PhD Scholarships in Chemical Engineering - University of Queen

PhD scholarships

For scientists and engineers in Chemical Engineering

University of Queensland

School of Chemical Engineering

Industry sponsored PhD scholarships for scientists and engineers in Chemical Engineering

A stipend of between $25,000 and $32,500 pa AUD for three years (tax free) is available for 2 PhD students for projects concerning processing, colloidal/microstru ctural properties and rheology on the gelling and yielding properties of dairy proteins.

Many soft foods are highly complex yielding and gelling soft matter systems that are structured at the nano and micro-scale in the form of either a soft glass or gel. The colloidal nature of this structure strongly influences their physical and sensory properties, including rheology, but the exact relationship between these properties remains elusive. This lack of fundamental insight, combined with the inability to precisely control the structure and rheology during processing, is actually inhibiting food manufacturer' s efforts to create next generation foods that have substantial health benefits whilst delivering a positive consumer experience. We focus on discovering the processing-structur e-rheology relationships relevant to dairy proteins.

Project 1 aims to develop and validate rheological- based approaches and scaling rules to elucidate the influence of processing conditions on the rheology and microstructure of gelling proteins during processing. Depending on the candidate's capabilities and interests, this may also involve utilization of advanced modeling approaches.

Project 2 aims to determine novel relationships between rheological properties of protein gels with their colloidal properties as well as the nature of their self-assembled nano/microstructure s. It is anticipated that such properties will strongly influence the quality of the final product including their behavior during oral processing as well as their sensorial properties.

The projects will be performed in collaboration with an overseas industry partner.

The role: These projects require excellent engineers or scientists with an interest in performing and applying fundamental engineering and/or scientific approaches in order to obtain an advanced, and as yet unrealized, understanding of industrial processes and products. While
the key application area is towards dairy proteins, the skills and capabilities to be developed by the candidates in the fields of soft matter and rheology will be advantageous for a wide variety of industrial and academic areas. The candidates will be part of a multidisciplinary dynamic research group.

The person: Graduates with honors or masters from Chemical Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Food Engineering, Food science, Chemistry, and Physics with good experimental skills are encouraged to apply. Academically strong practicing engineers and scientists are also encouraged to apply.

Remuneration: Scholarships are available for outstanding PhD candidates. This will enable an excellent student to receive a full-time living allowance of $25,000 - $32,500 per annum for three years, with the possibility of a six month extension in approved circumstances.
International student fees can be waived for excellent international student under certain circumstances.

Other benefits include potential for a 3 month placement with the industrial sponsor, attendance to at least one local and one international scientific conference and participation in a range of UQ leadership and development courses.

Contact: To discuss the role, contact A/Prof Jason Stokes, telephone (07) 3365 4361 or emailjason.stokes@ uq.edu.au . Web address: http://www.uq.edu.au/uqresearchers/researcher/stokesjr.html .

Applications should contain:

1. covering letter

2. up-to-date CV, and

3. academic transcript.

About the Social Theory Forum
Department of Sociology
University of Massachusetts Boston

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Histories of sociology describe how the discipline formed through nineteenth century struggles to understand the combined upheavals of socio-political revolutions and global expansion of the industrial revolution. These events radically altered established orders and posed questions that remain with us today: class, race, gender, and processes of social change, among others. The twentieth century brought even more tumultuous change, bringing with it great implications for social theory.

The Social Theory Forum (STF) is an annual international conference organized jointly by the sociology and other departments, interested faculty and students at University of Massachusetts Boston, in order to creatively explore, develop, promote, and publish cross-disciplinary social theory in an applied and critical framework. STF offers faculty and students of UMass Boston and other national and international colleges and universities an interactive medium to discuss various aspects of the way in which particular theoretical traditions can be relevant to present everyday issues, as well as to the current state and the future of social theory.

STF's goals are:

To critically engage with and evaluate classical and contemporary social theories in a cross-disciplinary and comparative cross-cultural framework in order to develop new integrative theoretical structures and practices;

To foster individual and collective self-reflexivity in exploring social theories in global and world-historical contexts to aid people effectively address social problems;

To foster an interactive and dialogical learning experience and research in theory within and across faculty, students, and community divides on and off campus; and

To foster exchange of ideas open to constructive and integrative exploration of diverse and conflicting viewpoints, modes of thinking, and world-views.

Postgraduates for Data Mining

Project A1 Data Mining for Ubiquitous System Software: Finding usage patterns in system log data of ubiquitous systems will be tackled in two ways. First, data are aggregated by streaming algorithms at the ubiquitous system, finding patterns or motifs that are well suited for further learning. Second, the log data are analysed by graphical models (e.g., CRF, SVMstruct), regarding special kernel functions. These algorithms are parallelized for CUDA implementation. Finally, distributed clustering algorithms are investigated in order to find groups of usage patterns.

Project A2 Algorithmic Aspects of Learning Methods in Embedded Systems: Algorithmic foundations of learning methods in resource-constraine d systems are investigated with respect to memory models. In particular, clustering algorithms, graph algorithms, distributed algorithms, and data streaming algorithms are investigated with respect to energy consumption. Developing the theoretical basis for resource-aware learning is the focus of A2.
Contact: Christian.sohler@ tu-dortmund. de; jan.vahrenhold@ tu-dortmund. de

Project A3 Methods for the Efficient Resource Utilization in Machine Learning Algorithms: R programs are analyzed w.r.t. their resource consumption and a well-tailored compilation strategy will be developed. For diverse statistical learning algorithms the trade-off between quality of the learned model and recourse consumption will be determined. In particular, problems of model selection, feature selection will be investigated.
Contact: joerg.rahnenfuehrer @tu-dortmund. de

Project TB1 Resource-efficient and Distributed Platforms for Integrative Data Analysis: The analysis of spectroscopy data from a breath sensor for the timely disease diagnosis requires an online method for feature extraction, alignment methods, and prediction of spectra. High-throughput data analysis, bioinformatics, and online algorithms are the fields that contribute to developing smart wear including a breath sensor.
Contact: sven.rahmann@ tu-dortmund. de

Project B2 Resource-optimizing time analysis of artifactious image sequences for the detection of nano objects: Plasmon assisted microscopy of nano objects (PAMONO) is a new sensor measuring extremely little objects. The PAMONO images are to be analysed in order to detect and classify viruses. The images are suffering from noise. Cleaning the data, comparing image analysis algorithms regarding their recognition capabilities and their respective resource consumptions are the tasks of data mining in this project.
Contact: heinrich.mueller@ tu-dortmund. de
Alexander.zybin@ isas.de

Project C1 Feature Selection in High Dimensional Data for Risk Prognosis in Oncology: Ensemble methods are to be investigated, in how much they increase the stability of feature selection in high dimensional data where much less examples are given than features. Sets of exons (several exons make up for a gene) are to be clustered w.r.t. the oncology prognosis. Transfer learning will be evaluated concerning example sets stemming from different methods and collections of patients. Co-training will combine and fuse divers studies on exons or genes for neuroblastoma patients.
Contact: katharina.morik@ tu-dortmund. de

Project C2 Multi-level statistical analysis of high-frequency spatio-temporal process data: High-frequency high-dimensional process data are typically analyzed in several steps. Interesting data need to be identified and selected in real time for further analysis because of limited storage capacities. By means of the challenging example of detection and classification of astrophysical particles appearing as transient patterns in spatio-temporal data, we want to construct robust generalizable techniques for reduction, classification and modeling of such data, as well as strategies for the suitable combination of these analysis steps.
Contact: roland.fried@ tu-dortmund. de; wolfgang.rhode@ tu-dortmund. de

Project C3 Regression approaches for large-scale high-dimensional data: The scalability of modern regression approaches is often stretched to its limits by a large number of observations and/or variables. This aggravates their use in embedded systems. The goal of this project is therefore the development of highly efficient regression methods. Algorithms are to be developed that reduce the number of observations using, e.g., random linear projections and sampling (streaming algorithms), or the dimensionality of the underlying, possibly Bayesian, model classes imposing structural constraints, e.g., monotonicity.

Postgraduates for Embedded Systems

Project A1 Data Mining for Ubiquitous System Software: Instrumenting the operating system of ubiquitous systems for data gathering is difficult, since logging the data must not disturb the regular use of the system. The instrumentation must be platform independent. New methods based on Dynamic Aspect C++ are to be developed and optimized regarding resource consumption. Applying learned models to the operating systems requires a generic framework so that efficiency is actually enhance by them.
Contact: olaf.spinczyk@ tu-dortmund. de

Project A3 Methods for the Efficient Resource Utilization in Machine Learning Algorithms: This project builds a bridge between learning algorithms in terms of R programs and resource efficiency. Based on an internal representation of R, optimizations of the compiler are to be developed that take into account memory allocations. The optimized internal representation is then transformed until a stanrad compiler and C++ libraries produce resource-efficient code.
Contact: peter.marwedel@ tu-dortmund. de

Project A4 Resource Efficient and Distributed Platforms for Integrative Aata Analysis: This project explores technical and conceptual foundations for distributed execution platforms that are self-descriptive regarding their provision and consumption of resources. In particular, the description of resources like memory, power consumption, bandwidth, or runtime constraints is of special interest. Due to the platform's ability to describe itself, applications have a valid basis for resource-aware decisions and hence are enabled to optimize their resource requests. The major challenge of this approach is to deal with the vast complexity of embedded platforms and dynamic interactions between the resource types envisaged.
Contact: peter.marwedel@ tu-dortmund. de; christian.wietfeld@ tu-dortmund. de

Project B2 Resource-optimizing Time Analysis of Artifactious Image Sequences for the Detection of Nano Objects: The platform from project A4 is enhanced. Here, FPGA approaches and implementations for GPGPU are developed. In order to gain independence from various multiprocessor architectures, a high-level synthesis and multi-objective optimization of hardware-software partitionings are to be investigated.
Contact: peter.marwedel@ tu-dortmund. de

Project B4 Analysis and Communication for Dynamic Traffic Prognosis: This project researches innovative, high precision and real time prognosis algorithms to predict object stream behaviour. The quality of the prognosis depends on the quantity, quality and reliability plus synchronicity of the available information on representative objects in the stream. In consideration of the avaiability of the multitude of sensor data sources as well as resource starved embedded systems, this sub-project also explores novel data aggregation, fusion and communication methods with respect to the requirements set by the prognosis, and evaluates the expected benefits.

Postgraduates for Information Engineering

Project A5 Exchange and Fusion of Information under Availability and Confidentiality Requirements in Multi-Agent Systems: Achieving both availability and confidentiality of information implies the development and employment of concepts and algorithms that handle conflicting security issues of actors and persons. This should be possible even in situations with limited technical infrastructure in terms of time, space, and communication. This project aims at extending data base techniques to multi-agent systems oriented towards the approach of J.Y. Halpern and K.R. O?Neill (2005, 2008), in particular for the purpose of data mining in embedded systems.

Project description:
Comparing rating and ranking procedures for the measurement of values in surveys The study of values lies at the heart of the social sciences. Nonetheless, empirical social researchers have been involved in a long-standing discussion about the proper measurement of human value orientations, which revolves around the use of rating or ranking procedures. This project examines the appropriateness of both approaches in much-needed and novel ways, by: 1) directly considering the effects of response bias, 2) gathering and analysing data based on within-subjects survey experiments, which are from a Dutch nationally representative sample, and 3) making use of recent developments in statistical modelling of response styles and of rating and ranking data. PhD scholarships (up to 3 available) - UNSW Climate Change Research Centre

$35,000 per year, tax-free

Applications are invited for up to three high-level PhD scholarships to work on a long-term project investigating future risks associated with surface ocean warming: including impacts on climate, rainfall, carbon uptake, sea level, and ocean circulation. This includes impacts on the ocean’s thermohaline circulation, the large-scale lateral ocean circulation, and circulation associated with ocean-atmosphere modes such as the El Niño / Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This research project is supported by Professor Matthew England’s recently awarded ARC Laureate Fellowship. The project aims to quantify some of the most significant risks associated with ocean surface warming. This includes, in particular, the impacts of surface warming on climate modes such as ENSO and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), regional rainfall change, ocean carbon uptake, sea level rise and future ocean circulation.

This will include evaluating dynamical processes and coupled ocean-atmosphere feedback mechanisms in observations and within global climate models. Another area of interest is the impact of ocean warming on properties within the surface mixed layer and, in turn, the physics and vigor of the ocean’s thermohaline circulation.

The PhD scholarships are tenable for a period of up to 4 years, with the successful candidates able to shape a project to match their background, interests and expertise. Applicants should have a strong academic track record including an upper-level Honours Class I or equivalent. Honours graduates with a strong academic track record in physics and/or mathematics are particularly encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants who obtain an APA in either the current or future rounds may be awarded a top-up award to bring their total scholarship value to $35,000 per annum, with additional funds then available for project and travel support.
