IFI is Norway’s largest university department for broad education and research in Computer Science and related topics. You can read more about the Department here: http://www.ifi.uio.no. The Department has near 800 students on bachelor level, 300 master students, and over 200 PhD students. The overall staff of the Department is close to 250 employees, about 150 of these are full time scientific positions: about 60 Full/Associate Professors and about 90 PhD Fellows/Post Doctoral Fellows.

The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 1 October, 2010.

Job description

The fellowship is located to the Automated Computing group at the Center for Biomedical Computing hosted by Simula Research Laboratory (http://www.simula.no/research/acdc/).

The proposed research project is titled Computability and stability of dynamical systems.

Physical processes are often modeled by dynamical systems, either in the form of ordinary or partial differential equations. The computability of such systems, that is, the possibility of evolving the dynamical system to a time T without loss of accuracy is a profound question that remains open for many important applications, including weather forecasting, financial markets and turbulent flow. One example of such a system is the Lorenz system which is a seemingly simple system of three ordinary differential equations introduced by Edward Lorenz in 1963 as a simple model of atmospheric flow. The Lorenz system exhibits chaotic flow and is generally (but falsely) believed to not be computable, or computable only over short time intervals. The proposed research project seeks to study and quantify in detail the computability of the Lorenz system and other important dynamical systems.

Applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The project proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in mathematics, numerical mathematics, computer science or physics.

Job description:

The position will be associated with the Biophysics and Medical Physics (BMF) research group. The activities in this group are centered on biological effects of ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is widely used in medicine, research and industry. To fully understand radiation actions at different levels of molecular and cellular organization, knowledge of radiation induced free radical structures and their formation mechanisms are of fundamental importance. By combining low-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations the initially formed species may be identified.

The BMF-group is uniquely equipped with experimental facilities allowing low temperature X-irradiation and in-situ EPR experiments. The laboratory collaborates closely with universities in Belgium and USA on a project: Mechanistic aspects of the transformation from initial radicals to stable products. Radiation-induced processes in solid sugars are studied theoretically and experimentally to gain insight into the role of the deoxyribose unit in the radiation chemistry of DNA. Theoretically, calculations are done using Gaussian09 in cluster (ONIOM) models by DFT and TDDFT; and periodical calculations are made using the program package CP2K. Experimentally, end products are measured by electron magnetic resonance experiments with the initial irradiation being performed at 4 K. One goal of this project is to identify which conditions are required for experimentally observing proton transfer processes and/or dissociative electron capture, as well as mechanisms and energetics of the subsequent radical reactions.

The successful Research Fellow is expected to contribute significantly to the theoretical side in this project.

Applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The project proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in physics is required.

The candidate will have a comprehensive background in DFT (cluster and periodical) and TD-DFT calculations on biomolecular organic free radicals and should have documented knowledge within general radiation physics and chemistry. Documented knowledge of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (in particular EPR) is required.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitteed no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months. PhD Research Fellow in Biology, University of Oslo, Norway

Institute of Biology is organised with one Centre of Excellence and three research programmes. The research at the Institute covers a wide range of fields within biology, such as genetics, ecology, evolution, etc. The Institute of Biology has approximately 120 employees and about 350 students from bachelor to PhD level. For more information, see http://www.bio.uio.no/

The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 1 October, 2010.

Job description:
This is a project on the link between responses on environmental changes at different levels of biological organizations, from individual performance (physiological adaptation and life history) to population dynamics and ecosystem functioning. The project is named “Environmental changes in a soil-springtail experimental model system; effects on individual, population and ecosystem levels” and will be based on experimental model systems with selected soil dwelling collembolan (springtail) species, ranging from single species cultures to microcosms and field experiments. The project addresses general questions about how differences in physiological and life history adaptation between species/populations may affect the responses of natural species assemblages on environmental changes. Specifically, the project will focus on effects of temperature changes, but also how this may interact with xenobiotic substances, such as toxins, and availability of nutrient elements. We wish to include xenobiotic substances with fairly well known effects on cellular processes and individual performance, in order to improve our understanding of how interaction between several environmental factors may have differential consequences under different conditions. The project will also address questions about ecosystem functioning by studying how effects on experimental collembolan species assemblages may have consequences for decomposition processes. By selecting appropriate species/populations the project will address questions about potential range shift and invasiveness under environmental changes. The project is part of a larger initiative in integrative biology with collaboration between various disciplines, such as eological stoichiometry, ecophysiology, toxicology, life history and population dynamics.

Applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The project proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.

Requirements:
Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant natural science discipline, with a focus on ecology or ecophysiology. A good understanding of eco-physiological and/or ecological processes must be documented. The candidate should have some knowledge of statistical data analysis. Prior experience with work on springtails is not required. When ranking qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on relevant qualifications in biology. A good background in ecological and eco-physiological theory, as well as experience with quantitative research, will be particularly favourable. Qualifications in other relevant scientific disciplines may also give an advantage. Qualifications and experience in teaching or supervising students are bonuses.

Summer School on Human Rights, Minorities and Diversity Management

21.06.2010 -- 02.07.2010

Bozen/Bolzano Italy

The Summer School deals with the complexities of human and minority rights and diversity management in Europe mainly through the discussion of the international and interregional protection mechanisms of the United Nations, the OSCE and the Council of Europe. Moreover, the wide range of linguistic, educational and political rights to be found in different national constitutional systems will be explored. A special focus explores the concept of cultural diversity under EC law as gaining more and more significance beyond the context of minority protection, as well as the phenomena of immigration and social inclusion. The Summer School will attempt to clarify what it is that forms the core of European identity and whether this factor can overcome the ethno-national legacies of the past.

We offer not only an in-depth overview on human and minority rights but also the possibility to discuss their implementation with international leading academics, lawyers and practitioners from international organisations.

As a conclusion to the Summer School participants will participate in an international conference presenting the final results of the research project "Minority Protection in Central Europe" (see www.eurac.edu/mimi). Thus students will have the opportunity of engaging in expert discussions about the implementation of minority rights and its impact on those concerned.

Applications online at www.eurac.edu/summerschool until 30.04.2010.

Tuition fee: 500€. Accommodation, travel costs and other expenses are not covered by the tuition fee. Scholarships covering the tuition fee are available. Convenient accommodation for every participant can be arranged by the organizers.

The School of Social Science each year invites as Members up to twenty visiting scholars who constitute a genuinely interdisciplinary and international group. A completed doctorate or equivalent is required by the application deadline, and memberships are awarded at both the junior and senior levels.

Memberships are awarded for the full academic year only. Visiting Members are expected to pursue only their own research, while the School organizes a weekly seminar at which Members as well as invited guests present their ongoing work. The School is not wedded to any particular intellectual or disciplinary approach. It welcomes applications in economics, political science, law, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. It encourages social scientific work with a historical and
humanistic bent and also considers applications in history, philosophy, literary criticism, literature, and linguistics. The following thematic focus is neither an exclusive nor excluding theme; it is expected that only onethird of the accepted scholars will pursue work relating to this theme. Applications are strongly encouraged from scholars across the social sciences, whether or not their research corresponds to the theme.

Theme 2011--2012: MORALITIES
Moral issues–viewed broadly–have become crucial in the public sphere. Whether they concern abortion, stem cell research, defense of human rights, control of immigration, penal treatment of delinquency, social responses to poverty, humanitarian justifications for war or interpretation of the financial crisis, moral arguments and moral sentiments are constantly mobilized in policy decisions. The inscription of this recent evolution in a longer history of the formation of moral
subjectivities certainly needs to be explored. Similarly, encounters and conflicts
between moral models should be analyzed.

The politics of moralities manifests itself in the everyday life of institutions. Justice, police, prison, education, medicine, mental health, and social work are privileged domains for the study of moral economies. Situations of violence, suffering, exclusion, discrimination, and stigmatization also involve the
construction of moral communities and boundaries, moral categories and judgments. In all these cases, moralities are not given realities: they are combined with affects and norms, just as the moral sphere is closely linked to law and religion. Social scientists themselves are personally involved in these moral issues. Interest in moral issues is certainly not recent. Philosophers have always dealt with morality; historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and economists have analyzed the formation and implementation of moral norms and values; and emerging fields, such as moral psychology and neuroethics, propose innovative understandings.

* But how can we articulate these disciplinary paradigms? How could the study of morality move beyond formal dilemmas to comprehend the ordinary functioning of social action?

* How could the interpretation of moralities resist reduction to a choice between relativism and universalism?

* How are moral economies permanently negotiated and transformed in confrontations with each other?

* How are moral and political issues increasingly associated, particularly around human rights and humanitarian intervention?

* How can social scientists continue to develop their critical approach when accounting for situations and facts so morally loaded? Under the direction of James D. Wolfensohn Professor Didier Fassin, these are some issues the seminar—-which is the second part of a two year cycle on "Values in a Changing World"—-will examine. Funding for Members Stipends are individually negotiated, taking into account the applicant's base salary and the level of sabbatical and other grant support he or she can secure. In setting compensation, the School attempts to provide half of the
current academic base salary for all Members, up to a maximum of $65,000.

In the upcoming academic year, the Institute will again take part in a program sponsored by the American Council of Learned Societies: the Frederick Burkhardt Fellowships. These fellowships support more adventurous, more wide-ranging and longer-term patterns of research than are current in the humanities and related social sciences. Applicants must submit to ACLS a research plan typically covering a 3 - 5 year period, during which time one year could be spent as a Member at the
Institute, either in the School of Historical Studies or the School of Social Science. Qualified candidates who would like to apply for affiliation with either School of the Institute for Advanced Study under the auspices of this program should visit the ACLS website (www.acls.org)

CfA: Scholarships, European Forum Alpbach 2010

Dear students and recent graduates,

With "Construction and Reality" as its general theme in 2010, the European Forum Alpbach (19th August to 04th September) undertakes to analyse an omnipresent dichotomy. Whether it is in science, in the arts, in politics or in economics: humanity has always tried to understand the way that leads from a concept to its realisation, or to bridge the gap between the two. The global financial and economic crisis has proven that despite modern forecasting technologies and the globe-spanning communication network, our topic remains as relevant as ever.

The European Forum Alpbach 2010 will give its participants a choice of 14 one-week seminars which will analyse the manifold relationships between "Construction and Reality" in a variety of academic fields. The Alpbach Symposia will approach the topic offering a more practice-oriented vantage point. A plethora of panel discussions will give you the opportunity to debate the most burning current issues in the fields of healthcare, technology, economics, international politics, space planning and financial markets. Summer Schools for European Law and Health Care, as well as a rich cultural agenda, complete the programme.

Our international interdisciplinary conference offers an opportunity to enter into discussion with renowned personalities. In a unique atmosphere, experts from politics, business and academia will discuss burning issues of our times with the participants. An extensive social programme gives participants the chance to continue debates outside the conference and seminar rooms. The special nature of the European Forum now brings more than 3,500 participants to the Tyrolean village of Alpbach every year.

To enable young people to share in this experience, we offer scholarships for students and recent graduates with the kind support of our donors. For more details about the scholarship program please have a look at our website http://www.alpbach.org/scholarships

PhD position at University of Oslo on 'Internet of Things

The group of Networks and Distributed systems at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo is announcing a *PhD scholarship in the area of Internet of Things*.

PROJECT OUTLINE

The scholarship is in the framework of the SeaS (Sensors as Services) international project aiming at contributing to the concept of the Internet of Things (IOT). IoT aims at breaking the boundaries between the virtual and the physical worlds. Thus, the IOT concept refers to physical devices, which are accessible through the Internet and thus, act as an extension to the World Wide Web. The project aims at demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of integrating heterogeneous (or hybrid) sensor technologies as reusable services within the Internet of Things.

IoT involves the use of data-centric distributed systems such as the dynamic Web, multi-scale sensor networks, network-monitoring systems, and various data-dissemiantione systems. The ubiquitous presence of such systems creates very large application networks that spread over large geographical areas and diverse intra-and inter-organizationa l domains. However, the realization of this potential demands adequate support from middleware and networks that could be used to deploy, manage and evolve such systems. In order to build a system that is capable of handling such a demanding situation, there is a clear need to develop new technologies (middleware and otherwise) for the dynamic provision of hybrid services and the scalable, mobile, adaptive and reliable dissemination of data. The resulting platform will bring additional opportunities for the development of innovative service-based systems by
exploiting the emergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), Ubiquitous Computing, and Cloud Computing environments.

We are seeking a student who is interested in designing, developing, and evaluating techniques that address these issues.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS

A PhD position is a regular job with social benefits and with salary starting from 355.400 NOK per year.
