective of accurately predicting the three-dimensional network of hydraulic fractures, taking into account rock self-contact, inhomogeneity, and poroelasticity, as well as to build methodologies to incorporate stratigraphic data obtained from field technologies.

Specific conditions: partially funded by the European Union through the Marie Curie CIG Action.
Specific requirements: previous exposure to the finite element method for either solid mechanics or fluid flow, flow in porous medium, and/or fracture mechanics is desired.
Deadline for application: applications received by 13 January 2012 will be given full consideration.

Responsible: Yongxing Shen

Opening 5: 2 PhD positions with teaching duties

The candidates, besides carrying out a PhD in one of the research areas of interest of LaCÃ N, will support the teaching activity of undergraduate courses on numerical methods for Civil, Construction and Geological Engineering.

Specific conditions: the positions are associated to the School of Civil Engineering of UPC. The teaching load is of about five hours per week.

Specific requirements: fluency in English (both spoken and written) is required. Knowledge of Spanish is not compulsory but will be appreciated.
Deadline for application: immediate

4 PhD positions at ZMT Bremen

The Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) GmbH in Bremen is a member of the Leibniz Association, which is supported by the German Federal and State Governments. Through its research, Leibniz-ZMT GmbH contributes to developing science-based strategies for sustainable use of tropical coastal systems (www.zmt-bremen.de). The Coral Reef Ecology Group (CORE) at ZMT has vacancies for 4 PhD students within the following 3 new projects:

1. CANCOR (Carbon and nitrogen fixation in coral reefs - 2 PhD opportunities):

Several key coral reef C-fixing primary producers (e.g. corals, other invertebrates, macro and turf algae) and substrates (e.g. reef sands, dead coral and rocky surfaces), exhibit internal or external association with N-fixing microbes like cyanobacteria. Such association potentially
facilitates primary production and growth, but there are no studies that address linkage of C- and N-fixation in coral reef organisms and their reefs and the controlling environmental factors.

Position A: C fixation in coral reefs

This new research project, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), will quantify C- fixation of key reef primary producers, and how this contributes to overall reef C- fixation. Additionally, the influence of key environmental factors (e.g. light and inorganic nutrient availability, temperature, acidity) on these processes, both on the organism and ecosystem level, will be examined. This comprehensive dataset will help to gain new important insights in coral reef ecosystem functioning and resilience in a time of environmental change. The work
for this project will be carried out at the Red Sea and in the ZMT laboratories. The appointment is for a three-year period. Salary will be according to the German TV-L 13 for a half-time position.

Position B: N fixation in coral reefs

This research project will quantify N- fixation of key reef primary producers, and how this contributes to overall reef N- fixation and is linked to C-fixation. Additionally, the influence of key environmental factors (e.g. light and inorganic nutrient availability, temperature,
acidity) on these processes, both on the organism and ecosystem level, will be examined. This comprehensive dataset will help to gain new important insights in coral reef ecosystem functioning and resilience in a time of environmental change. The work for this project will be
carried out at the Red Sea and in the ZMT laboratories. The appointment is for a three-year period. Salary will be according to the German TV-L 13 for a half-time position.

2. Coral reef adaptation strategies to carbonate chemistry changes along the Costa Rican Pacific coast (1 PhD opportunity) :

This project addresses the issue of ocean acidification caused by anthropogenic emissions of CO_2 in the atmosphere. Many experiments have shown that calcification of scleractinian corals declines with increasing CO_2 concentration. The Costa Rican Pacific coast is partly affected by corrosive waters that well up along the coast and periodically expose reefs to pH values lower than usual and similar to those expected in a high CO_2 world of the future. With this project, we are interested to study the impact of upwelling on the metabolism of calcifying reef organisms and the adaptation of coral reefs to natural changes in seawater chemical composition. The work will be carried out in Costa Rica and in the ZMT laboratories in close cooperation with the Systems Ecology Group, the Carbon and Nutrient Cycle Group of the ZMT, and the University of Costa Rica in San Jose. The appointment is for a three-year period. Salary will be according to the German TV-L 13 for a half-time position.

3. BIOCORE (Biogeochemical Interactions Of Coral Reef Ecosystem engineers, 1 PhD opportunity) :

Scleractinian corals and reef sponges fulfill key ecosystem engineering functions in tropical coral reef ecosystems, not only due to their high benthic coverage on the exposed (corals) and cryptic (sponges) reef framework compartments, but especially by substantially influencing reef
biogeochemical element cycles. Corals continuously release large amounts of energy-rich organic matter into reef waters. However, our knowledge on the utilization of this energy source is largely limited to microbial degradation processes only. Reef sponges and their associated microbial community (i.e. sponge holobiont) take up large amounts of organic matter of still unknown origin and exhibit massive cell shedding, i.e. a constant release of particulate organic matter, suggesting the induction of a significant recycling ?sponge loop? for bulk and coral-derived organic matter within the reef ecosystem. BIOCORE will conduct integrated laboratory and in-situ stable isotope pulse-chase experiments to follow, in a qualitative and quantitative way, the cycling of coral-derived organic matter within coral reef biogeochemical element cycles and in particular the suggested ?sponge loop? induced by the sponge holobiont. The work for this project will be carried out at the Red Sea and in the ZMT laboratories. The appointment is for a three-year period. Salary will be according to the German TV-L 13 for a half-time position.

Starting Date:

March/April 2012 (all 4 positions)

Requirements:

Applicants should hold a Master or Diploma degree in marine biology, ecology, geobiology or related fields and should ideally have experience with coral reef ecology and physiology. They should also fluently speak English and possess good scientific writing skills. A SCUBA diving
license and the proven ability to successfully write scientific publications is an additional asset.

Application:

To apply, please send a motivation letter describing why you are the perfect candidate for the specific announcement and how your research concept looks like, a complete CV with list of publications and skills, and names with email addresses and phone numbers of two referees in a
single pdf-file to the address below. Only short-listed candidates will be notified.

Closing Date (all 4 positions):

January 31, 2012 or until qualified candidates are identified. The Leibniz-ZMT GmbH is an equal opportunity employer. Disabled persons with comparable qualification receive preferential status.
