3rd CES-METU Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence PhD Workshop

*Enlargement of the EU and its effect on European Neighbourhood, Culture, History and Citizenship *

*24-25 June 2010 ***

Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, Center for European Studies at the Middle East Technical University is organizing on 24-25 June 2010 in Ankara on Enlargement of the EU and its effect on European Neighbourhood, Culture, History and Citizenship. The PhD Workshop of CES-METU aims to bring together students at any stage of their PhD work (students just starting their PhDs, those in the middle and close to completion) studying on topics related to European integration with a special emphasis on enlargement and European culture, history and citizenship, evolution of the EU in its Negihbourhood, Turkey and EU relations while bringing together theoretical and practical aspects of European integration.

Since the end of the Cold War the external relations of the EU including its foreign policies become central in the debate revolving around Turkey-EU relations. The EU has been putting efforts in establishing credible and effective relations with the rest of the world i.e. Africa, Latin America, Asia, Far East and its neighbouring region more than two decades now. In its external relations its neighbouring regions acquired a special focus and since 2004 the EU’s relations with its neighbours have been conducted according to its Neighbourhood Policy. Furthermore, identity and cultural aspects of the relations between the EU and the neighbouring regions
affected the economic, political and institutional development of these neighbourhood relations. In this framework the PHD Workshop will provide seminars and debate on;

- EU enlargement and European culture, history and citizenship

- EU’s external relations in general

- European Neighbourhood Policy

- Turkey-EU relations

Participants are expected to present their research and discuss the particulars of their research agendas with their fellows and scholars from Turkey and the ERA. In addition to presenting a paper based on the doctoral research carried out, each participant will also be expected to act as a discussant to another presentation, and to contribute to the general discussion of paper presentations throughout the workshop.

The accepted papers will be published online on the web page of CES-METU Jean Monnet Center of Excellence and also will be published in the workshop proceedings.
