Symposium: "Roots of Evil: Continued Challenges for the Denial of Mass Human Rights Violation," April 4, 2008
After the Armenian Genocide or the first genocide of the Twentieth century, the Armenian people stayed silent. After the Holocaust, people cried "never again." Yet genocide has not gone away. "Roots of Evil: Continued Challenges for the Denial of Mass Human Rights Violation," a Symposium taking place on Friday, April 4, 2008 at Fordham University, Lincoln Center at 7:00 PM, will address the impact of genocide during the last one-hundred years--and the issue of genocide denial.
Please click the following link for information on how to register for the symposium: https://www. ideologiesofwar. com/register/
The Symposium, organized and chaired by Dr. Ani Kalayjian, Professor of Psychology at Fordham, is sponsored by the Armenian-American Society for Studies on Stress and Genocide (AASSSG), the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), New York, Fordham Psychology Association, Association for Trauma Outreach & Prevention (ATOP), Fordham Psi Chi and Meaningful World. It will commemorate those who died in the Ottoman Turkish Genocide and the memory of Hrant Dink, an Armenian-Turkish journalist who was assassinated in January 2007 for his views on freedom of speech.
The Symposium will include keynote speeches, musical entertainment, a reception, refreshments and networking.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Dr. Richard Koenigsberg, Faculty Member, Institute for the Study of Violence at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, will speak on the Denial of the Destructiveness of Civilization. Nearly two-hundred million people have been slaughtered in the last one-hundred years as a result of violent acts undertaken by nation-states. Do we truly grasp the reality of destruction that societies have leveled against their own people? Dr. Koenigsberg will examine the concept of genocide-denial within the framework of a broader form of denial: our refusal to look closely at the destruction wrought by our own nations--and civilization itself.
Suliman A. Giddo is Co-Founder and President of Darfur Peace and Development. The mission of Mr. Giddo's non-profit organization is to restore reconciliation where conflict exists in the Darfur region of Sudan through humanitarian aid and services. He will speak about his experiences as a mediator working to prevent further violent escalation of the tragic conflict in Darfur. Mr. Giddo approaches mediation as a process designed to create trust through communication and dialogue-in order to prevent violent escalation.
Margaret Ajemian Ahnert will speak about her book The Knock at the Door, winner of the 2007 USA News award for the Best Book on World History. In 1915, Armenian Christians in Turkey were driven out of their homes as the Turkish army embarked on a widespread campaign of intimidation and murder. Margaret Ajemian Ahnert relates the riveting story of her mother Ester's terrifying experiences as a young woman. Her account is framed by an intimate portrait of her relationship with her 98-yer old mother. Ester's inspiring stories, told lovingly by her daughter, provide a window into the harrowing struggles of the Armenians during a terrible period in human history.
Entertainment will be provided by Quartet T, with Kristi Helberg and Amie Weiss on violin, You-Young Kim on viola, and Jane O'Hara on cello. Alumni of Julliard, Oberlin Conservatory and Mannes Schools of Music, the members of Quartet T have additional musical training in Middle Eastern, Klezmer and North Indian music. The musicians present eastern musical forms and explore the works of western composers who have taken inspiration from these forms.

Senior Researcher in Security Studies, Oslo
Senior Researcher in Security Studies, Oslo
The International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) is seeking to hire an experienced researcher with expertise in the field of security studies.
PRIO was one of the first centres of peace research in the world when it was founded in 1959. Today, it is an independent, multidisciplinary research institute with approximately 50 researchers. PRIO hosts the Centre for the Study of Civil War (CSCW), Norway's only Centre of Excellence in the social sciences. The institute is housed in attractive premises in central Oslo.
PRIO's Security Programme comprises interdisciplinary research projects focusing on the ways in which individuals, groups, states and international organizations experience and respond to a range of security challenges. While retaining traditional policy perspectives, the programme aims to develop new fields of research based on both the changing security reality and an evolving universe of theories and methodological approaches to security and insecurity. Important focal points include risk studies, biosecurity, migration, security technologies, human security, gender, political ethics, urban violence, energy security, environmental security, arms trafficking, urban violence, privatization of security forces, as well
as issues related to the phenomenon of terrorism and appropriate and legitimate responses to it. PRIO's Security Programme is seeking to address this new landscape of challenges by strengthening its staff working in the area of 'new security studies'.
PRIO's Security Programme hosts both an international peer-reviewed journal, Security Dialogue (published bi-monthly by Sage), and an international book series, PRIO New Security Studies (published by Routledge).
The programme is led by J. Peter Burgess (http://www.prio. no/staff/ peter).
The successful applicant will play a key role in further developing PRIO's research within the field of security studies, and thus contribute towards setting a distinct and innovative research agenda for security studies in Europe.
Research at PRIO is funded by external grants on a project basis. Candidates must therefore be able and willing to actively develop research projects and to secure funding from national and international sources. The successful candidate will ideally develop a research profile that combines both long-term academically oriented projects and short-term policy-oriented projects. PRIO encourages publishing of research results at the highest international level.
Candidates are expected to hold a doctoral-level degree within a social or human science discipline. Highly qualified candidates without a doctorate may be considered if the requirements listed above are clearly met. Familiarity with Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is an advantage, but not a requirement. Skills in other European languages are an asset.
The deadline for applications is 1 May 2008.

PhD position in Genetics, University of Lausanne
Hi, below please find an advert for an open PhD student position in my lab. I am looking for a motivated, technically skilled and socially competent student to join the lab on a maize-symbiosis diversity project.
Please contact me electronically or see my at the maize meeting in Washington UTA
PhD thesis
GENETIC TRAITS DETERMINING MYCORRHIZAL RESPONSIVENESS IN MAIZE
The mutually beneficial arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis occurs between the majority of terrestrial plants and Glomeromycotan fungi. AM fungi enhance the phosphate and nitrogen nutrition of their hosts and receive carbohydrates in return. Plants vary in their responsiveness to AM colonization. In a novel genetic screen we intend to address traits related to functionality of the symbiosis by examining a collection of genetically diverse maize lines for their responsiveness to mycorrhizal colonization (1, 2) . We will concentrate on genotypes displaying high responsiveness to the AM symbiosis in the absence of dependence (3). Discovery of the molecular mechanisms determining mycorrhizal responsiveness is the aim of the project. The work will include QTL and association mapping combined with molecular investigation of allele diversity of selected genes.
The position is available immediately.
Our laboratory is located in the Department of Plant Molecular Biology at the University of Lausanne, which provides an international and exciting scientific environment.
A background in molecular biology, genetics and statistics is desirable. Knowledge in plant biology is of advantage.

CfP: The Effects of International Labor Migration on Political Learning
The Effects of International Labor Migration on Political Learning
Date: June 6-7 2008
Place: Cluj, Romania
Organisers: Center for the Study of Democracy, Babes-Bolyai
University, Romania
Topics:
The workshop seeks to address the role played by international labor migration on political culture of the migrants, their family members and other people from the sending societies.
Labor migration has been investigated mostly from the point of view of economic outcomes. The remittances, developing trade networks and learning new skills have been shown to have a profound impact on the living standards of people in donor societies. There are good theoretical reasons that in addition to these economic and social aspects the effects of migration include significant changes in cultural variables, including attitudes, values, networks and norms that are relevant for democratic processes.
Various studies have indicated the existing potential for social learning from migration, especially regarding assimilation processes among recent émigrés within consolidated democracies. However, these studies seldom detail the exact nature or mechanisms of such learning and often produce mixed or contradictory results. When compared to other instances of re-socialization labor migration seems as one of
the strong contenders. Compared to civic involvement, for instance, the length of exposure to a new social context tends to be longer and exposure to diversity of a higher intensity in the case of migration. On the other hand, it is not entirely clear what kind of effects should be expected, given the vast variety of experiences that migrants can have. Some people who work abroad experience an environment with people who interact with and rely on efficient public institutions. Others, who face hostile authorities or unsympathetic local population, find support for their negative stereotypes about strangers and the inefficiencies of democratic decision-making. In addition to interaction with people from the receiving countries, group interaction with other migrants can have equally important social learning effects. Finally, the critical mass of migrants from the same country may reach a point where migrants operate in a self-contained, largely exclusive community skeptical of thers.
We are looking for papers that aim to evaluate the outcomes of labor migration on attitudes and behaviors that are relevant for democratic processes. What are the effects of the migration experience on political involvement, social capital, tolerance, left-right orientations, institutional trust, civic engagement and political participation on those who work abroad or have returned from working abroad? What are the indirect effects on their family members and acquaintances? What are the conditions under which these effects are positive for both the involved individual and his or her family or community? What are the mechanisms through which migration influence political learning? In particular, what is the role of exposure to diversity?
These questions will be at the heart of the discussions during this two-day international workshop in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The aim of this workshop is to assemble an interdisciplinary group of scholars working on migration issues as they relate to changing attitudes and behaviors and share new research results. We welcome proposals from all disciplines including political science, sociology, economics, psychology, geography and anthropology.
The workshop aims to present both empirical research and theoretical work. The working language is English.
Proposals should be sent, before March 30, 2008 to Gabriel Badescu, at the Babes-Bolyai University (badescu@msu. edu). The final program will be sent out before April 15, 2008.

PhD student position available in Switzerland
Hi,
Below please find an advert for an open PhD student position in my lab. I am looking for a motivated, technically skilled and socially competent student to join the lab on a maize-symbiosis diversity project.
Please contact me electronically or see my at the maize meeting in Washington UTA PhD thesis GENETIC TRAITS DETERMINING MYCORRHIZAL RESPONSIVENESS IN MAIZE The mutually beneficial arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis occurs between the majority of terrestrial plants and Glomeromycotan fungi. AM fungi enhance the phosphate and nitrogen nutrition of their hosts and receive carbohydrates in return. Plants vary in their responsiveness to AM colonization.
In a novel genetic screen we intend to address traits related to functionality of the symbiosis by examining a collection of genetically diverse maize lines for their responsiveness to mycorrhizal colonization (1, 2).

Today's global leaders left us nothing but collisions, unsolvable conflicts, wars and tears. Middle East is bleeding, Africa is starving, Asia is in a search for democracy, global warming and global terorism became a common problem for the unipolared world. My will is that; our FORUM being completely independent from any kind of governmental influence as an autonomous body would help to resolve these problems. We should use this international consolidation efficiently and perpetuate.
We will glad to see you in Istanbul to develop new tactics for struggling against lack of democracy, to contribute to world sustainable peace, to maintain equal partition of the resources and spreading democratic network in all locations over the world.
*For application, please visit http://www.iffdp. org **

Conference: A Framework for Confronting Identity-based Atrocities, Norway
HISTORIC "RIGHT TO PROTECT" (R2P) DOCTRINE EXPLORED AT TWO DAY SYMPOSIUM AT BENJAMIN N. CARDOZO SCHOOL OF LAW ON MARCH 10 & 11
Harold Koh, Dean of Yale Law School; Edward C. Luck, U.N. Special Advisor for R2P; Knut Vollabaek, OSCE High Commisioner of National Minorities, and Former Foreign Minister of Norway; and Ramesh Thakur, ICISS Commissioner Among Top Scholars and Leaders of International Relations and Human Rights to Speak at Symposium
Top scholars and leaders from international organizations, civil society groups, governments, and the academic community from around the world will convene in a two-day conference, R2P: The Responsibility to Protect: A Framework for Confronting Identity-based Atrocities, at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law (55 Fifth Ave @ 12th Street) on March 10 & 11, beginning each day at 8:30 a.m.
Among those giving presentations at the symposium are Harold Koh, Dean of Yale Law School, Edward C. Luck, U.N. Special Advisor for Responsibility to Protect and Vice President and Director of Studies, International Peace Academy; Knut Vollebaek, former foreign minister of Norway; Ramesh Thakur, Distinguished Fellow, Center
International Governance Innovation, University of Waterloo, and International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS) Commissioner; Donald Steinberg, Vice President for Multilateral Affairs, International Crisis Group and Aryeh Neier, President of the Open Society Institute.
This groundbreaking conference, presented by Cardozo's Program in Holocaust and Human Rights studies and the Department of Political Science, Yeshiva University will explore the application of the historic Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine, which requires that when a state is either unwilling or unable to fulfill its responsibility to protect its own populations, UN member states are obligated to take action to minimize human suffering. Since 150 world leaders embraced R2P during the U.N.'s 60th Anniversary World Summit in 2005, the international community has struggled to act on or even decide when it is facing an R2P situation. This symposium aims to assist in clarifying the contours of the R2P doctrine ultimately seeking to increase the likelihood of meaningful protection of vulnerable populations before, during and after conflict.
The symposium will be presented in partnership with the International Crisis Group, Minority Rights Group International, Institute for the Study of Genocide, and the Institute for Global Policy.
Generous support was received from Humanity United and the Darian & Rick Swig Philanthropic Fund.

CfP: Rethinking Ethnicity and Ethnic Strife: Multidisciplinary Perspectives Budapest, September 25-27, 2008
Call for Papers
Rethinking Ethnicity and Ethnic Strife: Multidisciplinary Perspectives Budapest, September 25-27, 2008
Ethnicity and ethnic strife continue to dominate the political economy, politics and society of many countries, especially those in the developing world. From extreme manifestations of civil war and genocide, through the periodic "ethnic riots" that disfigure the social and political landscape, to the quotidian politics of ethnic allegiance, ethnicity has come to the forefront of the development discourse. Not surprisingly, academic researchers in economics, sociology, anthropology and political science have over the last decade and half given special attention to this subfield and produced fresh theoretical and empirical insights that have enriched the
debate in each of these disciplines.
What is surprising, however, is how little systematic communication, let alone interaction, there is between researchers across these disciplines. Part of the reason, of course, has to do with the disciplinary languages and boundaries that make interdisciplinary communication difficult. But part of the reason is also quite simply the lack of venues for interaction between researchers from different disciplines. This conference aims to provide such a venue. Over three days, researchers in economics, sociology, anthropology and political science will present their research to each other, and try to learn from each other's methodologies, perspectives and empirical evidence.
The conference is being organized by Ravi Kanbur, Professor of Economics at Cornell University, Prem Kumar Rajaram, Associate Professor of Sociology and Social Anthropology at the Central European University, and Ashutosh Varshney, Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan.
The organizers invite submissions of completed papers or substantial abstracts (5-7 pages) from the full range of social science disciplines. Possible themes for the papers include:
*Emergence and transformation of ethnicity
*Globalization, ethnicity and ethnic strife
*Ethnicity and the state
*Ethnicity and public goods
*Ethnic fragmentation and economic growth
*Privileged and marginalised identities
*Decentering ethnicity
*Factors promoting, or dampening, ethnic violence
*Ethnic strife and identity formation
*Religion versus ethnicity in politics
These themes are listed only for illustration. The organizers will consider submissions on a wide range of themes and topics, provided they address the central issues of ethnicity and ethnic strife.
It is the organizers intention to publish an edited volume with a high quality University Press, and/or a special issue of a major journal. Papers presented at the conference will be considered. We believe such a volume, perhaps the first that bridges several different disciplines in the study of ethnicity, will have a major
research and policy impact.
Submission should be sent electronically to Krisztina Bradeanu (bradeanuk@ceu. hu) by April 15, 2008. Selection decisions will be communicated by June 15, 2008. Conference version of the papers will be expected to be delivered by September 1, 2008.

1. Modelling the use of phase change materials in buildings to develop low energy cooling.
Professor A.W. Woods BP Institute and Dr. J. Adams (BP)
The project will involve experimental and theoretical modeling of the use of phase change materials in low energy building design, especially in the context of using pcms with night cooling, to provide cooling during hot summer conditions. The project will involve development of mathematical models of the pre-cooling of air by heat exchange with the pcm's, combined with models of the nonlinear convective flow in the building which controls the flow rate; in addition, the modeling will account for the absorbtion of heat in the pcm's during the day, and the subsequent solidification as cooler air is brought into contact with them through the night.
2. Evolution of Conjugate Deep-Water Margins
Dr. N. J. White, Dr. A. Crosby, Dr. M. Thompson (BP ) and Dr. R. Corfield (BP )
Ocean basins form when continental lithosphere is stretched to infinity. During the early stages of this process, modest stretching generates an extensional sedimentary basin which evolves into a conjugate pair of more highly stretched margins. Structural and stratigraphic patterns of these margins yield important insights into
the dynamical evolution of lithospheric stretching and ocean basin formation. The most hotly debated issues concern the symmetry of this process, the form of depth dependent extension, and the possible existence of hot, cold and even warm margins.
Furthermore, the subsequent stratigraphic history of each margin is moderated in significant ways by tilting and vertical motions generated by mantle convection processes. Both topics are of considerable interest to the hydrocarbon industry.
In recent years, large amounts of industrial and academic deep seismic reflection and wideangle data, calibrated by boreholes, have been acquired across many conjugate margin systems throughout the Atlantic Ocean and, at present, within the Arctic Ocean.
During this project,a comprehensive seismic database will be developed, mapped and analyzed in conjunction with well-log information and other geophysical observations. Crustal and stratigraphic data will then be modelled using a suite of inverse algorithms which permit the strain rate history in time, distance and depth to be recovered. The main aims will be to explore how well simple models can account for a wide range of observations, to compare detailed rift architecture with predicted strain rate histories, and to constrain the history of subsequent tilting and vertical motions as conjugate margins spread apart.
We are especially interested in explaining lateral variations in thermal histories and in vertical motions maintained by mantle convection processes. An important component of the project will be analysis of newly acquired surveys from the Arctic Ocean.
This pro ject will appeal to geology and/or physics graduates who are interested in understanding how conjugate margins evolve and in how these margins record later vertical motions.
He/she will be trained in many aspects of seismic data manipulation, computer modelling and hydrocarbon exploration. The pro ject will be carried out in close collaboration with our colleagues in BP Exploration.
