University of St Andrews Full-time PhD Studentship (grant rates) Patient Safety The Social Dimensions of Health Institute, the Universities of Dundee and St Andrews

We are seeking an enthusiastic person to undertake a PhD in patient safety and quality improvement in health care systems. The studentship is offered as a three-year full-time post funded by the Scottish Higher Education Council and registered with the University of St Andrews.

As part of the Scottish Patient Safety Research Network, www.spsrn.ac. uk the student will join a local friendly multi-professional team working on patient safety and quality improvement issues. He/she will be expected to develop their thesis in a way that will make a significant original contribution to what is a growing and exciting academic area. The PhD will focus on organisational and system causes of patient harm and efforts to address these to enhance patient safety (human factors, high reliability systems and practitioner- led change).

The successful candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in a social science (at 2:1 level or above) or equivalent professional qualification. The post-holder will be located within the Social Dimensions of Health Institute www.sdhi.ac. uk although some travel within Scotland may be necessary. Start date will be by agreement.
