Tasmanian International Scholarships

The University of Tasmania’s (UTAS) Tasmanian International Scholarships currently provide a 25% reduction in tuition fees for more than 600 of our international student at UTAS. Features of the TIS are as follows:

25% off the registered tuition fees for the entire course, including an honours year
Available to all undergraduate degrees (except Medicine, Pharmacy, Medical Research and Psychology) and to Foundation Studies and postgraduate coursework programs
Applicants can apply for start of year or mid year intakes
Awarded on academic achievement in secondary, diploma or degree level courses
To Apply - All applicants who complete an International Student Application Form to study at UTAS are assessed for a scholarship and are notified in writing if they have been successful.

This is a very transparent and open scholarship. Applicants are notified immediately if they are eligible, so there is no vague promise of a scholarship and there is no cost to apply. Parents like this transparency as it makes budgeting for their son or daughter’s study overseas easier. Tuition fees are also fixed at the commencement rate until the student finishes their study. This also makes budgeting much easier.

If you require any further information about TIS, please contact me.

Open two PhD positions (Germany 50% BAT IIa/E13 TV-L)

Emmy Noether Research Group for Neural Control, Memory, and Learning for Complex Behaviors in Multi Sensori-Motor Robotic Systems

Open two PhD positions (Germany 50% BAT IIa/E13 TV-L)

Background:

The goal of this research group is to investigate and develop neural control, memory and learning together with proactive (anticipatory) decision making for our biomechanical walking
machines AMOS. This will lead to the generation of complex biologically-inspired behaviors like natural movements and effective locomotion over difficult terrains, versatile proactive
behaviors, versatile memory-guided behaviors, and goaldirected behaviors. All these complex behaviors have to cooperate or compete under the concept of modular neural mechanisms. Specifically this approach will combine five important neural aspects in the autonomous walking
machines: 1) muscle model, 2) adaptive forward models (efferent copy), 3) short-term memory, 4) multi-synaptic plasticity (long-term memory), and 5) predictive motor models (action planning). It will, as a result, provide a better understanding of the general control, memory, plasticity, and predictive principles in embodied neural sensori-motor function.

Two PhD positions:

With in this framework, one PhD student will mainly work on (Topic 1) neural motor control (i.e., antagonistic-muscle drive mechanisms and adaptive neural forward models) for natural
movements and effective locomotion over difficult terrains of the walking machines. He/she will be also required to investigate on mutual entrainment among the coupling of neural mechanisms and biomechanics.

Another PhD student will focus on (Topic 2) neural memory and learning (i.e., neural short-term
memory, STM and multiple plastic synapse mechanisms) for generating versatile proactive and
memory guided behaviors including goal-directed navigation of the walking machines.

To get a better idea of related research, please have a look at the following publications or visit www.manoonpong.com:

The positions are funded by German Research Foundation (DFG). Students will be encouraged
to enter a PhD program and to finish their PhD thesis within 3-4 years. Salary is according to
German TV-L. There is travel funding in case of papers accepted at good conferences.

Requirements:

Applicants need to have a Master or Diploma degree in a field related to robotics, e.g., Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, or Computer Science. The ideal applicants should have a strong background in robotics, neural control, and learning (having worked with real robotic systems, artificial neural networks and machine learning), and good programming skills (e.g., C, C++, Assembly).

Deadline and starting date:

Applications will be considered continuously until the positions are filled. The expected starting date is the 1st of March 2011 (or as soon as possible after this).

USA: Josephine de Karman Fellowship

The Josephine de Karman Fellowship Trust was established in 1954 by the late Dr. Theodore von Karman, world renowned aeronautics expert and teacher and first director of the Guggenheim Aeronautical Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, in memory of his sister,
Josephine, who died in 1951. The purpose of this fellowship program is to recognize and assist students whose scholastic achievements reflect professor von Karman's high standards.

*2011-2012 FELLOWSHIP GUIDELINES AND QUALIFICATIONS: *

Applications are available at www.dekarman.org . If you wish to receive an application in the mail, submit your request via the website or send your request to P.O. Box 3389, San Dimas, CA 91773.

Complete applications, including official transcripts of applicant's graduate and undergraduate studies at institutions in the United States and Canada and two letters of recommendation, must be received by the fellowship committee IN ONE PACKAGE postmarked no later than midnight,
January 31, 2011. Late applications will not be considered.

Announcement of awards will be made approximately April 15, 2011

A minimum of ten (10) fellowships, $22,000 for graduate students and $14,000 for undergraduate students, will be awarded for the regular academic year (fall and spring semesters or the equivalent where the quarterly system prevails), paid through the fellowship office of the
university in which the recipient is enrolled for study in the United States. Study must be carried out only in the United States and all funds must be expended only within this country.

The fellowship is for one academic year and may not be renewed or postponed.

DeKarman fellowships are open to students in any discipline, including international students, who are currently enrolled in a university or college located within the United States. Only candidates for the PhD who will defend their dissertation by June 2012 and undergraduates
entering their senior year (will receive bachelors degree in June 2012) are eligible for consideration. Postdoctoral and masters degree students are not eligible for consideration. Special consideration will be given to applicants in the Humanities.

Potential applicants should note that the competition for DeKarman fellowships is extreme. For the 2010-2011 cycle, the committee reviewed 462 applications and awarded 10 fellowships. To be competitive, graduate applicants should have outstanding letters of recommendation, significant publications, and have completed several chapters of the dissertation at the time of application. Undergraduate applicants should have exceptional recommendations and grades plus a compelling record of original research or scholarship. Although the competition is open to students from any US university or college, the vast majority of awards go to students at top-tier schools.

Additional Information of Interest to Applicants:

1. Students who are not citizens of the United States may apply for a Josephine de Karman Fellowship if they are already enrolled in a university located in the United States and if they will be in the United States by the July preceding the fall semester of the academic year for which they have enrolled.

2. The fellowships will be paid directly through the fellowship office of the university in which the successful candidate is enrolled for study in the United States. One half will be paid in September and one half the following February. NO UNIVERSITY OVERHEAD MAY BE APPLIED TO THE FELLOWSHIP AWARD. UNIVERSITY FINANCIAL SUPPORT IS VIEWED AS SEPARATE FROM DE KARMAN FELLOWSHIP SUPPORT. THE FELLOWSHIP IS FOR MERIT, BASED ON A NATIONAL COMPETITION. THEREFORE, ONGOING UNIVERSITY SUPPORT COMMITMENTS ARE MAINTAINED WHILE A DE KARMAN FELLOWSHIP IS HELD.

3. The names, universities, and departments (and dissertation titles of PhD candidates) of Josephine de Karman Fellowship awardees may be published on the Dekarman.org website.

4. By the end of December following completion of their fellowship year, awardees are required to submit a one to two page report on their achievements as a result of having held a Josephine de Karman Fellowship. This will normally be in the form of a letter to the Josephine de Karman Fellowship Committee, P.O. Box 3389, San Dimas, CA 91773. Graduate student awardees are asked to include with this letter a current abstract of their dissertation.

Description of research theme:

We are witnessing the rapid growth of a new generation of participatory and collaborative network technologies that provide individuals with a platform for sophisticated online social interaction. Social networks today have hundreds of millions of users and are transforming our social and professional interactions and to some extent are shaping society itself. Gradually, society is discerning that this development not only brings strong benets to the social and economic fabric, but also introduces new risks related to privacy violations. At this stage, these issues are often perceived as isolated incidents that most organizations do not take
accountability for. Yet, the implications of social networking environments for individual users, communities, organizations and society at large will become much more evident and most likely more substantial if necessary precautions are not taken. Especially alarming is the massive responsibility that individuals incur with respect to managing privacy and security risks arising from the information collected and shared about their everyday life on social networking sites. This phenomenon is has been coined as the responsibilisation of individuals.

The main objective of the overall research project is to mitigate the responsibilisation of individuals who use or are affected by social networking services by making the underlying social networking infrastructures and the organizations that run them more accountable. In
order to achieve this objective rst an understanding of the target audience is required as well as forms of responsibilisation. This target audience includes users, communities and organizations in Flanders (Belgium). The plan is to develop solutions that facilitate better decision making with respect to the target groups’ privacy and security concerns, and that
mitigate the risks, threats and concerns that currently are manifest in this domain.

The PhD research position at IBBT-SMIT (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) is part of this larger four-year interdisciplinary research project on security and privacy in online social networks, involving different Belgian universities and one American university. More in particular the doctoral research has a twofold perspective. On the one hand it wants to understand the practices and needs of users with regard to privacy issues within social network sites, mainly based on the use of qualitative and ethnographic methods. On the other hand it will focus on the critical design variables and tools for social software. For the latter a translation needs to be made from the user research findings to possible guidelines and requirements for future media
en technological solutions.

Requirements:

A Master degree in Social Sciences, (Communication Studies, Sociology, ...)
Good knowledge of Dutch (and English)
Strong affinity and/or interest in the domain of audience and user studies, social media technologies and media sociology
Good knowledge of user research methods

CfA: Feminist Critical Analysis, Dubrovnik, May 30th to June 3rd, 2011

Feminist Critical Analysis
Inter-University Center (IUC), Dubrovnik
May 30th to June 3rd, 2011

The Center for Gender and Politics of the Belgrade University (Political Science Department), Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers of the State University of New Jersey, and the Department of Gender Studies of the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest are pleased to announce the next annual postgraduate course in “Feminist Critical Analysis: Witnessing the Past, Remembering the Future”. The course will be held at the Inter-University Centre, Dubrovnik (www.iuc.hr) from May 30 to June 3 2011.

The course is co-directed by Dasa Duhacek, Center for Gender and Politics, University of Belgrade, Ethel Brooks, Women’s and Gender Studies Department, Rutgers University and Allaine Cerwonka, Gender Studies Department, Central European University (CEU).

The course is built on the intellectual dialogue among a diverse body of scholars from different geographical locations and the participating faculty is drawn from different universities.

TOPIC
After more than a decade of our Feminist Critical Analysis courses, organized on a wide range of major themes, that resonated not only regionally, but also with a broader international academic community, in the year 2011 the course Feminist Critical Analysis: Witnessing the Past, Remembering the Future will address a number of issues that will both take us into the past - while critically assessing it - but will also allow us to look toward the future.

By addressing time, highlighting women’s time, and exploring the myriad, seductive and sobering ways that temporality plays out we will follow complex paths of discussion: we will continue to insert our concerns into the current debates of memory and witness studies; and, in the process, we hope to add yet more elements to the diverse and growing ‘feminist memoir projects.’

Memory has on the one hand been a part of the philosophical inquiry since its beginnings, but, on the other hand it has forcefully been placed on the agenda of contemporary theory by the unbearable weight of trauma, urgency of testimony and the necessity of witnessing – all brought about by the unimaginable horrors of genocides, feminocides, slavery... Since it is a truism that the history of memory has been male, despite the female figure of Mnemosyne (and Clio), attention will also be given to Lemosyne and the history of forgetting. The history of memory has introduced countless forms, figures and tropes: from a wax tablet to a blank paper, from an inscriptional mode to its designations through spatial metaphors, from loci memoriae to sites of commemoration. Memory has been a pathway to the inner self but has especially in the histories of the present introduced the complexities of collective memories; it has alerted us to “estranged conceptual prisms…” that painfully point to our failures “to contain and account for what has happened in contemporary history.”

Contemporary theory has through feminist theoretical contributions and other entry points, such as the issues of the body, space, and many others, highlighted the irreplaceability of the gender perspective; and, has, within this framework, appended memories of the past to the understanding of the future.

11 PhD positions in NanoTOES Project

NanoTOES – an Initial Training Network under the PEOPLE Programme of the 7th Framework Programme – is offering a total of 11 PhD positions and 2 postdoctoral positions.

The members of the NanoTOES consortium are 12 partner organizations, including universities, non-university research institutions and industry, which will perform a joint study on the impact of Nanomaterials on Health and Environment. The scientific objectives of NanoTOES are to a)Identify mechanisms by which nanomaterials induce cellular stress and immune activation; b)Correlate size, shape, composition, coating of nanomaterials with defined cellular responses; c)Distinguish cell-specific from general cellular responses for cells from selected tissues; d) Identify the relevance of bystander substances and contaminants for nanotoxicity; e) Analyse the influence of biological compounds and entities on engineered nanomaterials; f) Develop and modify laboratory methods to allow their application in the work-place and in the environment.

Positions are expected to be filled with a starting date of 1st May 2011. Early stage researchers should have at the time of recruitment less than 4 years of experience and not hold a doctoral degree. These positions will offer full-time employment for 36 months and are to be combined with enrolment into an university programme with can lead to a PhD. Experienced researchers should have at the time of recruitment less than 5 years of experience, should hold a doctoral degree, and will be full-time employed for 24 months. Both types of positions offer cutting-edge research in leading laboratories dedicated to investigating the safety and impact of nanomaterials for health and environment. Inquiries can be made to the responsible supervisors as indicated below.

Salaries and terms of employment will be in accordance with the rules of the European Commission (http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/careers_en.htm). According to these rules, applicants must be nationals of a country other than that of the host organization where they will carry out the project. At the time of selection, the researcher may not have resided or carried out his/her main activity in the country of the host for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her appointment. Short stays such as holidays are not taken into
account.

Applications will be evaluated according to the following criteria: Successful completion of a relevant study at Master or comparable level, quality of performance in previous studies, commitment to excellence in research, expected benefits from participation in this project.

Applicants should send directly to the responsible supervisor: CV, list of publications (if any), copy of academic degrees received, contact information for two referees and a one-page statement of the applicants expected contribution to and benefit from participation in NanoTOES.
