The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting Travel Grants

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting provides travel grants to cover hard costs associated with upcoming travel for an international reporting project. Our ideal project offers print, photography, radio, and video.

*We are not currently accepting submissions for video-only projects.

A common misperception of the Pulitzer Center is that we are primarily seeking "conflict" reporting. This is not the case. Our definition of "crisis" is broad. We see great value in covering the too often under-reported systemic level crises, from environmental issues and struggles for resources or human rights abuses, to post-conflict reconstruction, or brewing ethnic tensions. We are interested in the stories
that would typically not make the headlines without our support.

*Request for proposals: Sudan in transition http://pulitzercenter.org/open.cfmid=1084
*

*Terms of travel grant:*

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting funds international travel costs associated with reporting projects on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream American media.

The amount of individual travel grants will depend on the specific project and detailed budget planning. Most awards fall in the range of $2,000 to $10,000 but depending on project specifics may be as much as $20,000.

On approved projects, half of the grant amount is generally paid just before travel and the remainder on submission of the principal material for publication or broadcast. Specific grant terms are negotiated during the application process.

*Distribution: *

Proposed projects must include a credible plan for broad dissemination of the resulting work in U.S. media (print and/or broadcast). Applicants should be able to demonstrate interest from editors and/or producers working in wide-reaching U.S. media outlets. See below for eligible outlets.

http://www.pulitzercenter.org/openmenu.cfm?id=7#outlets

The credibility of a distribution plan is generally most evident in an applicant's track-record working with the listed outlets. Please do not have editors send letters simply stating they would consider the work. Letters from editors and/or producers who have worked with you in the past, and are interested in working with you again, are encouraged.

*Cross-Platform: *

The Pulitzer Center is increasingly seeking multi-media projects that combine print/photography and video to explore the issues. We encourage applicants to create partnerships with others and propose a complimentary suite of deliverables. If you are only working in one medium, you may still apply.

*Eligibility: *

Grants are open to all journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers; staff journalists as well as free-lancers of any nationality are eligible to apply.

*How to apply:*

Applications should be submitted by email to info@pulitzercenter .org.

*Even if you are submitting sample materials via hard copies, *electronic versions of the proposal MUST also be e-mailed to this address or else they will not be considered.*

Applications must be received in English.

Applications should include the following in the body of the e-mail:

- A description of the proposed project, including distribution plan, in 250 words or less to be included in the body of the e-mail.

- A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs. Travel grants cover hard costs associated with the reporting, please do not include stipends for the applicants. Fixer/translator/ driver fees are acceptable;

- Three links to samples of work if available online (if not available, please attach to the e-mail; video samples can be sent by mail to below address in DVD format);

- Three professional references. These can be either contact information, or letters of recommendation (can be attached or sent separately). The latter is encouraged when letters from interested producers or editors are available.

- As attachment: Curriculum vitae;

(Note: Applications may also include a more detailed description of project but this will be considered as optional supplement only. The most important part of the submission is the 250-word summary.)

*Deadline:* Rolling

Within a week of your submission, you should receive a confirmation of receipt.

Typically applications that are received in a given month receive a response by the end of the following month, with an emphasis on making Pulitzer Center projects as timely and newsworthy as possible.

If your proposal requires immediate attention, please note why in your cover letter.

*Address for mailing hard copies and DVDs:*

*Remember to also send the electronic versions toinfo@pulitzercent er.org.

Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting
1779 Massachusetts Ave., NW
Suite 615
Washington, DC
20036

*Frequently Asked Questions:*

1) What outlets do you consider "wide-reaching"

The Center is seeking to reach the widest possible audience in the United States, therefore we typically look for platforms with circulation and/or broadcast numbers of at least 50,000 or more. Online-only outlets will also be considered, but we prefer to see this combined with a traditional print publication and/or on-air broadcast.

2) Are foreign language publications in the U.S. sufficient?

Yes, however they must meet the above criteria within the U.S., and materials for our site and all correspondence with the Center must still be in English; therefore fluency in English is required from at least one member of the team.

3) Are English language publications/ broadcasts that are not disseminated in the U.S. sufficient for the distribution plan?

No. Once approved, we encourage dissemination in as many outlets as possible, including abroad, but to be considered for the travel grant, the Center will need to see a plan for dissemination in the U.S. as well.

The goal of this project is to investigate innovative statistical approaches that offer ways to reduce the number of animals in future toxicology studies to obtain the same information as is currently the case, or obtain more information from existing data sets (better study design, dose-response models, more accurate response variables, complex hierarchical clustering models. Longitudinal models,€ ¢â’ ¦).

In addition and also within the "Rs" initiative, this project wants to investigate the predictive potential of particular in-vitro tests for in-vivo animal experiments. To that purpose multivariate projection methods, surrogate-marker methodologies, joint modeling of multivariate outcomes of different data types,.. will be in demand.
The main goal of this 6 months period is to prepare the candidate for a Baekeland Grant. Both in September and in January an application for such grant will be submit and an extension for the next 4 years is conditional on the success of these applications. Summer School on Human Rights, Minorities and Diversity Management

Summer School on Human Rights, Minorities and Diversity Management

21.06.2010 АавтТаТ│ 02.07.2010

Bozen/Bolzano АавтТаТ│ Italy

The Summer School deals with the complexities of human and minority rights and diversity management in Europe mainly through the discussion of the international and interregional protection mechanisms of the United Nations, the OSCE and the Council of Europe. Moreover, the wide range of linguistic, educational and political rights to be found in different national constitutional systems will be explored. A special focus explores the concept of cultural diversity under EC law as gaining more and more significance beyond the context of minority protection, as well as the phenomena of immigration and social inclusion. The Summer School will attempt to clarify what it is that forms the core of European identity and whether this factor can overcome the ethno-national legacies of the past.

We offer not only an in-depth overview on human and minority rights but also the possibility to discuss their implementation with international leading academics, lawyers and practitioners from international organisations.

As a conclusion to the Summer School participants will participate in an international conference presenting the final results of the research project АавтТаТ╝Minority Protection in Central EuropeАавтТаТ╜ (see www.eurac.edu/mimi). Thus students will have the opportunity of engaging in expert discussions about the implementation of minority rights and its impact on those concerned.

Applications online at www.eurac.edu/summerschool until 30.04.2010.

Tuition fee: 500АавтТвм. Accommodation, travel costs and other expenses are not covered by the tuition fee. Scholarships covering the tuition fee are available. Convenient accommodation for every participant can be arranged by the organizers.

CfA: to MA MIREES (University of Bologna)

Dear colleague,

I would like to remind you that the next deadline for applications to the two-year Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Research and Studies on Eastern Europe (MIREES) is May 17th, 2010.

This programme, which might be of interest for your students, was launched some years ago by the University of Bologna, Italy together with the Vytautas Magnus University at Kaunas, Corvinus University of Budapest and St Petersburg State University, who awards a joint diploma. The University of Ljubljana is an associate partner that offers additional mobility for students.

The programme is taught entirely in English (120 ECTS) and MIREES students will spend the first year in Forlì (one of the five campuses of the University of Bologna), while in the second year a minimum of 5 months will be spent at Partner Universities (including Ljubljana) and, in particular cases, at other MIREES Associated Universities in the Balkans. A mobility grant is offered to all enrolled students.
More detailed information on the teaching plan and the Faculty, together with the application form, can be found at our web site: http://www.mirees.unibo.it/ .

The programme is especially recommended for prospective PhD students. Our best alumni are currently attending doctorate programmes at the Universities of Oxford, Kent, the New School in New York and other prestigious international academic institutions. Moreover, the programme is designed to forge analysts, area experts, consultants and mediators, to meet the needs of research institutes, the European Commission, international agencies, voluntary organizations and NGO's, public administration, managers, corporations and banks located in East-Central Europe and the Balkans or promoting investments in these regions. Most of our alumni have found employment precisely in these fields.

The MIREES programme offers specialized, in-depth knowledge of the post-socialist countries in transition, the new EU member states, and the new East-European neighbour countries to students with a BA in Economics, Politics, International Relations, History, Languages (and Slavic languages in particular), agricultural studies and cultural studies generally.

The programme aims at developing language skills. MIREES offers courses in Bosnian-Croatian- Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, and Slovak (Hungarian and Lithuanian are also available in the 2nd year), as well as Italian for foreigners as an additional option. The curriculum stresses on interdisciplinary studies in the economics of transition; politics and international relations; history and cultural studies focused on Central, Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The international dimension of the programme is enhanced through student mobility, by an international faculty composed of prominent scholars of international repute, and a genuinely international student body. (In the previous cycles we enrolled students from 21 countries including the US, Mexico, Russia, Georgia, Estonia, Macedonia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, Germany, United Kingdom, Turkey, Albania, Poland, Armenia, Norway, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Azerbaijan, Slovak Republic, Finland and, of course, Italy.)

Therefore, we would be extremely grateful if you could encourage your BA students to consider applying to this two year programme and, at the same time, if you could forward this message to your colleagues interested in this part of the world. With this in mind we are sending you as an attachment our promotional flyer in a pdf file. It briefly covers all the general aspects of the programme, as well as the mission and the profile of our Master of Arts.

Should you need further information, please feel free to contact the Tutor of the course at facscpol-fo. tutormirees@ unibo.itor the Faculty Student Office (info.spfo@unibo. it, phone +39.0543.374100) .

Cfa: Ohrid Summer University, 16-29 August 2010

Euro-BaIkan Institute for Social and Humanities Research, Skopje, Republic of Macedonia is announcing

Summer School
*“Reconstructing Imaginary and Real Byzantium: Historical and Cultural Legacy that Divide and Integrate Europe” * to be held 16th-29th August, Ohrid, Macedonia

The Summer School “Reconstructing Imaginary and Real Byzantium: Historical and Cultural Legacy that Divide and Integrate Europe” will explore the complex and fascinating phenomenon that is the Byzantium and its legacy, striving to go beyond the established approach in the study of Byzantine history and culture. The objective of the Summer School is to distance from the stereotyped application of “Byzantinism” and to introduce the Real instead of Imaginary Byzantium. Apart from the historical analysis of the origins of Byzantium and its development as a separate political and
cultural entity that dominated Eastern Mediterranean for more than a millennium, the various questions concerning the interpretation/ misinterpretatio n of the Byzantine legacy in the conceptualization of European civilization will be discussed. The Summer School will explore the Byzantine studies in the Western Europe and “put
them in a dialogue” with those taking place in Southeastern Europe. Its main goal is to stimulate the critical thinking of the understanding of Byzantium and its heritage not as a factor of the East-West division, but as an integrative civilizational bridge between the Balkans/Southeast Europe and Western Europe.
