Full-funded PhD Scholarship : Cottingham Rd, Hull, North Humberside HU6, UK

University of Hull: job description
Revealing the Routes to Biodiversity
To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering one UK/EU PhD Scholarship for candidates applying for the following project
Closing date Tuesday 31st May 2011; Studentships will start in September 2011
Supervisor: Dr Chris Venditti
Email: C.Venditti@hull. ac.uk
Telephone: +44 (0)1482 46 2077
Department: Biological Sciences
Co-Supervisor( s): Dr Dave Lunt, Biological Sciences
Visit www.hull.ac.uk/phd to download a copy of the application form.

This studentship will aim to understand the origin and evolution of wide-scale patterns of diversity in animals. It is currently not clear how environmental factors interact with speciation, extinction, and genetic and morphological rates of change to produce diversity. It is often assumed that these different measures of diversity are closely tied; for example, where there are more species we would expect greater morphological diversity. There is a growing
literature that suggests this is not the case: reproductive isolations can occur with little or no genetic change; genetically very closely related species can have wildly divergent morphologies; some large groups of species can be indistinguishable from gross morphology where as other, species-poor, groups are diverse. If this is the case how does diversity accumulate? The student will address this question using cutting-edge statistical phylogenetic comparative
methods applied to multiple datasets encompassing a wide range of animal groups. The studentship has the potential to contribute to a real quantitative science of macroevolution and has implications for life history, ecology, evolutionary biology, conservation and population biology. Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Dr Chris Venditti (C.Venditti@hull. ac.uk).

This full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship will include fees at the "home/EU" student rate and maintenance (€ ¢Â£13,590 in 2011/12, subject to final confirmation) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.

PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree. Successful applicants will be informed of the award by 11th July.

RKS MK AL MNE RKS
The NATO and EU are the most prominent examples on how regional integration works. For 28 Euro-Atlantic member states, respectfully 27 EU members states supranational policy-making determines not only their political and security systems; the global challenges of the 21st century illustrate the limitations of power of individual governments, these requiring common approaches. As a consequence, integration is also considered important for European security policy.

This summer academy provides students with 4 Bachelor ECTS, and 2 Master ECTS.
The students of this Summer Academy will be divided in two classes:
Class 1: The Transformation of NATO: From Defense Alliance to Security Management Institution
Class 2: Past, present and the future Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union
The objective of this summer academy is to provide students a broad understanding on the historical development, the security, and the social, political and philosophical dimensions of the Euro-Atlantic integration process. Further, the course analyses NATO’s role as an international political and economical factor and its relations with different countries and regions of the world.

Based on an interdisciplinary approach the courses combine different methodologies such as lectures, round-table discussions, group-work and students' presentations along with excursions to meet politicians, as well as professionals from Kosovo, Macedonia, Albania and Monte Negro.

Target Group
Students with different academic backgrounds and a general interest in Euro-Atlantic integration will benefit from each other in an intercultural and interdisciplinary learning process. Former classes consisted of regular students and practitioners such as civil servants, communication experts, young politicians and even parliamentary officials.

The course does not require special knowledge about NATO policies and institutions, European politics, law, history or culture, but participants should be interested in more than just their field of specialization. In class participation, especially in the discussions with experts, is essential for the course success and plays an important role in grading.
Lectures, presentations and examinations will be held in English.

Post-Doctoral Fellow, Globalization and Social Change, Solidarities: Politics and Ethics in Global Age

City University of New York - Graduate Center, Committee on Globalization and Social Change

Post-Doctoral Fellow, Globalization and Social Change, Solidarities: Politics and Ethics in Global Age

Institution Type: College / University
Location: New York, United States
Position: Post-Doctoral Fellow

The Committee on Globalization and Social Change Postdoctoral Search 2011-2012

The Committee on Globalization and Social Change at the CUNY Graduate Center is pleased to announce a postdoctoral fellowship search for the academic year 2011-2012. Applications are invited from scholars whose research coincides with our theme for the year, "Solidarities: Politics and Ethics in a Global Age."

The CGSC is an interdisciplinary working group of CUNY faculty committed to exploring the relationships among recent socioeconomic transformations associated with "globalization, " the political possibilities opened or obstructed by those transformations, and the intellectual frameworks through which to grasp these developments and relations. Doing so requires that we revisit inherited analytic categories and explanatory frameworks from the standpoint of these new historical conditions. One such category is solidarity.

Research foci might be organized around (but are not limited to) the following questions: Now that the institutions and ideologies underpinning those traditions have been dismantled, does the category "solidarity" retain descriptive power or critical purchase? What might the relevant units or scale of solidarity today? Conversely, can a renewed conception of solidarity help us to grasp certain aspects of the contemporary situation? Do we need to conceptualize new forms or practices of (global) solidarity as part of a (global) political project that might be adequate to our current challenges? Can solidarity allow us to think creatively about coming together within or across social formations that transcends the limitations of inherited oppositions between universality and particularity, unity and fragmentation, general standards or shared norms and relativism? Could a concept or politics of solidarity point toward new ways of reconciling democracy and plurality? If so, what are the ethical implications of a renewed conception of solidarity in an age of global circulation and interdependence? Solidarity might also signal long-distance support for multiple struggles in different places. Does "globalization" require and enable, or perhaps foreclose, new types of networked linkages as well as the technical, organizational, and imaginative resources for pursuing them? How does the global visibility of citizens actions, most recently in the Arab world, inform the terms of politics solidarity?

In addition to conducting their own research, Fellows will be expected to attend and contribute to the weekly seminar of the Committee and support other initiatives of the Committee, such as the promotion of conferences, guest lectures and symposia. Postdoctoral awards are residential and normally run for the academic year September-May. In addition to the stipend and a research space, Fellows have access to all CUNY research facilities.

PhD position: Experimental investigation of population dynamics under flow

Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) - PhD position: Experimental investigation of population dynamics under flow

Job description
The PhD project concerns the experimental study of the dynamics of bacterial populations under flowing conditions. To this purpose bacterial colonies will be grown in microfluidic devices. The main emphasis in this project is the development of a controllable microfluidic environment able to sustain the bacterial growth and on the accurate measurement of the flow effects on the
dynamics of the population. The growth of the bacterial populations will be observed by means of confocal microscopes and recorded with high-resolution cameras. Computational modeling will be used to control the flow conditions and to model the population growth. The PhD project will involve work at the interface between experimental microfluidic, biology and physics. Tools from
statistical physics will be employed to develop a quantitative understanding of the interplay between fluid transport and the biological processes in bacterial populations.

Research
The project 'Population dynamics under flow' focuses on the key fundamental aspects of population dynamics under flowing conditions. Examples include plankton or bacteria colonies in Oceans or lakes living and growing while being transported by turbulent water currents. The growth of bacterial colonies is influenced by several factors amongst which the local population density. Fluid transport has a key influence on the evolution of bacterial concentrations e.g.
controlling the behaviour of the local concentration and hence an impact on the dynamics of the whole population. Particularly in natural ecosystem, the replication times of the individuals can match the time scales of the turbulent fluid flows giving rise to a very complex interplay between the fluid and the population dynamics.

Requirements
We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD-student with strong experimental skills and a strong background in fluid mechanics and flow-measurement techniques. The PhD candidate should have a MSc in physics, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering or similar and familiarity with fluid dynamics. The ideal candidate has experience with the design and execution of laboratory experiments, and has affinity with numerical simulations. Notions of biology are a plus. The
PhD-candidate should also have good written and oral communication skills in English.

Conditions of employment
When fulfilling a PhD position at the FOM foundation, you will get the status of junior scientist.

You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits FOM offers. You will get a contract for 4 years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,610 euro gross per month. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33%.

You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with FOM.

A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of 10% of your time). The conditions of employment of the FOM-foundation are laid down in the Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres (CAO-Onderzoekinste llingen), more exclusive information is available at
this website under Personeelsinformati e (in Dutch) or under Personnel (in English).

General information about working at FOM can be found in the English part of this website under Personnel. The 'FOM-sollicitatieco de' (in Dutch) applies to this position.

Postdoctoral position in toolkits research and multimodal int

Dear colleagues,

The Interactive Computing Lab at ENAC (French Civil Aviation University) in Toulouse, France, is inviting applications for an Interactive software tools researcher for the Medusa project (advanced multimodal interactions, interactive software engineering and modeling).

http://www.lii-enac.fr/en/jobs/Medusa-researcher-en.pdf

Description
The Medusa project (http://lii-enac.fr/en/projects/medusa/) is financed by the French FUI (Fonds Unique Interministériel). The project aims to enable the modeling of advanced interaction techniques (multimodality, interactive surfaces, …). Through the development of a rapid prototyping platform, adapted to a model transformation approach, we seek to support an iterative design process. The target application is a airborne maritime monitoring system.

The duration of the project is 1-2 years and the start is as of now. The practical objective is to build a prototyping platform on top of an interaction and execution engine. The scientific objective is to advance interactive software modeling in order to improve the engineering of
interactive systems processes, focusing on iterative design and traceability of choices. Through this project, we also wish to foster reflection on model-driven engineering in itself: how to check specification models against system models (interaction models), how to carry out model transformation up to code generation without loss of information?

In the Medusa project, ENAC is involved in the scientific reflection on engineering processes for interactive systems, and on the design and implementation of the model execution engine. The other partners are responsible for the needs specification (Thalès Systèmes Aéroportés), system
engineering and model transformation tools (Sodius), and the design of meta-models for interaction (Telecom Bretagne, ENSIETA).

Eligibility
The candidate who will join the project team will contribute to design and implementation tasks. According to his/her aspirations and skills, s/he will either focus on development orresearch subjects. The ideal candidate holds a PhD in computer science, preferably in interactive
software. S/he has experience in programming, and/or advanced interactive technique modeling (e.g post-WIMP, multimodality, visualization…), and/or system engineering. S/he has the ability to work in a team and to take part in the management of a development project. French or English writing and speaking skills are required, both languages being a plus.

Interactive Computing Lab
The interactive computing laboratory carries out research on key fundamental issues in the design, engineering and production of critical interactive systems such as those encountered in aeronautics. We work in the following domains: Interaction and collaboration design patterns, Information visualisation, Interactive software models and architectures, Interactive
systems engineering. (more information: http://lii-enac.fr/en/)
