PhD student position in air quality modeling in Switzerland

The Paul Scherrer Institut is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the world's leading user laboratories. With its 1200 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and material sciences, elementary particle and astrophysics, energy and environmental research as well as on biology and medicine.

The Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry (LAC) is engaged in air quality and climate research by field studies, smog chamber experiments and chemical transport models.

We are offering a*** PhD Student* position in the field of*** Air quality modeling*
The chemical composition of particulate matter was recently measured and analyzed in several field campaigns at different locations in unprecedented detail. This provides a unique opportunity to evaluate 3-dimensional photochemical models including emissions, meteorological transport, gasphase and aerosol chemistry. The challenges are on the one hand to get the boundary layer meteorological processes right on the other hand to get the emissions right. Recent research has shown that one also needs to revisit the assumptions concerning the formation processes leading to secondary organic aerosols.

The project will focus on aerosol formation processes in Switzerland and Europe. An intensive collaboration is planned with another PhD student focusing on meteorology and with a Canadian research group. A competitive Salary will be available.

*Your tasks***

- Use the meteorological models MM5 and/or the Alpine Model (aLMo) in combination with the chemical transport model CAMx in various configurations

- Improve the gaseous emissions, e.g. concerning biogenic sesqui-terpene emissions
- Improve the primary aerosol emissions (especially from domestic wood burning)
- Use and/or develop new schemes to represent the secondary organic aerosol formation in an appropriate manner (2)
- Test and evaluate the model versus various available and new data sets
- Present the results at workshops, conferences and in peer-reviewed journals

*Your profile***

You have a master/diploma degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, chemistry or environmental science. Ideally, you already have some experience in meteorological or air quality modeling. Programming and computer skills are crucial. Good communication skills in English are required and in German beneficial.

*We are looking forward to your application*

Vacant PhD Position at the University of Bonn

Research field:
Numerical modeling of atmospheric chemical processes

Position:
A PhD position is available at the Meteorological Institute of the University of Bonn.

Together with another Postdoc student, the applicant will work within a common research project of the Meteorological Institutes of the Universities of Bonn and Mainz and the Max-Planck-Institut e for Chemistry in Mainz.

Contract:
The research is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It is limited to a three year period with a salary TVL 13/2.

Proposed research of the project:
Numerical modeling of chemical processes in the atmosphere is essential to increase our understanding of atmospheric composition and its changes induced by human activity. In recent years, global-scale atmospheric models have been developed that calculate the concentration and processing of atmospheric trace constituents. However, for key problems, e.g. local air quality and long-range transport from local
sources, the development of high-resolution models is essential.

In this project such a model will be developed. The model will be driven by consistent meteorological and chemical fields. This will be achieved through an online coupling of the global ECHAM5/MESSy system with the COSMO-model of the German Meteorological Service. First applications of the newly developed model COSMO-MESSy will serve to investigate its capabilities for a detailed analysis of field measurements, the direct simulation of mesoscale chemical perturbations like dust
and biomass burning plumes, as well as an assessment and forecast of local air quality.

Qualifications:
Diploma/Master in meteorology, physics, informatics, mathematics or related fields.
Experience with numerical modeling of atmospheric processes.
Skills in Linux, FORTRAN, IDL or others.

USA: Loeb Fellowship

Overview

The Fellowship is a unique opportunity to nurture the leadership potential of the most promising men and women in design and other professions related to the built and natural environment. It enhances the excellence of the GSD by exposing students to some of the most exciting midcareer professionals in their fields. John Loeb realized this potential when he endowed the Loeb Fellowship to fill a special place in American education: one that would greatly increase the practical effectiveness of the design professions. Now entering its fourth decade, with over 300 alumni, the Fellowship has made substantial progress toward that goal.

The Loeb Fellowship was established in 1970 through the generosity of the late John L. Loeb, Harvard College '24. Based at the Graduate School of Design, the program offers ten annual postprofessional awards for independent study at Harvard. Through the Fellowship, participants have access to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Design, the Graduate School of Education, Harvard Business School, Harvard College, Harvard Divinity School, Harvard Law School, the Kennedy School of Government, and M.I.T.

Who Should Apply

Loeb Fellows are accomplished, mid-career professionals who have been engaged in their field for a minimum of five years, have compiled a record of exemplary work, and have been identified as leaders by their peers. Most applicants have expertise in the disciplines in which the Design School grants degrees - architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and urban design. Others come from related fields such as journalism, fine arts, nonprofit administration, and public service. Good candidates typically share a passion for improving the quality of the built and natural environment, and a commitment to improving their own skills in pursuit of
that goal. Ideal applicants demonstrate a proven ability to create their own
program of work or study and carry it through to completion.

Since the central focus and goal of the Fellowship is to improve the environment of cities and natural areas in the United States, most applicants are from this country. However, it is clear that the program's goal cannot be accomplished without reference to work being done in other parts of the world. Therefore, the Fellowship welcomes applications from qualified international practitioners. Diversity is a very important consideration for the Fellowship on many levels. Applications are encouraged from men and women, people of color, and those with both typical and
atypical career paths.

The Fellowship is intended to serve practitioners, not to be an academic sabbatical. Applications from full-time academics are not encouraged. However, candidates whose work is divided between teaching and practice, and for whom this program will reinforce their work as practitioners, are welcome to apply.

Nomination Information

Nomination is not a requirement for application, however many excellent candidates learn about the Fellowship opportunity through the nomination process.

Please use this nomination form to introduce promising candidates to the Fellowship.

Either email the form directly to the Fellowship or download the form, fill it out and fax or mail to the Fellowship office.

Once the Fellowship office receives the completed nomination form, application materials will be forwarded to the prospective candidate. The nomination process is anonymous. The Fellowship does not indicate the name of the nominator in the letter sent to the prospective applicant, however nominators are encouraged to contact the nominee and talk with them about the fellowship opportunity.

Application Information

Application forms, letters of recommendation, and supplemental materials are due January 3, 2008 for a Fellowship beginning in September 2008. Instructions for how to complete the application are included on the application form. If you have any questions call Sally Young at 617.495.9345.

Only 55 places are available.

Candidates are accepted only if their applications have been approved by a Scholarship Partner.

The scholarship covers 75 per cent of tuition fees. For example, 15 hours of study per week would normally cost ~120.00 but, in the scholarship programme, it would only cost ~30 per week, a reduction of ~90.00. However, the scholarship does not cover accommodation, travel, travel insurance etc., and applicants must be able to demonstrate that they can pay for such extra costs. Students can arrange their own accommodation or can use our service for example Host Family (Home stay) Half Board ~ 25 Person per night for breakfast and evening meal or Host Family (Home Stay) Full Board ~ 27 Person per night for breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal. Tellus may be able to support applicants with financial hardship by assisting them to find part-time work.

The successful candidates are to study a course from the minimum of three weeks up to the maximum of three months.

The application process is simple. First, students fill in the registration form, but the key criterion is the supporting statement, in which they must detail in 250-300 words why an improvement in their English skills would improve the lives of others. Then, they must submit this to the participating partner who will ensure the application is complete and that the applicant meets the minimum standard of language level. Next, the partner will forward us the application for our approval and selection. Finally, the partner will be informed within seven days of receipt if the applicant has been successful who will in turn advise the applicant.

Scholarships MSc & PhD in Hydroinformatics

HYDROINFORMATICS: MODELLING AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR INTEGRATED WATER MANAGEMENT

Hydroinformatics uses simulation modeling and information and communication technology to help in solving problems of hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering for better management of water-based systems. It provides the computer-based decision-support systems that now enter increasingly into the offices of engineers, water authorities and government agencies. The Hydroinformatics course aims at enriching traditional engineering practice by introducing innovative approaches in order to open up for the participants much broader prospective.

The participants will learn subject groups comprising of:

1. Fundamentals, hydraulic and environmental processes
2. Information systems, GIS, communication and internet
3. Physically-based simulation modeling
4. Data-driven modeling and computational intelligence
5. System analysis, decision support and optimization
6. Applications : Coastal and estuarial systems modeling and Urban water system modeling
7. Integration subjects
8. Advanced topics

The programme is not a standard engineering programme. We often characterize it as a programme with difference. The difference arises in the extensive application of modeling, information technology and decision support tools for water management, in a challenging training programme with professors and top experts from leading
universities and consultancies of various countries, that opens a range of future career opportunities. The founder of Hydroinformatics (Emeritus Prof. M. Abbot) does lecture at UNESCO-IHE. Participants often mention that "the course opened up new horizon in my professional life".

Most of the Hydroinformatics participants are financed through Netherlands Fellowship Programme. For this year, the programme is run directly to M.Sc undertaken for 1.5 years and the NFP will cover tuition fee and living cost.

The flier for the Hydroinformatics specialisation is at:
http://www.unesco- ihe.org/hi/ hi_flier. pdf

We would also encourage people to apply for fellowships from other funding agencies, especially the World Bank - see

ASIA Fellows Awards

Funding and Administration

The Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Its office in Bangkok administers the ASIA Fellows Awards in the region with assistance from partner offices in Beijing, New Delhi, Manila, Hanoi, and Jakarta.

The ASF Board Management Committee is composed of twelve educational and public leaders from the People's Republic of China, South and Southeast Asia, and Australia. The Board Management Committee selects the fellows, oversees the program and makes policy decisions.

Goals and Objectives

The principal goal of the ASIA Fellows Awards is to increase the overall awareness of intellectual resources in the countries of Northeast, South and Southeast Asia and to contribute to the growth of long-range capabilities for cross-regional knowledge sharing. The ASIA Fellows Awards seek to develop regional expertise, establish a multilateral network of Asian specialists from many disciplines,
professional fields and countries, stimulate interdisciplinary research and inter-societal comparison, and contribute to new developments within existing area studies communities. The awards offer opportunities for outstanding young and mid-career Asian scholars, and professionals to gain knowledge of the countries in the region and an understanding of the contexts that shape global and regional issues through research. They enable the awardees to conduct research in a participating Asian country for six to nine months.

Eligibility

Citizens of and residents in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Republic of Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Master's/Doctoral degree or equivalent professional training and experiences (minimum of 3 years of university teaching experiences for scholars or 5 years of work experience for professionals. )

Applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the time of the application deadline. However, those up to 50 years old proposing to do research in the field of Humanities may be given special consideration.

Proficiency in English or in the language of the host country appropriate to the proposed research project.

Those who are currently enrolled in a degree program, or have just completed a degree program for less than one to two years will not be eligible to apply. Those who were a recipient of a Ford Foundation fellowship grant within the last two years prior to the application is also ineligible.

conditions of the awards

The proposed research projects for the ASIA Fellows Awards can be carried out in only one participating country (except the applicant's own) and under the following conditions:

No applicant can propose to conduct their research in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.

Applicants from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore cannot undertake research in each other's countries.

Applicants from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan can only apply to conduct their research in Thailand, the host country of ASF.

Any part of the proposed project that will be done in the applicant's own country will not be funded under the ASIA Fellows Awards.

The proposed grant period must be between 6-9 months. Once awarded, a fellow is required to conduct research at the proposed host country throughout the grant period. Splitting of the grant period or conducting research in the applicant's own country during the proposed grant period is not allowed under any circumstances.

While an applicant from South or Southeast Asia may propose a research project in a country within his/her own region, preference is given to applicants who propose to conduct research in a region of Asia other than their own (e.g., an award to an Indian scholar or professional for research in China).

Applicants should not plan to conduct their research in a country with which their home country has a difficult diplomatic relationship because of the uncertainties of securing an affiliation and obtaining a research clearance and visa for a long-term stay.

Fellowship awards are not for the purpose of completing requirements towards an academic degree (master's thesis or doctoral
dissertations) .

Fellowship Activities

ASIA Fellows awardees are placed at top-ranking research universities and non-academic institutions such as museums, archives or think tanks. Fellows should identify preferred placements in host countries. They may engage in an organized field research in the host country. Fellows are strongly encouraged to undertake some language training in their host country as part of facilitating their research. They are also provided the opportunities to present guest lectures, or to conduct seminars and workshops at the invitation of the host institutions. After completion of their fellowship, fellows can apply for post-fellowship awards of three months to further their research in a country within Asia, or for short-term travel awards to make presentations at overseas conferences and meetings. All fellows are required to attend the Orientation Program in July 2008, and the ASIA Fellows' Annual Conference in July 2010 at which they present their research results to fellow awardees and to scholars from the country in which the conference is held. They are also required to start the award by the end of December 2008. At the end of the fellowship, fellows must submit to the ASF office in Bangkok evidence of the results of their research project in the form of publications, photos of artistic works, audio/ video productions, etc.

CfP: SSRC Eurasia Program's Dissertation Development Workshop, NY, USA

Hello,

I am contacting you on behalf of the Eurasia Program of the Social Science Research Council to ask that you publicly distribute the following information (text below and PDF flyer attached) about our upcoming Dissertation Development Workshop. This workshop, "Times of Trouble: Violence in Eurasia, from Past to Present," will be held April 4-6, 2008 in New York City and is open to graduate students at any stage of the dissertation process whose projects examine Eurasia and the workshop themes. (Please note: only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply).

Please let me know if you require any additional information, and thank you for your assistance.

Best,
Holly Danzeisen
Eurasia Program

Times of Trouble: Violence in Eurasia from Past to Present New York City April 4-6, 2008

Application Submission Deadline: December 17, 2007

The Eurasia Program of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) invites proposals for a dissertation development workshop focusing on issues of violence in Eurasia. Graduate students at any stage of their dissertation process (from proposal to write-up) and from any disciplinary or interdisciplinary program in the humanities or social sciences are eligible to apply. We particularly encourage applicants who propose fresh theoretical perspectives and methodologies, and whose work speaks to a
wide scholarly audience.

Tsarist-era pogroms, the brutalities of the Stalinist period, the fame of the Russian mafia, contemporary human rights abuses in Central Asia, and ongoing conflicts across the Caucasus suggest only some of the best known concerns of the past 100 years. What kind of norms or values have governed the use of violence in the territory once covered by the Russian empire and the Soviet Union, now by the Russian Federation and other successor states? To what extent have scholars focused appropriately, or at times excessively, on these most sensational aspects of former Soviet space? What have been the responses from individuals, groups, and states from
within and outside the region to violence and repression, or to ongoing scholarly
and popular renderings of themselves as violent? Does the region deserve such reputation relative to other world areas?

These and related questions will shape the discussions of the Eurasia Program dissertation development workshop, with participants invited from, but not limited to the fields of anthropology, archaeology, economics, environmental studies, film and media studies, history, law, literature, politics, psychology, and sociology.

For detailed information on application procedures and eligibility requirements, please visit the Eurasia Program online at www.ssrc.org/ programs/ eurasia or contact program staff at eurasia@ssrc. org.

CfP: ECPR Workshop: Environmental Capacity Development in Transition

Call for Participation

Environmental Capacity Development in Transition States and Emerging Democracies

Rennes, France
11-16 April 2008

We invite scholars who are conducting research on environmental capacity building, assistance, and intervention in transition states and emerging democracies to participate in a workshop at the Joint Sessions of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).

The workshop will be oriented around the individual interests of participants. In general, however, we expect to: (1) assess embedded assumptions, rationales and discourses related to policy transfer and institutional assistance; (2) examine how the transnational movement of resources, ideas, and norms not only are shaping domestic environmental capacity, but the extent to which they are resulting in equitable policies and policy outcomes; and (3) explore how alternatives to traditional approaches to environmental governance, such as the activities of domestic and transnational NGOs and emergence of certification schemes, are affecting
the environmental capacity as well as the power of states.

This workshop offers an opportunity for political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, planners, and policy scholars conducting research on topics such as environmental policy development, environmental movements, policy networks, transnational assistance, and the politics of sustainable development to exchange views and ideas. We are particularly keen to attract scholars working on environmental policy and development in Asia, the global South, and the former Soviet states as well as those examining capacity-related issues in the context of water scarcity, climate change, and OTHER.

This workshop is convened by Adam Fagan (Queen Mary, University of London, a.fagan@qmul. ac.uk) and JoAnn Carmin (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, jcarmin@mit. edu). If you are interested in participating, send a one to two paragraph summary of the topic you would like to discuss to the conveners by 1 December.

Additional information on the Joint Sessions is available at:

PhD Studentship in Wetlands Contructions to Treat Domestic Wastewater

PhD Studentship Integrated Constructed Wetlands to Treat Domestic Wastewater

*Institute for Infrastructure and Environment in collaboration with Monaghan County Council (Ireland) and the Integrated Constructed Wetland Initiative*

A full PhD scholarship is available for a very good candidate (UK, EU or Overseas) with a background in civil and environmental engineering, environmental science, applied microbiology, ecology or equivalent, interested in carrying out experimental research of physical, biological and chemical processes occurring in wetlands treating domestic wastewater, and undertaking subsequently corresponding statistical data analysis and computer modelling studies. Work experience in academia, relevant industries and/or local authorities would be beneficial.

*Research Project Outline*
Integrated constructed wetlands (ICW) have been designed successfully to treat farmyard runoff following best management practice. They are popular because of their low capital and operational costs, high treatment efficiency, optimal integration into the landscape, and ecosystem and biodiversity enhancement benefits, and excellent compliance with socio-economic and sustainable needs. However, the application of ICW as the main treatment unit for large-scale domestic wastewater treatment plants is novel, and concerns need to be addressed that these ICW do not pollute groundwater and receiving watercourses.

Treatment wetland systems are currently designed based on past empirical observations. There is a clear need for a decision support tool for the design and operation of ICW treating domestic wastewater incorporating standard engineering and microbiological variables. This can be achieved by incorporating microbiological parameter into novel engineering decision support methodologies.

A comprehensive statistical data analysis will be performed before predictive modelling. A neuro-fuzzy modelling approach is likely to be used to gain insight into the processes within ICW in space and time, and will be applied to assess the overall system performance.

*Study Location*
The candidate is expected to work predominantly at two locations: Monaghan County Council, Monaghan, Ireland; The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.

*Candidate and Supervision*
The successful candidate will have a 1st or 2.1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject and will ideally have a proven commitment to working in field and laboratory environments. The candidate will receive supervision and guidance from an experienced urban water and wetland research team. The lead academic supervisor will be Dr Miklas Scholz (The University of Edinburgh), and the external supervisor will be Dr Rory Harrington (Irish Department of the Environment Heritage and Local
Government). The student will also report to a representative from Monaghan County Council.

*Application Procedure*
Monaghan County Council will fund one full PhD scholarship covering student maintenance, project consumables and equipment, travel costs, and bench and postgraduate registration fees available to UK, EU and international students. *The exact amount (between € ¦£58 and € ¦£85k)* of the scholarship will be subject to the fee status and needs of the candidate.

The PhD studentship will be awarded for three years. No deadline for applications has been set. The search for a suitable candidate will continue as long as necessary. However, *it is anticipated that the official start date is likely to be around 1 March 2008, but an early start will be encouraged*.

Interested candidates are invited to submit a full application to the School of Engineering and Electronics at http://www.see. ed.ac.uk/ postgraduate/ apply/. The application should include the following documents: comprehensive cover letter, full application form, at least two references, English language certificates (if English is not the native language), project proposal (two pages including references; outline of the candidate's research input based on interests and skills).

Informal enquiries before submission of the full application are encouraged. Please contact Dr Miklas Scholz, Senior Lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering and Electronics, The University of Edinburgh, William Rankine Building, The King's Buildings, EH9 3JL, Scotland, United Kingdom; tel +44 (0)131 650 6780; fax +44 (0)131 650 6554; e-mail m.scholz@ed. ac.uk for additional information.

PhD in Optimal Use of Biomass in Power Plant Boilers

PhD Project - Optimal use of biomass in power plant boilers Combustion and Harmful Emission Control Research Centre Department of Chemical Engineering

A 3-year PhD position on the above mentioned topic is open at the CHEC (Combustion and Harmful Emission Control) Research Centre, Department of Chemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark.

*Supervisors: *Associate Professor Peter Arendt Jensen (paj@kt.dtu.dk), Associate Professor Flemming Frandsen (ff@kt.dtu.dk), Professor Kim Dam-Johansen (kdj@kt.dtu.dk).

*Background:
*Utilization of biomass on large power plants is a potentially efficient method to reduce net CO2 emissions and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Use of biomass fuels in large suspension-fired boilers may cause operational problems. One example is when straw is applied as fuel in suspension fired boilers whereby severe ash deposit formation in the boiler chamber often takes place. Improved technologies for ash deposit removal are therefore needed.

This PhD study will deal with the development of models, experimental tools and innovative concepts to reduce ash related problems in biomass fired power plant boilers. The study shall be founded on solid knowledge on Chemical Engineering and will be conducted in tight collaboration with industrial partners. In some recent CHEC-projects both modeling tools, advanced probes and laboratory equipment have been developed and those tools will be available for the PhD project.

*Project content:
*The main objective is to develop methods to optimize the use of straw in power plant boilers and to develop and verify a model of the transient deposit formation in a boiler. Practical probe measurements on a full scale boiler will form the basis for a mathematical model for deposit formation taking all important parameters into consideration. Based on the results strategies for efficient boiler operation is to be established. The project will be conducted in collaboration with the power company Vattenfall.

The PhD-candidate will carry out the model development and conduct the probe measurements together with technicians. Vattenfall will operate the boiler and participate in the planning of the project.

*Contents of PhD application:
