Post-Doc Position: Center for Tropical Marine Ecology

Deadline: 25 August, 2008
The Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT), an associate member of the Leibniz Society, addresses ecological and socio-economic issues related to the sustainable use of tropical coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs and sea grass beds. Research and teaching at the Center are devoted to the structure and functions of these ecosystems, their resources and their vulnerability to human interventions and natural changes. The research is conducted within interdisciplinary partnership projects with institutions and universities in the tropics.

The social-ecological systems (SES) analysis group at the ZMT investigates human-nature relations. Participatory approaches to the generation of social-ecological system understanding and to the identification of ways to steer coastal change into more desirable directions are major foci. The SES group operates a research programme
in three coastal regions of Indonesia (SPICE Cluster 6). We are now looking for a social or natural scientist with a strong interdisciplinary research orientation. The post is embedded in the two key research themes of SPICE Cluster 6 (Social-ecological systems analysis and Governance). The research under this post should provide new insights on the potentials of alternative livelihood options (e.g.
marine polyculture) as socially, economically and ecologically sustainable income sources for Indonesian coastal communities. A focus on innovations is encouraged. The field focus of this post is in the Spermonde Coral Archipelago but the research should provide results of wider relevance.

The position is at the level of E13 and initially funded from 1.10 2008 until 30.8 2010. Further work is envisaged. The ZMT is interested in increasing the number of women in the field of science and encourages qualified women to apply. Given similar levels of qualification, physically handicapped applicants will be given preference. Interviews will be held in the period August 28 th until September 5th .

Please apply by e-mail (CV with current address and phone number, statement of interest, work proposal of 2-4 pages and names of two referees) by August 25th to zmtsekr@zmt- bremen.de.

Publication: The Political Economy of European Union Competition Policy: A Case Study of the Telecommunications Industry (by Tuna Baskoy)

* ISBN: 978-0-415-96525- 5
* Binding: Hardback
* Published by: Routledge
* Publication Date: 24th June 2008
* Pages: 262

About the Book

In the European Union (EU), competition policy occupies a central place amongst other EU public policies and is the first truly supranational public policy regulating market competition. One of the stated objectives of EU competition policy is to prevent excessive concentration of economic power in the hands of a few. This book investigates the political economy of EU competition policy by taking the European telecommunications industry as a case study. Baskoy argues that the EU competition policy has failed to achieve its objectives of preventing excessive market concentration in the telecommunications industry over the past quarter-century. He takes the controversial view that EU competition policy foremost promotes an industrial policy that fosters the profitability of European firms.
Moreover, Baskoy argues that EU competition policy is short of adequate theoretical and conceptual capacities to comprehend the working dynamics of market competition and the market behavior of firms. This exceptional book will be of interest to scholars of Politics, Economics, Business, and International Relations and Policies.

Table of Contents

1. Introduction
2. Theories of Market Competition: Towards a Theory of Dynamic Market Competition (DMC)
3. The Political Economy of EU Competition Law
4. The Political Economy of EU Telecommunications Policy
5. Implementing EU Competition Law in Telecommunications
6. EU Telecommunications Equipment and Services Market Analysis
7. Concluding Remarks.

About the Author(s)

Tuna Baskoy is Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Ryerson University.

CALL FOR PAPERS

International Conference
Romanian Identity in the Wider European Context
November 21-23, 2008
Babes-Bolyai University
Cluj-Napoca, Romania

Identity is a contemporary problematic approached almost everywhere in the world as post-modernism, regional integration, and globalization bring new challenges to national identities. We speak more and more about the identity crisis at various levels and multiple explanations, causes and implications were identified.

In this context, the Centre for Political Analysis launches a debate regarding the issue of Romanian identity in the European context, trying to answer questions like: Who are we, the Romanians? What is the substance of our national identity? What brings us together and what differentiates us from the rest of the EU and Europe? What can Europe provide and what can we provide? Do Romania and Europe face an identity crisis?

Given the topic, we choose a multi and inter-dissciplinary approach that results in eight broader topics that supplement two plenary sessions with lectures given by known researchers and activists in the field of (Romanian) identity. The workshops will allow participants to present their own works, to receive and provide comments, and to create networks with peers from other universities/ departments. We encourage graduate students and researchers to apply with a paper on one of the following topics:

1. The contemporary components of Romanian identity
2. Identity and religion in Romania
3. Individual and collective perceptions of identity
4. Forms of representing the Romanian identity in everyday life (representation in art, literature, traditions, beliefs)
5. From history to historical: the Romanian identity between ’natural growth’ to ’cult construction’

CRRC Publication Research Fellowship 2008 Available

Explore issues - handle data - satisfy your curiosity - get published - generate opportunities

CRRC is offering a round of research fellowships. Are you curious about a social issue? Do you have some ideas or hypotheses that you want to explore further? This fellowship could be the perfect opportunity for you!

What issues are we looking to address?
We're looking for social science research that addresses pressing issues your country faces. The Millennium Development Goals (click here) constitute one such urgent research agenda. Other likely issues include child poverty, youth, social capital, migration and democratization. Pretty much any advanced analysis based on our Data Initiative is of interest to us. We can also help you develop your topic if you are unsure about it, but are committed to undertaking professional research. Check "CRRC Fellowship" in the label cloud on the left.

What results?
We want you to produce international quality research. You should aim to publish your research in a peer-reviewed journal (we will help you find one). This will give your research international recognition. We also expect your work to contain prescriptive richness and ask you to present your findings to relevant interested groups (international, organizations, NGOs, government agencies) in your home country. We definitely want you to use some of our great data from the Data initiative 2007.

Who is the fellowship for?
You are smart, committed, curious and want to apply all your abilities. Typically you will have at least a Master's Degree. You are committed to develop your research ability and have a track record of excellence. You may work in fields other than research, but you are interested in getting back into research because you realize there are excellent long-term opportunities there. We require a working knowledge of English, since you want to publish internationally. Exceptions can be made for those doing quantitative and survey work. (Sorry, no funding for stipends abroad, or for those who live outside the Caucasus.)

What do you get?
Primarily you get the satisfaction of doing excellent work and of being part of a small but vibrant community of internationally recognized research scholars in the South Caucasus. Moreover, if you get published internationally, many opportunities follow. The fellowship provides an opportunity to prove your professionalism, which you can use for many other applications (jobs, consultancy work, joint research projects, conference participation, international research stipends such as CRRC's Carnegie Fellowship, to name the most obvious). Depending on your research project, you can also get between USD 2000 and 4000 for pursuing your research interest (surveys, for example, may have higher costs).

Is it easy?
Yes and no. We will help at every step. But it certainly is not easy money. In research you confront new challenges and difficult decisions all the time. That is why we are doing it, after all. It requires determination and persistence -- we hope you will join us in the thrill of discovery.

How to prepare?
Our online application procedure is specifically designed to help you develop your research proposal. Write us a short email now (latest by July 18, 2008) to Melissa at melissa@crrccenters.org to find out more, telling us about your field or interest, and, if you have it, your provisional research topic. We will end you an email to let you know about the next step and to invite you to discuss your ideas at our open houses.

Conference announcement - Rethinking Religion in India II: ‘Rethinking Secularism’

Announcement and Call for Papers
Rethinking Religion in India II: 'Rethinking Secularism'
10-13 January 2009 – India (venue will be announced soon)

www.cultuurwetenschap.be/conferences/RRI

Dear colleague,

We would like to invite you for the second conference of Rethinking Religion in India: 'Rethinking Secularism'.

When India became independent in 1947 there were high hopes that secularism would adequately protect the nation against communal strife. Six decades later, however, recurrent communal riots, the rise of Hindutva and key events like the destruction of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya have led to a crisis of Indian secularism. Nevertheless, no adequate understanding of the nature of these problems is provided by the current social sciences. Instead, an ideological struggle between secularism and Hindutva has hijacked all reflection and debate on the nature of Indian culture and society.

Rethinking Religion in India II is the initiative of a group of intellectuals who think this clash between secularism and Hindutva is pernicious. Within the general aims of the five-year conference cluster, this second conference intends to move beyond the framework which presents liberal secularism as the only possible solution to communal strife. Under the motto of "Rethinking Secularism," it will examine the limitations of the conceptual framework shared by Hindutva and secularism. The Research Centre Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenschap (Ghent University, Belgium), India Platform UGent (Ghent University, Belgium), the Centre for the Study of Local Cultures (Kuvempu University, India) and the Karnataka Academy of Social Sciences and Humanities (Karnataka, India) invite you for four days of reflection on the possibilities that lie beyond this normative straitjacket.

The conference will work towards these ambitions in four formats:

- The Platform Sessions will have a one-on-one debate between two thinkers who will focus on the question "Is secularism the solution to communal conflict in India?" Achin Vanaik (Delhi University) and Jakob De Roover (Ghent University) have been invited as central speakers in the debate.

- The Roundtable Sessions will invite a distinguished group of thinkers to reflect on three different problems related to the aim of rethinking secularism: (1) Freedom of Religion and Religious Conversion; (2) Secularism, Hindutva and the Aryan Invasion Theory; and (3) Liberal Secularism and Religious Fundamentalism: Opposites or Alter Egos? A preliminary list of speakers and respondents consists of Ashis Nandy (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies); Dilip K. Chakrabarty (University of Cambridge); Edwin Bryant (State University of New Jersey); Scott Appleby (University of Notre Dame); Winnifred F. Sullivan (State University of New York); Akeel Bilgrami (Columbia University); Geoffrey Oddie (The University of Sydney); Laurie L. Patton (Emory University); Richard King (Vanderbilt University); S.N. Balagangadhara (Ghent University); Vivek Dhareshwar (Centre for the Study of Culture and Society), Timothy Fitzgerald (University of Stirling).

A call for papers is open for the following two sessions (www.cultuurwetenschap.be/conferences/RRI > call for papers):

- The Parallel Paper Sessions will deal with (1) Indian Religion and the Issue of Conversion; (2) The Caste System and Indian Religion; (3) Colonialism and Religion in India; (4) Religion and Law in India. We invite submission of abstracts for these sessions. The abstracts should clearly address the questions formulated on our website.

- "How To…?" Workshop sessions: One of the workshops will deal with the question 'How to teach about the Indian traditions and religions?' We invite proposals for workshops dealing with similar questions. Workshop proposals should explain why this workshop is relevant in India today and why it is important vis-à-vis the general objectives of Rethinking Religion in India.

For more information, please visit our website at www.cultuurwetenschap.be/conferences/RRI

A number of interviews, presentations and debates of the first conference, Rethinking Religion in India I, can be watched on www.youtube.com/cultuurwetenschap

Three (3) Sanitation Related PhD Positions

PhD positions available at UNESCO-IHE in collaboration with Makerere University and the Kampala City Council in Uganda

An interdisciplinary research program entitled "*Integrated approaches and strategies to address the Sanitation Crisis in Unsewered Slum Areas in African mega-cities (SCUSA)*", funded by the UNESCO-IHE Partnership Research Fund (UPaRF), will be carried out by UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (Delft, The Netherlands) , Makerere University, and the Kampala City Council, both in Uganda.

The SCUSA research program addresses one of the most relevant developmental issues worldwide: a reduction of under-5 child mortality rates due to water-borne diseases, and malnutrition in low-income unplanned urban settlements. As such, the project will contribute to the realization of Millenium Development Goal 7, Target 10 (i.e. to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water). The SCUSA research program has identified three projects, centered around a slum area of Kampala. To carry out these research projects, three strongly
interdisciplinary PhD positions are vacant.

Project description

The development and expansion of informal settlements in the peri-urban areas of African cities is widespread, while these cities harbour the majority of the urban population. Peri-urban areas, or slums, are characterized by, among other things, poorly constructed houses, poor water supply and sanitary conditions, and lack or inadequate support services.

Besides the spreading of diseases related to surface water (e.g. malaria), one of the main problems associated with sanitation and water in peri-urban areas is related to the pollutant load entering and leaving the peri-urban catchment, either as surface water or groundwater. This water is polluting drinking water (with increased incidence of cholera and diarrhoea) or eutrophying surface water, due to extremely high nutrient fluxes discharged from the surrounding catchments. As a result, the main research question of the SCUSA research program is: *How to improve sanitation in peri-urban urban slum areas?*

Ph.D. project
1: Wastewater and solid waste treatment and reuse Ph.D. project
2: The socio-economic aspects of improving sanitation Ph.D. project
3: Hydrology and contaminant transport*The following applies to all 3 Ph.D. positions:*

- All topics will be carried out in a so-called sandwich construction with different phases at UNESCO-IHE in the Netherlands and field research in Uganda (with regular contacts with Ugandan and Dutch supervisors) .
- PhD positions are funded with a fellowship for which NUFFIC regulations apply.
- Starting date: January 1, 2009, for 4 years.
- Qualifications: MSc degree (average mark: 80% or above) in a discipline relevant to the topic, e.g. environmental engineering, sanitation, socio-economics of the water sector, water resource economics, hydrology and water resources.
- The applicant must demonstrate a strong interest and experience in conducting interdisciplinary research.
- The applicant must be willing to do research in a team, share his results with the SCUSA research team and advise fellow Ph.D. researchers when necessary.
- The applicant should be willing to co-supervise MSc research projects.
- The applicant must be fluent in English (e.g. TOEFL paper based score of at least 550).
- Excellent reporting skills and shown ability to publish in the scientific literature.
- Knowledge of the African sanitation field is desirable.
- Age: 40 years and below.

For questions, please mail Prof. Dr. Frank Kansiime (fkansiime@muienr. mak.ac.ug) or Dr. Jan Willem Foppen of UNESCO-IHE (j.foppen@unesco- ihe.org).

Applications, including curriculum vitae, a motivation letter and 2 letters of recommendation, as well as the names and contact details of three contactable referees, all in one pdf file, should be sent by email to t.morgenstond@ unesco-ihe. org before *September 1st 2008*.

Please mention in the subject heading "PhD application SCUSA project *x*", where *x* refers to the Ph.D. projects mentioned above. Short-listed candidates will be contacted before October 1st 2008 to set a date of an interview, possibly via video-conferencing.

Challenges the role of the "race card" in contemporary politics

THE NEW NATIVISM: Proposition 187 and the Debate over Immigration
Robin Dale Jacobson
University of Minnesota Press | 224 pages | 2008
ISBN 978-0-8166-5027- 9 | hardcover | $60.00
ISBN 978-0-8166-5028- 6 | paperback | $19.95

Examining the dynamics of the Proposition 187 political battle, The New Nativism questions racism as the motivating factor for political action both at the time and in the high-stakes, hotly contested immigration debates of today. Moving beyond inflammatory headlines and polarizing rhetoric, Jacobson reveals that it is not so much prejudice but the very act of defining race that lies at the center of modern
American politics.

"Robin Dale Jacobson has produced a subtle, brilliantly argued account of how California's Proposition 187 was enacted and came, despite its main measures being found unconstitutional, to exercise a profound influence on the legal, economic, cultural, and political dimensions of U.S. citizenship. It is a major achievement. " -Desmond King, University of Oxford

An unconventional- and critical-examinatio n of "the city with no past" THE DALLAS MYTH: The Making and Unmaking of an American City Harvey J. Graff
University of Minnesota Press | 416 pages | 2008
ISBN 978-0-8166-5269- 3 | hardcover | $34.95

Harvey J. Graff presents a novel interpretation of Dallas, a city that has proudly declared its freedom from the past. Revealing the power of myths that have defined it for so long, Graff presents a new understanding of Dallas that both deepens our knowledge of America's urban landscape and enables us to envision a more equitable, humane, and democratic future for all.

"Harvey Graff begins by telling us that living in Dallas challenged all that he knew about cities. This richly-researched and beautifully- written book does the same for the rest of us. Its provocative historical analysis of space, growth, economics, politics, culture, and memory offers an uncommonly lucid account of inequality, segregation, and their denial." -Ira Katznelson, author of When Affirmative Action Was White

"The Dallas Myth is an entertaining and meditative reflection on history and the imagination, written with the clear, grounded intelligence of a leading historian at the top of his game." -Michael Frisch, author of Portraits in Steel

A fascinating study of how taxidermy reinforces racial stereotypes of aboriginality
TAXIDERMIC SIGNS: Reconstructing Aboriginality Pauline Wakeham
University of Minnesota Press | 280 pages | 2008
ISBN 978-0-8166-5055- 2 | paperback | $22.50
ISBN 9 78-0-8166-5054- 5 | hardcover | $67.50

In Taxidermic Signs, Pauline Wakeham decodes the practice of taxidermy as it was performed in North America from the late nineteenth century to the present, revealing its connection to ecological and racial discourses integral to the maintenance of colonial power. Moving beyond the literal practice of stuffing skins, Wakeham theorizes taxidermy as a sign system that conflates "animality" and
"aboriginality" within colonial narratives of extinction.
