USA: Baylor University High School Summer Science Research Program
The purpose of the High School Summer Science Research Program (HSSSRP), an annual program established in 1991, is to give superior high school students hands-on research experience by working on research projects with Baylor University science professors in many disciplines. The research program occurs during the University's first session of summer school and is open to students the summer between their junior and senior year of high school.
Students are selected each year from high schools throughout the United States to be involved in this summer research program, which allows them to earn one semester hour of college credit. It is hoped that this experience will have a positive effect on student interest in careers in science disciplines. Many former participants have successfully entered challenging undergraduate programs throughout the nation, including those at Baylor. The HSSSRP offers students an excellent opportunity to experience Baylor as they begin to consider which college they want to attend.
The director of the program is Dr. Frank Mathis, Professor of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences at Baylor University. Dr. Heidi Marcum, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Studies, is the Activities Coordinator.

The 2008 European School of High-Energy Physics, DL - 9 March, 2008
The European School of High-Energy Physics is targetted particularly at students in experimental HEP who are in the final years of work towards their PhDs. Other schools, such as the CERN-FNAL Hadron Collider School may provide more appropriate training for young postdocs in experimental HEP, PhD students who have already attended the European school, and senior PhD students in HEP phenomenology.
The Schools of Physics are designed to give a survey of up-to-date information, rather than to be a training course. An outline of each of the lecture courses and reading lists will be published on the web. It should be noticed that some pre-knowledge of the subjects is necessary in order to be able to profit fully from the lecture courses.
Preference will be given to students who have connections with CERN and JINR member states either because of their nationality, or because of their institutional affiliation, or because they are involved in an experimental programme at a laboratory located in one of the member states.

PhD Vacancy at Energy & Process Dept NTNU
PhD-position
at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (Mass transfer in transient
multiphase flow models)
Background
The area of the suggested work is within 1D transient flow models for flowing gas-liquid mixtures in pipes. Such models are based on numerical integration of conservation laws in time and along the pipe. Development of computer models then typically involve formulation of the base equations (two fluid models or mixture models), formulation of closure laws (friction models or slip relations) and testing of numerical methods (front capturing or front tracking methods, sequential or iterative solutions, low or high order schemes).
One particular issue is the formulation and implementation of mass transfer in the
multiphase flow models. Instead of assuming thermal equilibrium between the phases, we will test schemes based on non-equilibrium mass transfer models.
The PhD research fellowship is awarded for a total of 4 years, including 25 % teaching assistance at bachelor’s and master’s degree level.
Objective
The objective of the work is to explore different computational concepts for mass
transfer in dynamic multiphase flow models.
Areas of application
There will be two particular application areas for the research tasks. The main area
is the multiphase transport of oil and gas in wells and sub-sea pipelines, where mass transfer often is the cause for the transition from single phase to two phase flow. The other area is heat transfer equipment, with boiling and condensation, and a particular application is the heat transfer in concentrating solar energy collectors.
Links to other projects
The work will relate to our activities with oil companies on multiphase transport,
see the link for further information http://www.ept. ntnu.no/multipha se
We also foresee experimental activity on heat/mass transfer in a project on solar
energy, where thermal energy is collected in a concentrating parabola dish and
transported to a high temperature storage unit. There is a need for modelling natural flows in boiling systems as well as in heat pipes. See the link for some information on the solar project, which is a collaboration with African universities: http://www.ept. ntnu.no/NUFUSola r
Candidate
The candidate must have a strong interest in computational methods and programming. Suitable background can be within computational physics, fluid mechanics, mechanical or chemical engineering. Applicants for PhD grants should have an MSc or similar degree within relevant engineering or technology areas, and must be qualified for a PhD study at NTNU.
Further information can be obtained by contacting Professor Ole Jørgen Nydal, email: ole.j.nydal@ ntnu.no.
Conditions of appointment:
PhD students follow code 1017, grade 43 – 47, gross NOK 325 600 to NOK 348 900 per
year (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 43. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.
Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship
appointments in universities and university colleges. The goal of each of the
announced positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage
in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the
applicant’s plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. A contract of employment will be set up for the engagement period regulating the rights and duties of the PhD student.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning
State Employees and Civil Servants.
The positions adhere to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. Persons with immigrant background and women are encouraged to apply.
The application must contain information of educational background and work experience. Copies of transcripts and reference letters should be enclosed.
An application inclusive CV, grade transcripts and other enclosures should be sent electronically through http://www.jobbnorg e.no, ref.no. IVT-05/08. Preferably, we want the attachments in one file. Application deadline: 1 March 2008.

2008 ASAT CFP
*American Studies Association of Turkey 33rd Annual American Studies Conference
*
*Adapting America/America Adapted*
October 8 – 10, 2008
Bogazici University
Istanbul, Turkey
This conference seeks to define a new agenda for adaptation studies, specifically, as a branch of American Studies that not only encompasses literature and visual media, but also a wide-range of subject areas including, but not limited to, history, anthropology, political science, philosophy, sociology, the performing arts, and cultural/ethnic studies. By looking at adaptation specifically in relation to the United States, we seek to investigate a variety of culturally and historically
transformative strategies. We also seek to examine how the process of adaptation has been influenced by social, ideological and political factors both inside and outside the United States.
While, traditionally, adaptation refers to the transformation of literary texts into different forms of media (e.g., films and television programs), the concept of adaptation can also be applied to other disciplines. Historians engage in process of negotiating or "adapting" various histories, or dialogues, when they tell the story of a nation; politicians adapt/adopt different philosophies, at different times, to suit their particular interests; and artists and musicians adapt/adopt a broad range of cultural signifiers when creating new works, conventions, and/or trends.
The American Studies Association of Turkey invites proposals that consider adaptation, broadly conceived. We particularly encourage proposals which incorporate transdisciplinary explorations of adaptation, and welcome proposals from any field of study. Possible themes include, but are not limited to:
- Processes/purposes of adaptation
- Adaptation and its motives (e.g., intentionality)
- Adapting history for political reasons/historical reinvention
- Popular history: creation and reception
- Foreign policy and adaptation
- Audience and adaptation
- Trans or intercultural adaptation
- Cultural outcomes/products of adaptation (hybridity, creolization, metissage, mestizaje)
- Racial adaptation ("passing")
- Musical adaptation (e.g., sampling in rap music)
- Artistic adaptation
- Cross-cultural adaptation (e.g., African elements in American Jazz/Blues)
- Lingual adaptation (e.g., ebonics)
- Transformation/ transmutation of ideas
- (Re)creation/ simulacra
- Mimicry, authenticity, and adaptation
- Forced adaptation (e.g., colonization, imperialism)
- Americanization, assimilation, acculturation
- Indigenous adaptation
- Identity and adaptation
- The appeal/limits of adaptation
- Sex/gender adaptation (e.g., transvestitism, berdachism)
- Conscious adaptation (e.g., metafiction)
- Self-writing (e.g., transforming personal experiences into literature)
- Biopics
- Pastiches/parodies/ satire
- Literature/film adaptation
- Video/board games and popular songs based on classic films and/or literary texts
- Architectural adaptation
- Semiotics of adaptation
- Psychological/ emotional adaptation
- Pedagogical applications of adaptation
The time allowance for all presentations is 20 minutes. An additional 10 minutes will be provided for discussion.
Proposals for papers, panels, performances, exhibits, and other modes of creative expression should be sent to *both* Louis Mazzari (louis_mazzari@ hotmail.com) *and* Tanfer Emin Tunc (asat2007@gmail. com) and should consist of a 250 - 300 word abstract in English, as well as a 1 - 2 paragraph biographical description for each participant.
- Deadline for submission of proposals:* May 31, 2008*
- Notification for acceptance of proposals: *August 15, 2008*

environment. Your main task will be the research, but you will be given the opportunity to also acquire some teaching experience. During the three year period you will have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge by joining international exchange programs, to participate in national and international conferences and workshops, and to visit other research institutes and universities worldwide.
For further information about the Centre see the Centre's website at http://www.q2s. ntnu.no/.
At present, The Centre has vacant PhD scholarships within the following areas:
"Network Media Handling", focusing on virtual worlds. Within this topic it will be possible to combine and integrate work within one of the four challenges or virtual worlds;
Technology (3D rendering, advanced distribution models)
Quality (perceptual evaluation and management)
A User perspective (Social computing, User participation, User generated content)
Applications (scenarios for virtual words including gaming and health care)
The work will be jointly conducted with Center for Advanced Media Research Amsterdam - CAMeRA, at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (http://camera. vu.nl).
